Grimsby open - and ready - for business What started out as a simple goodwill gesture blossomed into a very positive business promotion last week as protective face shields were distributed to downtown businesses. The shields were manufactured by Wood Workers United - a group of five custom woodworking businesses which banded together, retooled their operation and started making face shields
as their regular business slowed to a crawl. Grimsby resident Drew Gall, who owns one of the businesses based in Mississauga, delivered 800 shields to town last Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning, he returned to the core with videographer Tony Hall to start delivering shields to businesses downtown along with Mayor Jeff Jordan
and Grimsby DIA president Mike Williscraft. The response was instant and positive. “These are great,” said Kim Johnston of Kim’s Family Hair. “They are super easy to put on and easily adjustable, so that’s great.” With the sponsorship in place, each business in Grimsby can receive two shields at no cost. If
more than two are needed, additional shields can be purchased at a cost of $6 each. Anyone interested can email their business’s details to: mike@wn3.ca “We started a spreadsheet right away to track anyone who calls or emails for additional face shields. Notice of Completion Schedule ‘C’ - Municipal Class Environmental Assessment for:
Livingston Avenue Extension (RR512) West of Emily Street to Main Street (RR81) The Regional Municipality of Niagara (Niagara Region) has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA), to address the need for additional east-west transportation system capacity in the west portion of the Town of Grimsby, Ontario. The Study Area is shown on the map below. The key objectives of the EA were to address the long term east-west transportation needs for the Study Area to the year 2041 and address future congestion on the South Service Road east of Industrial Drive. The new GO Transit Station and overall growth between today and 2041 will result in a need to provide one additional travel lane in each direction (east and west) between Main Street West/Oakes Road North and Casablanca Boulevard. The alternatives considered include measures that would broaden the range of travel modes in the Study Area with a goal of reducing the overall demands on the transportation network, shift demands to non-peak times, and encourage the use of other modes of travel such as transit, bicycling and walking, improvements to Main Street West, improvements to the South Service Road, the extension of Livingston Avenue to Main Street West/Oakes Road North, and intersection improvements. To address the identified transportation capacity needs in the west portion of the Town of Grimsby the Region is proposing a phased approach, as follows: • Short Term (by approximately 2021): A combination of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) measures and implementation of roadway operational improvements and additional roadway lanes along the South Service Road, as per the Casablanca Boulevard and GO Station Access EA (March 2018). • Longer Term (by approximately 2031): A combination of TDM measures and the extension of Livingston Avenue west to Oakes Road North once the community/traffic growth requires the additional roadway capacity. Documentation of the development and review of alternatives, the rationale for selecting the preferred alternative, the consultation process undertaken, and measures to minimize potential impacts is provided in the Environmental Study Report (ESR, May 2020), which is available on the Region’s website at: https://www.niagararegion.ca/ projects/livingston-ea/default.aspx. A hardcopy of the ESR will be made available to individuals that cannot access the Region’s website following a request by phone, email or mail to one of the contacts provided below. The ESR is being placed in the public record for a 45-day review period. Interested persons may provide written comments within 45 calendar days from the date of this Notice of May 21, 2020, with the comment period ending on July 6, 2020. If concerns regarding this project cannot be resolved in discussion with the Region, a person or party may request that the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks
make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act (referred to as a Part II Order). A Part II Order Request Form must be received by the Minister (Ferguson Block, 77 Wellesley Street West, 11th Floor, Toronto, Ontario M7A 2T5) by July 6, 2020. Lincoln’s shoplincoln.ca supports businesses With more than 100 listings at its launch, shoplincoln.ca is ready to roll. The new website - coordinated by the Town of Lincoln - will act as an online directory to help consumers find what they need. “It is a response to COVID-19 for small- and mediumsized businesses which have been adversely affected in the last two months,” said Paul Di Ianni, Lincoln economic development officer. The site combines efforts from several entities,
including Twenty Valley Tourism Association, Ontario Craft Wineries, and the Beamsville Business Improvement Area. The site divides businesses listed into various categories to make the search process easier. All listings are free to Lincoln businesses. “A user can search for wineries or restaurants, for example,” said Di Ianni. The shoplincoln.ca site is not an e-commerce site, rather it is more like a refer-
ral, he added. “You can learn a little bit and then it forwards the person to the business’s website.” Di Ianni noted any business wanting to participate would have to have its own site to act as a landing page. “We are building our contact portion of the website, so there will be a form for people to fill out but people can call me any time for more information,” said Di Ianni. West Lincoln eased restrictions on other amenties, including tennis courts and boat launches. Lincoln has allowed for the reopening of the same amenities, but has also included municipal dog parks. The town also announced that private campgrounds and parks can open to prepare for the summer season. Access to rental camping services at a private campground or park is permissible in Lincoln if the trailer or RV hooks up to electric and water services and the rental period is for the full season. Those with seasonal leases can access and stay at their sites. However, this does not apply to people paying to stay for just one night or weekend. Grimsby has not yet reopened its municipal dog parks and tennis courts, but according to a statement from the town an announcement regarding these amenities “will be forthcoming”.

The municipalities cited the Provincial Government’s decision to reopen certain outdoor amenities such as golf courses and marinas as justification for easing their own emergency policies. West Lincoln Mayor Dave Bylsma said in a statement that he was pleased to see restrictive measures worked. “With the nicer weather coming, it’ll be a welcome relief,” said Bylsma. “I’m so glad our diligence and cooperation are paying off.”

West Niagara Fair cancelled Due to COVID-19 uncertainty, this Fall’s West Niagara Fair has been cancelled. “With heavy hearts, the West Niagara Agricultural Society announces today that due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, we have cancelled the annual West Niagara Fair scheduled to take place September 11-13, 2020 at our Fairgrounds,” stated a press release issue by WNAS’s board of directors. “We understand and respect the restrictions placed on public
gatherings. To us what always comes first is the safety and well being of our community, our volunteers, our sponsors, our vendors and our exhibitors.” The release notes the fair will return September 10-12, 2021 “with an even stronger commitment to promoting all things agricultural.” “We hope you all remain safe and healthy in these unprecedented times.” the release states. Common symptoms of engine control module problems An engine control module (ECM) serves as the primary computer system for many critical components in modern vehicles. ECMs essentially serve as the brains behind the engines, controlling everything from fuel mixtures to emissions controls. Sensors within the engine send signals to the ECM, and the ECM then uses that information to run the car smoothly. Issues that arise with the ECM can make driving difficult and, in some cases, impossible. A faulty or failing ECM will exhibit various symptoms. However, it’s important to note that these symp-
toms are not always indicative of issues with the ECM, so when they arise drivers should schedule appointments with their mechanics so the true culprit can be identified and the problem fixed. • Check engine light comes on: Many drivers have experienced the dreaded check engine light, which indicates some type of issue with the engine. That issue can be a failing engine component, or it may indicate a failing or bad ECM. • Engine performance issues: Even though the ECM is a separate entity from the engine itself, a bad or failing ECM can

affect engine performance. That’s because such ECMs throw off the timing and fuel settings of the engine, leading to a sudden and noticeable reduction in engine performance. • Vehicle will not start: A failed ECM means the vehicle won’t start, as there’s nothing controlling the engine to tell it do so. Failing ECMs may lead to struggles starting the vehicle and possibly escalate to the point where the engine will not start at all. • Erratic engine behavior: A malfunctioning ECM can lead to stalling or misfiring. These issues are often sporadic,
which may give drivers the impression that nothing is seriously wrong. However, erratic engine behavior is a strong indicator of problems with the ECM, and these issues should be addressed immediately.

The top two entrants - Dave Thibault and Peter Kralt - have agreed to share the winner’s cash pay out. Each will receive $1,500. The third and fourth place finishers will each receive $150 in Giant Tiger Grimsby gift certificates, to split the $250 and $50 prizes combined. Thanks for playing. Hopefully Hat Trick will return in Fall 2020.

TEDI BARNABI
It is with heavy hearts the family wishes to announce the passing of their beloved husband, father, nonno, Tedi Barnabi, aka “Tediza”of Grimsby, on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Tedi was the loving husband of 50 years to his wife Tina. Tedi walked into Tina’s house when she was 12 years old, on February 16, 1963, and from that moment on true love prevailed and they were inseparable. Tedi was Tina’s hero, coming to Canada in 1981 with very little, building a life together and raising their family through hard work, perseverance and faith. Tedi was one in a million, and the best father anyone could ever have to Francesco and his wife Lynn, Davide and his wife Dayna, Victoria Short and her husband Christopher. Proud nonno who adored and was adored by his grandchildren Peyton and Maya Barnabi; Sidney and Matteo Barnabi; and Audrey and Kathryn Short. Tedi provided guidance and wisdom to all of his grandchildren, in all their stages of life. Tedi will be truly missed by his brother Tomislav Peric and his family, and all of his extended family in Italy and Croatia. Tedi had a unique gift of creating lasting impressions on everyone he encountered and will be dearly missed by many friends and his community. He was a “master surgeon of life”, able to do anything. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Grimsby, where he volunteered countless hours. Tedi was very passionate about soccer, motorcycles, and Formula 1 racing. At Tedi’s request, cremation has taken place and a formal service will occur when suitable. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation, or Grimsby Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church would be appreciated by the Barnabi family and may be made by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) who have been entrusted with Tedi’s arrangments. Another event pillar cancelled West Niagara Fair 2020 was shut down last week by the event’s board of directors. While it had to a very tough decision - made on the same day the Canadian National Exhibition was also cancelled - it was the right and only option the board had. The Fall date seems a long way off, but for the cost and time outlay, it is likely huge resources would have been wasted as crowds just won’t return as before that soon. M.W.
Face shields a small but important step It’s been a very tough go for many during this COVID-19 mess. Personal tragedies, mental anguish and a cryogenic business community only scratch the surface of ongoing conditions our community has experienced - as well as the world. A handful of “good news” stories has sprouted but it seems it is difficult for them to take route with the mudslide of negativity which surrounds so much of what we see and hear. So, for me, it was a downright treat to get out of the office last week and get some deliveries done with these new face shields which the Town of Grimsby and Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area (DIA) board acquired for businesses in town. Much of the background was covered in our front page story this week, so I will focus on the reaction and comments from some of the business folk we got to see while making deliveries. First, an appreciative shout out to Drew Gall and his team at Wood Workers Unite, who worked with us seamlessly to get this project off the ground from idea to delivered in less than a week. Second, Tony Hall, thanks for doing such a great job on that video https://youtu.be/05FvQugs5Xw of our rounds on Thursday. It certainly captured the positive atmosphere of the day. Needless to say, the face shields were a huge hit. While some business operators said they were not sure where to source that kind of thing, others said they had already purchased much more expensive versions but vastly preferred the ones we dropped off.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT The main reasons for that are design related. We heard about how easy they are to put on and that they are easily adjustable both for angle of the shield and the distance away from the face the shield can get. More importantly, it was simply the recognition of support which all business people felt. As someone who fits the bill of a downtown business operator myself, I can assure you all business folk feel like they have been cast on an island, no mode of transportation to get back to civilization and, for that matter, no other land in sight as a possible safe harbour from the effects of COVID-19. Several people noted, as I feel, that the shield is more friendly than cloth masks which cover one’s face. Now, some may need or want masks for their particular business and that’s great. Everything about this situation is “whatever works for you”...you being the business’s employees and customers. For me, though, the absolute #1 thing about the face shields is they are an instant, subliminal marker that our businesses are taking the situation seriously and we have the best interests of our customers
in mind as we re-open our doors and our downtown once again. It is of paramount importance to both workers and customers to feel comfortable, that preventative measures are in place and the seriousness of the situation is top of mind. Because of the sacrifices everyone has made - and it has been extreme for some - we all are generally in pretty good shape to get this rig rolling again and starting that process won’t come a day too soon. That said, nobody believes it will be just like turning a tap back on. It will be slow and, hopefully, progressive, but I am glad to see things starting to open up again this week. As I have stated in the past, I am clearly biased, but our local merchants need every bit of support the community can muster if they are to keep their lights on. ******* Alvin Danyluck passed away last week. I knew Alvin for more than 20 years through one of the passions of his life, the Beamsville Lions Club. He was also a former councillor at Town of Lincoln. Having seen Alvin in action at countless events over the years - and not just Lions events as he would help anyone who needed it - it was clear he had an intense civic pride. People with that kind of drive and passion for making their community a better place are not common these days and their numbers were just reduced by one. He was an old-style country gentleman. RIP, my friend.
