The home of John & Joanne Holborne will be part of Grimsby Garden Club’s July 16 garden tour By Sarah Williscraft NewsNow John and Joanne Holborne first set eyes on their prop-

erty in 1979 when it was mostly mud, asphalt and the remains of a grist mill from the late 1700s.

As the Holborne’s were touring the property, working their way through dead trees and

shrubs at the back of the house, they pulled some branches aside and saw a beautiful view of the

rushing Forty Mile Creek. “I looked at the guy showing us the place

and I said ‘Hey, Buddy, if that goes with it, I’m buying it,” said John.

West Lincoln officials made it official with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new fire station in Caistor Centre. The new station will replace the current one, which is a repurposed public works facility used as a firehall for more than a quarter century. Chicken Little Redux: “Interest rates are rising!” The latest industry forecast last week was that the Bank of Canada will continue to raise its target overnight rate; This is causing much angst amongst variable-rate mortgage borrowers who have never experienced a rising-rate climate.

The current Prime rate is 3.70%. Pre-pandemic, the rate was 3.95%. Increases are totally expected, as this is the most efficient way for the Government to control inflation. Prime could eventually hit 5%. It is expected that the Bank of Canada will increase the overnight rate by another 0.75% in July, or August, until inflation cools.

Thursday @10 give final donations By Sarah Williscraft NewsNow After 44 years, Thursday @10 has dissolved with members opting to donate remaining funds to deserving organizations in Grimsby. For decades, the group hosted the weekly speaker series but the pandemic eliminated their ability to gather and plan. Now, Thursday @10 decided to make a donation to the FORT Youth Centre and McNally House Hospice. “It’s really nice that as we come to a close, we can make a donation that recognizes the needs of young people in this community,” said Charlene Bernhardt, a founding member of Thursday @10. The group’s $1,500 donation will go toward FORT’s programming

and provides much appreciated assistance to the organization. McNally House also received a $1,500 donation. “Donations like this from community partners are extremely important to us,” said Gijs de Groot, resource developer with FORT. “Getting our programming kickstarted after COVID has been a challenge. There are youth in this community that need a safe space and we want to fill that gap.” Looking back, @10 members are very proud of the work they were able to do in Grimsby. “We love each other. We enjoy each other’s company and we know we were able to provide some great programming for the people of this community,” said Linda Coutts, also a founding member.

Inspections net 8 charges Eight charges were laid from 29 vehicles inspected during a joint commercial vehicle inspection blitz conducted June 21 in Lincoln. The enforcement focused on identifying commercial motor vehicles which they believed were intentionally bypassing the Vineland Truck Inspection Station. Charges included: 58 commercial vehicles stopped; 29 Commercial Motor Vehicles inspected; eight charges laid; six warnings were Issued, and one licence plate seized.

Despite post-WWII hopes, wars persist While there is no one left to give us eyewitness reports about the War of 1812, there are still plenty of us with memories of WWII. For example, in the school I attended, Friday afternoon was War Savings Day. To raise money for wartime expenses, we could buy War Savings Certificate for five dollars. We could purchase 25 cent stamps to collect until the $5 limit was reached. It may sound like peanuts, but when the war was over, some of us had a little cache of certificates to cash in. With the coming of war, there were many changes in our everyday life. When Mother went shopping, she had to be sure to take along

Housewives quickly became skilled at figuring out how much they could buy, and how to use the stamps to their best advantage. My favourite beverage was milk, but coffee drinkers complained bitterly about the flavour of the artificial coffee made with chickory. These were small inconveniences. The big one was having a brother who was overseas in Belgium with the RCAF. We sent him long detailed let-

ters that he probably didn’t have time to read. Nevertheless, we wanted him to know that we missed him and couldn’t wait for him to get home again. Once a week, my father filled out a form that sent 60 cigarettes to my brother. That was supposed to have a soothing effect on the serviceman, but in my brother’s case established a lifelong addiction which had an unhappy end. Yes, our lives changed, but we were extremely thankful that they did not change as much as the French and Belgians. By winning that war, we hoped to end war forever. Apparently, we were not successful.

GARDEN From Page 1 “This view is why we signed on.” John and Joanne spent the next 50 years building and maintaining a garden oasis on their property. John got to work stabilizing the land and building a driveway. Tiered garden beds were built at the front of the house using repurposed stones from the grist mill and the creek and a lush garden started thriving under the shade of the Bruce Trail. “John is the builder and I’m the planter,” said Joanne. The property is full of tall trees which Joanne has grown herself from seeds, including some tropical varieties of plants. “We’re in a special area,” said John. “The escarpment creates a nice little microclimate within a microclimate for these plants.” John and Joanne will be a part of the upcoming Grimsby Garden Tour, hosted by the Grimsby Garden Club. On July 16, gardeners around town will have their properties on display for people to view and learn from. Garden tourists will also hear some interesting history from

the Holborne’s property. As you walk to the back of the home, there is a large flat rock just to the right of the view of the creek. “That is our famous rock where Lady Simcoe herself would sit and sketch the wildlife on her way up the trail,” said Joanne. “She was so much more than the standard lady of that time.” Tickets for the garden tour are $20 and can be bought at Coles or on Eventbrite. The event is a fundraiser for the Grimsby Garden Club.

“Proceeds will go towards beautifying Grimsby through our involvement with the planting and maintenance of the Elm Street beds, the garden at Peach King Centre near the Hope tree, scholarships to our local high school students, the Grimsby Trillium Program and the hanging plants and planters along Main Street,” said Karen Gough, of the Grimsby Garden Club. John and Joanne are looking forward to sharing their property with the people of Grimsby, along with several other beautiful gardens in town. “This is the best

Laugh’s on us The Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area board shifts its Comedy Night in Grimsby showcase from its monthly format back to its original weekly format for the rest of the summer starting next week. This series was very popular when it was launched last summer - just as everyone was getting out from under the COVID restrictions of the day. This year, we’ve got a bit of a head start so there will be no capacity limits on the show. All are welcome to the free comedy shows in Coronation Park, which run every Wednesday from July 7 to Aug. 25 starting at 7 p.m. Just bring a lawn chair M.W.

Keep your eye on the ball The Canada Day weekend, while super busy from a local newspaper hack perspective, is undoubtedly one of the best weekends of the calendar year. This weekend will be the first such weekend of “back to normal” for the full proceedings of Canada Day festivities in Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln. Each community hosts its own, unique event and they always bring out residents by the thousands. One of the resounding comments emanating from this month’s Happening In Grimsby was how happy people were to see friends and neighbours - many of whom they had not seen since summer of 2019. “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” comes to mind. Now, there are still those out there - for a variety of reasons - are very cautious where COVID is concerned and more power to them if they are being extra careful. Generally speaking, especially in an outdoor setting, the vast majority are plowing into these long-awaited community events with great zeal young and old alike. They certainly cannot be blamed. There is a lot of ground to make up when it comes to socializing and just plain having fun. These events are the beating heart of our community. Each time one of these kinds of major community activities takes place it tightens the weave on the fabric of our community.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT These days - and not just in our area, our province and our country - there are subversive forces doing all they can to disrupt and erode that same fabric which holds us together. It is unfortunate the Canadian flag has been sullied by some of those faux freedom fighters who chose to wrap themselves in the red and white. For many, the flag no represents extremist views offered by a very small minority which claims to speak for the masses. No doubt, they do speak for some, but nowhere close to the majority. I had someone in my office Tuesday who noted these Ottawa demonstrators, who disrupted the nation’s capital for weeks, plan to return on Canada Day to Parliament Hill. They question, if they were truly interested in building the community up, why would they attempt to disrupt the country’s national holiday instead of getting behind it and building it up. This is the kind of basic question behind much of

that posturing that has gone on. There are some 100 per cent valid concerns about infringement of freedoms mixed in the concerns protesters have voiced, but along the road they travel many veer off that core path and muddy their message with far political right rhetoric. That is where the vast majority of Canadians get off their bus - if they were ever on it. We are learning lessons from our friends south of the border in terms of what to NOT take for granted. Even the most basic rights can be blown up if you don’t watch out. So when some of these “freedom fighters” speak, it is worth listening to them. Nobody has to agree with them, but it is important to hear them out and try to understand their perspective. Canadians, for my entire lifetime, have had a worldwide reputation as peacekeepers and bridge builders. We need to use those traits within our country and keep that national fabric tightly woven and intact. It is not always easy to listen to people you don’t agree with - and social media fans the flames of quick-draw thinking and snap judgements. Canadians are not in the social storm our U.S. friends are, but we could be, and soon, so let’s keep our collective eye on the ball, know where we want this great country to be and keep pushing it in that singular direction.

Comedy nights shift to Coronation Park After a successful run during winter-spring in a monthly format, Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area Board’s Comedy Night in Grimsby shifts to weekly shows for the summer starting Wednesday, July 6. “When the board started this program last summer, we looked ahead to making this a permanent feature to do something different to get people coming back downtown,” said DIA president Mike Williscraft. “It has been a tough couple of years for all businesses and we saw this as an opportunity to get people out, give them a laugh or two and promote the

downtown. The monthly shows planned through the winter after the successful pre-Christmas shows - was a nice bridge to connect the summers and keep momentum.” Monthly shows had been planned from January to June this year, but the first two were cancelled due to COVID restrictions. From March to June, Station One Coffeehouse played host to the shows. “By all accounts, their new venue upstairs was a great room for the comedians to play and awesome for showgoers. Nicki Manley and her team there did a great job,” said Williscraft.

Now, the focus shifts to Coronation Park, adjacent to Village Inn Plaza, where the shows started last summer. The weekly shows will run every Wednesday night starting at 7 p.m. “The shows are free for all, with family type programming, so good for all ages. Come downtown to do a little preshow shopping, have dinner and take in a free show. It can’t get much better than that,” said Williscraft. The shows are hosted by David Green of Garden City Comedy Festival Productions and sponsored by Grimsby DIA and NewsNow.
