When community groups host their various events they usually hope for great weather and a good turnout. West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary got both - lots of both last Thursday for the reboot of the group’s annual Strawberry Tea event at Mountainview Christian Reformed Church. As in other years, the group sold tickets in advance and at the door. “We never expected the kind of response we got last week,” said Auxiliary publicity chair Marlene Morais. “We were very sorry to have to turn so many people away. We will definitely be more careful next time.” The hall could likely have been filled twice over for the tea, which included draws and a fashion show in addition to the star attraction, fresh strawberry shortcake.

Team effort
What has been a team effort - among Smithville Knights of Columbus (SKC), Twp. of West Lincoln, Smithville Garden Club, Niagara Community Garden Network (NCGN) and many volunteers - has culminated in an expanding community garden with individual growing beds, four fruit trees and now a greenhouse. Families and individuals can grow their own produce or grow to support West Lincoln Community Care. Last week I mentioned Grimsby’s first mayor, Charles T. Farrell. I heard almost immediately from Paul Phelps whose grandmother was a Farrell. Two corrections: John Farrell was the mayor’s father, not grandfather. Also, the shoe store was not where Giant Tiger is today. It was in a building on Main Street nearer to Depot Street. Thanks for those tips, Paul. Grimsby has had many notable Farrells since Patrick and Katharine O’Farrell arrived here from Donegal County, via Pennsylvania and Thorold. Patrick was a stonemason, and had no trouble finding work in that era of stone buildings.
A Small Drop of Ink
By Dorothy Turcotte Patrick’s son, John was a shoemaker who had a shop first in Grassie, then on Depot Street in Grimsby before moving to the Main Street location. John did repairs and custom work in the back of the shop while his son William looked after retail. When William died unexpectedly, his brother Charles took over. Charles had a good knowledge of everything going on because the store had a stove where local men met to talk and smoke. Also, his son, Vance, was the local dentist. There were other Farrells, too. John’s son
Henry formed a partnership with Art Hewson to build a basket factory where the town swimming pool is now located. Four of Henry’s sons were hockey stars of the era. They were Charles (Dad), Roy, Reginald and Horace (The Colonel). Their cousin, Ralph (Red) Farrell was also a hockey star, playing for the Kitchener Panthers. Incidentally, the families were known as the Black Farrells and the Red Farrells because of the genes that gave them either dark or red hair. Charles T. Farrell was the first mayor of the Town of Grimsby. He had the experience for the job, having been mayor of the village of Grimsby for three years.

Residents can make a delegation or submit written comments for the meeting which will be held at town hall and via Zoom. “This is a very exciting project for the Town of Lincoln as it adds much needed housing, commercial, and employment opportunities to our community. The number of jobs this
project will bring to our community, both during and after construction, will help support our overall community. The Zoning By-law regulates the types of land uses and the character, height, location, size and massing of buildings for all lands in the study area. The new Comprehensive Zoning By-law will replace Zoning By-Law No. 93-14-Z1 and implement the policies of the Town’s Official Plan and provide updated zoning and development standards that reflect current policy and regulatory initiatives at the provincial and Town level. The proposed new Zoning By-law document and mapping includes updates within the Prudhommes Secondary Plan Area to implement the Secondary Plan’s vision for a walkable, mixed use waterfront neighbourhood. Updates to the Prudhommes area include adjustments to zone boundaries and additional flexibility for low-rise dwellings and the high-rise areas. The Town of Lincoln has retained GHD to undertake a Schedule ‘B’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) to study improvements to Lakeshore Road and Verity Lane in light of ongoing shoreline erosion. The Preferred Solution is relocation of Lakeshore Road south of the existing road away from the shoreline and conversion of Verity Lane to a private laneway (see map).

Background As a result of high-water levels and isolated flooding events, sections of the shoreline have eroded resulting in significant damage to the road, requiring emergency repairs. Recognizing that climate change may result in increased lake levels and wave energy, long term improvements are required.
The Process This study followed the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) for a Schedule ‘B’ project in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Municipal Engineers Association MCEA manual (October 2000, as amended in 2007, 2011 and 2015), which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. Leaping through four decades By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Skipping towards a future that will include them as Olympic athletes, the Lincoln Leapers looked back Saturday at the dynamic team’s 40year history in the making. It all started at Campden Public School with a few students and a teacher who embraced life with his heart and soul. “We would like to celebrate our 40th by honouring posthumously the founder of our club and naming Tom Bailey as the first inductee into the Lincoln Leapers Team Builder Hall of Fame,” President Peter Genovese told the crowd at the Fleming Centre in Beamsville. The first competitive jump rope team in Canada, the Lincoln Leapers played a fundamental role in the development of the sport and they have grown into one of the largest and most dec-
orated teams, holding provincial, national and world titles. Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton shared a story from the early 1980s when the Leapers, led by Bailey came to Council asking for a donation to help pay for a van to travel to competitions. At the time, Council had no idea of the group’s potential, “but they just took

OTTIER, Eileen Patricia (nee Olds) November 21, 1955 - June 13, 2022
Holding the hand of her loving husband of 48 years, Eileen passed away on June 13, 2022. Together with Michel, she devotedly raised children David and Karen and was a loving mother-in-law to Lana, Laurens, and Lexi. Adoring grandmother to Stefanja, Lucas, Madison, Benjamin, and Olivia. Proud fur mom to Beatrice and Jake. Cherished daughter of Mildred and Frank Olds, and daughter-in-law to Dorothy and Eldon Ottier. Survived by all her siblings, she will be fondly remembered by Francis Olds, Marjory (Robert) Wilson, Joanne (Ray) DiCiacca, Frank (Wendy) Olds, and Robert (Franka) Olds, as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. We hope she finds peace reunited with her beloved mother, father, aunts, and uncles. While we mourn the loss of Eileen, we will remember the wonderful times we were able to share with her. Eileen was a generous person by nature, always looking for an opportunity to help. She had a passion for creating, whether a beautiful garden or delicious dish, she was an even better neighbour by sharing all that she created. Eileen enjoyed the simple things in life and cherished her time with family; Christmas parties at Frank’s house, Olds family picnics, fishing on Walker Lake, sleepovers with the grandkids, or sitting around her sister’s table. The family thanks the wonderful and caring staff at St. Catherine’s General hospital and Dr. Aube. As per Eileen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. It is with great sadness that on Wednesday, June 15th, we said goodbye to John Belton as he passed away at AbleLiving support services in Binbrook. John bravely battled cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and the onset of dementia after losing his wife Doreen (06-26-16) 6 years earlier. Survived by their four children: Julie Brown (Jim,) Paul, Jan, and Anthony (Tony) Belton. Also missing their Grandpa are: Janelle, Brock, Brianna, (Robbie) and Ashley (Andrew) and great grandchildren Brynn and Mackenzie. Predeceased by his brothers Clifford, Peter and sister, Ena. John and Doreen came from England and settled in Grimsby in 1960. John worked for Ford dealerships of Canada before retiring and enjoying the great outdoors in Ontario and Canada. His passion was tennis and he volunteered at the Grimsby Tennis Club for 25 years. He enjoyed skiing and camping throughout Ontario and Canada. His gardening and cycling were also his enjoyment in his later years. The family would like to thank all those who made his life comfortable during the last six years. Thanks to the staff at Grimsby Hospital, the volunteers and PSWs along the way. He was given great care at AbleLiving services, and we thank them for their efforts to make him comfortable. Prudhomme’s on next week’s agenda In the story on Page 5, I likened the Prudhomme’s Landing development planning to a marathon. Really, it’s been more like three marathons. The first one was simply for the right buyer to come along. The property changed hands - or the public heard it had - several times with deals falling through for nearly a decade. Finally, along came John Fracchioni and his team. These guys deserve a lot of credit for working with Town of Lincoln over many years. That development will be a true gem on Lake Ontario and I hope they make a bazillion dollars along the way. They deserve it. Next week, the public can comment on the development’s bylaw - the foundation on which the place will be built. If interested, take the time. Speak now, or forever hold your peace. M.W.
Kudos Happening committee Aside from the 2021 Grimsby Santa Claus parade, the reboot process for community events has not had any of the big boys step up so we could assess general interest and review if such programming would take off once again. Yes, there have been good events like the Easter Egg hunts, championship level hockey from the Grimsby Peach Kings and this month’s Graze The Bench, but nothing on the scale of 14,000 or 15,000 rolling through the downtown core over the span of a day to enjoy all the community can muster. After Saturday’s Happening in Grimsby, I think it is safe to say we can check off a few boxes now. For sure, area residents are glad to have their major community festival in Grimsby back. Yes, attendance was super with every aspect firing on all cylinders - and that was a tough task for the organizing committee given planning was still being nursed along back in COVID lockdown days and much of the event financing was caught up with preelection grant issues. Setting all that aside, Chair Simon Duong and his committee did a great job and should be commended for their efforts. Having been on that particular committee - and a host of others - I am fully aware what it takes to make these events come to life. It can be fun, but not always, and it certainly is rewarding

As for the event itself, there were lots of new things to see and do. Really, nothing overly fancy, but they didn’t need to be so. The games on the street were a big hit, the vendors’ alley had lots of unique vendors, Nelles Manor Museum’s programming was a great complement. I must say, I feel like I was a bit derelict in my duty by missing most of the event but, honestly, I would not change a thing. I got a text from daughter Sarah late Thursday that there were tickets available for her graduation from Carleton’s journalism program the next night. That set off some fevered planning, but key to it was ensuring proper coverage of Happening. Thanks to Smokin’ Jo McDonald, you see the fruits of her labour all over this week’s edition. Thanks again, Jo. That whole trip worked
out great. Drove to Ottawa in the morning, two hours to spare before the grad started, grad was exciting, fun dinner out, snooze, up early, breakfast, then hit the road back - easy peasy. We got back just in time for me to catch the very end of things. I just got in a quick buzz around to see how things were set up, but listening to people who were there most of the day, everything went great. There were a ton of people who were just happy to be out. I think it could have rained all day and they would still have been happy. The people I made a point to speak to about the event were those who have been around for awhile - by that I mean 10 or more years - as they have perspective on how good and bad events can roll through. When you hear words like “amazing”, “total blast” and “awesome” from people who are usually reserved at best certainly bodes well for the public’s sentiment and for the event itself in the future. And now we have Canada Day festivities right around the corner. Boy, I missed this stuff. Both as an editorial guy who gets to cover these things and also as a resident who just plain enjoys getting out to see people. This all comes under you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone, but I think we all know what we had all along and were none to happy it was gone.
