Regional transportation to connect all of Niagara By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Niagara Region’s highly anticipated on-demand transit system is set to roll out Aug. 17. Robert Salewytsch, Niagara’s program manager, transit services, presented an overview of timelines and processes at the Region’s public works committee July 14. At Grimsby council’s July 20 meeting, Coun. Dorothy Bothwell noted information available on the venture is still incomplete, however. Bothwell noted some major revisions have been made to the initial outline council opted into earier this year.

Changing from Mercedes to Toyota vans, from seven passengers to 2-3 (due to COVID-19 safety measures) and phone app questions all require more information, Bothwell noted. “How will this roll out in three weeks? There is a lot we have not seen,” said Bothwell. According to Salewytsch’s report, “robust communications efforts” will begin Aug. 3 with community engagement being initiated Aug. 10. “We are very excited about the on demand inter municipal transit service. Rebuild process breaks new ground By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The West Lincoln Memorial Hospital rebuild process officially moved into uncharted territory last week with the awarding of the planning, design and conformance (PDC) contract. B+H Architects/ mcCallumSather will prepare project documents, including output specifications that will form the guidelines and performance requirements the successful building team must meet when preparing the design. The PDC team will also monitor construction progress and provide coordination and oversight during commissioning, completion, and transition to the new hospital. “This is a significant milestone towards a

new WLMH. We are now further along than ever before on a muchneeded new hospital for West Niagara,” said Hamilton Health Sciences board of directors member and Grimsby resident, Mary Volk. “My thanks to all who have got us this far your continued efforts are much appreciated.” The awarding of the PDC contract is one step further than WLMH’s rebuild process got before it was scrapped in March 2012. “This announcement clearly demonstrates the provincial government’s dedication to keeping this project moving forward. We are closer to getting a much needed new hospital,” said Andrew Smith, chair of WLMH’s Community Advisory Committee. “During these CO-

Lincoln resets popular boardwalk Thanks to support from the Province’s Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, the Town of Lincoln was able to make repairs to Charles Daley Park’s damage from 2019 floods a walk in the park. Early this year the Town completed re-

pairs from 2019 flooding which ran a bill as high as $1.3-million. It applied for some assistance from the Ministry of Municipal and Public Affairs (MMPA) to help cover these costs. In April, the Town received some good news: the MMPA approved a MDRA

Grimsby duo comes full circle with Juno win By Mike Williscraft NewsNow They’ve come a long way from Mrs. Hayes’ pre-School. Adam Goddard and Warren Brown earned their first Juno Award July 2 when their award was announced via press release. Due to COVID-19, no formal ceremonies were held this year. While the Grimsby natives have a history going back to preschool, they didn’t really connect until decades later after

each took very different career paths enroute to their now award-winning partnership. “We were pretty shocked,” said Adam, noting they had been nominated before. “The third time was the charm.” For Warren, he was pinching himself after seeing they were nominated. “That alone was a huge honour. pology and then to Sheridan College for illustration. Adam started honing his musical chops with his garage band - Small Town Preachers, with bandmates John Dinsmore, Stewart McGuire and Tim Dodds. His career, which has covered arts commissions and broadcast productions. Along the way, he has earned many awards, including a Prix Italia, the world’s most coveted award for audio art. Fate brought them together for their first collaboration in 2010. “I was creative director at Cuppa

Coffee Animation and we were looking for a composer for a project we were working on. A friend suggested I talk to Adam,” recalled Warren. That work led to Big Box SingSong, commissioned by CBC Kids, which premiered in 2012. Their process, as Adam noted, is different for each project. In this case, all it took was for Warren to have two bananas in hand, offering “want one?” Next thing they knew they were working with a monkey who was having a “two banana day.” “Warren sketched a

monkey block, I work on lyrics from the character’s point of view with the voice in each song having a very different feel. We really embody the characters,” said Adam. The key to their material is humour, if they laugh at something, that’s a start. “If it makes Adam and me laugh, we feel the audience will laugh. If we don’t laugh, we scrap the idea,” said Warren. Cat missing for a decade home at last The prodigal cat returns. In 2010, Frances Lommen’s cat, Hobbes, disappeared from her home in Smithville. For a decade she searched for the missing feline without any successuntil now. On Wednesday morning, Hobbs turned up at the Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) in St. Catharines, after being turned over by a resident who found the cat around his house in Jordan Station in Lincoln. After receiving Hobbes into their care, staff at the LCHS scanned a microchip implanted in Hobbs and traced his owner. A call to Lommen revealed the 10-year old mystery solved – what happened to Hobbs? Niagara Regional Police have been out in force in recent weeks keeping an eye out for transport trucks illegally using mountain accesses. Police were set up on Woolverton Road July 22.

Ongoing traffic attention important St. Sgt. Shaun Parrent has been on the job as the new commander at 8 District Grimsby for the Niagara Regional Police and it did not take long to understand what is frosting the cookies of many Niagara West residents: traffic. Whether that be the building vibrating motorcycles, speeding motorists or transport trucks using mountain accesses which are just plain dangerous for them to be using, residents see traffic as quite likely their number one concern these days. On a weekly basis NRP cruisers can be seen perched in various locations which many know to be hot spots. With truck traffic, with the vast majority of those issues coming from out-of-the-area truckers, it will continue to be a problem. For this reason, the ongoing attention of the NRP is important and appreciated. M.W.

Logic needs to win the day There is an absolute ton at play this week, so let’s get right to it. First, I would like to thank Niagara Regional Police Deputy Chief Bill Fordy for issuing his heartfelt comments on one of the very hot topics in our society today - racism and how it needs to be dealt with. Whoever coined the phrase “defunding the police” and the media that perpetuated the notion are boneheads, plain and simple. Could someone have not come up with a phrase that even means what the intended purpose of shifting ridiculous responsibilities away from police was - freeing up some of the financial commitment via reduced workload. No, it has to be made to sound like all police are bad, so we’re pulling funding entirely. Who needs police? Let’s just disband departments entirely. Heck, we’re all grown ups. Let’s just police ourselves. If you think that sounds off the wall, I can assure you there are many who do think that way and the way a small minority creates false momentum with our good friend social media these days, everyone needs to pay attention to these situations. The policing situation is not unlike today’s teachers. Teachers have had more responsibility dumped on them considerably detracting from their true jobs - teaching kids. Again, the society of the day has taken advantage of the education system making them glorified babysitters in some cases. Similarly, police aren’t referees. As well, there are many minor incidents where stronger community policing programs could alleviate workload pres-

Over the years, I have done several columns about how I was in Ottawa when real community policing officers were installed around the region - taken from a highly successful Alabama model. It all worked very well, reducing petty crime and vandalism in serious hot spots. Logic, people, not blind and immediate shifts of planning are the way to go, as Deputy Chief Fordy notes on Page 44. I talked to locals and visitors to town alike, all were appreciative of the newly revamped look and the efforts of restaurateurs and retailers alike. It was busy, and that was the whole point. Many had masks. Stores had their heightened COVID-19 processes in place to keep customers and staff safe. It went very well and that was great to see. ******* West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. All I can say is, in Doug We Trust. Premier Doug Ford has stated several times the rebuild will happen and the

process is moving ahead, expedited and streamlined, but well-planned and steady with Hamilton Health Sciences working the plan and planning the work. This week was important. Up until the awarding of the design tender, we were parked at the same spot in the “race” as we were in 2012 when Dalton McGuinty pulled the plug on the rebuild process. The timelines are all laid in front of project planners now and every milestone reached gets the community closer to its goal shovels in the ground and, ultimately, a completed new build. I am very excited at the prospect of seeing this happen, nervous, too. For those not close to the process it is difficult to discern the Herculean effort going into inching things along. To those with their shoulder to the grindstone on a daily basis, let me say your efforts are truly appreciated. ******* This week’s edition. Fishery turns back ‘Hand’ of time (Editor’s Note: The following is a feature previously published in ClubWest Magazine, one which drew the largest reaction from readers in terms of interest.)

elieve it or not, one of Grimsby’s little known industries from the past was commercial fishing. The south shore of Lake Ontario was dotted with smany mall fisheries, most at the mouths of streams which plunged over the escarpment. One of the best-known of these was founded and later operated by three generations of the Hand family. The business began with John Hand who came to Grimsby in about 1875 and later expanded the operation to become a major industry in town. John and his wife, Ellen, were of Irish descent and were among the first Roman Catholics in Grimsby. They were instrumental in the founding of St. Joseph’s parish. Four of John and Ellen’s sons- Edward, Phil, Frank and Jim – all worked together although each had separate fishing licenses and around 1900 they established the business on Forty Mile Pond. At that time, The Forty Creek entered Lake Ontario just east of where the pumphouse currently sits. The Hand’s land eventually extended from the north end of Maple Avenue at the lake (a five-acre parcel which includes Lakecourt Marine today) to the west along the lakeshore to include the land where the pumphouse now sits. In 1900, Phi1 and Frank

leased land around the pond from William Durham. In 1905, Durham sold the property to John Hewitt. Hewitt was a very well-known, local entrepreneur who had gone to Chicago and made a lot of money in real estate and as president of the Miehle printing equipment company. On retiring to Grimsby, he purchased a great deal of land including the pond. Hewitt invested in multiple projects which were helpful to Grimsby. This included bringing a steam dredge from Toronto to clear out the pond which had become silted in. At that time, it was known as Hewitt’s Pond. Sons of the original four fishermen eventually took over the business. Family lore tells us that when Edward’s wife, Alice, heard that John Hewitt was going to sell 23 acres of waterfront land between Maple and Ontario Streets, she immediately Hand’s Fishery

sought out Hewitt and made a down payment. The pond was one of the reasons for Grimsby’s existence. When settlers began to arrive, they were delighted with this little harbour. The lake provided excellent fishing and the pond was a good haven for boats and small ships. Forty Mile Creek had created several waterfalls, so it was also ideal for building mills to grind grain or cut wood. When the LieutenantGovernor John Grave Simcoe arrived for his first visit in 1793, the town’s geography reminded him of a fishing village in Lincolnshire, and he named the new surrounding township Grimsby. The pond was almost more important than the rest of the creek. In 1791, a land board meeting was held “at the 40 Mile Pond”, and official letters

were sometimes addressed from “40 Mile Pond”. Perhaps the authors of those missives were aboard a vessel anchored there. Early maps show a sizeable body of water. The Hand family’s association with the pond was a profitable one. At first, the men fished from open boats propelled by oars. When motorized boats became available, John Hand was the first on the lake to fish from one. It was built by the Allen Brothers of Grimsby. The fleet consisted of two boats. Fishing on Lake Ontario was so profitable that in the 1920s, Edward Hand (always known as Ted) was able to take his family to Florida for a holiday, the first of many. This was long before such family vacations were commonplace. Fishing, though, was hard work. The men went out each day to set their nets, often as deep as 300 feet, no matter what the weather. Depending on the type of fish available, they sometimes fished off Port Dalhousie or Niagaraon-the-Lake. Hauling the nets in again, full of fish was strenuous labour. However, at that time the lake was full of fish in their respective seasons - whitefish, trout, ciscoes,

perch, herring, smelts, and even a few pickerel and sturgeon. The nets were usually full to capacity. The fish were filleted immediately right on site, packed in ice in wooden crates, taken up to the railway station and shipped to Findlay Fish Market in Hamilton, to Toronto or even to the Fulton Fish Market in New York City. Locally, an 11-quart basket of herring or ciscoes could be purchased for 10 cents. Ciscoes are small fish of the salmonid family, then plentiful in Lake Ontario. When smelts were running, all of the Hands including women and children went to work on shore while the men fished on the lake. In fact, the children were kept out of school to help as long as needed. Sometimes, the children were taken out in the boats, never to fish but as passengers. A Hand grandchild remembers the amazement of seeing Toronto come closer and closer. “At that time, the only thing you could see at night looking out on the lake was one light, the big hotel (the Royal York) in Toronto,” said Bill Lipsitt, whose late wife Marilyn was a Hand, the daughter of Velma and Ted. Bill and Marilyn operated Lakecourt Marine for decades. Fishing took place from April until November, but there was plenty to do in the winter as well. The womenfolk never fished with the men, but they did help with the nets which had to be mended or replaced ready for the next season. When the pond froze solid, the Hands cut the ice into blocks and stored it encased in sawdust for insulation in a nearby ice house. This ice would be a valuable asset when fishing began again in the spring and the fish had to be shipped. In 1978, Anne and David Foran bought the property around the pond and created Foran’s Marina. Forty Mile Pond has had an interesting life so far!
