Allison cruises in Niagara West win By MIke Williscraft NewsNow Monday night’s federal election stuck very close to the script, or at least the script predicted by most polls. Dean Allison posted another dominant Conservative win in Niagara West with 45.5 per cent of the vote. The Liberal’s Ian Bingham earned 32.2 per cent of votes,
according to Elections Canada, with 195 of 197 polls accounted for at press time. The rest of the field, in order, were: NDP’s Nameer Rahman; Green’s Terry Teather; Christian Heritage’s Harold Jonker and People’s Party’s Miles Morton. Federally, there were a handful of upsets but from beginning to end - as things un-
folded - it was very much as many expected, a nasty election road which led to a Liberal minority government. “There were some common themes during the campaign,” said Allison. “We heard repeatedly, “We don’t like Trudeau. We don’t know Andrew Scheer and we’re not happy with Doug Ford, either.”
Those themes, mixed with an economy which has been solid of late, Allison said, paved the way to Monday’s result. “In Alberta the economy is fragile and they need the pipeline to get built. Region’s garbage pick-up reduced to alternate weeks Niagara Regional Council approved alternateweek garbage collection effective fall 2020. The change - which was approved Oct. 17 - will apply to garbage collection for all low-density residential properties (single home and properties with 1-6 units) and for those industrial, commercial and institutional and mixed-use properties located outside designated business areas. A key reason for the change is nudge the Region along in achieving its waste diversion targets, according to Niagara West regional
councillors. “Niagara Region has a goal of 65 per cent diverted material. We have been struggling to get above 55 per cent. In random surveys, it has been found that 50 per cent of waste placed out as garbage (to landfill) is organic waste. An additional 14 per cent is obvious recyclable material,” said Lincoln Reg. Coun. Rob Foster. “With numbers stalled, regional council sees this change as a positive,” said West Lincoln Reg. Coun. Albert Witteveen. “With every other week collection it was

Community engagement sessions at Lincoln Museum Lincoln’s economic development department began reaching out to various stakeholders in the community’s tourism industry in May. Already, the Town has identified a number of key points that will go into its strategy. “We want to focus on the quality of tourists over mass tourism,” said Paul Di Ianni, economic development officer for the Town of Lincoln. He added that initial talks found that stakeholders from wineries to historical sites and beyond preferred to cater to tourists who want a more in-depth experience. “They don’t want the bus loads of tourists, because they don’t get the full experience.” Another important aspect of the tourism strategy will be collab-
oration. This includes both collaboration with members of the tourism industry within Lincoln, as well as with tourism strategies in neighbouring municipalities like St. Catharines. “Tourists don’t care about borders between towns,” explained Di Ianni. “We’re stronger if we can push various groups together,” said Coun. Paul MacPherson, who was present that evening. The strategy will also address how the Town can upgrade its signage and way-finding tools as part of the overall strategy. Included in the various suggests are proposals for upgrading the municipal sign on the highway and installing colour-coded signage throughout the municipality to help tourists navigate. Di Ianni said that this
aspect of strategy is dependant on collaboration with the regional government, which is conducting its own research into a signage strategy in the upcoming year. Di Ianni will be presenting the outline for the Tourism Strategy to council on Wednesday, Nov. 20. During the same night, the Lincoln Museum was hosting a community engagement session of it own. At the presentation, museum staff showed blueprints of the new 4,200 sq. ft. building and highlightedj possible programming. The building is estimated to be completed sometime in late August 2020. It will have three main rooms for exhibition space, and an entire basement given over to storing and curating artifacts.

Lincoln residents had a chance to get a sneak peek at the new initiatives coming their way in the tourism sector last Wednesday. The Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre’s interim location in Beamsville hosted two different community engagement sessions simultaneously: one for Lincoln’s Tourism, Gateways & Signage Strategy and the other for the Lincoln Museum & Cultural Centre Strategic Plan. The first event explained the themes and direction of Lincoln’s upcoming tourism strategy, which is slated to be finalized as a five-year plan in February 2020. This comes after the town passed its economic strategy, which identified tourism as an economic pillar. Representatives from

Help the University of Guelph improve hearing healthcare across Canada. Connect Hearing and Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing. Study Parameters The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from oneon-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.
Why Participate? It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In this study you’ll be playing an important part in determining the key factors around identifying hearing loss and what influences the decision to seek treatment.
Participants will be significantly adding to growing knowledge surrounding hearing loss.

Niagara Children’s Business Fair Nov. 9 These kids mean business. Come out to the first ever Niagara Children’s Business Fair at the Ball’s Falls Centre for Conservation on Nov. 9. The market is like none other. Every vendor is between the ages of six and 14 years old, selling their self-created products and services. The fair is open for business between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. It’s a cash only event, but parking and admission are free. School-safe snacks will be accepted at the door for donation to community crew which organizes region-wide school lunch programs. This event the brainchild of two local volunteers: Jessica Estabrooks and Cathy Bouwers. They created it as a way for kids to develop business skills in a safe, supportive and rewarding environment. September 1, 1937 October 17, 2019 Dennis Lynes died at home at the age of 82 on Thursday, October 17, 2019. Predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Carolyn Lynes and brother Morgan. Survived by brother Richard and sister Susan Kizlyk and numerous nieces and nephews. Dennis was born in Hamilton and enjoyed a successful career in the plumbing and pipefitting trades. He loved to fish, tell tales, and spend time at his Florida retreat. Compost for GBF From Oct. 21-26, West Niagara residents can take home compost for their gardening needs by support ing the Grimsby Benevolent Fund (GBF). The Niagara Region will be giving out up to three bags of compost per vehicle to West Niagara residents at the Niagara Road 12 Landfill on Concession Rd. 7 in West Lincoln during regular business hours, while supplies last. In exchange for the compost, residents are required to donate non-perishable food items or cash in support of GBF to help those in the community who need assistance. Each bag of compost is 20L in size.

Hmm, let’s try Plan B The ribbing after last week’s Mayor’s Breakfast was kind of funny, but the undertone was stern...”Hey, we’re watching you!”And rightfully so. There was a miscue at the breakfast when the Q&A portion of the agenda, which was printed and placed at each seat in the room, was skipped over. Normally, a nondescript error. However, not in Grimsby. Not these days. Not when wounds from the antics of the last council have not yet begun to heal. For a group which ran on a platform based on transparency and accountability, it was not a good look. Mayor Jeff Jordan certainly recognized that and has initiated a new event this fall to allow anyone at the breakfast and the general public to attend what he called a “council open house” where all issues will be on the table for discussion with any and all questions welcome. Not ideal, but an excellent move nonetheless. M.W.
Time for politicians to simply do better Generally, topics of a federal nature don’t make the grade for column material much, not because such fodder is not important but it is all about priorities and NewsNow’s priority is Niagara West and what is happening in our fishbowl. Monday night’s election certainly impacts all of us, even though Dean Allison was returned to his seat in Ottawa after another decisive win. It was a strong showing, but not as crushing as others in the past. The result, with roughly 45 per cent of the vote, was indicative of the unrest felt, in general, across the country. Take your own straw poll of 4-5 people. You will find they supported a range of political parties and for different reasons. This was a messy, at times nasty, campaign which teetered on the U.S. style of mudslinging and struggled to settle on a definitive issue on which Canadians could agree or disagree. It was all over the map. When that happens, voilà, a minority government. The night was like many others I have covered. First, I checked out the initial returns from the East Coast, then headed to the winning candidate’s election night HQ, hung out until speech time, and then headed home to watch televised coverage until 2 a.m. or so. My main point this week will focus on the speeches of the major party leaders: what were you guys thinking? Jagmeet Singh of the NDP blabbed on forever. You’d think it was the first time he had control of a mic. The country is waiting to hear what the leaders have to say. You finished behind the wretched Bloc...take your three minutes and move along.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT He seemed to not want to do that, so the Conservatives’ Andrew Scheer made his march to the podium and CBC cut to him...with due apologies to Singh, but come on. Scheer had not said a word yet, when Trudeau walks out to upstage his political foe and CBC cut to him, as the winner, to hear his full speech. For my money that was the right move and, afterward, they noted commentators noted this was not common - for leaders to talk over themselves - and went back to play Scheer’s full speech. Pundits fell short of calling Trudeau’s move classless, but I won’t. He has a reputation of being a cocky, privileged sort. He certainly lived up to that. Commentators wondered - before he started - if Trudeau would be humble and recognize the voters had dressed him down for various shortcomings in his last term, or if he would come out guns blazing. He chose the latter. For me, when he said his Liberals were being sent back to Ottawa with a clear mandate I almost laughed out loud. Dude, you went from a decisive majority to a minority government. Maybe we can agree you got a mandate,
but I am pretty darn sure we would settle on very different versions of what that mandate is. If he thinks the Libs are doing great, keep ’er steady as she goes, the Conservatives will win next time around. Back in my days as president of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association, keeping the board of directors herded in the direction of a common goal was not always easy. Not only did we have issues from across the country, as does the House of Commons, but we also had corporate and small independent publishers mixed throughout all provinces and territories, not unlike the mix or rural and urban voters. A leader has to be able to relate to and gain the confidence of all regions of the country. Trudeau was given an opportunity last time and squandered it. It would have been really good for the country to hear him say just once Monday night, “We hear you, Canada. We will do better.” Then the country could have said, ok, he gets it, let’s see what happens. If you’re in Alberta, which voted almost entirely Conservative, you are cheesed off because Trudeau just served notice you are getting more of the same. Canadians have said the same was not good enough. If the Conservatives want to do something about that, Andrew Scheer needs to do better himself. He made NO connection with Canadians and made several amateurish mistakes along the campaign trail. This was an opportunity lost. Federal Liberals need to do better, just like Premier Doug Ford needs to do better in Ontario.

GHS collection featuring Grimsby parades, festivals and events. Photos featured in the calendar share memories from the early 1900s to the
2000s – spanning over 100 years of Grimsby history. Calendars cost $10 and the proceeds go towards funding the nonprofit GHS Archives.
