Region suffers communication breakdown By Mike Williscraft NewsNow At a time when all government officials know communications efforts must be maximized, Niagara Region continues to suffer a major disconnect between elected officials and the Department of Health. This became apparent during a lengthy debate at a special meeting of regional council on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The meeting was called to review acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji’s implementation of heightened CO-
VID-19 restrictions for the restaurant and bar sector under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Uniformly, the accommodation and food service industries rose up, led by Mark Wood of 40 Public House in Grimsby, to voice its serious concern that the measures, while wellmeaning, were off-base and potentially lethal to some of the 33,000 jobs in the industry. GBF expands with new wellness centre By Tristan Marks NewsNow Wellness services are on their way to Grimsby. The Grimsby Benevolent Fund (GBF) unveiled its new ‘Wellness Hub’ located in the old Woolverton Church Building on 19 Elm St. with a press release event on Monday. The new site will allow GBF to expand its services by piloting a number of ‘wellness initiatives’. This location will act as an “incubator” over the next three to four years to trial community-focused wellness promotion ideas.
GBF president Irene Podolak explained that the Wellness Hub will be a sort of “lab” for her organization and its community partners to test out ideas for wellness programs. “These are ideas we’ve had, but never had the space to test out,” she explained. Themes for ideas the Wellness Hub will explore include: • Six steps to Common Sense Spending; • Home Comfort; • Community Connections; • Youth Engagement; • Healthy Eating for Wellness;
• Fit for Life; • Healthy Minds, and; • Brain Food. Podolak said a “wellness board of volunteers and community liaisons will decide what programs to test out at the hub. Additionally, this year’s Christmas Hamper sorting will take place at the new site. Wellness will be a “major theme” for GBF over the next few years, explained Podolak. Indeed, GBF announced that its new vision moving to 2021 and beyond will be: “To enable our clients and our community
to be well.” “Wellness to us is not only physical wellness, but mental, social and environmental wellness as well,” Podolak said. None of this would be possible without cooperation and partnership with the Elm St. property’s owner, Harley Valentine. Valentine first came into contact with GBF on Oct. 6 of this year, and worked with the organization to renovate and convert the old church building into the Wellness Centre in just 48 days. It was later sold to the Pentecostals in 1967. Since the late 1980s it has served a more secular purpose as a banquet hall and later the Different Strokes billiard hall.

While Hirji does have the ability to unilaterally make a decision on implementing a Section 22 order - which requires extensive personal information for each person entering an establishment, no more than four at any table and all must be from the same household with an exception for a care provider - but being left in the dark did not sit well with councillors. Pat Chiocchio, who sits as co-chair of the health committee, said the committee met the day before Hirji implemented the measures, yet there was no mention of the possibilty at his committee meeting. “I had no idea until the announcement was

This was echoed by Port Colborne Reg. Coun. Barb Butters. Butters read a letter from a resident citing a host of issues present in big box stores, asking Hirji why such retailers are left with little restrictions, while restaurants face stringent measures. Hirji said such stores have “no close social in-

Plans come together for ‘reverse’ parade The 2020 Grimsby Santa Claus Parade won’t come to the people. The people will go to it. A “reverse” parade has been in the works for weeks with eight locations expected to be part of the event, dubbed the Holiday of Hope”. The displays will be set up from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 throughout town. A highlight will be the Santa Claus set up on Main Street, near the “Downtown Grimsby” arch. “It has take a while to come together but the community has been very helpful. Everyone wants to see something happen,” said Trevor Ruzylo, recreation supervisor with
Town of Grimsby, who is helping coordinate the event. Food drive tradition continues A lot of events have been shelved for 2020 but Grimsby’s Santa Claus Parade and firefighers food drive won’t be on that list. Saturday, Dec. 5, the traditional day for these activities will again see them take place in town - just in a very different way. “We are thrilled to be continuing in our relationship with Grimsby firefighters,” said Stacy Elia, Grimsby Benevolent Fund’s executive director. Grimsby Firefighters Association members will start the day at the Peach King Centre to accept nonperishable food donations from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. At the end of that run, their presence will shift to Main Street’s north side which will be closed to traffic starting at 3 p.m. in prepara-
tion for one of eight total stops for the “drive by” parade, which will run from 5-9 p.m. The firefighters and a Santa “float” will be set up on the north side allowing traffic to flow by in the west bound lane. With cars flowing by slowly, firefighters will accept food and monetary donations handed out of vehicles. One thing which will be decidedly different this year will be the cancellation of the sorting process normally held at Trinity United Church. Elia noted there was simply not enough space to conduct the process and provide suitable social distancing measures. The new GBF Hub at 19 Elm St. - the former Different Strokes location - will be the site for the sorting process,
done by GBF volunteers. The need has never been greater. In 2019, 250 families received hampers. This year, that number could top 300. “Christmas hampers alleviate some of the emotional stress and extra expense that many families and individuals experience during the holiday season,” Elia said. Items needed include: fruit juice, cereal, tea/coffee, pet food, hygenic products, laundry soap, tissue and canned meats. “Gift certificates in $25 increments would also be great. If $10 is all someone can do, that is greatly appreciated, too. GBF will top those donations up.” Look for food drive bags with this edition of NewsNow.

Patricia Bradshaw (nee Moyer), 54, of Smithville, passed away suddenly at home on the evening of November 18, 2020. She was born on January 7, 1966, in Hamilton to Millicent (Irene) and James (Jim) Moyer. Patricia married the love of her life, Gordon, on October 12, 1985, and had two children, Sarah and Kyle. For over 20 years, Patricia had a long-standing battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She will be most remembered for her bubbly personality and unwavering positive outlook. Predeceased by her father, James Moyer. Survived by her mother, Millicent, husband Gordon, two children Sarah (Jessica & Raelynn) and Kyle, and sister Francine. The family would like to express their gratitude to the numerous PSWs from Care Partners and in-home service providers who cared for Patricia. There will be no funeral services at this time, but the family hopes to host a celebration of life in 2021. Section 22 “dis”order Absolutely nobody has all the right answers when it comes to COVID-19 and the battle to mitigate the damage it is doing. Let’s get that straight. It is very easy for armchair quarterbacks and lobbyists for various labour sectors to launch a volley of attacks at the federal, provincial or even regional government crying foul or claiming some measure taken is unfair or out of step with reality. Government officials are trying. Nobody wants anyone to be at risk or to die, so everyone needs to get over themselves when claiming someone is downright horrible when something seems to be going amiss. That noted, the Section 22 order put in place - unbeknownst to regional council - by Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji, is just wrong. The target is 20-somethings who are not adhering to COVID guidelines, so why damage an entire business sector in an attempt to hit that target? All that for 15 positives from people who also went to clubs and/or house parties the same night? Makes no sense. M.W.
Grandma’s lesson lives on Everybody is so kabobbled these days. Up is down. Left is right capricious at best. There are precious few people who will miss 2020 when the world sees it in its collective rear view mirror. So let’s look for some grounding. Raise your hand if you have ever had your mouth washed out with soap? Yes? No? The memory is blocked from your brain? I have, twice. Both courtesy of my grandmother. It has been years since I have written anything about my grandmother, who passed away at the overripe age of 104, still living in the London, Ont. home she was born in. She definitely went out the way she wanted to. The topic of “how things used to be” came up in our house last week. I explained to my stepdaughter, Angie, when we were initially talking about social media after I saw The Social Dilemma on Netflix. That is one expenditure of time in which every single person should invest. The vast majority won’t bat an eye at the utter devastation social media is creating with now multiple generations of young people, but at least they will have some level of understanding why things that are happening are happening. Clearly, nothing is as it was when it comes to communication. Kids don’t run over to their friend’s house to see if they want to go outside and play. They either text themselves or have their parents text and that is assuming those

So, before we go down the hell hole of social media - yes, I would have gotten my mouth washed out with soap for saying “hell” let’s get back to grandma. My grandmother marched me off to the washroom on two occasions. Honestly, I do not remember why for one of them. The other, she had asked me to do something I didn’t particularly want to do and responded with a, “Geez”. That was it, off we went. She gave her victim an option to do it on their own, or she would do it. You really didn’t want grandma to do it...or so I heard from my big brother. Doing it yourself meant rubbing the bar of soap against your teeth to ensure you have that lovely, fresh Ivory flavour for hours to come. The capper, you had to bite into it as well. If the resulting prints were not sufficient in depth, bite again until you get it right. The contrast between my grandparents was huge. My dad’s parents, very straight-laced, never swore, church-going folk.
My mom’s parents, hardliving, hard-drinking, lots of swearing folk - both sets equally full of love. My grandmother always said you should never have to resort to swearing. There were always other words better suited to different situations, or, she noted as a last resort, pick an alternative word. For her, she used “dash” instead of damn....and I only heard her use that word once or twice in my life. The first time was when one of my grandfather’s hunting dogs got out of its pen and shredded her backyard gardens. One other time was when I got canned by Metroland in 2004, so you’re talking 40 years apart. I don’t know soap is even in play for parents any more. These days, when nobody wants to keep score at a sporting event so kids don’t feel like they lost anything, people may think washing a kid’s mouth out with soap to be a bad thing. For me, I told my kids, talk any way you like when you’re not around me, but I don’t want to hear them cursing a blue streak - with the warning that if they do swear around their friends they will fall into that habit and they may slip up...and that is something they did not want to do.
