Transplanted Newfoundlanders - Sean Comeau and Amber Mouland, now of Grimsby - got a visit from Sean’s sister, Sydney, and her boyrfriend, Andrew Choma, over Thanksgiving. On their itinerary was picking out pumpkins at the Pumpkin Food Drive at Hildreth Farms, sponsored by the Lynn Fee Team of Keller Williams Realty. Grimsby Glows set for Nov. 1 downtown Cool air - check. Leaves turning - check. Pumpkin-mania - check. A new item of the Fall checklist is the Grimsby Glow event - the sleeper success off 2022 and back for its second year on Wednesday, Nov.1 in the newly revamped Coronation Park. “We had more than 2,000 people go through last year. It was great,” said Trevor Ruzylo, project coordinator at Town of Grimsby. The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Grimsby, with support from the Town. This year, more than 400 glowing pumpkins will set the park aglow. “We are welcoming everyone in the community (and those beyond Grimsby as well!) to come enjoy creatively carved and lighted jacko’-lanterns set along the newly finished pathway, alongside beautiful fall harvest displays/ vignettes, a selfie photo booth, light refreshments and Halloween blow-ups,” said Liz Fisk, Rotary’s president. “Our local fortune teller, Madame Erica, is back for another year to pull cards with special messages for all who enter her tent.” Visitors can enjoy pumpkin-themed displays, free refreshments and Instagram-worthy pho-

NRP launches obscured license plate campaign Niagara Regional Police have initiated a campaign to deal with motorists’ obscured license plates. As of Oct. 1, officers in St. Catharines/Thorold) began Phase I of the six-month traffic campaign, which will move around Niagara Region. Licence plates are meant to be able to provide unique letters and numbers to be able to identify a specific vehicle. The ability to clearly see a licence plate can be of critical importance in the event of a

collision, medical emergency, investigating crime, or ensuring accountability related to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. With Niagara Region initiating speed cameras on Sept. 5 as well as some red light cameras, obscured plates will come more into play. The effectiveness of this program is dependent on road users having a clear, unobstructed license plate that can be photographed by the cameras, say police.

A message from the fire chief’s desk

Niagara West Fire Rescue is excited to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign from Oct. 8-14, 2023. The theme of this year’s campaign is: “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention”. The campaign aims to educate the public about the small, but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe. Year after year, cooking remains a leading cause of home fires, accounting for many of the of home fires we see in Lincoln and Grimsby, and across Ontario. These numbers tell us that there is still work to do when it comes to better educating the public about ways to stay safe when cooking. Niagara West Fire Rescue encourages all residents to embrace the 2023 Fire Prevention Week theme and offers these key safety tips to

help reduce the risk of a cooking fire: 1. Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking. 2. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Never put water on a grease fire! 3. Have a “kid-and-pet-free-zone” of at least 1 metre around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Remember, in a fire, seconds count. Make sure your home has working smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms. Dr. COOPER, Nicholas William

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at Deer Park Villa, on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the age of 79. Predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Elsie Cooper. Loving father to David (Carey), Patrick (Kay), Eric (Kim) and husband to former wife, Linda (nee Stanley). Cherished grandfather of Mackenzie, Anna, Noah, Anderson, Cameron, Brooklynn, and Madison. He also leaves behind his sister Nancy (Steve Carter), nephews Ryan Carter , Tim Exton and niece Carrie Exton. Dr. Cooper was born and raised in Welland, ON. He attended Welland High School and was a founding member of the CLODS club (Nick, Bert, Harvey, John, Frank, Jim) which continues to this day. He graduated from Dental School (University of Toronto) in 1970, then moved to Grimsby to open his dental practice that same year. Dr. Cooper served the Grimsby and West Lincoln community as a Dental Surgeon for 47 years at his practice, Grimsby Dental.Nick was a lover of all things with motors and was an avid recreational pilot with his floatplane endorsement. He enjoyed cottage country and spent many summers north of Peterborough where he liked boating to destinations on the Trent-Severn waterway. He loved people and will be remembered for his remarkable ability to make others laugh. A heartfelt thank you to his special companions who have supported him throughout this difficult journey. Also, our sincere appreciation for the care and comfort provided by the amazing nurses, PSW’s and staff at Deer Park Villa, in Grimsby, over the last six years. Allan was born in Welland and raised on the family farm on Fitch St. He received his MSc from Queen’s University in 1958. Allan enjoyed the challenges of his work at Dofasco as a Mechanical Engineer in Product Development. Dad cherished his time alone with his thoughts, whether as a boy by the stream on the family farm or as an adult tending to the grapes on his own farm. It was a happy day when West Lincoln crossing guard Laura Davis was able to buy a wheelchair-accessible van to be able to mobilize her daughter, Alyssa. Laura started her own fundraising effort by selling chocolate bars at Foodland in April and the community rallied its support. Just a few of those helping out were Turkstra Lumber’s barbecue, Re/Max agent Wayne Schilstra’s barbecue, Woodshed donated $10,000, as did Stanpac. In all, $60,600 was raised for the 2020 Dodge Caravan. Well done, West Lincoln!

Long-standing issue now gets attention This week is going to be a bit of a grab bag as several topics have been hanging about needing attention, but seem get shuffled. Shuffled no more. It was interesting to see Niagara Regional Police have initiated a program to focus on obscured license plates in the region. Anyone who drives sees obscured plates every day. So why now? Simply, Niagara Region wants to capitalize on its new cash cow - the speed cameras and red light cameras - which was launched Sept. 5. Yes, in some manner, the new speed cameras may help with safety - but thinking back to the regional presentations at local councils, I was not buying what they were selling. They didn’t agree, when questioned, to commit to a “buffer” when a fine would kick in. In Hamilton, some drivers have gotten tickets for as little as 4 kms, which is downright silly. They also would not commit to keeping the cameras operational only during main drive times in the safety zones, which are set in front of schools. If they were intended for safety, they would only need to be active during school hours, but regional officials said at the time they would not be turned off. So in Grimsby, in front

MIKE WILLISCRAFT of Blessed Trinity or Park School - the two safety zones in town - motorists could get a ticket (with higher fines than normal) for going 7-8 kms over the 40 kph limit while driving home from the grocery store at 9 p.m. when there isn’t a car or pedestrian in site. So, it has very little to do with safety and more about enforcing speed in a monetized manner, rather than expending police department resources to generate even less money. A machine can crank as many tickets as cars can pass in the blink of an eye and for nominal infractions, which no real officer would ever bother with. Automation does not take reason into account. A motorist is either over or under the set “limit”. That’s it. That’s all. To be clear, I don’t have an issue with the premise of the program. I just wish regional officials had been honest about the intent. Safety was a convenient mask to hide behind be-
