Town rejects FOI request By Joanne McDonald NewsNow The Town of Grimsby has decided to “deny access in full” regarding NewsNow’s request for release of the investigative report dealing with alleged staff complaints about CAO Harry Schlange. The complaint was initially filed June 12 and clerk Sarah Kim had informed NewsNow in a June 15 letter that a delay would ensue due to COVID-19 impacts. “Therefore, although we will try our best to process the requests in a timely manner, it will take longer than usual,” wrote Kim. A Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing spokesman noted the emergency Act cited by the Town allowing delays did not apply at the municipal level. The Town’s response came three weeks later. “A search has been conducted and the responsive record has been reviewed. Ontario Street Beamsville getting “Bench-ed” By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A long-vacant lot on Ontario Street in Beamsville will soon be filled in with new condos and commercial space after last Wednesday’s official groundbreaking for Bench Condos. The three-storey building will fill in the lot adjancent to what was most recently Lincoln Design House and was Elves Flooring for many years. Lincoln Design House owners, who are developing the property in partnership with builder Lanca Contracting Ltd., said they’re glad to see the project hitting the construction stage. “This project took some time but we had to make sure that it was just right.
We are proud and excited to be the first condo project on Ontario Street. To finally see the wheels in motion and the building come down (the old flooring shop) was bitter sweet,” said Dave Smith, who bought Elves Flooring in 2015 along with his wife, Tracy. “We were blessed with such an amazing opportunity back in 2015 when we decided to grow the Lincoln Flooring & Design business. We never imagined that this property would amount to a condo project with walk-up retail space on ground level. We are looking forward to seeing this building erected from the ground up. We are so happy to be a part of making Ontario Street beautiful.” From the municipality’s point of view,
Mayor Sandra Easton said the project fits right into what the Town is looking to do in the Ontario Street corridor. “I was happy to see this project move forward. Ontario Street is really evolving, and I look forward to more changes in the future,” said Easton. “Everything is coming together with GO and mixed use developments like Bench Condos. I’d like to see developments like this begin to change the conversation and make what may have been simply a truck route, evolve to a more compatible, walkable, safe and active transportation corridor. Grimsby DIA prepares for July 25 Big Spend As the province inches along to varying states of re-opening, Grimsby’s Downtown Improvement Area Board is gearing up for The Big Spend. The event started as a Facebook driven event to help generate some revenue for local economies. “I saw that on Facebook and thought it would be a good fit for us,” said DIA board member Mary Jo Clements, who brought
up the idea at the board’s meeting July 10. Visitors to partipating downtown shops will see The Big Spend window stickers, too. “Local small businesses make our communities run. They support community events and sponsor sports teams. They also provide nearly 70 per cent of all private sector jobs in Canada,” notes the promotion’s base website:

Team Super Jacob bottle drive sees heroic turnout from community They might not be found in the pages of comic books, but the volunteers and donors who came out to support Team Super Jacob’s bottle drive really are superheroes. Cars packed the Lincoln Centre parking lot Saturday to unload their cargo of empty bottles and cans in a “drive through” set up to help raise funds for the Niagara Children’s Centre (NCC). “We were just overwhelmed with the cars that kept coming despite the
rain,” said event organizer Nancy Hermans. The total was still being counted at press time. The charity event, led by six yearold Jacob Hermans was a thank you to the NCC, for supports to the Herman family since Jacob’s autism diagnosis. Brandt Tractor making a difference at WLMH The acquisition of new, technologically advanced operating room equipment for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital got a nice boost earlier this month thanks to Brandt Tractor. Bart Brooks, southwestern Ontario division manager of Brandt Tractor Ltd. presented Kevin Antonides, chair of the WLMH Foundation with a $5,000 donation in support of WLMH’s operating room equipment needs. Brandt Tractor designated their gift to the C-arm and fluoroscopy table project. The C-shaped xray arm which provides real-time imaging during surgery - at a project cost of $316,000 - is the goal. “The WLMH Foundation is grateful to Brandt Tractor for their donation and we sincerely appreciate the community’s continued support of the

The son of the late William and Doloris (Doucette) Cobham he was the youngest of 10 children survived by Billy Cobham (Susan), Anita Mangos (Peter), Patricia Black, Phyllis Jones (Bill), Norma Black David Cobham (Mary), Leslie Cobham (Astrida), Gerry Cobham (Crystal), and Jim Cobham (Bernie). He will be greatly missed by his mother-in-law Veronica McGrath, her friend, her son and her bingo partner, and by all the McGrath‘s who always treated him as a brother, and Lyndsy Cobham who he treated as his own. He now joins his father-in-law Michael McGrath whom he loved so much. It was his last wish to put his feet on PEI where he spent endless summers enjoying family, fishing, and his heritage, right up until his last days. Kevin was always the life of the party and brought so much joy and laughter to everyone he encountered. Words cannot express the love and support we have received from friends and family in Grimsby where we have spent the last 32 years, and to everyone in PEI and surrounding areas. Special thanks to Dr. Khoo and Diana. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Light at tunnel’s end better come soon Forgive me. I will say right off the top, I am not in a happy mood today (this week). It’s been pretty darn near impossible to keep an optimistic outlook when economic gloom keeps slapping one in the face. It is sad. It is frustrating. It is crushing, quite honestly. Monday was a topper for me. I don’t plan anything, not even a phone call for Mondays and Tuesdays - when we are in varying stages of production for our press deadline. Aside from juggling stories and ads, it just plain takes a lot of concentration to keep from utterly embarrassing myself with errors. A couple of weeks ago was a prime example when I tried to mix in a chunk of time on a Tuesday to get a Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area promotion teed up. A couple hours worth of research and developing a report with a bunch of emails mixed in took my eye off the ball and I made a stupid error. This week, just plain time pressure necessitated an outdoor meeting of Town of Grimsby officials and restaurant operators who have had significant communication issues with the Town. Yes, deadline loomed but so do financial pressures which are at the point of costing people their businesses so, rock...meet hard place. The patio extension has been frustrating on many levels with an absolute ton of misinformation hanging about the community. That aside, the mixed message from the Town is a headshaker to be sure. Now, Monday’s meeting was to nip that in the bud and get all on the same page.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT So that is always a good thing. However it was most perplexing hearing, directly and unfiltered, the rationale for some of the measures being enforced this year, The Year of COVID, when municipalities around the world are moving mountains to help....we’re getting chapter and verse of bylaws. Now, nobody is looking to infringe on bylaws, but a prime example is the space needed for handicapped access on sidewalks. The Town “wants” two metres, but 1.5 metres is the rule. So instead of working with restaurants, at least some, and giving them max space for patios at 1.5 metres they have been sticking to two metres. That may not seem like much, but it if means two tables more available every day of patio season for the same cash outlay, yes, it would ad up. That is just one point and I don’t mean to nitpick. Everybody is sick and tired of this COVID bull-pucky. No question. The people who can sit back and say, “Ya, Ford was right to hold off on Stage 3 for Niagara” simply are not the people with their head in an economic vise. Niagara should have gone to Stage 3 on Monday plain and simple. This is life. We’re a society of grown ups. Millions of people have paid “the price” in many ways.
When there is just over two dozen active cases in all of Niagara and another two weeks of having their businesses closed means extinction, yes, that is too much. Nobody is saying be reckless. If you want to go with the mandatory mask program - which makes far less sense now than it would have four months ago - sure, go for it. Monday, between an hour walkaround meeting and the subsequent dozens of emails and lengthy phone conversations a solid five hours got eaten up quickly. The crux of Monday, aside from vastly improving communications with the Town and businesses, was to iron out a possible patio extension plan with restaurants having use of the full sidewalk area with pedestrians shifting to blocked off parking spaces on the north side of Main Street. That is a very simple explanation, but the heart of it. The hope is this gives the four Main Street eateries an option to put in a patio or expand, while preserving as much on-street parking to maintain convenience for shoppers. Like all plans these days, there is lots of room for contingency and for businesses to opt in or out. Key for many, is the Town getting its insurance carrier to push back on a now-needed $5 million liability package upped from $2 million - just in time for The Summer of COVID. No way should the Town have permitted this at this time. Again, plain and simple. So there could be some light at the end of this dark tunnel. I have to hope so, but I also hope a lot of my friends and long-time business acquaintances will still be around to appreciate it including me.

The Town of Grimsby is looking to provide kids with fun, active and safe activities through its summer camp program. The Town is offering three camps this year: Camp Mikinawk daycamp for kids ages 7 to 13, Sports Camp for kids ages 7-12 and Junior Mikinawk for kids ages 5 to 6. These camps will run in weekly segments every week from July 13 to September 4. Registration costs $184 per week of camp. Kids will be further divided by age into cohort of no more than ten, including camp leaders. Activities will take place near locations chosen to ensure there is adequate, climate controlled space for each cohort. In the case of extreme heat or inclement weather, activities will move indoors, however the camps will operate outside as much as possible to reduce the risk of COVID-19. There will be no large, close-quarters activities, and many are designed to help children be aware of social distancing.
