event Nov. 27-29 – is not lost on Grimsby officials scurrying about trying to get as much organized as possible to promote and highlight the community. The RHH entourage will roll into town with a whole series
of programming, displays and interactive matter all to be located on the grounds of the Peach King Centre. Included will be a couple of giant screens on which to take in the Canadiens-Canucks tilt on evening of Monday, Nov. 29.

The Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area board is hoping to connect visitors to the core over that weekend and preceding the event with a DIA Puck Passport program. - which will include a set of four Toronto Maple

We get it. All financial institutions are challenged to find that balance between having empathy for the financially-distressed homeowner while maintaining their corporate responsibilities. These companies provide unique short-term solutions that enable a financially distressed homeowner to “get in front of the debt”. An imminent credit crisis is avoided, and the homeowner has bought themselves time to formulate a longer-term plan, which might include selling the home, taking in a boarder, or finding employment. Lincoln asks for help in saving ship’s masts

The Canadian Coast Guard has been asked to save the three masts of La Grande Hermine ship currently residing in Jordan Harbour after Lincoln council made the request Monday night. Through an approved motion, council recognized the landmark as a tourist attraction in Lincoln and requested the CCG redirect the money currently slated for removing the masts towards making the masts and ship safe for future visitors to visually enjoy. The Town will not be seeking to own the ship but does call on the federal government to support this tourism landmark. “Lincoln is a vibrant community that is becoming a top tourist
destination. La Grande Hermine draws many visitors who support our local tourism economy, spending additional time visiting our other attractions in Lincoln,” said Town of Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. “While we certainly share the Coast Guard’s safety concerns about the ship, we encourage them to redirect the funds currently slated for removing the masts into saving them for future visitors to visually

Niagara West. It heavily relies on the generosity and support of like-minded individuals. The event was Niagara’s march to end gender-based violence. It drew the support of 175 walkers, 28 teams, 26 sponsors and over 800 donations. The need for Walk a Mile has never been greater. After a year and a half of coping with and navigating through the COVID 19 pandemic, Gillian’s Place is responding to a surge in demand for service. The 34-bed emergency shelter is currently operating above its capacity, community outreach services are experiencing pressures like never before, and the calls/texts to the 24/7 support line are seemingly ever-increasing. A number of its priority programs beyond safe emergency shelter would not exist without community support. For the second virtual event, Niagara stepped up in a big way to support individuals experiencing gendered abuse.

Tale of heroic exploits by family member not unique to columnist Most Canadian families have a World War II hero in their background. I am proud to have one, too. He was my cousin, Avro Frederick John Hannaford who, as a young architectural student, joined the Royal Engineers in London, England. He enjoyed the training, and eagerly checked the postings at the end of the course. He saw his friends posted to design air fields and other military installations, while under his name were the words “bomb disposal.” I can tell you, his heart sank. John survived many hazardous adventures as a bomb disposal technician, and later as a captain with a team of 35 men. One of his worst experiences was when a senior officer was instructing them on a
A Small Drop of Ink By Dorothy Turcotte new type of grenade. The men had taken cover behind earth barriers, and the officer threw the grenade. Instead of exploding as expected, it rolled. John knew it was unwise to approach the grenade, but the instructor outranked him. Together they went toward it, and the instructor picked it up, then tapped it. Appalled, John turned away and managed a couple of steps before the grenade exploded, killing the instructor and taking a chunk out of the back of John’s head. On another occasion, at a shift change he had just climbed out of a big pit with a huge bomb at the bottom. As he reached his car the whole thing exploded.

John’s first experience with a bomb was in 1917 when being pushed in his pram along the Thames embankment. A German bomb was dropped near the Cleopatra’s Needle, and John and his Mum narrowly escaped the explosion. Shortly before he died in 2015, John was one of only two of the original teams still alive. They were honoured at a ceremony in St. Paul’s Cathedral. Note: Yes, he was named for an airplane. His father was in the Royal Flying Corps in World War I and flew an Avro. This is my Remembrance Day tribute to him, a real hero of his time.

November branch collection ongoing Fall branch collection in Niagara West got underway last week and continues until Nov. 26. Curbside branch collection is available across Niagara Region to all residents living in single-family homes and apartments with six units or less. When setting out branches for collection, it is important to remember: • Branches must be tied in bundles using string or twine; Maximum weight of a bundle = 22.7 kg (50 lbs.); • Maximum size of a bundle = 1.5 m (5 ft.) in length and 0.5 m (1.6 ft.) in diameter; • Individual branches inside of a bundle must not exceed 7 cm (2.8 in.) in diameter; • Branches must be at the curb by
7 a.m. on your regular collection day, or placed out the night before after 5 p.m.; • Stumps, large branches / limbs and tree trunks are not collected at the curb, and; • During the weeks of fall branch collection, branches and leaf and yard material are often collected in a separate collection truck than Green Bin material. In addition to curbside collection, residents can also drop off branches (of any size) and yard waste at the Regional landfill at 7015 Concession 7 Rd., West Lincoln. RIDE nets zero fines, suspensions RIDE spotchecks in Lincoln and Niagara Falls last Saturday resulted in no fines or suspensions. Throughout the night, officers stopped about 350 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed
any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 30 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. All drivers who provided a breath sample received results that were within an accept-
able range. The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.

Adorned for remembrance
Lincoln Museum has been adorned with 2,000 knitted and crocheted poppies that have been hand-made by volunteers from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Denmark. Poppies symbolize remembrance, the sacrifice of veterans, and hope for a peaceful future. Lincoln received the poppies, which will be in place until Nov. 11, from Niagara Falls. They will now be displayed annually for two weeks prior to Remembrance Day.
Never in doubt...was it? Should he stay? No. Will he stay? Absolutely. Nobody could ever have had any doubt Grimsby Coun. Randy Vaine would keep cashing the council stipend cheques until the bitter end of the current term - even after he relocated his family home to a community well over an hour away. Although no documentation has been made public and Vaine is asking to keep his new address confidential due to - apparently - safety concerns, clerk Sarah Kim says Vaine’s lawyer has provided documentation showing consecutive residency from the date his home was sold, this via a rental agreement of some sort. By the Municipal Act, that is now a non-issue. Common sense would dictate otherwise, but when has the G5 operated with any of that? M.W.
Get back to where you once belonged Last week I blathered on about some of the good things going on in Grimsby, so this week I want to expand on that to give Lincoln and West Lincoln some ink. I was very happy to see a notice come in from the little church that could Elcho Road United Church - in West Lincoln. Next Saturday, Nov. 20, they host their 16th annual bazaar from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. I advise getting there closer to 9 as they usually sell out of the baked goods. Now, lots of churches have these bazaars and fundraisers and I really don’t know why Elcho is my fave, but I have made a point to get out every year to get a photo, I think, because it reminds me of the little church I went to when I was a kid. Good friends, good fellowship...it gives one a nice warm feeling just walking in the door. I wish them another tremendously successful event. Plans have also come together for West Lincoln’s Santa Claus Parade, which will be the drive-thru variety, for 2021 held at the West Niagara fairgrounds at Mud Street and Reg. Rd. 12 . That event will start at 5 p.m., so a warm way to take in a festive sight. As well, West Lincoln’s official kick-off to the holiday season will be its tree lighting program. That’s Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the West Lincoln Community Centre. Another chance to just get out of the house and be social...boy, do we need those events! Not to be outdone, Lincoln will host its tree lighting event at the Fleming Centre on Saturday, Nov.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT 27. This is a drive-thru style event where letters to Santa can be dropped and kids can get a takehome craft kit. As well LIncoln Fire Department will collect non-perishable food items and toys for those who need a little help this Christmas season. You can call 905-5632799, ext. 319 to pre-register for this event, which runs from 5:30-8 p.m. Jordan will also have an event next Friday, Nov. 19 with its Christmas in the Village. They are doing a very different style program - complete with a Starlight Market, which will include a wide variety of vendors, from artisans to tasty treats. That event - the market aspect runs from 3-8 p.m. - has the tree lighting set for 6 p.m. So all these activities have a common theme, to me, which is just get the heck out of the house, get a hot chocolate or a coffee and say “hi” to someone. It seems people have become so introverted by COVID protocols and while things are a bit more relaxed some are now paralyzed by fear. Don’t underestimate that, good reader. You may not feel it. You may think nobody
in your circle of friends or family is feeling it, but I bet someone you know IS feeling it, but perhaps does not want to say. It is very hard with all forms of media pommelling people week after week, day after day to keep an optimistic outlook. Especially when you have those clowns who think it would somehow push them to forefront by being the first to declare society is slipping back into the grips of another COVID surge. How many times have we not even gotten into a remotely positive state before the doom sayers start with, “here we go again”. Now, I fully understand there are ebbs and flows to it, but there has been a lot of nonsense. You have extremists on both ends – those who want no masks, no vaccines, no restrictions matched up vs those who want everyone to be locked up in their basements until 2025. We need to be careful as organizers of all these events are doing. We can have a proper mix of moving society ahead, getting back to a “new normal” and allowing people to mix and be social - not to say anything about allowing businesses to operate as required to earn a living. This was not intended to get into COVID policy. That is a deep, dark rabbit hole. Get out. Get back to where you once belonged (apologies to my good friend Sir Paul McCartney), which is having some fun and talking to friends and family in your community. Have a great, safe time at all the awesome public events being staged over the next six weeks!
Grimsby Historical rolls out 2022 calendar While the Grimsby Historical Society is busy preparing a number of community initiatives to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Grimsby becoming a incorporated Town – they knew they had to start with a special 2022 Calendar! Volunteers have been busy researching and locating vintage photographs from 1922 and now the 2022 calendar is available to purchase for $10. The calendar is full of photographs and stories specifically relating to 1922 – the year Grimsby reached the milestone population of 2,000, enabling village officials to apply for Town status. The first town election was held on Jan. 2, 1922 and Charles T. Farrell was elected mayor. The calendar includes photographs illustrating life in Grimsby during 1922. Did you know that was the year the Grimsby Arena opened? It was the first artificial ice rink outside of the big cities and was known to hockey players and skating enthusiasts from all over Ontario as one of the finest indoor ice rinks in existence. Other photographs include the Deer Park Golf Course which

Did you know Main Street was paved for the first time in 1922? The calendar includes a photo of Main Street before it was paved. It was the spring of 1922 when the AutoRoad Construction Company was granted the contract to pave the road from Maple to Kerman. It was a frustrating time for some drivers as east-bound traffic was rerouted up the mountain and along Ridge Road while the paving process was underway.
The calendar also includes some facts about Grimsby from 1922. For instance, did you know there were 500 telephones in Grimsby at that time or an electric washing machine cost $85 while a washboard was only 59 cents, or that a 24-lb bag of flour cost $1? The 2022 calendar, which is a key fundraiser for the GHS Archives, can be purchased online at: grimsbyhistoricalsociety.com in-person at the Archives during open hours (call ahead to make an appointment 905-309-0796), Grimsby Museum and the Art Gallery Shop located in the lobby of the Grimsby Public Library.
