Grimsby greenlights Peach King expansion grant application By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Working to very tight deadlines, Town of Grimsby has approved a submission for a Peach King Centre expansion grant application. The proposed project would serve nine of 10 identified needs highlighted in the Recreation Master Plan which
was completed this spring, said Sarah Sweeney, director of Recreation while making a presentation to council on Monday night. The federal grant program - which included two-thirds federal funding - was rolled out in June and has a Nov. 12 deadline, said Sweeney, noting programs with that level
of coverage are rare. Some of the items included in the expansion proposal are: a full-size, dividable gym; indoor walking track; multiuse rooms; youth room; preschool space; rooftop leisure space, and; general facility upgrades including parking. The budgeted cost - which includes contracting a proj-
ect manager - is $22 million. The town portion of the bill would be $5.87 million with the remainder being picked up by the federal and provincial governments. “We don’t want it just to be accessible, we want people to want to come through the doors,” said Sweeney. See PKC, Page 3

Rittenhouse Rd. to get sidewalks in upgrade Vineland residents living near Rittenhouse Rd. will soon be able to walk with confidence in their safety. Lincoln unveiled its plan to upgrade Rittenhouse from King St. to Victoria Ave. to a full urban road standard. The planned road improvements will include storm sewers, new road base, and paving with concrete curb and gutters, concrete side-
walks and street lighting upgrades. Lincoln’s manager of technical services, Walter Neubauer said that safety was “the number one driver” behind the project. “A lot of people are concerned about safety along this road,” he said. With all the improvements, Neubauer said that the new road will have speed reduction
“built into its design.” In addition to the safety upgrades, the project will install storm sewer infrastructure. Neubauer said his department aims to tender the project to council in January should they receive budget approval and “if everything goes well” construction could begin as early as April 2020.

Maggie, who has studied dance for almost her entire life, poured 14 years of learning and practice into her audition. She said she is not worried about winning. From the Legion to the sea and back again By Tristan Marks For NewsNow Navy veteran Barry Stark’s warm demeanor contrasts against the brisk and overcast Nov. 2 afternoon. He stands in his full Royal Canadian Legion uniform; from his naval beret to four medals across his chest and the bright red poppy against his navy blue jacket. Stark is out to canvas poppies for Remembrance Day. He never asks anyone to come buy one, but people dutifully grab a flower after slotting a coin into the box he’s holding. “We’re not supposed to solicit poppies,” he said with a chuckle. “I just wait for them to come to me.” A skilled storyteller, Stark passed some of the time by recounting story after story about his time in the Royal Canadian Navy. “Most people probably wouldn’t be able to recognize any of these medals,” he said as he began explaining what they meant. The only time Stark paused his otherwise easy conversation flow was to consider why he joined in the first place. “Everyone has their own reason to join,” he said after pondering for a few seconds. “I just didn’t want to be a GM employee, I wanted to be part of something important.” He said he misses the camaraderie and

Missing that connection, Stark eventually joined the Royal Canadian Legion in 2005, fives years after he retired from duty, citing the need to bond with his “family”.
The legion he joined was Beamsville Branch 612. This was a homecoming of sorts in and of itself. Before enlisting in the navy, Stark spent his youth in the cadet corps sponsored by that very same legion. “I was part of the original cadets at that same Legion,” said Stark. “I did a full circle.” Stark’s father was also in the navy, and he even had an uncle who fought on the European mainland during the Second World War. “They gave up a lot,” he said. “Every one of them went over there to help the security of our nation.” Stark will be parade commander for the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Jordan Cenotaph on Friday, Nov. 8 and then again at the Beamsville Cenotaph on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Harmony Deslauriers Local Air Cadets of the 62 Phantom Grimsby Air Cadet Squadron have spent the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day serving their community by selling poppies and practicing for their presentation of an 18-hour vigil at the Grimsby Cenotaph. These activities have been communicated as part of Operation “Lest We Forget” in an effort to support the Legion and raise community awareness about the military efforts of Canada. This is not only the busiest part of the training year for these cadets but would not be possible without support from the community and their supervisors and support staff for these events, Civilian Volunteer (CV) Nigel Biggs and Captain Christopher Boyle, CD. Flight Corporal (Fcpl) Michael Gore, an active member of the squadron and a participant in this year’s vigil, spoke about the effort. “I think it is our way of giving back
as well as it lets the community know who we support and represent,” said Fcpl Gore. These events also speak to the cadets on a personal level. Warrant Officer Second Class (WO2) Abby Lampman who plays a significant role as an organizer and staff cadet said, “I do it for my great grandfather who was a prisoner of war and my brother who is currently in the Canadian Forces.” “When I participated for the first time four years ago, I didn’t understand the significance, but I do now,” added WO2 Lampman. From 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10 to the end of the Grimsby Remembrance Day ceremonies, cadets will be standing guard around the Cenotaph to pay their respects for veterans’ past and present. Other members of the squadron, including the military and pipe and drum band along with a colour party, will also be participating in the community service.

Record year for turkey roll A crowd of over 200 packed into the Peach King Centre auditorium on Friday night for the Grimsby Fire Fighter Association’s annual Turkey Roll. This year marked “one of the best turn outs” for the event, said organizer Linsey Austin, having raised $11,300. This beat out last year’s number by nearly $3,000.

Passed away at United Mennonite Home, Vineland, on Monday, October 28, 2019, in his 91st year. Beloved husband of the late Mildred (nee Thomas) (2001). Starting his teaching career in the early 1950s, Robert taught in a one-room schoolhouse prior to teaching Elementary school in Hamilton. Never one to stay still, he then moved on to Highschool English. With the completion of his Masters of Education, he spent several years working in Adjustment for the Hamilton School Board, then moved on to Highschool Guidance at Delta Secondary School. Always an avid photographer, Robert took the plunge in 1977, and opened “The Grimsby Camera Shoppe”, which continues to thrive through his son, Bryan, as “Village Studio”. His retirement years were spent traveling and taking Fine Art photographs, through which his love of photography will live on. Cremation has taken place. Not a fan There was a very preliminary discussion at Grimsby council on Monday night dealing with remuneration of councillors and the mayor. It was noted Grimsby lags far behind - as much as 40-50 per cent - other like-sized municipalities on pay levels for council members. While some level of adjustment may be in order, any pay increase should be established for the 2022 incoming council. Passing a pay raise for oneself at any level is just not a good look. Yes, previous councils should have paid more attention, but they were - no doubt - needing to keep biodigester coffers topped up. Council approved having a salary study done, and rightly so, but a pay hike should be set for the next term. As Coun. Dorothy Bothwell noted, all know what they signed up for, so would the new council. M.W.
Grimsby in right place, right time Tons of things going on, so I’m going to split this offering up to cover maximum ground I got in touch with Major Richard Robinson, Commanding officer of the 62 Grimsby Phantom Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets when researching information on this year’s cenotaph vigil. He noted he had a cadet who has been taking a writing course and may want to work on something. That is how Harmony Deslauriers ended up submitting an article on the vigil. Great and appreciated! I did not want to edit her work too much, but I had an extra paragraph I could not fit and it is important, so here it is: The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-18 years old with a focus on leadership, citizenship and healthy living. Check out their ad on the preceding page and good luck to all involved there!!! ******* A considerable amount of time was spent Monday night talking about the grant submission for the Peach King Centre at Monday’s council meeting and rightfully so. It is true one should not look a gift horse in the mouth, in this case, the gift horse being the federal government. It was said a 2/3s funding program is rare. They sure are. I don’t recall one off the top of my head. Yes, there have been 1/3-1/3-1/3 with feds, province and local municipality but this is even better than that. It is a very good thing the Grimsby Energy Board pulled a rabbit out of its hat on the biodigester sale or it is likely the Town would not have been in a position to take on any significant financial exposure for several years until they worked out
from under potential debts. The move to get a townrun gymnasium can do nothing but good for the community in the long run. Anything that can get away from dependence on District School Board of Niagara for gym use is a good thing. No doubt Grimsby Basketball Association and a bunch of other user groups must be stoked at the prospect of having a new base of operations. Overall, the timing could not better, too, with the Recreation Master Plan having just been completed. Those documents can pay for themselves in instances just like this as most grants require background work to determine eligibility. When a long-planned document can be produced which highlights that nine of the top 10 needs identified in the community via study can be filled with a project, that speaks volumes in terms of support. Governments at any level don’t like it when Johnny Come Lately shows up with his hand out for a quickly made up proposal generated after a grant was announced. That is not to say that important projects do not come up on short notice, but municipalities often try to sneak a spot at the trough. It is ALL about timing. Look at West Lincoln. Without question, when one looks at the need for a new community centre there a few years ago, their whole project would have generated two-thirds funding under this grant program. No, they could not wait, so no finger pointing or blame of any kind. It is just the luck of the draw in terms of timing. Grimsby is in the right place, right time to take advantage.

BBBS Curl for Kids’ Sake returns Nov. 16, 17 The Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) have called on the community once again to take part in the annual Edward Jones Curl For Kids Sake on Nov. 16 and 17 at the Grimsby Curling Club on 277 Kerman Ave. The organization set their sights on raising $30,000 for its 30th anniversary. Spaces are running out fast. BBBS special events coordinator Mary Champ said the event was “very close to a sell out” at the time of publication. In addition to registrants, Champ said BBS is looking for community sponsors to help them reach the event’s goal for this year. All money raised will go towards BBBS mentorship programs. This includes the one-onone mentorships the organization is named for,
