Lincoln set to roll with Greenlane reconstruction plans By Sarah Williscraft NewsNow The contentious Greenlane Road reconstruction plan got a green light from Lincoln’s Committee of the Whole on Monday, June 6. While there has been
considerable discussion on individual developments and impacts of Greenlane redesign itself in the months leading up to last week’s vote, there was no discussion or comment as a staff report was approved.
“Moving forward, the project team will proceed with finalizing the detailed design that was presented to the public including working with directly affected landowners to address property specific
concerns,” according to the report. While the report stated public feedback for the construction plans was generally positive, the report also highlighted several concerns raised by resi-
dents whose properties are directly impacted by the proposed multi-use pathway construction. These concerns included driveway impacts, front yard landscaping and overSee GREENLANE, Page 2

Public Works received comments from concerned residents about potential vehicle speeds and public safety. Residents also raised concerns about the impact to vineyards and farmers’ fruit stands located near the construction plans. The report acknowledged the need for
increased accommodation for customer parking along the roadside. For the rest of 2022, Public Works will focus on refining the design of Greenlane’s construction plans. Some of these refinements include further discussion with property owners to work through their concerns, finalizing a detailed design based on resident feedback, preparing for utility relocations, minor property acquisition, permitting for the project, refining and updating the budget where necessary and preparing contract drawings for 2023 construction. In February, Lincoln’s Committee of the Whole also approved a 346-unit con-
do complex on Greenlane Road and Ontario Street, which will anchor the major thoroughfare’s redevelopment. DeSantis Homes proposed the complex and it was carried with a 5-4 vote. Mayor Sandra Easton and Councillors Paul MacPherson, JD Pachereva, Greg Reimer and Lynn Timmers voted to give their go-ahead. Councillors Tony Brunet, Adam Russell, Dianne Rintjema and Mike Mikolic opposed. Project consultant Matt Johnson, said the design which calls for 346 total units – 141 one-bedroom; 148 onebedroom-plus den, and; 57 two-bedroom – “introduces a price point that is not really available to residents of Beamsville.”

After two years, Gibson St. bridge ready The Gibson Street bridge, closed since 2020 for safety reasons, has been replaced and officially reopened as of last week. The now-lit bridge was replaced after a $430,000 grant came through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream.
The new structure replaces a bridge built in 1986. The federal and provincial funding awarded supports the Town’s resiliency and will also support active transportation networks that residents will be able to enjoy for years to come, said Brandon Wartman, director of public works.

1922 a big year for Grimsby Exactly 100 years ago – in 1922 - things were really jumping in Grimsby. For one thing, the Village of Grimsby had become the Town of Grimsby, an important step up in the municipal hierarchy. That meant that the town now had a mayor instead of a reeve. The election was held on Jan. 2nd, 1922, with Charles C. Farrell the winning candidate. Charles knew everyone in town. He was employed in his grandfather’s shop on Main Street (where Giant Tiger is located now). Charles’ grandfather, John Farrell made custom boots in part of the shop while Charles sold ready-made boots in the retail division.

By Dorothy Turcotte The store was the centre of Grimsby society, the place where the men met to smoke and discuss everything that was going on in town. The new Town of Grimsby had several innovations. For example, this was the year when numbers were used to identify houses. Before that, everyone knew who lived in each house, so numbers hadn’t seemed important. Also in 1922, Grimsby undertook a large-scale program of paving and sewage up-dating. The construction uncovered the spring on the hill by what is now
GBF. This had been used to provide clear, fresh water for guests at Jack Van Dyck’s Lincoln House Hotel down the street. The spring and piping to the hotel was still running, but had to be covered up again for practical purposes. During paving. Traffic was re-routed up Mountain Street and along Ridge Road. In that year, too, the gates to Queen’s Lawn Cemetery were dedicated in honour of the Grimsby soldiers who died during World War One. This memorial was raised by the women of the area. The Zoning By-law regulates the types of land uses and the character, height, location, size and massing of buildings for all lands in the study area. The Zoning By-law is the Town’s primary tool to regulate the use of all land in the Town. The new Comprehensive Zoning By-law will replace Zoning By-Law No. 93-14-Z1 and implement the policies of the Town’s Official Plan and provide updated zoning and development standards that reflect current policy and regulatory initiatives at the provincial and Town level. The proposed new Zoning By-law document and mapping includes updates within the Prudhommes Secondary Plan Area to implement the Secondary Plan’s vision for a walkable, mixed use waterfront neighbourhood. Updates to the Prudhommes area include adjustments to zone boundaries and additional flexibility for low-rise dwellings and the high-rise areas. Mountain...meet molehill There are far more reasons to avoid online crap (please pardon the language) than engaging in any of it. As a rule I don’t. On the weekend, I saw some posts which really did need clarification. It really was a nondescript issue about the “official” opening of the Gibson Street bridge and a claim that the event, somehow, barred the public from attending. As I do, I went to the source - in this case director of public works Brandon Wartman, who simply noted a missive he sent out was poorly worded. Invites went to council, media and those involved in the construction and he did note erroneously the event was not open to the public. It was open to the public. Being a significant taxpayer spend at just under $500,000, it seemed appropriate to confirm it was open to all. I did not say the initial notice from the Town didn’t exist. My point was only to clarify access to that event. Also part of that conversation, which included Grimsby Coun. Dave Sharpe, dealt with the groundbreaking ceremony at West Lincoln Memorial. The ceremony was attended by a very tight list of 100 invited guests, as per Hamilton Health Sciences’ wishes as they hosted the festivities on their grounds. Sharpe, as a party crasher, was among the guest although not invited, something that did not sit well with many who were on
MIKE WILLISCRAFT hand as they knew dozens who put in countless hours of effort but had to be left off the guest list due to the HHS crowd size limitations. When that event happened, I gave him a pass and didn’t bother mentioning it. I only mention it now because it turned into a whole “thing” on social and I really detest that. If I have something to say, I usually stick to print. It lasts. Dave defends showing up by noting a bunch of elected officials who also went. They were all invited. During a phone call later that day, he added in DSBN Trustee Elizabeth Klassen. Yes, she was there. She was invited as finance chair of the Save & Rebuild Committee. The bottom line is Sharpe crashed the party and was looking to say others did, too. I stand to be corrected, but there were no elected officials there without an invite, so let’s move on. The next matter was Sharpe - an vociferous anti-masker - did not wear a mask during the proceedings as per HHS guidelines.
As part of the string, a group photo was posted which included all who attended. The vast majority had masks on in the photo, save for those who were speakers at the event and some who took their masks off for the time it took to snap a few photos. Now, as happens with the online cancel culture set who choose to take one small piece of a body of information and make a mountain out of that molehill, Sharpe - as he does - went off about how I should “own it” because I was wrong about saying he was the only one there with no mask. It’s true, if you believe taking a mask off as a speaker or for 60 seconds while a photo is taken constitutes someone not wearing a mask at an event, Sharpe is right. I am wrong. You decide, good reader. All this aside, part of the reason I hate social media crap (there’s that word again) is the keyboard jockey trolls - and the antimask set sure has lots of those. The commenting on the page got turned off after a fake account under Tim Coont made a veiled threat reference about a noose. I know who Tim is and I welcome a chance to speak to Chris in the near future - face to face. There is very little in this life I really hate, but I hate spineless people.
