Smithville native earns four Special Olympics gold Ewen Barclay cleaned up at the Calgary games speed skating oval By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Basketball played a key role in Ewen Barclay’s path to a quadruple gold performance at the Special Olympics Winter Games in Calgary last week. “Ewen first got involved in track and field back in 2018, then soccer, then basketball and curling,” said Ewen’s mom, Diane.
“At her very first basketball game, I was looking around in the lobby and saw a poster for speed skating. I said, ‘You’d be good at that because you played hockey for 15 years.” With that, Ewen, 22, got involved with the Hamilton Speed Skating Club and she was on her way. “I didn’t know if I was See GOLD, Page 4

By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Grimsby council gave a green light to the detailed design phase of its Downtown Reimagined project Monday night. After the project approval was delayed at its Feb. 20 meeting in favour of getting more detail on proposed design elements, the same initially recommended ideas were approved unanimously. “The concept for it basically establishes a new cross-section for the road. In approving we
are agreeing to reduce the asphalt platform for the roadway with a focus on wider sidewalks, landscaping and furnishing zones, and we’re also acknowledging that we’ll be prioritizing various elements which we want to see within the cross-section. Things like trees, lighting, landscaping, furniture, active and inviting storefronts, public art, murals and so on,” said Brandon Wartman, Grimsby’s director of public works. See DOWNTOWN, Page 3
