Council hands Sharpe 15-day suspension By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Grimsby council voted to hand Coun, Dave Sharpe a 15-day suspension based on recommendations of a 44-page Integrity Commissioner (IC) report. The suspension will in-
clude a financial impact of about $830 in pay. In the report, IC Michael Maynard noted Sharpe had breached the Town’s Code of Conduct in many ways in the document. Another major point of contention - forwarding a letter addressed to
council from a resident to a Facebook group - was left unresolved as Sharpe refused to cooperate with Maynard’s investigation he was not providing information which could clear him, Sharpe said, “I don’t want to.” Councillors Kevin
Ritchie, John Dunstall and Randy Vaine - who were the three members of council who voted to ignore the IC’s recommendations and give Sharpe no penalty for his multiple breaches - denfended Sharpe’s actions. Dunstall focused on the

At many points during the 90-plus minute session the crowd cut off council comments and applauded many points. The vast majority of time Ritchie did not attempt to get the crowd under control but, on a couple of occasions did remind those in the gallery about decorum rules. For Coun. Dave Kadwell, regardless of what people

As well, Jordan said it caused serious problems for one

resident who wrote the letter council. Jordan - who initially sought a 90-day suspension for Sharpe - said “Sharpe would have known or ought to have known that circulating the email would be detrimental to the Complainant and their privacy.” Sharpe spoke at length at two points during the proceedings saying he did nothing illegal and contended the 90-day penalty initially was too much. Sharpe wrote the whole process off to “political disagreement”, a comment also noted by Maynard in his report. “There are people who agree with me,” said Sharpe, speaking of his views on mask and vaccine mandates. After 90 minutes of intense discussion, Jordan, Vardy, Freake and Kadwell supported the reduced 15day suspension in the 4-3 vote. Sharpe could not vote on the matter and council was a member short due to Dorothy Bothwell’s resignation. DIFLAVIO SWORN IN Later on the agenda, Nick DiFlavio was sworn in as an appointed councillor to replace Bothwell.

Grimsby couple face historical sex assault charges against children Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section have charged a 64-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman from Grimsby in connection with historical sexual offences committed against children. The investigation began June 10, 2022, when a female victim came forward and reported she had been sexually assaulted by two suspects, between 1987 and 1990, when she was between the age of 13 and 17. The victim attended the same church as the suspects. On June 28, 2022, a second female victim came forward and reported that she had also been sexually assaulted by the same male suspect between 1992 and 1993, when she was between the age of 13 and 14. The victim was a member of the same church the suspect attended. On Tuesday, July 12, 2022,

Raymond Swash and Sandra Swash were arrested and have been charged. Both accused were members of the Banfield Memorial Church in North York. Raymond Swash held a position as a Youth Pastor and a Youth Leader at the church during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Investigators believe the two accused may have been involved with several church groups in York Region, Hamilton and Niagara Region and possibly other jurisdictions around Ontario. Images of the two accused
were released and any additional victims or witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist in the investigation, are urged to come forward. A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence. The investigation is ongoing. Nominations for NPCA Award of Merit open At its 31st annual Conservation Awards this September, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) will celebrate the accomplishments of hundreds of volunteers who give of their time, energy, and resources to make the Niagara Peninsula watershed a better place to live. The pandemic made volunteering difficult in many ways, but volunteers remained engaged while assisting with NPCA’s cultural heritage and outdoor education programs, and community stewardship and citizen science initiatives. Between 2020 and 2021,
the NPCA worked with 652 active volunteers, who logged a total of 12,681 hours, and helped plant more than 8,865 trees and 10,584 native wildflowers. “Our volunteers and partners are the heart and soul of our programs, events and our communities,” says Kerry Royer, NPCA community outreach and volunteer coordinator. “Recognizing their significant efforts has always been important to us and we pride ourselves in the unique and meaningful celebration that is our annual Conservation Awards. While we were unable to host this event in
2021, we look forward to getting together again to celebrate in the way our volunteers and partners truly deserve.” To celebrate, the NPCA invites all to become involved in this recognition process by nominating conservation heroes who have made an impact to receive an Award of Merit. The nomination form, criteria and rules can be found on the Get Involved NPCA portal. There is no established limit on the number of awards to be presented, allowing for flexibility of recognition. Nomination deadline is Aug. 5 at 12 p.m.

Cave Springs undergoes renovation program Cave Springs Conservation Area is undergoing a significant construction project meant to enhance the experience for visitors. The scope of the project will include a new parking area, an improved 400-metre accessible trail, a new trail system intended to complement the Bruce Trail and educational signage along the trails. “When the pandemic hit and things shut down, we saw a massive increase in visita-
tion to a lot of these conservation areas, with Cave Springs being one of them,” said Adam Christie, director of conservation areas for the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA). “It’s an exciting project to support the boardwalks and trails that have seen much more use than they were used to.” Currently, the Cave Springs area can only be accessed by the Bruce Trail. Educational signage along the trails will include information about the site’s natural, geological and cultural heritage. Local and Indigenous histories will also be included in the signage. The late Margaret Reed, who donated the property which is now Cave Springs, will be recognized in the area.

Scoffing at learning puts our culture back hundreds of years. We need more, not less in this lost, wandering planet that is still trying to understand its purpose. The little ball of yarn may be starting to unravel, but it can be rewound more carefully, more wisely. Let’s get at it!

Motorcycle ride supports Give Back Hope Project Kick stands will go up Saturday, August 13 launching the largest motorcycle ride and party of the summer to raise funds for the Giving Back Hope Project. Organizer Mike Cherwaty expects upwards of 200 motorcycle riders will join the daytime ride and all the stops are out for a party to follow in Beamsville with five live bands, licensed beer/liquor tent, food trucks, ice cream truck, silent auction, 50/50, and entry ticket draws for major prizes. Excited parents...and why not We had some excited parents in the office this week as they came by to pick up extra copies for family because their daughters - who are students at Niagara Dance and Fitness Studio in Beamsville - earned a spot on a Team Canada dance squad which will go to compete in Egypt of all places. Incidents like that don’t happen every day. In fact, they happen once in a lifetime. The dancers - Addison Gray, Ava Seca, Natalie Alford, Helene Lemmen and Julianna Watt will look back on this as an adventure of a lifetime...and it is stories like that which we love to tell. It’s what makes this little paper your paper, good reader, nobody else’s. M.W.
You can’t make this stuff up Just once, it would be really intriguing if George Lucas could Jedi-mind trick us all into a universe where Coun. Kevin Ritchie had to sit as a councillor while he himself also chaired the meeting. Between Points of Order from the council seat and having a chair introduce information and documents irrelevant and not included in an Integrity Commissioner report as well as offering ongoing debate points, I think Ritchie The Chair and Ritchie The Councillor would end up in the parking lot. Ritchie found himself in the chair for Monday’s special council meeting called to deal with the 44-page Integrity Commissioner report filed by Michael Maynard. Mayor Jeff Jordan stepped down from the chair to bring a motion suggesting a 90-day suspension, which was reduced to 15-days and approved in the end. The meeting was chaotic with dozens of Sharpe supporters cutting off speakers, shouting down comments, sustained applause when someone said something they liked. There was no control - and that is not to blame Ritchie on that point. Recent history has shown there is no control, no rules to be followed for the “overpass set”. But no doubt, if Ritchie was in his council seat he would have been critical of the mayor for not controlling things better, so fair is fair, yes?
MIKE WILLISCRAFT The best example of Ritchie wasting council’s time was when he read from a document he admitted knowing Maynard had not read, so not only was it irrelevent to the complaint consideration, but the IC could not comment on it one way or the other having not read it. It was merely a point Ritchie wanted to introduce to support his vote in favour of letting Sharpe walk. That is what you call engaging in a debate, nothing clarified there. But that wasn’t the best aspect of Monday’s circus. My personal fave was John Dunstall’s justification for voting in favour of letting Sharpe off after he followed through on what Sharpe did in Ottawa was not illegal in itself - nobody ever said it was. “Was he doing anything, oh, other than obstructing the residents and the commerce that was going on there, but I think he did give some commerce there,” said Dunstall. Oh ya, just the little matter of obstructing other’s
freedoms by blocking public roadways for weeks on end...nothing to see here I guess, eh John? C’mon man! That may be the silliest thing Dunstall has uttered since his Hall of Fame comment in fall of 2018 when he trumpeted those responsible for the biodiogester were “pioneers” and deserved kudos. Same theme I guess. The boys were stimulating the economy by blowing $19 or so million of the Town’s money out the door, so not all bad. You just cannot make this stuff up...and this guy wants to be mayor? The point of the proceeding was to deal with Sharpe and a long series of Code of Conduct infractions. The fact he forwarded an email addressed to council to a Facebook group was not dealt with specifically because Sharpe refused to cooperate with Maynard - another Code of Conduct breach - so an investigation on that could not be completed. What the Vaine, Dunstall and Ritchie trio could not get into their brains was the Code of Conduct is not law. It is not the Canadian Constitution. It is not the Criminal Code of Canada. It is a simple, common sense-based document which holds elected officials to a higher standard - basic common sense if you will, but it’s clear that group has none. It’s just 95 days to the Oct. 24 municipal election.
