Residents brave the cold, long lines for COVID jabs By Joanne McDonald NewsNow Hundreds of residents braved frigid weekend temperatures for a COVID-19 vaccination at the Lincoln Community Centre and Grimsby‘s Town Hall. An estimated 1,000 people turned out Saturday and the line up was already forming by 5:30 a.m. Sunday In Beamsville for the 10 a.m. clinic start.
The weekend vaccine clinics were coordinated by Lincoln and Grimsby officials with the GO-VAXX Mobile Clinic team to give eligible individuals vaccine or booster doses. Vaccinations were on a first-come, firstserved basis. “People are braving the cold for this vaccine,” said Chris Mulhern, site lead in Beamsville for Medavie Health Services.
Retired teachers Uwe and Patricia Zimmermann of Grimsby joined the line at 8 a.m. Sunday morning. “We have to trust health and science,” said Uwe. “We need to set an example for everyone.” But he wonders about the future. “It’s disturbing. Where do we go from here? Will we be a pin cushion?” “We have been through many challenges together through the pandem-
ic and know we can do it again; we have demonstrated we are a resilient community. Please stay safe and get your vaccination when it’s available to you,” Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton said in a statement from the Town. “I’m doing my part,” said Heather German. In consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Ontario government is taking action to encourage vaccination

The measures were established to help reduce the risk of transmission during the winter months and encourage every eligible Ontarian to get their vaccine to protect hospital capacity,” Easton said. In Grimsby, those in line were appreciative of the clinic and the staff running the show. “I am absolutely grateful to have
been vaccinated there today. It felt safe and well organized and the Red Cross staff were friendly and helpful. They handed out numbers so people could wait in their cars instead of on the sidewalk. This definitely made a difference for people with mobility/ health challenges who could not stand in line for a few hours,” said Grimsby resident Celeste Taylor. More clinics are being planned for in 2022.

Round 2 for The Woolverton apartments By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A proposal for a sevenstorey, mixed-use apartment building at 19 Elm and 13 Mountain Streets went through its second public meeting - via Zoom - last week. Consultants noted the location comes under “downtown district” with its related intensification range for that area. The maximum height allowed is currently four storeys, but council can consider up to six. The Official Plan amendment with the proposal requests a sevenstorey maximum. The project would preserve the original historic structures on both lots. Planning staff supported the demolition of modern additions to the heritage buildings, and called for their original buildings to be designat-
ed as heritage and protected as such. Harley Valentine of developer Castlepoint Numa said, “The Woolverton is to bring residential, retail and community spaces together into a vibrant, mixed-use landmark site at the corner of Mountain and Elm.” Proponents of the project cited many key aspects which make the apartment building strategic and supportive of long-term health for downtown, mainly: • 73 units would provide needed rental units; • The density brings positive benefits to downtown and fit with related planning principles, and; • several components set with “green” planning make the project environmentally friendly and forward thinking. Parking, traffic issues
and density remain core concerns for some residents. “By introducing a hirise development in downtown will almost certainly change the sense of place,” said resident Sandra Yemm, suggesting some developers are “not respectful” of the Town’s planning bylaws. There was a long list of supporters lined up to speak in favour of the build, including Grimsby Benevolent Fund executive director Stacy Elia. “The economic arguments for this build are strong but we feel there are other crucial factors that support this build,” said Elia, noting the rental option in the proposal is a key need it would fill. Village Inn still missed 50 years on One hundred years ago, 75 years ago, even 50 years ago, Grimsby would have been rocking at this time of year! The centre for all the fun and excitement would have been the Village Inn, on the corner of what is now the intersection of Main and Mountain Streets. The sturdy stone building had been built by Robert Dolmage, and consisted of two residences with a commercial space (often a doctor’s office) in the middle. The property was purchased in 1906 by John Hewitt who added a large addition. The commercial area at the front became the lobby of the Village Inn, and the upstairs was converted to guest rooms. The residences at the front allowed for
A Small Drop of Ink By Dorothy Turcotte spacious verandas. Grimsby was proud of its famous Village Inn. One of the main features of the inn was the Oak Room which became well-known for fine dining and dancing to a live band. Many special events were held there with many famous people visiting, including politicians and George Formby and his wife. After John Hewitt died in 1919, the Village Inn was purchased by Napoleon Servais who had also owned hotels in Timmins and Haileybury. When one of his northern guests couldn’t pay his bill, he gave Napoleon a deed for land near Kirkland Lake. The
company Servais Gold Mines was created, and Servais opened a local stock trading business across the street in the Mansion House which was also an annex for the Village Inn. After WW II, the Inn was purchased by Gordon Hannah. When he hired the talented Peggy O’Neil as hostess and singer, the business really took off. Everyone for miles around heard of the inn when Peggy sang on the hotel’s radio announcements “That’s Peggy O’Neil!” The Village Inn was torn down in 1973 to make way for parking! A 1990s Town Character Study said that Grimsby needed an outstanding building in that location! With red faces, heritage lovers admitted that we had one and let it go.

The generosity of our donors has enabled the Foundation to approve grants totaling $2.2M for much needed medical equipment. To date, $451,405 has been transferred to WLMH, fulfilling needs for Emergency, Maternal and Newborn, Clinical Support Services and Community Surgery programs. The remaining commitment of $1.75M is in the Hospital’s procurement process. These funds are expected to be transferred to WLMH within 2021 or 2022. The Take it to the Finish … Building a Healthy Community Campaign continues towards success in helping build and equip the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. We look forward to when construction will begin. Our community will be served well by the new state of the art facility, providing clinical, surgical, emergency, maternity and newborn services in a safe, warm and caring environment. Through your generosity and our communities working together, we will achieve the overall new hospital local share goal of $50M. You will find an article in this issue by our Campaign Chair, Andrew Smith that this campaign is doing well. Last year, we started this message off by noting how remarkable a year 2020 was. It’s safe to say that 2021 has followed a similar path. Over the past 12 months, our teams across Hamilton Health Sciences, including those at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH), have continued to demonstrate resilience, dedication, and courage serving patients with unwavering compassion in the most challenging of times. Staff and physicians continue to rise to each occasion and meet every difficult endeavour head on. At WLMH, we saw many staff bring their highly specialized skills to other hospital sites, helping out in the hardest hit patient care areas, and others volunteering their skills at vaccination sites. Some programs at the site saw twists and turns as the hospital followed the government’s direction in response to the unrelenting virus, changing the way our providers deliver and patients receive care. All of that turbulence did not stop progress on major WLMH initiatives. For the first time in the site’s almost 75-year history, patients can now get timely and critical computed tomography (CT) scans in West Niagara. This momentous achievement was the result of many years of work by many hands – in the hospital, the Foundation, the community and at Queen’s Park. The site is now also home to two new x-ray machines and a new mammography suite, allowing more opportunity for preventative screening close to home. As we head into 2022, we are just months – yes, months – away from construction being able to start on the new hospital. Getting here has taken immense effort, energy and emotional investment. It has been a long road travelled, but when shovels finally break ground on this long-overdue project, we think we will all agree that it was time well spent. On behalf of Hamilton Health Sciences, we would like to wish our staff, physicians, volunteers, families, donors, community and supporters a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season, and what promises to be a very exciting New Year.

Heading into an exciting year for WLMH By Kelly Campbell VicePresident, HHS Corporate Services and Capital Development We have never been this close to rebuilding West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH). With every day that passes we get a little closer to the finish line. From Hamilton Health Sciences’ (HHS) perspective, we cannot get shovels in the ground soon enough. The current hospital has served its purpose and redeveloping the site will create the care
environment our patients and teams deserve. While we are close, we still have a few more items to check off the Ministry of Health’s list. Last month, we
received technical proposals from the three teams competing to build the hospital. Together with Infrastructure Ontario, we are closely reviewing these proposals now. In January, the teams will submit the second piece of the Request for Proposals (RFP) which are the financial plans for the project. Once we receive these documents, we will have the information needed to select the winning team. A period of negotiation with the preferred proponent will follow as
we work toward getting a contract signed by all parties. We should be in a position to announce the successful team in the spring. Then, we head into a process called “financial close” which is essentially the point where we can give the build-site keys to the successful team. The schedule for construction will be determined by the successful team, based on their proposal. We have let each team know that our desire – and the community’s desire – is to get this project moving as
fast as possible. Our team at HHS knows how important this project is to the hospital and the community around it. We are grateful for everyone who continues to stand by the hospital, support our teams, generously donate to equipment and the rebuild campaign, provide excellent care to patients, and keep new hospital planning moving diligently and quickly toward the finish line. We are excited about all that 2022 can and will hold for WLMH.

Getting Closer to the Finish Line! By Andrew C. Smith Campaign Chair It has been an incredible 2021! Together, as a community, we were tasked with raising the local share of $50 million, and we are so close to reaching the finish line with just less than $1 million to go. Everyone has certainly had much to maneuver this year; and fundraising during a pandemic has not been without its challenges. We are succeeding because of our dedicated donors and volunteers who
have continued to work steadfastly in support of the Take it to the Finish, Building a Healthy Community Campaign. We wish to acknowledge all that has gone on before
us, too. There have been many involved in the efforts to see the vision for a new hospital come to fruition. Throughout the campaign, our volunteers have learned over and over again, from their conversations with donors, that WLMH is truly a community hospital. They have heard how much the community believes in the future of WLMH and that giving back has been an expression of appreciation for the exemplary care given to their family, friends and loved ones.
The Trees of Healthy Wishes campaign has been a very special part of our family’s life. We participated in the launch of this campaign 15 years ago. Lighting the trees up and giving to do so helps our campaign to build and equip the new hospital. Each gift brings us one step closer to crossing that finish line. As Campaign Chair, and on behalf of the Campaign team members, we would like to say thank you to all our donors, volunteers,
staff, advocates for the new hospital, and everyone who is making a difference to ensure a better hospital for healthcare in this community. We know that the care at WLMH is unique and special and it’s worth investing in life. We look forward to serving you in the days ahead and in 2022! Let’s continue to cheer each other onward! New school for Beamsville, child care spaces for Grimsby Two major announcements last week mean advances for local education with a new Catholic elementary school in Beamsville and five new childcare rooms in Grimsby. Minister of Education Stephen Lecce and Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff were on hand to make the announcements. The new Beamsville school will include 421 student spaces for a price tag of $10.1 million. The project is part of a provincewide investment of more than $600 million to support new school and child care spaces that were recently announced by Lecce.. The overall investment will support 78 school and child care related projects. “In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made safer schools a priority, which is why we continue to invest in modern and accessible learning spaces with improved ventilation,” said Lecce. “This investment is part of our multiyear plan to build, expand, and update schools and child care spaces across our province. Grimsby Museum hosts Christmas Village display Anyone wanting to get out and stretch their legs over the holidays can check out Grimsby Museum’s Christmas Village Display. This is the New England Village Series collection of Kenneth Murray. Kenneth was born in 1935 and was raised in Hamilton. He was a lifelong teacher with the Hamilton District School Board and had a passion for geography. After retiring Kenneth went into competition with his sister who col-
lected the Dickens Village Series. His sister stopped at 10 houses, but Kenneth continued and collected over 100 houses and accessories over a 25-year period. He had a 32-foot permanent display of the villages in his basement. Museum hours are: Wed. 1-7 pm; Thurs, & Fri. 1-5 pm; Sat. Noon-4 pm. Admission is free but donations to Golfi and Friends Fundraising, in support of McMaster Children’s Hospital are appreciated.

The chamber’s new office is located at the former Beamsville library branch at 4996 Beam Street. It will be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3. While a slate of major events such as a January Business After 5 event in January and the annual Breakfast with Politicians - set for Feb. 11 - was announced it is unclear if any provincial restrictions will affect those events.

Niagara region tree collections dates set Niagara Region’s Christmas tree collection will take place on residents’ regular collection day during the week of Jan. 10-14. Artificial trees are not collected. Residents should: • Use the large item collection service to dispose of artificial trees; • Placing trees at the curb; • Place tree at the end of their driveway no later than 7 a.m. • Remove all Christmas decorations (bulbs, tinsel, lights, etc.) before collection; • Don’t place Christmas trees on top of or inside a snow bank. This may cause
injury to collection staff when trying to remove it. • Don’t place tree inside a bag as it creates a problem when chipping the trees, and; • Winter weather may delay pick-up Weather conditions may delay collection. Leave your Christmas tree at the end of the driveway and it will be collected. Residents can also take Christmas trees to a drop-off depot or landfill site Christmas trees can also be dropped off at any landfill site free of charge. West Lincoln implements COVID changes The Township of West Lincoln has initiated new COVID safety protocols in light of provincial changes. While a 50 per cent capacity limit was announced last week for some venues, the following additional measures will be required at Township recreation facilities, including the West Lincoln Communi-
ty Centre, Caistor Community Centre, Silverdale Community Centre, and Wellandport Community Centre: • As of Monday, proof of vaccination will be required for youth aged 12 and up who are participating in organized sports at recreational facilities, unless they have a valid medical exception.

Passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with a brain tumor on Saturday, December 11, 2021 in her 72nd year. Born in Montreal on November 8, 1950 and moved with her parents David and Gwen Clark to Welland in the mid 1960’s, where she attended Centennial High School. Fran saw employment with Smiths Stationery and A&P Food Store. Her last employment was with the Ontario Coroners office in St. Catharines. She leaves behind her partner of 25 years Frank Jones. She will be missed by her children Amanda and Chad (Allison). Fran adored her grandchildren Peyton, Alexander, and Sawyer. She will be remembered by her siblings Patty (Robert), Lynne (Serge), Bruce (Karen) and Lindsey (Norma). She was pre deceased by her parents David and Gwen also her brother Ross. Fran leaves behind her beloved Shih Tzu Sammy and long-time friends Sylvia and Gary Peters. A Celebration of Frans life will take place at a later date, please check back to the website for updates. Call your councillors Not a week, rarely a single day, goes by when someone doesn’t call or drop in to voice a rather strong opinion regarding some aspect of Grimsby council’s antics. No doubt phone lines (or digital airspace) was burning up after the odd lack of interest five members of Grimsby council took last week regarding the hunters shooting ducks along the Lake Ontario shoreline. As Alfred Lord Tennyson cited, “Ours is not to reason why....” There was no reason as to why or how five members of council arrived at a decision that guns aimed in the general direction of shore was not of enough importance to expedite a staff review of the situation. When these instances arise, NewsNow’s therapy couch is always available to you, but if you want answers, go to the source. Call your councillors and ask them why they do and say what they do. If it’s Christmas, time for “It’s the night...,” With apologies to Clement C. Moore: ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the place; Not a creature was stirring they were done with the race. The stockings weren’t hung in the chimney’s old grooves; The hope was St. Nick would know where we had moved. The children were nestled all snug in their beds; The difference was we’d just moved to a brand new homestead. Our family of nine was divided, right to the core; But just like Grimsby Council I won the move vote 5-4. As I checked each empty room for the very last time; I sprang to the living room to turn off the mantel clock’s chime. Then out on Main Street, a crash there had been; I ran to the window to check out the scene. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow; Gave a lustre to the town, a nice picture it showed. When what to my wondering eyes did I see; But a man dressed in red shouting, “Hey, they’re shooting at me!” The little old driver, who went by St. Nick; Shouted misguided hunters cut him to the quick. Darn Grimsby council had done it again; Allowing hunting near Main Street is a colossal pain. Nick’s amazed this bunch exhibits no shame; He whistled, and shouted and called them by name. “Now, Ritchie! Now, Kadwell! Now, Vaine and Dunstall!;
MIKE WILLISCRAFT On Sharpe, you’re smashing Grimsby into a wall!; To the top of the porch! To the top of the roof!; There’s one more year of this dastardly spoof! For when the leaves next turn and wild hurricanes fly; Municipal election 2022 will be nigh. So up to the housetop the courses they flew; With a sleigh full of toys and best intentions, too. Then, as I heard prancing and pawing of each little hoof; I drew my head ‘round as he came down the chimney with a thud and a poof. He was dressed all in red, very colourful garb; One thing was for certain; he was hunting for carbs. A bundle of toys he had brought along; He looked and he glanced but found his location wrong. His eyes, they were merry, but squinted at this finding; What he really wanted was a condo at Prudhomme’s Landing. “Social says LJM is selling and I want a unit”; Santa was not happy Town of Lincoln had not yet approved it.
He clenched his pipe tight, he was an unhappy fellow, Growls and snarls were all he could bellow. He had a broad face and a little round belly, He scarfed up his snack – peanut better & jelly. “I need my booster, is there a clinic on the go?” This man was wise, definitely in the know. With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head; He remembered a spot on his route was just ahead. He spoke not a word and concluded his work; Stockings filled, gifts left, no job was shirked. Then raising a thumb to show “good to go”; He headed out for his sleigh to get back on the road. He sprang to his sleigh and stepped on the gas; Away they all flew, making just one more pass. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight; “Merry Christmas to all and let’s forget about 2021 and look ahead to 2022 with optimism, excitement and good cheer!” ***** That sentiment above certainly is how I feel. Unless you were in the right place at the right time as far as your business goes, and for many in their personal lives, 2021 stunk! At some point we are all going to have to move on, act in a responsible manner, but return work, lives, play and socializing some semblance of “normal”. Merry Christmas to all, and best of the season as well as best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2022. We could all surely use it!
Grimsby no longer safe, says reader Dear Editor, Recently, after 30 years of having a nohunting bylaw, the Town of Grimsby has quietly amended the bylaw to now allow hunting. For something as important as public safety, a notice should have been mailed out to every household to inform residents of the recently held meeting with mainly hunters at-
Letters tending. Should a few dozen hunters dictate what happens in our great community? How would we all feel if a child or anyone was killed by a stray bullet or arrow while playing or going about their business in their own backyard or in a park?
These discharges can travel great distances, so nobody is safe now certainly above the escarpment and in certain areas below the escarpment in more populated areas. You and your children may never see a deer again if the handful that are left are killed off. If hunters need that feeling of power or
“rush” from killing a defenceless animal, do it somewhere that does not put people in harm’s way. Residents of Grimsby need to call, email or visit Town Hall - if they ever open it up - and tell them they want the bylaw amendment rescinded to make Grimsby a safe place to live, work and play again. could”. We are, indeed, a struggling congregation. Both numerically and geographically we are insignficant. However, we live in an amazing and supportive community.
This event gives us the chance to share in that friendship, fellowship and laughter. This year’s bazaar was our most successful to date and allowed us to increase our support to West Lincoln
