WL has injunction to cease dumping 1,000 trucks were expected in one-week span when first injunction obtained By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Injunctions have been obtained by the Township of West Lincoln to halt the influx of fill into the municipality. The problem is not a new one, but it reached a breaking point in March when it was learned as many as 1,000 were expected in the span of one week. For many months,

the township has been working on developing a by-law to deal with the dumping of fill which has been shipped to the area from construction sites across southern Ontario. Among the issues, none of the fill has been tested for possible contaminants of any kind. In particular, many comments and concerns have been raised regarding sites

on Hwy. 20 and another nearl Grimsby Road and Concession 7. Last fall, as part of their by-law review, council held a public meeting regarding proposed changes which would give the municpality more control over what gets dumped into the township. Opponents say the township has no right to control what indi-

viduals do with their land. Coun. Joann Chechalk said West Lincoln has a by-law in place but it does not go quite far enough to protect the residents of the municipality. “We have a by-law in place that prohibits importing of fill,” Chechalk said. “Council is looking at the site alteration bylaw again next month. We (were granted)

the injunction because of the by-law. The matter is before the courts now and so I can’t say anything else at the moment.” Chechalk did note, after an initial injunction expired, the township’s lawyers did go back to court to obtain in extension which expires April 21. In the meantime, some trucks have “been trying to sneak in but were caught.”

A major focus is the intersections at King with 19th Street and Main Street. “The previous option envisioned Main Street and 19th Street south and King Street to be signalized with the north portion of 19th Street restricted at King Street to right turns in and out only,” said Kirkopoulos. “However, based on feedback from the public, this previous option was not being well received by the community. As such, we went back to the drawing board and refined one of the other options that proposes to make both

legs of 19th Street and King Street signalized with Main Street closed at King Street.” Parking in the area is also a front-burner issue, but Kirkopoulos said it is still developing. “Overall, we will be upgrading 19th Street to an urban standard from King To Fourth Avenue and providing a significant amount of on-street parking opportunities that currently do not exist. This is very conceptual at this point and requires further analysis and discussion,” he said. Coun. Paul MacPherson said reaction was generally positive. “Overall though, the project puts forward a vision for the broader community that was positively received,” he said. “There were definitely more positive than negative comments.”

Nominations for FORT’s Cutest Dog Contest, part of the Dogs 4 Youth fundraiser, open next week, April 21. The contest is a highlight of the second annual event which will run at the Peach King Centre on May 21. This year, admission will be free to see exhibits, vendors, live music and activities from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Owners can nominate their pooch on facebook until May 4. Controlled voting will be run from May 5-16 with the winner announced at the event on May 21. “Everyone can bring their dog, as well,” noted Beth Shaw, FORT’s (Foundation of Resources for Teens) executive director. “We didn’t have a single issue last year. Owners know if their dog is good around other dogs and each is responsible for their own dog.” As well, a collection of food trucks will be on site, for those who want to sample some unique mobile fare. Visitors will get their own “swag bag”, too. “We are still looking for a few more vendors, but the response has been great. How does a successful small business celebrate its fifth anniversary in its location? They move. “It was just time,” said Jon Acheson of Beamsville Music, now located at 4520 Ontario St. in Beamsville. “The parking is great for customers here and the space works very well for us, too.” Jon, along with his wife, Sara, were both teaching music prior to attending college and during. “Our whole life was music, so opening a store seemed like a perfect fit,” said Sara. Jon had an opportunity to learn the ropes of small business while working at another music store and he has been able to implement much of what he learned in running his business. A big part of their business has proven to be instrument repair, said Jon. As well, they are expanding into developing album sales with vinyl covering all genres. Offering a complete roster of classes, singing and instruments, the couple said their roster of teachers, all having 20-30 years of experience, are a great team. “We are very proud of the quality of all of our people. They all write and perform. They get it,” said Jon.

Retirement units set for Beamsville Lincoln Council approved the development of a 114-unit retirement residence, slated to cost $25 million dollars to build and bring to market. WLMH future bright

Dear Editor, If anyone ever doubted how strongly West Niagara residents feel about West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH), our March 3rd community meeting in Grimsby would surely have laid any doubts to rest. We at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) were happy, and not surprised, to see approximately 250 people packing the Livingston Activity Centre for a standing-room-only crowd. I would like to thank everyone who attended that evening. The support that the hospital enjoys from this community is something to be proud of. More importantly, as we plan for the redevelopment of WLMH, the level of engagement from the community is very important. The purpose of the March 3rd community meeting was to share details about the planning HHS has undertaken for the future of our care in Hamilton and West Niagara. To re-cap the main points: HHS is committed to the redevelopment of WLMH – it is a top priority The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has made it very clear that we need to create an integrated plan that shows how all HHS’ programs and services will work together. This includes the care we provide at WLMH. Our vision for WLMH is based on input from many stakeholders, including the communities we serve, our staff, physicians and partners. Our plans, once complete, must be approved by the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN and the MOHLTC. We have recommended to the MOHLTC that WLMH be a demonstration site for integrated community care – this is one of the hospital’s major strengths. We see the future WLMH as a community hub – possibly locating other community health services in the new building. The key programs we’re proposing for a redeveloped WLMH are: • 24-hour Emergency care • Maternal & Newborn (low-risk births) • Community Surgery (an innovative, ambulatory model for same-day surgery for residents of West Niagara and Hamilton) Community Medicine: • Healthy aging and seniors’ care • Specialty clinics (such as general internal medicine, pre-op, geriatrics, mental health) • Advanced diagnostics (echocardiogram, ultrasound, proposed CT scanner) There were many questions at the community meeting about hospital beds – how many and what kind there will be. This is something that is still being discussed by our physicians and staff and we will communicate the outcomes of those discussions as soon as we can. At the request of the deceased, burial has taken place at Grimsby, laid to rest with wife Bernice, entrusted to TALLMAN FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 16th for visitation at 10:00 a.m. and a celebration of his life service at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 10 Mountain Street, Grimsby. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to St. John’s Presbyterian Syrian Refugee Fund. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the dedicated staff and earth angels at Millenium Trail for their loving care and compassion during Ron’s stay. The upshot is that there will be only six hours of quiet time for sleep. The mayor was smiling all through the process as it means more money for the $16-$20 million Doggie Dome entertainment centre (arena). Initiated by the mayor last year and seconded by Bylsma, spending more than $35,000 dollars for a study for entertainment necessities was more important than studying for the incoming Industrial Wind Turbine (IWT) problems. The health and welfare of approximately 200 people within 2km of the IWT’s and the condition of our roads and bridges was of less importance than the friends and relatives that would benefit from the long term debt to

the municipality. (The meeting) upset many ratepayers who are living with the construction problems. Nobody spoke in favour of council’s actions. The agenda behind closed doors and removing the word “impact” from the “COMMUNITY IMPACT FUND” did not help. Council does its own thing without explanation and the public’s wishes were ignored, again. It appeared that the decisions were made before the doors opened for the evening, and the assembly was just a formality to make the taxpayers feel good by participating. Thinking way outside the box On occasion - honestly, it does happen once in a while - I see or hear something which strikes a chord and makes me think. On a normal day, all I do is think, but it is typically work-related, stories to do next, appoints that are set, projects to create, events coming up...there is always 4-5 things on the go at any given time. Now, I’ve been a nighthawk since I was 13 or so and begged until my mom gave in so I could stay up until 11:45 p.m. to watch Johnny Carson’s monologue. I still miss him. But I do try to give the modern day pretenders a try. Fallon? Always like him on Saturday Night Live and appreciated his freshness on what used to be The Tonight Show, but his everything-is-the-greatest style has ruined it for me. I need a good dose of insulin after 15 minutes of that show. Colbert, darker, more edgy, still giving him some rope. He tried to be as current and informed as Letterman, so at least he tries to conduct semi-real interviews around the pure entertainment. Kimmel, right in the middle. For my money, the best right now is James Corden, he of the carpool karaoke. The point of all this is not to provide a simple review of late night chatterboxes. But it is to explain why I was watching Shirley MacLaine on Colbert on Monday night. She is not one of my favourites. I always kind of set her aside some-

Different strokes.... On Monday, she was flogging a new book, generally based on some thinking she was doing. Obscure thinking, but in lies the chord which struck me. She was reading about the lost city of Atlantis: her belief there that an addiction to money proved the downfall of the society. “When you get addicted to materialism, you lose your soulfulness. That might be what is happening to us,” she said. There was other explanation around it, but that was the heart of it. Contrast that thinking, that chase for the almighty dollar, and the credibility for such a belief builds. I am a skeptic to the chore. I’ve seen too many thinly veiled projects and plans which were little

more than make-work or vanity projects to take things at face value any more. Much of today’s global problems centre around greed and you can trace much of it back to the U.S. decision to invade Iraq and put the boots to Saddam Hussein. That whole exercise was an oil field control expedition to me. Yes, Hussein was up to no good, but good ol’ buddy George W. was hell bent on making an example of him. That invasion and all that followed has ushered in a global situation even the most pessimistic among us could not have foreseen. It was that “addicted to materialism” phrase which I was stuck on. We hear routinely, the richest one per cent on the planet own 99 per cent of the world’s wealth. Concentrated much? Oh ya! So think about this: if a multi-billionaire took just $1 billion of his/her portfolio and distributed it to ALL Canadians, every man, woman and child would have $28,570 in their respective pockets (based on the current 35 million population.
