Murder Monday in Grimsby on The Lake Niagara Regional Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Grimsby on The Lake on Monday, Nov. 27, around 5:30 p.m. About that time, 8 District uniform officers responded to a call in the area of Concord Place and Windward Drive in Grimsby following the report of a parking lot shooting at a nearby condo. Officers arrived on scene and located a male suffering from life-threatening injuries. Officers provided medical attention before the adult male was transported to an out-of-region hospital by Niagara Emergency Medical Services (NEMS) where the man was pronounced deceased. This investigation remains on-going by detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service Homicide Unit. There is no information to suggest that there is a continued risk to public safety. Anyone who may have information in relation to this incident is encouraged to contact the lead detective at 905-688-4111, option #3, ext 1009103.

by a councillor again and again and again, so we’ll leave it at that,” said Jordan. DiFlavio had a clarification of his own. “I made it clear that I didn’t want to debate. It’s up to the chair to determine if that is appropriate or not and I have to accept your decision,” said DiFlavio, noting he forwarded his questions to staff. “I do want to make it clear I knew the procedure,” he said, adding he would like clarification for future meetings if questions should be allowed and cut off if it turns into a debate. “And I appreciate that Coun. A long-time dream becoming reality Supporters sign last structural beam to be installed in new hospital

The last structural beam to be installed in the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) will have the strength of the community that has been holding it in place for the past 23 years. And it will be installed with the names of many who have helped bring the vision for a new hospital in West Niagara to fruition. Government partners, elected officials, community partners, donors and staff were on hand Thursday for a ‘beam signing’ celebration held on the front lawn of the WLMH Foundation offices. The hospital construction is on track and on budget for completion in 2025, Save & Rebuild WLMH Committee cochair Tony Joosse told the crowd. It was a long time coming, but has moved quickly, Joosse

said, since the fall of 2019 through five stages of planning and forming an alliance with EllisDon. Chair of the Foundation’s campaign to fundraise for the new hospital, Andrew Smith said it’s been an honour to ‘Take It To The Finish.’ “The campaign goal of $50 million was one of the largest philanthropic goals every undertaken in West Niagara,” Smith said. “The schedule is good to go for the 2025 opening….turning our dream of a new hospital to reality.” Foundation chair Kevin Antonides said the Foundation has launched its annual Tree of Healthy Wishes campaign, an annual fundraiser that supports the hospital. He thanked Marz Homes for their donation for an endowment fund to support the hospital.

Determination can overcome disabilities With Dec. 3 marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Olivia Book, 20, of Grimsby shows that having an amputation doesn’t stop someone from living a vibrant and fulfilling life. Embracing the help of artificial limbs and adaptive devices, she’s able to fully participate in her favourite activities, like ballet. Olivia was born missing her right arm, and as a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, she is eligible for financial assistance for the cost of recreational and everyday prostheses and daily living aids. “The War Amps has been a part of my life since I was five months old. With their support, I have been fitted with different devices that help me take part in activities like kayaking, skipping rope, tennis, and riding my bike,” says Olivia. “They have been a tremendous support to me, encouraging me to pursue all my interests, like ballet, and showing me the sky is the limit.” War Amps receives no govern-

Originally built by Colonel Robert Nelles, the manor was completed in 1798. It is located at 126 Main St. W. in Grimsby. Before it was converted into a museum in 2016, it was the home of Barry and LInda Coutts, who curated the property over decades. Now, for the Christmas season, it has been done up in its Victorian era best. The tours will go at 1 p.m.; 2 p.m.; 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-13. By Melissa Marchewka Cynthia Samuels described her husband Lloyd as her rock, someone who did everything for her and their family. When he passed away in July 2021, she needed help to navigate her grief journey. In February 2022, upon her doctor’s recommendation and her brother’s encouragement to get professional support, she contacted McNally House Hospice’s Bereavement Clinician Jennifer Jowlabar and began her road to healing with one-onone counselling. “Jennifer would just explain (the feelings) to me and make them okay so that next time I felt them I knew that, ‘Yes. This is what I’m supposed to be feeling. It’s a good thing.’” Cynthia said. Cynthia has also joined in on the bereavement pro-

grams and groups that McNally House offers. She has participated in art therapy, the summer walking group, and a group farm visit. These groups have expanded Cynthia’s support sys-

her deal with her grief. “My family is better. My kids don’t worry as much about me....” Samuels said. “So I know that what I was going through affected them. Obviously, it’s their

father, but in a different way because watching me go through it couldn’t have been easy for them. But listening to me talk about how I was being helped — I think that helps [them].” Cynthia says without the help of McNally House she doesn’t know if she would be anywhere near the person she is now after her husband’s death. In addition to provincial funding, which supports a portion of our nursing costs, more than $1M is needed annually to ensure the hospice residence and all other community programs remain available. Giving Knitters group has got the community covered By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow The ‘Giving Knitters’ will be warming hundreds of heads, hands, and hearts this winter with the work of their own hands. They’re an eclectic and industrious group – knitters, loomers, crocheters and quilters – and they share the same passion to do good work for the community. But meeting with the members last week at Church of Christ in Beamsville, it seems there are side benefits to keeping busy as well. For loomer Edd Robertson, “it’s his diet program,” said his wife Marie Robertson, who knits and crochets. “If he’s making hats, he’s not eating snacks”.

“It’s a great past time,” said member Marie MacKay. “I can’t just sit and watch television.” It was a similar sentiment from most of the group. They like to keep busy said Helen Whitfield. Rosemary Phillis was just six years old when her grandmother taught her to knit. She was living at the time in St. Alban’s, England, where by the way Phillis said, adding a good bit of history, St. Alban’s Cathedral boasts the longest nave of any cathedral in England. Organizer Barbara Smith said the group started 12 years ago donating 36 handmade hats and has grown to an astounding 450 hats and 119 pairs of mitts, as well as neck

warmers, head bands and sweater shawls to be distributed this season. Smith said the warm winter wear is headed in a number of directions, including District School Board of Niagara’s Education Foundation of Niagara to be distributed where needed, to the Westview Centre 4 Women. They also work with Start Me Up Niagara and the Salvation Army. Giving Knitters draws members from across the community and new members are always welcome. “We also welcome any donations of yarn you may not be using,” Smith said “Worsted is best but we’ll take anything.” You can call her at 905-5623865.

We are spoiled rotten here and many don’t realize that. It’s too bad more people cannot experience other social settings as there would be a much greater understanding of what having a giant insulator such as the Greenbelt means now and in the future. It is a very good thing. That said, it is unfortunate those who do support it cannot seem to maintain a factual basis for their efforts to maintain its standing. Last week, the repeated comment about preserving farmland...yes, important. Also, not even a remote factor in either parcel of land which were to be lifted from Greenbelt protection in the now-doomed provincial government plan.

One has been brush land for decades. The other was a community hall and park. Neither have any impact whatsoever on parkland, so that is a nonstarter. Also, once again, comments seemed to position this debate as one of Grimsby council asking for something heinous and inappropriate. If that were the case, the Greenbelt officials who admitted and agreed the parcel between Oakes and Kelson was never supposed to be in the protected land package in the first place - and was included in error - must have been all wrong then? And when Town of Grimsby, as instructed, waited until the 10-year appeal window to submit its case to have two such erroneously included parcels removed from the Greenbelt - and offered other land in trade - they got torched again. The Greenbelt officials took the land offered and gave nothing in return - giving Grimsby a net loss when they should have had more. So, yes, provincially, there is a need to fight vigorously to preserve the Greenbelt, but when one ignores the local realities of Grimsby’s situation it weakens that fight across the board. That look perpetuates the “they’ve gone too far” mentality and fuels Greenbelt opponents needlessly.
