Perfect weather greeted participants to Grimsby Kinsmen Club’s annual Easter Egg Hunt at Centennial Park. More than 2,000 eggs were hunted by kids in various age categories. The club also ran draws while the Kinettes hosted a barbecue to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research.

Grimsby IT structure in need of overhaul Consultant John Naas left no stone unturned when explaining to Grimsby town council that every aspect of their IT department needs to be overhauled. Naas spoke at Monday’s council meeting to confirm what council knew - their IT infrastructure was beyond dated and in disrepair. Naas outlined what needs to be done and ballparked costs to achieve the goals. As priorities, he said he would target the technical upgrades needed and establish an appropriate gover-
nance structure. “You lack governance,� said Naas, adding “ineffective communication� has magnified issues with the staff structure. “This ads to frustration within the IT team and creates a lack of confidence. There is no prioritization when you have 10 things. That’s a queue,� said Naas. The IT expenditure is just one of the budget items facing Grimsby council. Tuesday night, council continued its budget deliberations with a meeting at town hall.

Murphy gets his 15 minutes If one watched Episode 2 of “Canada, The Story of Us”, a documentary which aired in March on CBC, you might have had a difficult time recognizing Grimsby’s Mike Murphy. This even though he is seen 46 times in the show’s final 15 minutes. Mike portrayed an explorer in a team headed by Alexander Mackenzie, hired by the Northwest Company to find a navigable path to Canada’s west coast in 1793. Seated at the front of a long canoe, carrying five other explorers with Mackenzie, his dog, fur pelts and supplies, Murphy paddled hard during the one-day filming last spring in Jordan Harbour, 20 Mile Creek, and Balls Falls. “I’m sure even my mother wouldn’t recognize me, all decked
out in a bright red coat, black head scarf, long red hair and a beard,” said Murphy. Canoeing along the scenic creek, then later portaging the boat up the hillside and standing atop Balls Falls was an exciting and exhausting day for Murphy, who, himself, is a well-travelled outdoorsman. “But this time I got to go back in time over 200 years and understand the struggles it took to cross the country,” he said. Murphy also had a role in setting up the location for the film shoot. He and Greg Parker, owner of the Niagara Rowing School and Paddlesports Centre in Jordan Harbour, were asked to scout out the best filming area available in 20 Mile Creek, and then be responsible
for transporting 30 cast and crew, plus their equipment. Just a half-kilometre north of the Bailey Bridge by the Jordan Campground, there was a picturesque fallen tree in the curving creek, beside a flattened area for staging the scenes. “It could just as easily been almost anywhere in Mackenzie’s journey, without the rapids, of course,” mused Murphy. “I have to give credit to the entire team who put not just this short segment into a 10-part documentary, but an entire history lesson that celebrates the achievements of our nation. All’s fair in love, war and MURS? There was an ever-so-brief flicker of hope when West Lincoln Coun. Joann Chechalk asked a series of questions at Tuesday night’s planning committee meeting about council’s ability to phase in elements desired in the controversial recreation facility drama which has played out over the last year. Funny thing was it was the exact same line of questioning she asked at the Feb. 21 committee meeting as she focused on council needing the ability to choose aspects of the RFP (which was only tabled Tuesday) to match NEED and an appropriate budget to keep costs in line. In February, West Lincoln CAO Chris Carter said “yes”, council would have that ability. Tuesday, after Chechalk said, “I am looking for how this happened? We may have mislead members of council and we may have mislead members of the public”, Carter’s tune change 180 degrees. Carter said council decided to go one project, one build in October when it approved proceeding with the RFP. It was all or nothing now. There are a lot of elements of this process and its handling by an ill-prepared council and staff - like the rural vs urban divide created - but, even in the end, council could not even get a straight answer on a key piece of information right before a crucial vote that would obligate the municipality for 30 years of financing is truly tragic and a affront to every taxpayer. It was mentioned Monday night at Grimsby’s fun-filled council meeting. I wonder if they teamed up with Trump to get dual quotes for wall construction? ******* So let’s turn our attention to the mind-melting subject that is regional transportation. I say regional, but this also incorporates local systems and programs as well, as I see it, as all under one umbrella. If you go back, way back to the good ol’ days when Debbie Zimmerman as regional chair, she was always a big proponent of getting an inter-municipal transportation system in place. There are other proponents, but Debbie is seen as kind of a baseline for regional issues in that her opinion, to this day, carries a great deal of credibility in that she is one of the few politicians who are seen to have the ability to listen to all information which comes down the pipe and offer up an informed opinion at the end of the day - an opinion which is balanced and as fair as possible. This is important as not all decisions are “fair” and the ones that try to hard to straddle the fairness line of any equation are doomed to failure. Over the last two years in particular, I have had a steady stream of seniors coming into my office stressing their need for some sort of transportation system. Reasons varied from a need to get to friends for a
MIKE WILLISCRAFT weekly movie and shopping trip in Hamilton, to doctors appointments, connections to the GO bus lot at Casablanca and others. This was all magnified by the closure of the local milk run bus route which connected Hamilton to Niagara Falls through small communities along the way - with pick up and drop offs right at our front door in the centre of Grimsby. These are important needs from a sector of the population who deserve some level of service in their golden years as they have paid the freight for decades. BUT, and this is a big one. Grimsby - and Lincoln and West Lincoln for that matter - simply cannot afford what is currently being considered. With this comment I am stretching a bit in that I am keenly aware of Grimsby’s consideration and I attach Lincoln and West Lincoln in that Grimsby has talked of connecting to them in some manner, so one would have to assume there would be some similar level of service in those other communities at some point. Before last Christmas Michael Rozender sent me an email stating Grimsby should simply contract with Uber for local ridership
needs as it would be cheaper to subsidize an independent system such as that than absorb a whole system which would continue to run busses regardless of ridership due to preset schedules. Years ago, I had ongoing debates with Debbie that we - speaking on behalf of the municipalities - simply could not afford a transportation system, in any incarnation. It just cannot happen. On Monday at Grimsby council there was a bit of a dust up in that some of the aldermen said they have gotten zero benefit from the $1 million-plus already fed into Niagara Region’s pilot transportation program. In a recorded vote, council voted 6-3 to support the region’s transportation initiative. The vote was surprising since it was clear some members clearly did not understand all the ins and outs of what they were voting on as the same questions got asked time and time again...followed by nodding, then a vote. Given Grimsby’s financial state, constant and shocking penchant for seeing multimillion dollar cost overruns for virtually everything it touches, every resident should be shaking in their boots that the Town would consider adding a costly new transportation system to the monetary weight on the taxpayers’ collective back. The best thing that came from the discussion was the possibility of the regional system running a bus straight down Hwy. 8 through Lincoln and Grimsby connecting to the GO stop at Casablanca. If that flies, use Uber for connections and Bob’s your uncle.
