Green Heron youth remove 573 lbs of Jordan Harbour garbage Tens of thousands of vehicles pass over the QEW bridge at Jordan Harbour every week giving little thought to what may be beneath. Well, the Green Herons Club (GHC) and a group of dedicated volunteers were, to the betterment of the community and the area.

Lindsay Currie, who manages GHC, said 15 youth ages 7-12 spent three solid days - Nov. 14-16 - picking up garbage in the area mainly left by fishermen who frequent the area. “For National Tree Day we cleaned 16 Mile pond and removed 31 bags of trash. It was there that we met Ed

Kwarta, a concerned citizen, who alerted us to the similar issues in Jordan Harbour,” said Currie. “The kids immediately sprung into action and contacted the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority to get access to a boat. They ended up removing 44 bags of

trash (from Jordan) bringing their annual total bags to 96 bags!! (weighing 573 lbs)” Once done, the crew sent a letter to NPCA asking them to start issuing maximum fines to help control the issue as there are no bins provided or maintained on provincially owned lands.

NPCA adds 790 hectares to Canada’s protected target area The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), Ontario Nature and Conservation Ontario announced this month the addition of 11 properties, encompassing 790 hectares, towards Canada’s ambitious goal of protecting 30 per cent of its lands and waters by 2030. With this recent addition, NPCA’s total contributions to the national protected areas target now stands at an impressive 1,622 hectares, which is equal in size to four Stanley Parks in British Columbia, or, closer to home, almost 650 Montebello Parks in St. Catharines. Canada endorsed the goal, known as the 30 by 30 target, as part of the landmark Global Biodiversity Framework at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal last December. The 11 properties, evaluated in partnership with Ontario Nature, include Beamer Memorial, Cave Springs, Humberstone Marsh, Lathrop, Louth, Morgan’s Point, Mountainview, Mud Lake, Wainfleet Wetlands, Willoughby Marsh and Woolverton. Each property – all of which are accessible to the public with the exception of Lathrop which is held in trust by NPCA – was assessed for its unique ecological characteristics and diverse ecosystems and determined to meet the strict

national standards for the protection of biodiversity, qualifying them as Protected Areas. Many of the submitted properties occur along the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, which represents the largest continuous forested area in south-central Ontario. The properties play a critical role in the conservation of this ecoregion and its characteristic species, which include species at risk such as barn swallows, monarch butterflies and butternut trees. The Niagara Escarpment plays a vital role in sustaining biodiversity and natural heritage features. Its unique geological formations, diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes make it a haven for plants and animals, as well as the many residents and visitors that come to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. By implementing strong policies and management strategies on these properties, NPCA has prioritized the conservation of biodiversity within the Carolinian Life Zone where its watershed jurisdiction is located to safeguard it against growing environmental threats within the Greater Golden Horseshoe. This is an important step towards preserving the natural beauty, ecological health and ecosystem resilience of the Niagara Peninsula watershed.

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Many local families and seniors need help from the community to get through Christmas this year. “Without Village of Hope I wouldn’t be able to put on a Christmas meal for my family,” said one mom registering for the hamper and angel program. “I’m just trying to keep on top of the heat and hydro. This allows me to bring my family together.” Village of Hope Niagara CEO Cheryl Keddy-Scott reminded the woman she hadn’t written down a single thing for herself for Christmas. “Christmas morning, I just want something my kids can open,” she said. “It’s not about me.” The need has doubled this year with 500 families, 100 seniors and hundreds of children registering for the Season of Hope Hamper & Angel program. “We knew the numbers would

What is an Official Plan The Official Plan is an overarching land use planning document for the entire Town. It implements the community’s overall vision for growth and development. The Official Plan addresses such issues as housing, the natural environment, heritage preservation, employment needs, agriculture, commercial services, tourism, parkland/recreation, servicing and transportation.

About the Official Plan Review Project The Town’s current Official Plan was approved in November 2016 and since then, the Province has made significant updates to the Planning Act, amendments to the Clean Water Act, and released a new Growth Plan, Provincial Policy Statement, Greenbelt Plan, and Niagara Escarpment Plan. In addition, the Niagara Official Plan was recently approved in November 2022 and provides direction for the growth and development of all of Niagara Region with a planning horizon to 2051. The Town of Lincoln is undertaking a review of our Official Plan to bring it in conformity with the latest provincial policies and recently approved Niagara Official Plan, as required by Sections 26 and 27 of the Planning Act. The Official Plan Review is also being undertaken to ensure that the new Official Plan addresses significant locally-identified issues, reflective of community goals and objectives. Rotary’s Fantasy of Trees kicks off today The launch of Grimsby Rotary’s 24th annual Fantasy of Trees is set for today, Nov. 23, at Grimsby Museum. The 10-day event officially opens with an opening ceremony at Noon that day. It continues until Sunday, Dec. 3 conducting operating hours of Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; closed on Mondays. Rotary club member and event lead organizer Jim Noordermeer said a whole host of prizes are up for

grabs this year. “Theme Christmas trees, wreaths and draw prizes are all part of the mix. As well, people can bid on silent auction items online or in person, too,” said Noordermeer. As a wife, mother, sister and teacher, Judy had incredible compassion and care for others. How fitting then, that she spent her last days at McNally House Hospice, where compassion and caring are the essence of all that is done. Melissa Fournier, Judy’s daughter, heard about McNally through the media and Hike for Hospice. Once her mother became a resident of McNally, Melissa was totally amazed at the extent of the kindness and thoughtfulness shown to all residents and their families by staff and volunteers. Notice of Public Information Centre #1 Schedule “B” Municipal Class Environmental Assessment

King Street (Regional Road 81) Rehabilitation between Nineteenth and Twenty-Third Street, Town of Lincoln

The Study Niagara Region has started a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study (the Study) to evaluate alternatives for improvements to King Street (Regional Road 81) in Lincoln to allow for active transportation, improve traffic safety, and develop options for the failing retaining wall along the corridor. The project will extend from Nineteenth Street to Twenty Third Street in Lincoln. The length is approximately two kilometers and extends between the communities of Jordan and Vineland. The site location and approximate Study Area are shown on the study area map. The Process Niagara Region is conducting this as a Schedule B project according to the planning and design processes as outlined in the 2023 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (the Process) which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The study will meet the Phase 1 to 4 requirements of the Process. The Process includes: • Consultation with agencies, stakeholders, Indigenous communities and public • An evaluation of alternative solutions to address the problem • An assessment of potential environmental impacts; and • Identification of reasonable measures to mitigate any potential adverse impacts When the study concludes, a Project File Report will be prepared for public review. A Notice of Completion will be issued at that stage. You are Invited to Participate Niagara Region is hosting the first of two Public Information Centres planned for this study. To that end, after I heard I was getting trashed on a Facebook page Charrois “manages” - I didn’t bother to read the comments as I have sworn off FB since January and I am pretty happy about that - I did go on to DM the councillor and ask if she would come in to speak about this and the series of other issues she has with some of council’s dealings as

So, because if you go on cbc.ca now to read the story, some of the errors have been edited, but here’s a few: • Mayor Jim Jordan and Coun. Reg Fraeke...seriously? Nothing is more important than proper spelling of people’s names - 0-2 there. The only council name spelled correctly in the story was Charrois’. • Liz Benneian, identified as a director of the civic engagement group A Better Niagara, had a few comments including, “We won’t have any farmland left,” she said. Clearly the reporter did not speak to anyone other than whoever was spoon-feeding a significant crock because one parcel in question has been fallow for decades and the other has been a hall and parkland, so no farm loss of any kind. • Then it mentions the GEDAC roundtable on planning and development. After the crystal clear explanation by Grimsby’s director of planning at the last council meeting, it should have been clear this was not a lobbying session and Greenbelt may have played a very minor role. As one councillor noted, it was a mountain being made out of a molehill then, and now, the same idiocy has been portrayed on a regional scale - not just for the gluttons for punishment who watch the Grimsby council meetings. Again, as at council, there was no mention one of the two parcels was never supposed to be in the Greenbelt. I could go on but, damn, that story was almost as brutal as the whole unfortunate circumstance Grimsby and its council finds itself in.
