Province antes $16 million for Peach King expansion By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It may have come as a surprise to many, but last Thursday’s announcement of a $16 million grant for the expansion of Grimsby’s Peach King Centre was the result of many months of planning and effort. The total cost of the project will be about $22 million, with Grimsby paying $5.84 million towards the total. Kinga Surma, Ontario’s minister of infrastructure, came to town with a truck load of cash to announce the project. “I think it is a very key,
very important investment especially coming out of COVID - to give something back to the people, so they can exercise and be healthy. It’s also good for mental health,” said Surma during a podcast recorded at NewsNow’s office. Among the upgrades and added amenities which will be part of the project are: • Full-sized gym • In-door walking track • Multi-use space • Fitness Centre • Youth Centre • EarlyON Centre • Rooftop outdoor recreation space

• Culture area • Dressing room improvements • Parking lot upgrades At Monday’s council meeting Mayor Jeff Jordan noted the project will cover off nine of 10 recommendations which were included in the Town’s recreation Master Plan. For Sarah Sweeney, Grimsby’s director of parks, recreation and culture, seeing life breathed into the project meant a great deal. “It was a bit of an overwhelming day for me that I actually found quite emotional. I have been advocating for this type of project for quite some time, and the potential I see just gets me so excited,” said Sweeney. For Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, he’s glad to see grants flowing into the area. “Coming into this area, we haven’t seen the amount of investment that was needed, especially as we’ve seen huge growth in our population in West Niagara,” said Oosterhoff during NewsNow’s podcast. Sweeney noted there is still a great deal of work to do in terms of nailing down design, adding the public will be kept up to date at all turns.

Dunstall rehashes deleting agenda items By Mike Williscraft NewsNow After an intense debate and subsequent approval of a motion at Grimsby’s June 21 committee of the whole meeting, Coun. John Dunstall pushed again Monday night to keep the bar to delete agenda items at a simple majority. The matter first arose when Dunstall moved to delete five items from an agenda, including a public delegation presentation from a taxpayer. The move set off a lengthy discussion with the motives of some coun-
cillors being called into question. In the end, council voted 6-2 to adjust the procedural bylaw to require a two-thirds majority vote to delete agenda items. Monday night, Dunstall noted he was absent from that council session and he wanted to take another run at the topic. “A majority vote would be adequate and having a two-thirds majority on having an item deleted from an agenda is like it is a reconsideration. Kevin Ritchie supported Dunstall’s view noting that he believes an item brought to council should be considered even if it is deleted from the agenda before any debate or review. That view did not sit well with other mem-
bers of council. “Once again, we’re talking about democracy. We’re talking about all voices being heard. As I have said before, almost all of our votes are split 5-4, which means nearly half of the voice of council can be preempted,” said Coun. Lianne Vardy. “To do this is just a power move to control the agenda by certain members that don’t want to pay the re-
spect to all of the residents in Grimsby.” After more finger pointing and offensive comments, council voted 6-3 to endorse the COTW motion to require a two-thirds majority to delete agenda items. Voting in favour were Councillors Vardy, Dorothy Bothwell, Reg Freake, Dave Kadwell, Dave Sharpe and Mayor Jeff Jordan. Opposed were Councillors Ritchie, Dunstall and Randy Vaine.
Three more IC complaints tabled Grimsby’s Integrity Commissioner Michael Maynard released findings in three more complaints at Monday’s council meeting. A complaint from a member of the public regarding potential conflicts of interest for Coun. John Dunstall was found in favour of Dunstall with no conflict being found. A complaint by Coun. Dave Kadwell against Coun, Lianne Vardy, which had come to council before with a note it was out of the IC’s jurisdiction to give a finding came back again.
In the end, Maynard found in Vardy’s favour saying there was no breach of the code of conduct. A complaint by Coun. Dorothy Bothwell that Coun. Dave Sharpe failed to declare a conflict of interest on a tax write off in May for a property his parents owned was found valid, but minor. Sharpe noted to Maynard he was not aware of the conflict until it was noted by Bothwell and took steps to remedy the situation immediately. No penalty is to be issued.

The beach was closed on June 29 due to the presence of blue-green algae at the beach as well as in an outflow connected to the beach. As a result of high-water levels and isolated flooding events during the spring of 2017 and 2019, sections of the Town’s shoreline have deteriorated and eroded, resulting in significant damage to both the road surface and foundation. The Town is working to identify a longterm solution that is informed by this EA study. The EA study will be supplemented by community education and awareness materials that will inform residents in flood-prone areas about ways to minimize risk to their property.
Two public consultation events will be held at key milestones later in the study to provide an opportunity for the public to review and provide input to the Project Team. Notice of the public events will be advertised in local newspapers and sent to the project mailing list.
The Study The Town of Lincoln retained WSP Canada Inc. to undertake a Schedule ‘C’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) that will study improvements to the Shoreline Improvement Areas between Thirty Road and Martin Road, as shown in the key plan below. The study will identify and evaluate alternative solutions and determine a recommended plan to enhance resilience in the Town of Lincoln.

From the loving arms of an adoring family to the waiting arms of a Merciful Father, it is with profound awe that we bear witness to the transition of Pamela Darlene de Laat (nee Eisthen) on July 8th, 2021, in her 74th year. Beloved wife of the late Frank (2002), exalted mother of Cameron de Laat and Jennifer Putnins (Daniel), cherished grandmother to Jaina, humble daughter of David (1973) and Margaret (1998) Eisthen (nee Czinkota), daughter in law to Hendrik (1978) and Maria (2004) de Laat, dear sister of Warren Eisthen (Lavarre), and the late Marvin Eisthen (2011/ Irma) and Melvin Eisthen (2016), Pamela’s spirit and dedication to others is felt throughout the lives of her large extended family, and her friends and faith-filled colleagues near and far, survived or gone before. Never one for futile pursuit, it seems strange here to try and snare a word in one’s throat that might describe that most wildly untenable feeling of witnessing at close range someone so cherished succeed so thoroughly at transitioning to the next place. Grief as we know it is tempered in the knowledge that it is a shared state of being, one that we must all surrender to and embrace in our lifetimes, as we reckon within ourselves and with our Maker. To put a point on one’s purpose is perhaps to burst a bubble of joy that means only to rise on, take breeze and be a Way. It does not require words, it coaxes them and cradles them with gravity. Hers was a Way of humble, immutable service to her families of birth, of marriage and of her community; a way in truth and in light. A steadfast example of a way of virtue and pointed honesty, Pam will be greatly missed by those who knew and felt her fervent belief in a life of integrity in service to the Divine. Her family wishes to acknowledge with heartfelt thanks the kind stewardship of Dr Denise Marshall and the entire staff of McNally House Hospice in Grimsby, whose gentle compassion allowed for Pamela to pass peacefully surrounded by those who loved her dearly, and also to the great number of family, friends and colleagues that would gather or send words of encouragement as she lived her final days here on earth. Tell the real story The headline said “Non-racialized Canadians will be educated on systemic racism”. What the heck does that mean? What is non-racialized? If it means they are not racist, leave, then leave them alone. Apparently “non-racialized” middle-aged Canadians (between the ages of 30 and 44!) will be publicly educated at a cost of $3.3million. Well, don’t put any of my money into that! The whole problem is education to begin with. Never mind the people between the ages of 30 and 44. Start with students in Grade One. Teach them the real history of how Canada got started. Teach them about the people who were involved, both the original white settlers, the First Nations neighbours who helped them adjust to Canada’s environment, and the immigrants who came later from countries all over the world. Don’t gloss it over. Tell the bad parts as well as the good ones. Learning about our local history would help a lot. The Nelles family who came to Grimsby early in the game were closely associated with their First Nations friends. Back in New York State, both Hendrick Nelles and his eldest son Robert were

Hendrick was well-known for recovering white children who had been adopted into tribes by negotiating their release. In fact, his second wife was one of these children. When white families and First Nations alike left the new U.S.A. to come to Canada as Loyalists, the First Nations invited the Nelles, Young, Dochstader and Huff families to settle on First Nations land on the Grand River. They wanted to live peaceably with neighbours they could trust. Sadly, that trust has not been passed down to the present generations. Here in Grimsby, Chief Joseph Brant often visited Nelles Manor. His people were always welcome, and were often found in the kitchen, asleep in bunk beds provided for them. Trust and friendship won’t be recovered by spending money to change the minds of “middle-aged” adults. Start with the children, and give them a solid education based on unbiased facts. Put that $3.3 million into the education system.

Good things come... For anyone who has lived in Niagara West for 20 years or so, it is not a shock to be told this area got precious little in terms of support from the provincial government back during the McGuinty/Wynne regimes. There was no love lost between the Liberal leaders and Niagara West’s representative and PC leader for part of that run, Tim Hudak. Simply, they were not going to do Hudak any favours. In fact, just the opposite proved the case as Niagara West was consistently passed over for major projects. The Liberals bailed on the 1/3-1/3-1/3 funding program planned for the Fleming Centre. To MP Dean Allison’s credit, he saw that coming and had the feds set to deliver on the project no matter what. Now, with a change of political stripe as premier, the hospital is about to happen and a full overhaul at the Peach King Centre is about to go down. It has been feast or famine. Feasts are better. Picture says more than 1,000 words Gotta say, it is a tough ask for anyone to feel sympathetic toward anyone in the G5 these days but please, good reader - if you want to feel the pain many feel who have had to watch the goings on at Grimsby council - watch the 20 second or so clip from Monday’s meeting at the 1:22:35 mark. It is another snapshot of why the limitation put on the mayor by the G5 braintrust has hamstrung how council should operate and allows the inmates to run the prison...as it were. You can experience the greatness of the situation. I am not going to relive it. I have to drive by this accident on an all-too-regular basis, I don’t want to experience it again if I don’t have to. However, let’s just say, Coun. Dave Sharpe began to wander into some story about a dental hygienist somehow while trying to explain his oversight in noticing a financial conflict of interest he found himself in. It was minor. Anyone reading the Integrity Commissioner complaint or viewing the council meeting would surely have understood that. But Sharpe time and time again, through many comments and anecdotes wanted to make sure all knew he made a mistake, did his best to correct it after Coun. Dorothy Bothwell pointed it out, and it was a small issue. Yes, we got it! So when Mayor Jeff Jordan had seen and heard enough as we got the dental office analogy, he halted Sharpe’s veering from the topic and moved onto to Coun. John Dunstall (who, ironically just wanted to call the question as he had had enough as well). Well, of course, Sharpe doesn’t like being directed... not unlike a five-year-old who doesn’t want to go to bed. The wheels come right off. Again. What I would like for you

So at 1:22:51, let’s go around the horn of what you see on the youtube screen. Dunstall: Enough already. Jordan:, Again? Really? Coun. Randy Vaine: Vacant screen, similar impact of any input of late. Coun. Dorothy Bothwell: Oh, my! Coun. Lianne Vardy: We’ve seen this meltdown before. Coun. Reg Freake: C’mon, man! Coun. Kevin Ritchie: You go, Dave! Sharpe: Doing his Heat Miser impression from the old Christmas classic, “The Year Without a Santa Claus”. Integrity Commission Michael Maynard: They’re not paying me enough to sit through this. But Coun. Dave steals the show. Exhibiting all the classic signs of utter embarrassment and frustration, he tucks his head down, deep scalp rub, right on the edge of straight up plugging his ears. That right there is what everyone wants to do, but simply cannot. Council’s decisions, the policies they set, the taxpayer dollars they spend are simply too important to turn a blind eye to but it was clear, again on Monday, even those around the council Zoom table would have loved noth-
ing more than to hit mute on Sharpe and move on. It is easy to understand Sharpe’s interest in wanting to ensure the public knew there was nothing devious in his conflict error. It was an error of not doing his due diligence on an agenda item, but not something done to deceive and he did do what he could to mitigate things once he knew, so good on him for that. The mayor was correct at that point in the meeting, Sharpe was getting into seriously repetitive territory having made his point several times already to that point. Sharpe tried to make the point that the mayor cuts him off habitually and he does not do that to Vardy, for example. But if you dare to watch the entire proceeding, Vardy had started to make a comment, Ritchie noted she had already spoken twice as per procedural bylaw. Jordan cut her off and they moved on. There is no logic, collectively, with this bunch and nobody should expect any. After committee of the whole, in the fourth and final meeting of the night, Vaine attempted to explain how the minority four is more of a block than the G5. “Over 90 per cent of the time, four councillors vote together. Whereas the five, the Grimsby Five as they are called, only vote approximately 65 per cent of the time together. So, I think if we are going introduce statistics and start telling everyone how disappointed we are and whatever else, that’s a fact that should be known,” said Vaine. First, it is hilarious to picture Vaine sitting in front of his computer counting all the votes or going through minutes. Second, what matters is the key votes, major issues, hirings, firings, making information public. That is where the G5 dominate, unfortunately.
