GEDAC development roundtable draws councillors’ concern

The meeting brought together property managers, developers, and those involved in building-related industry as well as Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and Niagara Region representatives,” said GEDAC chair, Coun. Reg Freake.

Coun. Veronica Charrois wanted more detail on the guest list and was concerned provincial government staff or representatives were on hand. She asked why the public was not invited and why no minutes were on council’s agenda. “I’m a little disappointed, and the fact it is not even in the minutes, for something that came seven days later, this should have been recorded,” said Charrois. Mayor Jeff Jordan clarified, “It was not a council meeting. It was an event.” “It was a well-run event and something, I talked

to several people there, both staff and developers, who were happy that GEDAC was putting forward an event such as this; something that we could get communication in the community in a luncheon setting that added a lot to the way we can make things move smoother by having those lines of communication open. Post pandemic, this is something that was sorely needed.” Charrois continued with her concern that representatives from Greenbelt properties were pushing their agenda at the invite-only session. Don Howe, who atteded the GEDAC session, having a development only crowd allowed for open discussion focused on improving planning processes. “They (attendees) didn’t want to put up with political nonsense. They were there to talk business and to share business,” said Howe. “The discussion was for us to try to understand what their requirements are, from us, and for us to share what our requirements are to them, from a very wide range. It is not to keep any-

one out of the loop. It is just to recognize the importance of a certain group of people in town.” Coun. Nick DiFlavio sided with Charrois initially suggesting discussing development with stakeholders in an invite-only setting was wrong, but later noting, “I think it was completely on the up and up.” The concerns were shut down after comments made by Harold Madi, Grimsby’s director of planning. Madi told council why the discussion was set and its intention. “This came about because rumblings and perceptions about process that was somewhat slow. There needed to be a re-establishment of communication with the broader developer and business community. It wasn’t just developers that were there. It was a significant number of professions and businesses involved in city building – as well as some retailers,” said Madi. “There was a cross-section of people there who represented the business community.”

GBF/Firefighter food drive set to support largest need ever By Mike Williscraft For NewsNow The season of warmth and giving is music to the ears of Grimsby Benevolent Fund officials and members of the Grimsby Firefighters Association ready for this year’s annual food drive. The need this year is staggering. “Our budget for this year’s Christmas Hamper Program alone is $75,000,” said GBF executive director Stacy Elia. “We’re expecting 300plus families to be registered. As the holiday season approaches and people realize they cannot make ends meet, we get a lot of people reaching out at the last minute.” While requests for help are always welcome, Elia said the sooner someone can connect with GBF the better. “Now is the time to get in touch. It helps us know what the needs are so the sooner people ask, the better,” she said, adding the weekly demand on GBF is 30 per cent higher than in 2022. For decades, Grimsby firefighters have walked the route of Grimsby’s Santa Claus Parade gathering nonperishable food items, toiletries and cash donations. This year will be the same,

We top up the hampers, so it all helps.” The cut-off for donations is Monday, Dec. 4, so all the incoming items can go to the sorting process and hampers can be built up. While this program is developed to fill Christmas needs, the demand is growing year-round. Elia said this year GBF will give out more than $400,000 in one-time emergency support, noting high rents have led to a rise in evictions. Marr added the food bank will see in excess of 10,000 visits this year. “That is a lot for a community the size of Grimsby. People here cannot imagine it happening,” she said.

Beamsville service remembers veterans’ sacrifice

Time stood still for a moment Saturday as the Lincoln community gathered in safety and peace to remember the courage, suffering and loss of those who died in service to Canada. The Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch 612 led the service at the Beamsville cenotaph, joined by the 62 Phantom Air Cadet Squadron, the 1626 West Niagara Army Cadets, Niagara Regional Police Service and Niagara West Fire & Emergency. The service was led by Rev. Canon Ian Chadwick. “There is always much hope and prayer for an end to all conflicts, as we are well aware of the effects of war on all members of society,” Mayor Sandra Easton told the crowd.

Hundreds gathered remembering the courage, suffering and loss of those who served.

THE REASON for the proposed designation is to recognize the architectural and associative value of the building in context of its contribution to the heritage character of the Town of Grimsby.

25 Kerman Avenue is representative of the Queen Anne architectural style. The structure has direct associations with the Kerman, Smith, and Powell families. In 1892 William Kerman built the Queen Anne style dwelling at 25 Kerman Avenue. The notable wooden frame building contains a significant amount of original material, and was known for its expansive gardens, often being referred to as “Melrose Gardens”.

The structure at 127 Main Street West was constructed in the Loyalist Georgian Style around the year 1800. The former commercial structure served as the first merchant shop and the first post office located within the “The Forty”. The building is an integral part of Grimsby’s early development, and is located along the historic Main Street West corridor, a former Indigenous travel route.127 Main Street West was constructed by the notable Nelles family, later being owned by the Fitch family.

Notice of Public Information Centre #1 Schedule “B” Municipal Class Environmental Assessment

King Street (Regional Road 81) Rehabilitation between Nineteenth and Twenty-Third Street, Town of Lincoln

The Study Niagara Region has started a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study (the Study) to evaluate alternatives for improvements to King Street (Regional Road 81) in Lincoln to allow for active transportation, improve traffic safety, and develop options for the failing retaining wall along the corridor. The project will extend from Nineteenth Street to Twenty Third Street in Lincoln. The length is approximately two kilometers and extends between the communities of Jordan and Vineland. The site location and approximate Study Area are shown on the study area map. The Process Niagara Region is conducting this as a Schedule B project according to the planning and design processes as outlined in the 2023 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (the Process) which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The study will meet the Phase 1 to 4 requirements of the Process. The Process includes: • Consultation with agencies, stakeholders, Indigenous communities and public • An evaluation of alternative solutions to address the problem • An assessment of potential environmental impacts; and • Identification of reasonable measures to mitigate any potential adverse impacts When the study concludes, a Project File Report will be prepared for public review. One year down, three to go It is unfortunate Grimsby residents need to turn their attention to the calendar again and start counting down to the 2026 municipal election, but that time is nearing rapidly. The last council was brutal, painful to watch. While this current council is more entertaining, it is for all the wrong reasons. Better, yes, in some ways, but worse in several others. The problem is, it is not getting any better. There have been hints along the way, a meeting or two with positive comment, well-reasoned forethought and the community’s best interests at the fore. But then you get nonsensical, personal-agenda gibberish that simply crushes the soul of those who want to see council get up off the carpet where it got laid out in the last term, struggle to its feet, and start to move the Town forward. In this space in over the last year, several examples of red herrings and complete waste-of-time topics have consistently reared their respective ugly heads. While there has been lots of slogging as these last two councils go about their work, there is a key difference. The last bunch, you knew what they were about. There were no punches pulled and just this side of nothing got done without blinding pain. With the current council, there are flashes of cooperation, but this group has seemingly major issues conjured out of thin air,

MIKE WILLISCRAFT repeatedly. You don’t see the haymakers coming...and for some reason, they keep coming. The Nov. 6 council meeting was a microcosm of all the rigmarole this group goes through. There just seems to be little to no reason behind how some of their agenda items are dealt with and what merits their time. The best thing they did at the meeting was relatively quickly deal with yet another request to include an indoor town pool in planning documents. This has come up several times in my near-30-year run in town. All thought that was settled - to a large extent - when the YMCA came along. The Town chipped in a couple of million but got ZERO in goodwill coming back, no reduced membership fees, nothing. Now people, basically, want a town run (see “free”) pool, so access is affordable. However, running indoor pools is not economical and given other major priorities, it is down the wish list. Park it and get

on with things, which was exactly what was done at that meeting. That’s a good item. In the same meeting, council went around in circles on this Grimsby Economic Development Advisory Committee lunch hosted for those in the development sector. Simply, as the Town’s director of planning noted, the inviteonly discussion was to build a two-way information bridge in a key sector of the town’s economy. There were lots of silly things to that 25-minute discussion, but where anyone who watched that meeting had to get off the bus was when comments were made that suggested development is not an economic development matter, rather it is a planning matter, therefore GEDAC should not have been dealing with the topic and the director of planning should, somehow, not be involved. I’m here to to tell you, good reader, development is THE single biggest driver of each municipal economy in Niagara West. Period. Millions upon millions of dollars in commercial and residential development are paying for many of the Town projects residents see being built or enjoy the benefit from on a daily basis - this both through added tax base and development charges. Until councillors can get over themselves and their personal agendas, Grimsby will simply not be able to move forward.
