Sobye Road sign honours community contributions By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow A street sign helps us figure out where we are, but for the Sobye family, it also commemorates where they’ve been. The Town of Grimsby agreed last fall to fix a long-time error

and correct the spelling of Sobie Rd. to Sobye Rd. And last week, family matriarch Mae Annable (Sobye) helped install the newly minted sign celebrating the family’s heritage and in honour of her parents Joe and

Stella Sobye and her brother Bill. Family, friends and neighbours met with local officials to pay tribute to the Sobye family and the significant contributions they made to their community. The sign is a powerful way to

preserve that history. The family’s legacy in Grimsby and the family farm at Sobye and Thirty Road go back to the 1925 purchase of 100 acres at that intersection. In 1939, the Milk Board of Ontario passed a law that

milk must be pasteurized. The Milk Board allotted certain territories to each dairy. Joe and Stella were given from Fly Rd. north to Lake Ontario, to the east side of Beamsville, to the west side of Grimsby Beach. Smithville was

later added to their territory. While the family sold milk from their farm, they formally moved into Sobye’s Dairy which included Mae, her parents Joe and Stella, and brother Bill, in 1958. See SOBYE, Page 11

Niagara Region has prepared a new proposed Niagara Official Plan, and will hold an open house and public meeting, pursuant to subsection 17.5 and 17.6 of the Planning Act R.S.O. 1990, as amended.

OPEN HOUSE Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 5:30 p.m.

It will be held virtually. The purpose of the open house is to present the new proposed Niagara Official Plan and give an opportunity to ask questions.

PUBLIC MEETING Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held virtually as part of a Special Regional Council Meeting. The purpose of the public meeting is to present the new proposed Niagara Official Plan and give an opportunity for the public to provide input.

PURPOSE OF THE NIAGARA OFFICIAL PLAN

The proposed Niagara Official Plan will shape the physical, economic and social development of the region over the next 30 years. It sets out objectives and policies that will, among other matters: • • • • •

Identify how and where growth will happen Help protect Niagara’s natural environment and address our changing climate Ensure Niagara has an adequate and diverse supply of housing Plan for our future infrastructure needs and ensure they’re properly funded Create the right conditions to attract and retain jobs in Niagara

As the proposed Niagara Official Plan will apply to the entire Niagara Region planning area, a location map has not been provided. Consultation has taken place on background work and draft policy. A final proposed Niagara Official Plan will be available for review and comment at niagararegion.ca/official-plan from the date of this notice.

Owner Marinus DeJonge said the new facility at the corner of Industrial Park Road and Spring Creek Road will shift part of their Stoney Creek location’s processes to West Lincoln. “This change will create some much-needed space for us,” said DeJonge. “This project has been in the works for several years, so we are very happy to see it get going.”

So, too, is West Lincoln Mayor Dave Bylsma, who noted how important industrial development can be to a community. “West Lincoln welcomes the Highland Packer family to our town. The economic growth from thriving businesses is vital to a balanced community,” said Bylsma. Manufactured on the site will be Highland “ready to eat” line of foods. The plant for Highland Packers, which was established in 1958, will take about one year to build.

a new owner. From the start, there have been a few guidelines for knitting these shawls. They are 47” long by 27” wide, and the patterns almost always include stitches that use multiples of three, in honour of the Holy Trinity. Cheerful and restful colours are all welcome. Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry work at their projects at home and Tuesday meetings. Representatives from the Prayer Shawl Ministry have made presentations to other Anglican parishes in the diocese to encourage them to incorporate similar programs into their parish activities. In 2011, Kit Dickenson, Norma Sudine and Deacon Jean RuttanYates took their Prayer Shawl Ministry to England where they visited churches in Lincolnshire, including those in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The 12 knitters in St. Andrew’s Prayer Shawl Ministry each find satisfaction in knowing that their work will provide a little joy to someone in need. I can remember how delighted my daughter was when, Inewly diagN CONCERT nosed with cancer, she was given a similar afghan by another group. Small actions really do help.

After a long and slow battle with Alzheimer’s on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby. Motoe is survived by her sister Sheena, daughters Eileen and Betty, three grandchildren Amanda, Rhys and William, and great grandaughter Tessa. Motoe was born on January 11th, 1928 in Vancouver, BC. During her working life she was a bookeeper but took great pride and care in looking after her family. She enjoyed sewing cooking and volunteering. She was always kind and loving. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren and their many accomplishments which she was very proud of. From her grandsons wedding and meeting her 1st and only great grandaughter. To her grandsons dream of going to Japan. She took great pride in her grandaughters participation in Special Olympics sports and Momentum Choir. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Alzheimer’s Society, Momentum Choir or a charity of your choice. Dear Mom, I love you mom, but I’m ashamed to say i didn’t always appreciate you. When I was young, I’m sure I took you for granted. Since then I’ve seen so many moms make mistakes that you’d never do. Many of those mistakes involve not teaching strength of character. Funny thing is, it just came easy to you-you have that strength of character. Then there was that time recently when I got really angry with you because I thought I “lost” you to pre-Alzheimer’s. Your meds won’t stop it, just make it go slower. Then a wise person suggested that I not only try to remember the good memories, but that I remember how I got be where I am today. In other words, I’m basically a good person. Growing up mom you were my champion, my greatest fan. You didn’t spoil me, but I really felt I was important to you. Mom, you made me who I am today and I really like me. Today, I’m teaching my daughter to do for others what you did for me. Doing for others and liking yourself-perhaps that’s the secret of life. Sunshine List illuminates...a little There was considerable head scratching this week when Ontario’s Sunshine List was released by the Province. The list, which includes all public employees who earn in excess of $100,000, reveals a lot - like long gone employees still getting paid out as part of settlements from terminations as well as those who are collecting from two municipalities. Grimsby’s CAO Harry Schlange fits in both those categories. He was terminated by Brampton and still collected pay there, while earning his wages in Grimsby, too. With nearly $218,000, including benefits, from Grimsby and more than $306,000 from Brampton, it’s likely he’ll be able to suffer through today’s rate of inflation. Slap was a symptom, not the illness I didn’t watch the Academy Awards, but I’ve seen 50 things about the Fresh Prince going full Philly on Chris Rock. It’s not like this is a local, Niagara West incident, but as countless takes on the weird event rolled through every aspect of social media repeatedly since it occurred, my recurring thought was, “how does anyone condone that?” Yes, Chris Rock’s joke was in poor taste, but it was actually a compliment more than a jab - and you can get into whether or not he knew of Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia condition - but taking a swing at the guy cannot and should not be tolerated. Period. The problem is, on all levels, society has shortened its wick on patience and understanding to the point where this kind of action is commonplace. Physical and verbal assault are a regular occurrence now. The other day I was asked what the Top 3 crazy antics of Grimsby’s Fab Five were? I rattled off three, then as we reviewed those occurrences, I thought of a halfdozen more which pushed all but one of the original three down the list. Since then, I’ve reviewed my council note back to early 2019. There are about two dozen ridiculous situations - and I am narrowing the field there due to rampant duplication - which I have never seen at any council or board in my 35-plus years of reporting. Like with Will Smith marching on stage and physically assaulting a man, then taking his front-row seat before returning to the stage moments later to ac-

Just as Smith should have been immediately ejected from the premises - this does not mean he should not have still won his award or that it should be taken away - by forfeiting his opportunity to accept it live, so, too, Grimsby councillors should have been ejected from meetings on many occasions. Why did neither happen? Acceptance. People now accept that this kind of behaviour is how society rolls now. There have been so many truly bizarre justifications for Smith’s actions it boggles one’s mind to think who someone arrives at their conclusions. My fave was, “don’t joke about a Black woman’s hair.” Now, don’t get me started on the minority stuff. There are true and real issues discrimination. This has zero to do with any of that. What could it possibly matter if Jada was Black, White or Orange? Would the point not be that Smith’s wife (a human, regardless of

colour or race) was hurt and stepped up to do a little business with Mr. Rock? I get that take. I don’t agree, but I get it. Smith’s whole emotional mea culpa on air didn’t even mention Rock. He was embarrassed. He realized he ruined his greatest moment, but there was not remorse of rocking Chris. Then, to tie his actions into the efforts of his character in King William, wow, what an insult to the whole Williams family. Similarly, every time we see and hear personal attacks and horrible conduct at the Grimsby council table it insults every taxpayer in the community - over and over again. So, now the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is reviewing the SmithRock incident, as it should. As stated, no, Smith’s award should not be taken away. He earned that. But I would bar him for life from attending future functions. He should still be eligible for this work, no problem, but I would not let him back in the building. With any level of thought he could have defended his family/wife in so many other ways. He could have just walked up and got in Rock’s face. That on its own would not have gotten enough attention. He could just have screamed his obscenities from his seat, as he did, which silenced the audience. Etc, etc, etc....lots of options, none taken. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, just as we will see how Grimsby council’s saga plays out in the Oct. 24 municipal elections. They are just 207 days remaining.
