Grimsby, Lincoln Fire to share a new coordinator By Tristan Marks NewsNow Lincoln council approved entering into an agreement to share the services of an emergency management coordinator Monday night. With this new agreement, Lincoln and Grimsby will share costs of the coordinator and related emergency preparedness and business continuity programs. Joining the program was turned down by West Lincoln and Wainfleet, but Wainfleet may reconsider its position, said Lincoln Fire Chief Greg Hudson. Summer is here (sort of) and it’s Happening in Grimsby Revamped and renewed, the Happening in Grimsby is ready to roll this weekend. There will be many opportunities for visi-
tors to have fun and enjoy themselves with sights, smells and tastes. There are also opportunities to help give back to the com-
munity while doing so. The Foundation of Resources for Teens (FORT) will provide one of those opportunities with a strawber-
ment the by-law without West Lincoln and Wainfleet. Currently, the four municipalities already participate in a reciprocal use agreement for manpower and equipment. With this set-up, the smaller municipalities pay for inter-municipal emergency aid on a case-by-case basis. The new agreement involves sharing emergency preparation and collecting fees for the shared services, according to a budgetary schedule rather than à la carte. Hudson said West Lincoln and Wainfleet will have to pay their share to be part of it. See FIRE, Page 3

Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain was named Fire Chief of the Year by the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association (OMFPOA) on June 14. The presentation was made during the organization’s annual conference in Oshawa. Cain’s history with the Town of Grimsby goes back to a stint as a building and plumbing inspector from
1991-2000. After a brief stint elsewhere, he was back in 2002 as fire prevention officer. He was made deputy chief in 2004 and assumed the chief’s role in 2009. Throughout his tenure, Cain’s mantra has been consistent and persistent - prevention, prevention, prevention. “It is a paradigm shift from suppression to See CHIEF, Page 5

Indeed, it is because of community support that the fundraiser will be happening at all. The sundaes will be made from strawberries donated by Hildreth Farms and ice cream donated by the Dutch Shop. “This fundraiser would not be possible without their generosity and those of our volunteers,” said Shaw. Lots to see, do at Happening Grimsby’s downtown core will be abuzz this week with all things Happening in Grimsby. While Saturday is the main event, the whole things kicks off with Thursday’s Grimsby Farmer’s Market, summer solstice version. Friday night, the grounds of the Peach King Centre will launch the Peach Pit area, with U2 cover band Desire headlining, while Riley Michaels opens starting at 6 p.m. The ‘Pit will also include local wine and craft beer vendors as well as food trucks. Saturday the Pit gears up again with The Killin’ Time Band with Off The Record opening. Downtown, Main Street will be packed with vendor booths, displays, live performance stage, interactive activities and more. In Coronation Park, bouncy toys, displays, vendors and more is planned “We’ve tried to bring a mix so there is something for everyone,” said Happening committee chair Simon Duong, noting Main Street runs 10 am-4 pm. “Watch for the free bus connecting many locations from Mountainview Church to Lakemount.”

He explained his position after the meeting adjourned, saying it all had to do with Lincoln’s commitment to hiring the emergency management coordinator. He said the Town approved the budget for advertising the position when all four municipalities were still on-board. “We had an agreement,” he said.

New Campden fire hall set to protect community for years The residents of Campden can rest easy knowing they have a new fire station to watch over them. The station celebrated its grand opening on Saturday with an open house. During this, they unveiled a plaque bearing the crest of the Lincoln Fire Department that sits on the building’s front wall. “The Town of Lincoln committed to replace the over 50-year-old, two-bay current site with a three-bay modern fire station facility. The facility will help Lincoln Fire and the Campden firefighters protect the community for the next 50 years,” said Lincoln’s Deputy Chief Bill Blake.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It is indeed an honour and a privilege to have been elected president of the governing board, and to be part of the executive committee that will lead GBF Community Services into the future. I look forward to working with our Board, to focus on our mandate, and continue to grow GBF as an organization, providing social services in Grimsby. For more than 50 years, GBF has strived to make life a little easier for people in Grimsby, who just needed a little help. From what began as a Christmas hamper programme, and later grew into a Food Bank, GBF has become the largest provider of non-governmental Social services in West Niagara. Today, we offer programmes under 4 pillars, Food, Housing, Health and Wellness, and Youth. We have come a long way in those 50 some years, and we can do more. We have a wonderful, generous group of donors, and with their donations of resalable goods, and their monetary donations, we are on track to put $1 million back into our community this year. We are proud to say that 100% of all monetary donations go directly into the programmes for which they were intended. As well, the largest part of our retail sales, fund our programmes. To do more, all we need is resources. We may never get a gift, such as the $100-million-dollar gift announced last week in Toronto, but everything we have done, and everything we can still do, is made possible, only by the generosity of our volunteers, and that of our community. So we urge anyone who is looking for a place to direct your charitable donations to, please consider GBF. And, remember, your money goes directly back into your community, Grimsby. Smithville Guides net $750 score Major University seeks participants for national hearing study.
Connect Hearing and Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing. Study Parameters The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from one-on-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.
The 1st Smithville Guides and Pathfinders received a donation of $750 from the West Lincoln Non-Contact Hockey League last month. The league hosts a hockey tournament every year and donates the proceeds to community groups. The Guides/Pathfinders are looking forward to using the funds for upcoming trips, supplies and camping. The three league representatives (back, L to R) Tim Wall, Adam Hare and Zach Kot presented the girls and Guider Sharlene Volpatti (back) with the money.

Died peacefully on May 24 at the age of 77. Left to mourn him are his wife Laura of nearly 52 years, son Alexander (Kathy), daughter Alison (Graham),sister Margaret (Wain), brothers in law Will (Josie), John (deceased) (Marlene), mother-in- aw Annie, Uncle Peter and Aunt Annie, 7 nieces and nephews and 2 loved cousins. He also leaves behind close friends, especially Norma and John, work colleagues and good neighbors. Iain taught geography at Saltfleet High School for many years. While there he coached football and volleyball, travelled with students overseas, enjoyed many canoe trips to Algonquin Park and ski trips in Quebec and Vermont. His great love for his children led him to become involved with local sports in Beamsville where he coached them in hockey and soccer. He was the Lincoln Soccer convener for many years. Iain had many talents and interests but above all he loved his family. He was proud to be a member of the Master Gardener group. He enjoyed reading, cooking, fishing, travelling and good conversation. He had been fishing, hiking and camping in the Temagami area for 70 years, ever since he was a boy who came to Canada from Scotland. He was planning a fishing trip for June which Alexander will now have to take alone but with amazing memories of beautiful days together. Iain continued to be a lifelong learner for after he retired from teaching he took horticulture courses at Niagara College. Passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019, in her 96th year. Beloved wife of the late Francis (Frank) Swanson (1997). Loved mother of Frank (Karen), Fred (Janet), Jim (Lia) and David. Cherished grandmother of Jim, Spencer and Mike. Dear sister of Carl Johnston and the late Margaret Taylor, Burt Johnston, Fred Johnston, Rita Loveless and Eva O'Riordan. Dear sister-in-law of Isabelle and Vic Simpson. As a young woman, Jean was a proud Registered Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Peterborough where she met her husband Frank. After they married, she devoted herself to raising her family and enjoyed a full, rich life. Jean was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Grimsby. She will be sorely missed. Loving Opa to Lindsay Novak (Steve), John, James, Owen, Laura, Luke, Marieka and Abbey. Great Grandfather to Malachi and Evangeline. John’s passion for people and his desire to lead others to the Lord led him to serve as pastor to Lindsay, Brockville, Hamilton and Mississauga Christian Reformed Churches. In later life John took up the torch for the challenged and served with Christian Horizons in the capacity of public speaker and fundraiser. Still later he served as Executive Director of the Bible League Canada and was instrumental in the development of the Bible for Missions Thrift Store program across Canada. John’s passion for travel led him to guide numerous group tours to Israel and many more to Europe and Asia in support of the Christian causes close to his heart. Until failing health prevented him, John continued to preach in area churches. Family, friends, and others whose lives John touched attended Visitation at Mountainview Christian Reformed Church, 290 Main Street East, Grimsby on Tuesday June 18, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., A Service of Remembrance was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Mountainview Christian Reformed Church. Volunteers of the 2019 Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up spent the day tidying up Grimsby’s beaches on June 9. This year they focussed on Casablanca Beach and Grimsby Beach, where they removed over 400 lbs. of littered waste. The team was made up by over 30 volunteers from CIBC Grimsby.
Drum down the Solstice Sun this Friday The 11th annual Summer Solstice, Drumming Down the Sun & Yoga on the Beach celebration at Charles Daley Park in Jordan will be held this Friday. Everyone is welcome to participate, and no experience is necessary. Join drum master Zephie James on the West Beach where he will teach you how to drum and lead the drumming circle. If there is a big storm that washes out the beach before the 21st all will gather on the lawn on the west side of the
pavilion. The event runs rain or shine. It is wheelchair accessible. Donations will go towards honorariums, organizational expenses with a portion going to the Niagara Land Trust. Natalie Rogers from Keepexpanding and her colleague Heather Jones from The Village Yogi will lead yoga from 7-7:45 p.m. Please bring a mat or blanket. Donations accepted. Bring a tarp or a large plastic garbage bag or plastic sheet to put under your mat.

Congratulations, Chief Cain When you’re in a community for 25 years or so you get to know people very well. Because of that, the opportunity to work with Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain has cropped up many times. Certainly in the line of seeking information of fires, both working and extinguished; awareness events the department has run; budget time when equipment is sought or other capital expenditures, and; a host of other moments. Chief Cain is always professional, thoughtful and to the point, which is greatly appreciated. These traits should be appreciated by all residents as he has done an excellent job steering Grimsby Fire’s evolving service as the community as a whole changes. Now, this month, he has been recognized as Fire Chief of the Year in Ontario for his efforts in pushing a prevention agenda virtually his entire firefighting career. Congratulations, Mr. Cain. End of month countdown is on Off the top, the opening date for the new mega high school needs to be clarified from last week’s column. I heard from two people, one was Brett Sweeney, District School Board of Niagara’s communications officer, who noted the opening date has been pushed back from 2020 to 2022. To which I said, “huh?” To clarify, Sweeney sent me a release which was sent out in mid-February denoting the sale of the land for the new school had been finalized. The fifth paragraph of the nine paragraph release reads, “With the site work beginning shortly, the new school is expected to open its doors in September, 2022.” This was the only reference to the two-year delay in the opening noted by the DSBN. It seemed odd, which I noted, that the release does not point out it is a delay in timing, rather it notes there was a funding delay from the province for the land acquisition. It would appear there was no time contingency for any delay as Sweeney noted the funding delay is the reason for the completion of the build. I note all this because very few people in the general public were aware of the delay. Granted, if you have a child in the stream you would be paying close attention, but most people are not in that boat. At this point, if you are driving by and see ground is broken and some major excavation is underway, the project is in the remediation of soil phase. The state of that site has been well known in the community for many years, and DSBN has planned to clean up the site as part of the build. “... soil sampling was com-

Sampling being taken now is for verification purposes and will continue throughout the project to ensure safety and the best possible conditions,” noted Sweeney. At any rate, I just wanted to make sure all are on the same page as only one person of the 50 or so I canvassed over the last week were aware of the pushed back date. •••••• I just wanted to take a second to note my thanks for the patience many are showing as we work through a backlog of stories and photos. When I knew I was going to be a away, I set a lot in motion as I didn’t know what size the paper would be that week and we had to make sure enough was banked both for that week and the following edition since I would be back only one day in advance. It never ceases to amaze me just how much is happening in our area and it is a constant juggling act to get hard news in with a mix of features and events while paying attention to our three municipalities. There are several groups and many individuals who have had their stories banked for up to three weeks and I really hate holding anything more than
two weeks, but we went a little overboard in generating copy. We always have more copy and photos than space in which to publish. In this case, it may take us two more weeks to get caught up and get everything “out there”, so just wanted to let all know who may be waiting, I have not forgotten you. We will get there!! ••••••• All’s quiet on the West Lincoln Memorial front. It will likely remain that way until the end of the month when a series of board meetings have been planned and it likely that, at the end of all that, a $10 million ask to the provincial government for additional capital build costs will be made. The ask will be for the work which Hamilton Health Sciences went a very long way to justify as they rejigged their target at several points over the last seven months. They have what they want in the now-planned closure of one of the operating rooms - and obstetrics along with it - for a minimum of six weeks. More importantly, the ball is about to be knocked into Premier Ford’s court with a “you want services maintained? Great! Ante up the $10 million and we’ll be good to go” message. If the province doesn’t have the money and/or cannot find it, further justification for a long-term closure is just around the corner. It will be a very interesting last week of June, especially with the announcement of any changes under the province’s regional governance review due the same week. I wonder if Mr. Joosse booked off June 28 yet? It could be a great time, or an incredibly painful time for all in Niagara West.
