By Katherine Grant NewsNow When members of the public packed the West Lincoln council chamber on Monday night, they were expecting a good debate on the proposed building of a new multipurpose recreational facility. Some were at the Public Works Committee meeting to support replacing Smithville’s aging arena, others to speak against it. But when Mayor Doug Joyner brought forward his six-part motion to get things moving forward after six years of discussion, he was met with total silence. Not a single member of the Public Works committee would second his motion and he was left “in shock.” “Never in my eight-plus years in politics

Last week, Niagara West Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak was unequivocal in his comments that Niagara Peninsula Energy was overzealous in cutting power to Ge’s greenhouse during the coldest February on record when his $360 bill was at only 48

days overdue. “Without a doubt this is a massive screw up with no common sense or good judgment or good business conduct used,” said Hudak. NPE’s vice-president customer service Margaret Battista maintains the company did nothing wrong and was simply following its procedures. Battista noted in an email Tuesday the process was followed and that as part of a first step, after a letter had been mailed out, “In this time span, another touch point is done with

a 48-hour Notice which in this case was hand delivered to the property, whereby a knock on the door was done first then sealed envelope with this notice was left in the mailbox. Again, no contact from the customer, then 48 hours later, on the next business day, a knock on the greenhouse and house is done, disconnection and the disconnection Card is left in the mailbox.” On the question of why mailbox delivery and not something more visible? “We follow the postal

practice that we leave notices sealed in an envelope in a mailbox not in front of a door that the correspondence can blow away, or be misplaced, or someone’s privacy invaded,” wrote Battista. just choose to be silent on. I don’t know too many politicians that shy away from debate.” Resident Dave Willis was among those who made a presentation against moving ahead with the new facility, which is expected to cost about $16 million. Willis said he would prefer to look at other options such as buying St. Martin School and renovating the old arena to make it a single storey. He was also shocked at the committee’s refusal to second the motion to open discussions. “I took it as a vote of no confidence in the mayor,” said Willis.

Special Olympics curlers off to nationals

The ice may be gone but the memories of a fantastic season are still very vivid for the members of the Grimsby-Lincoln Special Olympics Curling team. The team attended Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games in North Bay in February and after a very demanding weekend of curling came home with a silver medal. They left North Bay not knowing if they had qualified for the National Games in Cornerbrook, NL in 2016. The first

week of April it was announced they have qualified for next year’s Special Olympics National Winter Games. The team is beyond excited and eager to begin the training and practice they will need to compete at a National level. Grimsby-Lincoln Special Olympics would like to thank Chimney Top Masonry and The Grimsby Curling Club for their generous support as we started and continue to build the program.

Raptors, reptiles and nature displays all part of RaptorFest Celebrate Earth Day with a visit to Raptorfest this Saturday. “I would like to invite everybody to join us in celebrating Earth Day and to learn more about the Raptor spring migration over Grimsby,” said Rick Quirk, festival co-ordinator. “There will be photo opportunities with live birds of prey, as well as other animals and reptiles so dont forget your camera.” Raptorfest runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peach King Centre, Livingston Ave. Saturday, April 25. Secrets to keeping an organized shed Despite other intentions, homeowners often turn their garages into storage centers for random, little-used items, leaving little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actually belong in a garage. Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equipment at the ready, but storage sheds are not immune to clutter. It’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of work gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you know whether you’re missing any

items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap wood to use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed to organize additional items. In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed

back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe.

Shipwreck payloads are attractive to older ships and by 1979, this vessel fit the bill. After loading at Piraeus, Greece, Orpheus sailed for Yenbo, Saudi Arabia, and almost made it. But, on June 17, 1979, the ship was wrecked on Shuaiba Reef, on the Red Sea, not far from Yenbo. It was abandoned by the crew on June 23, when the vessel began to sink. All 29 sailors on board got off safely before their ship went to the bottom.

Lies, damned lies and semantics How does the saying, “there are three kinds of lies: Lies, damn lies and statistics” apply to Niagara Peninsula Energy? It doesn’t unless the word semantics is substituted for statistics. In the matter of Rex Ge versus power giant NPE, the company’s vice-president customer service Margaret Battista told NewsNow in March that a customer’s account balance and history are reviewed and considered as part of a process before a disconnection is implemented. Today, Battista noted in an email to NewsNow, “NPE doesn’t discriminate between amounts owing”. It is understood and unchallenged that a process is there and needs to be there, but with something as definitive as disconnection, there should be special attention paid. Which is true? Are balances considered or are they not? Battista says the $364 amount owing was considered, which further confounds as any reasonable person would consider it nominal for a winter bill for a greenhouse. M.W.

No seconder a disservice to public I’m a little confused...even more than normal. Monday marked what could have been a seminal moment in West Lincoln’s development as a great place to live, work and play. The reason: at its Public Works Committee meeting, the matter of a new multi-use facility (arena and otherwise) was to be discussed. The new facility being pushed by Mayor Doug Joyner carries a tab of about $16 million. During the fall election run and front and centre at the West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s mayor’s debate was the multi-use facility question. Generally, everyone agrees the township needs an upgraded facility as, for example, the growing seniors population needs and is deserving of a quality building in which to conduct events – among other activities. At the very least, the current arena facility is in dire need of an overhaul. It has been estimated that much of what those in the community say is desired could be had for a much more modest investment – something in the range of $6 million to $6.5 million. Aside from the core of this issue, it is downright shocking to see that not a single member of the public works committee would even second the motion put forward by Joyner, which was to proceed with the plan for a brand new facility. It is so profoundly routine for a committee and councils to second any motion as that has to be a starting

I get that they may disagree with the mayor – who told me after his October election win that he believed his victory provided a clear mandate to proceed with the fully new facility model since it was a cornerstone of his campaign – but they could have simply voted against the motion AFTER a vociferous debate. It should be noted, the general public, which packed the room Monday night, did have an opportunity to speak, pro and con, on the subject during the public delegation portion of the agenda. If that aspect of public input was stifled as a result of this lack of a seconder issue I would re-

ally flip. So I am happy the people had their say. That said, this move by the committee members is SO stark, it raises serious questions about their interest in supporting their mayor. Having never seen or heard of anything like this in 30 years of covering councils of all shapes and sizes, I could not see this as anything other than a collective slap in the face. How not? All the same results could have been achieved by routinely seconding the motion, getting it on the table, debating ad nauseum, and then voting against it. What does this statement mean? I guess we’ll find out. All that noted people of West Lincoln, if you faced a 10-year debenture for a $16 million facility, or the wind turbine people said they would donate, say, 50 per cent or even all of the cost, would you accept it? Just postulating out loud. ****** For those who have heard rumours about a paper closing, it is not us and it is not in this area. It seems Torstar may be opting to cut its Niagara This Week Wednesday edition in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls and may change the circulation day of its full market edition in that area. Program launched to welcome cyclists peddling through town Grimsby’s Bike Friendly Business Network was officially launched Saturday. As part of the program, coordinated by the Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area board, cyclists working their way through the core can expect to get things like a bottle of water or a bike repair kit at participating businesses. Pat Maloney, chair of the Grimsby’s Active Transportation Committee, lauded the DIA’s support. “This is a great step for Grimsby and it is great to see the DIA supporting it,” he said.
