Grand Oak designated as first heritage tree in Lincoln By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow A magnificent oak tree in Vineland has received distinction as a living piece of Lincoln’s history. The Grand Oak tree, a visual and ecological anchor in the community for upwards of 450 years, has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage and value. “Today’s designation marks an important milestone, as the Grand Oak becomes the first heritage tree of its kind to be formally designated in the Town of Lincoln, recognizing its significance as a valued part of our community’s cultural heritage,” Scott Foster, chair of the Lincoln Heritage Advisory Committee, told a crowd gathered Wednesday under the shade of the tree rooted securely on the property of JanWillem and Jane Stulp, owners of the Grand Oak Culinary Market
located at 4600 Victoria Ave. “Heritage is about more than preserving the past,” said Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. “It is about creating a sense of belonging and ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to experience the places and features that make our community special.” The designation represents the importance of stewardship Easton said, thanking “the invaluable work of our Heritage Advisory Committee” and “Chef Jan and his wife Jane” for their commitment to preserving a significant piece of Lincoln’s history. Local naturalist/environmentalist Carla Carlson wrote a poetic piece that spoke to the beauty and resilience of the majestic tree. “You hold the whispers of moccasins, horse hooves clopping, wagons squeaking, stagecoach wheels rattling, the a-Hooo-ga, aHooo-ga of the first Winton car.

Jane said people come from all over to sit in the shade under the branches. It was in fact how the popular restaurant and market first got its name when it was owned by Mike Culp. One of the oldest documented white oaks in the region, “the tree serves as a reminder that heritage is not only found in buildings, monuments and historic sites – it is also found in the land-
scapes that surround us and the natural features that have witnessed generations of change,” Foster said. The tree stands within the historic “Twenty” settlement area, a landscape shaped by Indigenous presence and stewardship, and later by the arrival of Pennsylvania German and Mennonite settlers who established farms and communities throughout the region. “ Assessed by Rui Feliz, Certified Arborist from ERA Architects, the tree is in good structural condition and overall health, measures approximately 160.5 cm in trunk diameter, has a crown spread of about 26 metres, and a trunk base roughly three metres in diameter. It carries significant physical, historical, associative and contextual value as an increasingly rare old-growth white oak in southern Ontario.

First of all, no city that I know creates a truck route through a residential area. Grimsby, over the years, approved new housing on Bartlett south of Main street and a proposed small apartment or condo across the street. In addition, they approved three large nursing homes between the South Service Road and Main Street that are already an issue in regards to seniors not being able to make the lights in the allotted time while out walking.
Adding commercial trucks to this would be a total disaster. If Grimsby wanted to turn the street into a truck route they should never have approved those houses and retirement homes in the first place. A better idea, cheaper and easier, would be to widen and rebuild Mountain Street. The town would need to expropriate some property
If we closed a road because we had an accident, we would have to close every road including the QEW. The answer is to fix the road. Growing up in Hamilton, I heard about constant accidents on Hwy. 20 coming down the escarpment. Nobody shut that down, they just fixed the problem. Klaus Zabel Grimsby

Theresa Jongerden, 95, died peacefully July 7 at Albright Manor in Beamsville. Born “Trijntje” in Bellingwolde, Groningen, The Netherlands to Harm and Zwaantje Vieregge, youngest of 12 children; survivor of WWII and the tuberculosis that took four of her siblings. Theresa was the matriarch to a large family, the last member of the four couples who came in the 1950’s to start a new life in Canada. To Dutch relations she was Tante Trijnie, to nieces and nephews in Canada she was Aunt Tracia. Married 49 years to Gerry, she was mother to their three children, Harry (Verna), Diane, & Roger (Helene); grandmother to Janice, Andrew, Nat, Joshua, Roger Jr. & Kayla; Oma to 11 great-grandchildren; and foster mother to almost 150 children through many years of Children’s Aid group home fostering. The Hamilton Children’s Aid Society used her name on billboards in a marketing campaign, “What’s so special about Gerry and Theresa Jongerden?” Fiercely supportive and loyal, but also forthright in giving advice to family members, Theresa was at the centre of what family jokingly called the “Grandma Grapevine”. Loyalty to family was extended to friends and pets as well. Oh what bliss to be a dog or a cat in Theresa’s home! She will be missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. Funeral service has been held at Mountainview Christian Reformed Church, Grimsby on July 12. For over 70 years Theresa was active in her church community. Strengthened by her faith in God, she bravely faced her final days knowing she would soon be in the arms of Jesus.

We celebrate the life and honour the memory of Guy Macri, who passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. Born to George and Mary (Nasso) Macri in Kitchener on January 16, 1942, Guy’s lifelong passion for creativity and knowledge guided his path early on. After studying drama at Brock University, he discovered his true calling in the classroom. He pursued his Masters and dedicated 35 years to shaping young minds as a teacher in the Hamilton community. He began teaching at St. Eugene’s School and went on to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Elementary School where he spent most of his career. Known for his firm yet deeply caring teaching style, he challenged his students because he truly cared about their future, leaving a lasting, positive impression on generations of students who fondly remember the impact “Mr. Macri” had on their lives. Beyond the classroom, Guy found immense joy in the opera and theatre, passions that he loved to share with those around him. A man of strong convictions, he believed fiercely in the importance of community, art, and culture, generously giving his time to local politics and charities. He was a devoted son, a faithful brother, and a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews including George and Daniella, who grew up next door and whom he treated like his own children, taking immense pride in them. His pride extended to his family in California, remembering fondly the summers his nephew would spend working on the farm as a teenager and the regular visits from the whole family thereafter. He valued the enduring support shown to both his parents and to him right until his final days. Guy is reunited in peace with his parents, his siblings Theresa McIntyre (Ray), James Macri and Tony Macri, and his beloved furry companion, Cassius. He is survived by his sister Rosemary, sisters-in-law Angela and Mary, and his many cherished nieces and nephews. He will also be fondly remembered by his cousins, extended family and a circle of close friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church (934 Highway 8, Stoney Creek). Following the mass, the interment will take place at Vineland Cemetery (4025 Martin Road, Vineland). Family and friends are warmly invited to gather immediately following the burial to share stories and remember Guy at the Tallman Fireside Room in Vineland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made with gratitude to the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation for the exceptional compassion and care they showed him, or to a charity of choice. Considered opinion Quite a few letters have been received on the escarpment crossing at Bartlett Avenue in Grimsby access. The vast majority agree that is the best spot, a point made on this page several times, so that is why a spot on Page 11 was used for a dissenting opinion. That Letter to the Editor touches on all points made in different submissions in the last couple of weeks - residential build-up, seniors homes nearby and pedestrian traffic. What lets the air out of the balloon is when writers point to Mountain Street and say that would be better, save for the fact it goes through the heart of town and the grade is too steep, sure. What is not understood is how anyone could still be surprised Bartlett is the best route. The four-lane access from the QEW has been in place for half-a-century. Anything bought, built or considered would have to had known that access being built is a very likely possibility. It’s not even caveat emptor, buyer beware. It’s buyer should have known. M.W.
Print content is still king I had the opportunity last week to sit in on a social media webinar given by one of the top U.S. experts on the topic who works out of Portland, Oregon. He mainly tracks media buys and shopping habits all through the U.S, northwest, but does regular, extensive national surveys which he uses as a basis for presentations at newspaper (and other media) conferences in Canada and the U.S. Still, I really don’t pay any attention to social media as far as it being a marketing concern in Niagara West due to its fractional impact. By that I mean there are a handful of businesses which gain any level of significant traction through social media ads - whether it be on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or anything else - but the impact is not a needle mover. That was not a shock to hear. What was a surprise to hear was his current assessment of print marketing both in terms of market share and results. Print, dollar for dollar, is still the most effective advertising dollar. That was good to hear. And, in Ontario, that impact is greater as this province has the highest readership among weeklies at 84 per cent of homes reading each edition. Digital does come into play there as 24 per cent of weekly readership is a combination of print, computer, tablet and phone, so readers want their “real” news and are happy to source it in a variety of ways.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT As a newsman, I just want people to have the correct, accurate news. How they obtain that news - whether it be our print or online edition - I do not have a preference. When people read the paper, they will see that ads. When people see the ads, if price point and/or timing is good, advertisers get a response. That is what makes the marketing world go around. If you don’t get a response, you are wasting your money - whether it be $1 or $100. I tell every advertiser we have, your ad in our pages should be an investment, not an expense. That is why running a consistent and well-planned program is so important to success. Different businesses have different needs when it comes to “success”. But, good reader, you will see all shapes and sizes in our pages. Some, who supply a service of some kind, may run weekly to ensure they are front and centre when someone has a need. Others run seasonally or more concentrated, larger ads when they have something special going on. It takes all sorts really
and the key is to understand those needs and craft a plan that works. If it doesn’t work, time and money get wasted. Take a new business, for example; nearly every business which opens will give us a call at one point or another. Many inquire about a full page off the bat as they want impact and to get noticed. Unless they have a focused plan and an appropriate budget, I very rarely recommend a full page. Sure, putting on my publishing hat, I’d love to be booking full pages for new businesses, but that would create a one-and-done situation which is not good for a new business. They need to be in front of readers, consistently, so people get used to seeing the brand and/or the service they offer - so smaller, consistent marketing is the way to go, always, for small or new businesses. And that is why print still wins - according to recent surveys - as I heard last week. When readership is consistent, eyeballs on ads are consistent. That is the major leg up print has on social which is incredibly hit and miss. You can buy a social ad on any platform, and you get a pretty report back that says you got X number of views, but all that means is it showed up on a feed at some point. It does not mean any saw it, read it or interacted with it. So it is hit and miss consistently. Newspaper, if your content is trusted, relevant, local and interesting, will get read. Grimsby, Smithville Legions celebrate 100th The Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with the official date being marked on July 17 - and Grimsby and Smithville will follow last weekend’s Beamsville party with events of their own this weekend. Smithville’s event goes Friday night, July 17. Key features of their event, said Smithville Legion president Karen Kemp, will be a cannon built by Clifford Travis - dedicaton at 4 p.m. A fish fry will follow from 5-7 p.m. and the Hammertone Band will entertain in the new band shelter from staring at 6 p.m. - weather permitting. Grimsby Legion will also host their event on Friday, July 17 from 3-11 p.m. with free food, games, prizes and the MJD Band providing some tunes.
