West Lincoln council clear on Pride support By Mike Williscraft NewsNow For a single topic meeting, West Lincoln’s June 16 special meeting called to deal with fallout from a request for the municipality to raise the Pride flag covered a lot of ground. Coun. Harold Jonker dissented. The meeting included one member of the public, Enzo De Divittis, board of directors chair of Pride Niagara. The meeting, conducted via Zoom, was chaired by deputy mayor Cheryl Ganann who took over after Coun. Jason Trombetta “chal-
lenged the chair”. Council voted 5-2 to replace Bylsma for the meeting. Through well over three hours of at times heated debate, Ganann ran a tight ship to keep control of the proceedings. De Divittis opened the core procedings by providing some background for council members. After clerk Joanne Scime read emails and letters into the record for more than one hour, De Divittis said, “Something has to come out of it in a positive and progressive way because the majority of letters that were just read are a prime example of why there should be something done. The majority of the opposing ones strictly spoke about their religious views or their personal views which should not be part of the decision. It is not what the Pride flag represents.” Answering a questions from Ganann, De Divittis said West Lincoln would not be overly late in raising the flag this year as Thorold raise it for the first time in 2019, Wainfleet was two years ago and Lincoln three years ago. This year, part of the issue, Bylsma has contended, is the request came to him directly in the midst of upheaval caused by COVID-19
impacts as opposed to going to town hall. At several points in Bylsma apologized for missing the email request and not forwarding it to staff. De Divittis also noted that similar requests have been made for eight years to West Lincoln with 2020 being the first time the flag will get raised. “In the last two weeks I have learned a lot. I would like to find out more. I would take up that offer and have a more fulsome discussion. I understand the challenges with Zoom but I would like to sit down and learn more,” said Bylsma of De Divittis’ suggestion council go through some sensitivty training on the LGBTQ topic. treated. I think we have done that.” Bylsma did not agree. “I am seriously objecting to this section. I can appreciate the councillor’s view and he could have called me at any point, too. He knows my number. We have had countless conversations and I receive them all as I have with all members of this council. Every single member of this council, I’ve had open and honest discussions with. I have never turned anyone aside or ignored them,” said Bylsma, noting he would have the proceedings reviewed by the Integrity Commissioner, adding, “There are ways and means that people can express their views about my opinion, but this is not it.” Coady challenged the mayor’s view that comments directed at him were inappropriate. “He went on the radio
as Mayor Dave Bylsma. He spoke as the representative of this township. I have no idea how it could be inappropriate for us to speak to how our top representative portrayed himself, this council and the people in this township,” said Coady. “I will find it very difficult, from this point forward, to work with the mayor in any capacity. I think it will be very difficult for this township to move forward with the mayor in any capacity and I, too, would prefer he resign for the benefit of the municipality.” Ganann said council needs to be able to work through issues. “I think we need to listen to all sides of what people have to say to truly become better educated and make better collective decisions,” said Ganann adding all are elected to 2022 and “we have to find a way to move forward.”

Since the COVID-mortgage payment deferral plan was first introduced on March 18th, about one-in-eight households with a mortgage have asked for a payment deferral plan from their lender and CMHC predicts that stat could rise to one-in-five by the time the various deferral programs and Government benefit payments start winding-down in the fall. Many of these requests to defer payments and applications for Government wage subsidies were legitimate requests, but I believe that some requests were a bit premature - in that the borrower’s financial status had not yet been negatively impacted. The problem now: We are now seeing the consequences of the mortgage payment deferral plans as they relate to new mortgage applications for homeowners who want to sell and buy, and to new applications for homeowners who want to refinance or renew their current mortgage; The mortgage lenders are scrutinizing any applications where one or more of the borrowers took advantage of any payment deferral plan, or received the CERB payment - while still gainfully employed… It’s difficult to persuade a mortgage underwriter to approve a new application for a borrower who has just come off any type of COVID related benefit program! If you are experiencing difficulty in obtaining a new mortgage now, because you received CERB payments, and/or applied recently to defer your mortgage payments, then I encourage you to contact me. In addition to the precautions, tour guides have studied a brand new training manuel that is “very detailed” on the house’s history. “Our fantastic volunteers are itching to come back,” said Thompson. Summer tours are available 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and until 1:30 p.m. on Sundays.

FORT prepares to re-open doors July 6 Grimsby’s Foundation of Resources for Teens (FORT) will soon be ready to open its doors to local youth once more. The youth-support organization will reopen for physical programming on July 6, but things will operate a little differently to conform to provincial health guidelines. Rather than offer it’s usual drop-in programming, the FORT will require that teens register for programming until such a time that the organization is allowed to return to its usual way of operating.

For now, the FORT’s programming will allow one block of eight teens each week. All programs are still free, but teens must sign up ahead to get into one of these blocks, which will grant them access to FORT Monday to Friday 1-8 p.m. during their week. “We’ve adapted to the crazy world we live in, and we’re excited to open up once again to provide these services to kids,” said FORT executive director Beth Shaw. ibility, Shaw explained this was necessary to reopen. “However, we are always open for kids in crisis. We’re here to help any teen who’s facing homelessness, mental health crises or other situations,” she added. The FORT will also ensure safety by providing masks, sanitizer, and implementing stringent cleaning measures. Social distancing will be enforced as much as possible and program supplies will be sanitized between uses. Additionally, the FORT facility in Grimsby underwent an entire renovation. Teens will get to experience a renewed and refurbished space for their activities when it opens up. To take part in the
re-opened FORT, youth can register with the program coordinator Liz Bond via phone at 905-309-3678 for Grimsby and Taylor DeGuire at 905-9571991 for Smithville. Although the organization’s facilities were closed, the FORT continued offering online events such as zoom calls through out the closure. Change is a good thing So, it’s Canada Day, or thereabouts, so these ramblings are going to be a rather hapless attempt to convey my view as to what I see going on regarding the massive upheaval and social unrest in this nation and around the world. I note hapless, because I feel so small in this conversation. Anyone who has been within an arm’s length of me knows I am not a small person in stature, but when it comes to such intensely vital subjects such as basic human rights, doing right by people, treating others as you would like to be treated, etc, etc, my voice feels insignificant. Believe it or not, I don’t like to be preachy. It is very difficult to make a point on some of today’s issues without coming across that way. The danger is, if you are perceived that way by your conversation partner, if you listen closely, you will hear an indistinct “click” as they turn off your volume. It is part of what makes topics such as Black Lives Matter (BLM) and equality for the LGBTQ community so difficult to talk about. The core of all this is to note that no racist is born that way....and by racist I mean a genuine racist...not the Facebook kind where one gets branded simply because they don’t 100 per cent agree with or try to make a point contrary to the direction of a conversation. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock some place, you know, in detail, why the BLM movement is so prevalent today. The fact it even needs to be a movement is a sad reflection on society in the first place, but it does. I am one of those people who thinks All Lives Matter which,
MIKE WILLISCRAFT of course, includes our black friends. How that gets construed into a racist term is beyond me. You really cannot get more all-inclusive. So, when your mantra is equality for all, what better slogan could be chosen. BUT, and there always is one. the black people never were on an equal footing and have never had equal opportunities for a host of reasons, so I do understand why more focus and direction is needed to level the playing field, so turn up the volume and keep it rolling. Virtually all of these societal issues go back to your teachings as a youngster. For me, I don’t recall any form of teachings. Things just were. In my hometown of 3,000 people we had one black family that I can recall up to the time I moved to Toronto for college. One of their kids, also named Mike, was a year younger than me. Great guy, very personable, and may be best remembered for his rendition singing “Duke of Earl” in a take-off play done in high school on the TV show Happy Days. His family moved into town late in our public school days. He fit in immediately, hung out with all of us, was a regular at pit
parties, the drive-in, all the regular hang outs. I cannot say he never experienced racism. For me, he was just another guy in town, another friend. That may seem a little too Pollyanna for some of you, and that’s fine. It’s just how it was in a super white, rural area of Ontario. It is hopelessly naive to say, why don’t we all just get along. To take that route simply means you’re good with how things are, so why doesn’t everyone just chill. No, there does need to be action to bring change, not just words, action. The peaceful protests around the world are bringing action in the form of new legislation in the U.S., new policies in the public and private sector in Canada and around the world - all good things. Good things can come from bad situations, it is up to those involved to make it so. If you simply entrench yourself, refuse to engage in meaningful discussion and truly hear the thoughts of those involved in these social discussions you are being just as closed minded as those you may be pointing a finger at. Canada’s place on the world stage - in my lifetime - has been viewed as one of an arbiter, if you will. This is a great nation and don’t you forget it. Set politics aside and simply recognize what you do have, then set about how you think you can make it better. It can always be better, just like any human. On this Canada Day and moving forward, think about what action you can take to make this nation an even better place to live.

No stone has been left unturned in an effort to insure all Ontario College of Health and Technology (OCHT) students maximize their educational experience. After being shut down in late March due to COVID-19 concerns, OCHT will be able to start practical classes only for massage and paramedic programs on July 2. “The college looks completely different with Plexiglas panels, signage, massage tables removed, 1000’s of gloves and masks and new manikins for the Paramedics to use instead of each other for scenarios,” said Mary Ellen Logan, OCHT’s owner and a Grimsby resident. “We solider on.” While in-class studies were suspended, programs still continued via Zoom classes. Those in massage therapy studies used family members for demonstration purposes.

A new program - Educational Assistant–Special Needs Support - started in the middle of it all as the course is all theory, so was conducive to the virtual class process. “We had our very first international student from Nigeria for the program so I didn’t want to cancel it,” said Mary Ellen, noting small groups will be able to meeting in the fall with full PPE. One aspect of OCHT which has fallen victim to the COVID-19 impact was the College Café. “I paid all the staff for the first two months when we hoped this would not last long. Once we realized only 10 students at a time could come back and most of the businesses in our building

have employees working from home, I had to make the decision to close the café. That was heartbreaking,” said Mary Ellen. “Our focus continues to be making sure students are not missing out on any education and they feel supported and connected.” OCHT still has a few spots available for both its massage therapy and paramedic programs which start Sept. 14.
