DSBN seeks partnerships for mega-school perks By Tristan Marks NewsNow The District School Board of Niagara is looking for community partners to help enhance the facilities of the new high school for West Niagara. The DSBN held a community meeting Monday night at Grimsby Secondary School to pitch their plans for the site as well as to answer any inquiries or concerns. Helen McGregor, superintendent of curriculum & student achievement lead the presentation which gave an overview of the new school.
It will open in September 2020 taking in all the students from Beamsville District Secondary School and GSS. More than 1,500 students will attend the high school in its inaugural year. McGregor explained all the old specialist programs and shops offered by the existing high schools will continue to be offered at the new one. She added that with the new build also comes opportunity for “potential enhancements,” with help from the community. On the wish list are: two
double gyms, a 1,000 seat theatre, as well as artificial turf and tracks. McGregor explained these facilities would need community partnerships to become a reality, as the Ministry of Education will not fund these extras. The proposed theatre, for example, carries a price tag of $5-6 million. “We’re always looking for partnerships,” she said. Potential partnership agreements include leasing for usage, donations from fundraisers by both the community and the school body
as well as naming rights are all in the mix. McGregor stressed that any partnerships must be finalized by this September as mandated by the ministry. Some audience members, such as GSS alumni Tony Joosse, voiced concern over past usage agreements which the board did not honour. Filomena Goldsworthy, manager of community partnerships, ensured everyone gathered that the DSBN’s new agreements are very detailed and will be “different from agreements from the
past.” Those in attendance also had questions for other topics concerning the school. Several asked about the safety concerns arising from the school location’s proximity to marijuana production facilities. McGregor said that while the grow-ops are under federal and municipal jurisdiction, the DSBN is working closely with the Ministry of Health, along with architects and engineers to minimize liabilities. This event continues the efforts of Jeff’s family and friends to honour his memory by supporting mental health awareness and treatment. All proceeds from the show will go to Pathstone Mental Health and the Jeff McKillop Memorial Fund Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention Projects. In addition to show-

New this year is a swap meet and a car corral, where those looking to sell their vehicles can display them in a special area for potential buyers. Jeff’s friends organized the first car show after his death which came after a long struggle with depression. They wanted to honour his memory by finding a way to help prevent further tragedies. His sister Jennifer McKillop said the idea for a car show came out of Jeff’s love for all things automotive. “Jeff loved everything about cars,” she explained. “He was in derbies since he was old
enough to drive.” Last year, the fund donated $15,000 in Jeff’s name to Pathstone Mental Health. This helped fund “Hear & Now,” a free drop-in counselling service. This year’s proceeds will also support MAPS (Mental Health Awareness Peer Support), which meets Thursday nights at the Pumphouse in Grimsby. “There’s just so much to be done in mental health to get service out to people who need support during crisis,” said Jennifer. “I believe if we all work together we can achieve it.” Admission to the truck show is $5, with kids under 10 entering for free. Happening in Grimsby June 20-22 In just a week, Grimsby will become even more of a “Happening” place. The Happening in Grimsby is back just in time for 2019, running in various locations in town from June 20-22. Although this year sees a new committee reviving the festival after its dissolution last year, the Happening will continue to highlight Grimsby’s great town culture, community and businesses, says event chair Simon Duong. Main Street from Patton to Ontario will be closed Saturday, June 22, to accommodate vendors, exhibitors and local service clubs with the day’s events running 10 a.m.-6 p.m. There will also be different interactive activities such as pony rides for kids, games and interactive booths as well, noted Duong. Coronation Park will include inflatable bouncing houses and much more. New this year is the Peach Pit, a cioncert area outdoors at the Peach Kings Centre. The Pit will be a licensed area featuring live music and beverage booths run on a token system by area wineries, distilleries and breweries. The Pit runs 6-11 p.m. on Friday and 3-11 p.m. on Saturday. The Happening also has a special bus route with two shuttles connecting the town. A full schedule of times and stops will be published on the festival’s website HappeninginGrimsby.ca. While several community groups and service clubs will raise funds during the event, proceeds from the Happening itself will go back into the 2020 event as seed money to make it bigger and better, added Duong.

Stevens steps down as GBF Chair After eight years of leadership, Jamie Stevens is abdicating his role as Chair of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund. He announced his intentions at the organization’s annual general meeting on June 6. Stevens, who has been on the board for 11 years, reflected on his time as Chair saying he helped the members of the GBF board utilize and coordinate their diverse skills to their fullest. “They have a lot of strengths and their own knowledge,” he said. “We brought them together to enhance decisions at the board level.” The GBF saw many important changes

during Stevens’ tenure. In that time, the GBF opened its charity store on Elm St. and began a number of community services including its rent supplement and recent mental health programs. Stevens, who will remain on the board, added that because he is stepping down as Chair, he plans to stick around and help out. “I’ll always be connected to the GBF in one involvement or another,” he said. The charity’s current goal is to put $1 million back into the community each year, whether through its food bank or other programs. “We’re not sitting on our laurels,” said Stevens. “We’re open to new ideas.”

A worthwhile “Engagement” Citizens of Grimsby and re-enactors from afar came out for the Commemoration of the Engagement at the Forty on Saturday. Nelles Manor and the Grimsby Museum hosted the event which had a flag-raising ceremony, mus-

Grimsby’s Gemma Galay is this year’s winner of the Grade 1-3 category of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Provincial Primary Public Speaking Competition. She earned her victory at finals held at the Legion’s A.C. McCallum Memorial Branch in Niagara Falls on May 4. “It’s been many years since someone from our zone has had a winner,” said Niagara Legion youth education representative Kathy Wetselaar. Although Smith Public School was allowing Grade 4 and older children to compete, Gemma still wanted to try. With support from her parents and teacher, Lisa Flynn, she was
permitted to take part in the competition. Her topic was the science and myth of rainbows. With it she won first place in her class,

and went on to win for her grade bracket in the school-wide contest. From there Gemma continued to win with her speech until she arrived at the finals for all of Ontario. Gemma’s father, Matthew Galay said she faced strong competitors. “I was impressed by seeing the calibre and quality of speeches in all categories,” he said. “But she didn’t waver at all. She gave it her best and she continued to succeed.” He said the experience helped his daughter grow in confidence and public speaking ability. “The whole public speaking process was a major confidence booster,” he said. “My wife Lisa and I are very proud of Gemma.” The Grimsby Legion

Keep it rolling While dealing with several other major fires, Grimsby council has inched along with its process to get the council meetings live streamed. This was part of the core transparency and accountability platform of Mayor Jeff Jordan and the vast majority of council when they were candidates in last October’s municipal election. The Finance & Administrative Committee got an update on the status of the project’s development on Monday. The new system will include five video cameras, will have live stream and archiving capabilities, ability to pause during closed session discussions, will integrate current A/V equipment, will be able to provide provide microphone position speaker queueing and have an automated zoom-in function to speakers with microphone activation. Great. Too bad it is one council term late, but money well spent just the same. Keep pushing ahead, council, M.W.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! I am quite positive some will be shocked. I am not. Not even slightly. The sleight of hand game even Beamsville’s magician Nick Wallace would be proud of - sort of - played by the District School Board of Niagara was unveiled, somewhat, at an invitation only meeting Monday night at Grimsby Secondary School. Remember how awesome DSBN officials told us all the new mega-school would be? Remember how they sold us a bill of goods about how the new school would have programs and classes expanded beyond what the tired old worn out facilities at Grimsby Secondary and Beamsville District provide (noting South Lincoln was the first victim of this change-for-the-better). Remember the talk of the artificial turf sports field as an example of just how awesome it would be to shutter our community’s three storied institutions, each in the core of their respective communities in favour of one massive, new facility to be built halfway between Grimsby and Beamsville? Oh ya, it’ll be awesome!!! Well, the true (see previously untalked about) price tag of awesome started to be revealed Monday night. Included in the things NOT to be included is the greenhouse aspect with which BDSS has flourished. All that practical, hands-on experience, gone. On this there was no confirmation, but those in attendance were left with the feeling that there would be no theatre component to the new design unless the communities ante up to pay, er sponsor, said feature. DSBN officials said Monday the projected price tag for just this little bit of awe-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT some will be $5-$6 million for a 1,000 seat. Must be pretty awesome, eh? Then there was talk of a fourth gym for the facility, great. Giddy up! But why do you want the local residents to pay for it? Nobody should have to ante up one dime to get all that was promised, let alone a narrower, less in tune facility than what existed in aging buildings. Taxpayers have one pocket and there is no way anyone should be paying twice. This goes back to when the DSBN throughout its reciprocal use agreement with the Town of Grimsby which allowed them to start charging for minor basketball in the gyms and baseball and soccer on school fields. Previously, the Town maintained those fields in return for being allowed to program recreation uses. Now, DSBN officials said Monday there is a “new” lease process in place but failed to outline what that process is. Unless chipping in anything on this “lease” arrangement includes nocharge use in perpetuity, there’s the door, folks...don’t let it hit ya’. Few wanted to see the fabric of each town shredded by the loss of their own high schools. Those who did
talked about progress and better education opportunities which were supposed to be part of the mix in the $45 million new build. Well if the artsy set had a decent-sized theatre and the sporty types had a shiny new football field and track and the aggies in the crowd had their greenhouse then there could be a modicum of potential there. Now, though, it can be there but you have to pay up. It would seem these things that were touted as potential perks of the new build are not funded by the Ministry of Education. It would seem, too, the DSBN administration and that of Hamilton Health Sciences went to the same school of timing and roll out procedures. Wait until the 11th hour then just regurgitate a boat load of information at the last second with no reasonable amount of time to react or develop an informed opinion. An overstatement? Consider that included in the DSBN’s discussion was a September timeline for commitments as the new megaschool is supposed to be inhabited in the Fall 2020. Some of those who attended noted to me only part of the school (see offices and teachers’ lounge) will be air conditioned? Yep, state of the art! Any commitment of dollars to enhance this educational facility should come with a clear and iron-clad agreement that one, two or however-many gyms, theatre, sports field of any other component be turned back over to the municipalities for programming for each community FREE OF CHARGE. Not negotiable. Not retractable. Otherwise, step off.
