Grimsby council greenlights bio civil suit By Mike Williscraft NewsNow After a closed session debate Monday night, Grimsby council has opted to proceed with a civil action against some of those involved Grimsby Energy’s biodigester project. The project, which went massively over its initial $3.5 million budget to exceed $15 million in costs before
it got running, has had a long and painful history of problems from the outset. In a recorded vote of 7-2, council agreed to proceed with litigation, according to the Town’s website. Voting in favour of proceeding were Mayor Jeff Jordan, Councillors Dorothy Bothwell, John Dunstall, Lianne Vardy, Reg Freake, Dave
Kadwell and Randy Vaine. The two councillors voting against proceeding with litigation were Kevin Ritchie and Dave Sharpe. Council has deliberated over the ongoing issues regarding its hydro companies since shortly after the newly elected slate took over last officially in December. Shortly after gaining access to records and
the small amount meeting minutes available, regular reports have been part of public meetings ever since. The decision to litigate was taken after extensive research and opinion sought from forensic accountants and lawyers was reviewed over several meetings. More information on this litigation will be published as it becomes public.

Pathstone pitches drop-in mental health clinic for Town of Lincoln

By Tristan Marks NewsNow A free, drop-in mental health counselling for youth and young families is one step closer to fruition in Lincoln. Lincoln’s General Business & Finance Committee passed a recommendation Monday to approve a partnership with Pathstone Mental Health and a grant them $20,000 to bring their ‘Hear & Now’ drop-in counselling to Lincoln. “I’m in total support,” said committee chair and Ward 4 Coun. Lynn Timmers. “We need this. We really need this.” Pathstone has been offering its ‘Hear & Now’ clinics for other Niagara municipalities with approvals
in Welland, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Fort Erie and Niagara Falls. The clinics take youth under 18 years old for immediate counselling with no appointments, fees or health card necessary. Kim Rossi, director of philanthropy at Pathstone Mental Health addressed the committee Monday. She spoke about the need to tackle the mental health crisis which affects one-infive children. “Seventy-two percent of mental health issues stem from childhood,” she said. She said that past statistics show Hear & Now clinics have brought immediate help to kids who would otherwise be stuck on a wait list or who nev-
er make an appointment in the first place. Ward 3 Coun. Mike Mikolic asked whether or not children needed to be accompanied by parent or guardian to access this service. According to Rossi, children as young as seven years old can request a session on their own. Pathstone has already been “scouting” some potential sites in Lincoln should council ultimately approve the partnership. She mentioned the Fleming Centre specifically as a site they were interested in to house a clinic. Coun. Timmers said that the centre “is a good location” since it is safe, central and a stop for the uLinc transportation system.

Sunset Music Series runs all summer Charles Daley Park is alive each Tuesday this summer with the sound of the Sunset Music Series. Each Tuesday this Summer the Rotary Band Shell hosts free music concerts. The music series, which enters its 10th season, is made possible by the Rotary Club of Lincoln. The Rotary Club has assembled a weekly line-up which features local musicians. Some highlights include St. Catharines-based singer-songwriter Mel Monaco who plays next Tuesday’s show (July 16). Return Sunset Series act Souljam will close out the season on Aug. 27. Also returning for the 2019 series is the Open Mic Night with the Jam Night Band on July 30. Anyone
looking to perform has until July 19 to sign-up online at sunsetmusicseries.ca This free, seasonlong concert series is only possible through community generosity. The Rotarians gather pay-what-you-can donations with a “bucket brigade” each concert night. Donations from community sponsors and partners also help keep the series running. Rotarian John Maynard said that any money raised beyond overhead costs will “go straight to the community”. He said the club wants to help support youth groups like FORT, in particular, this year. “This year we are challenging the audience to each give an extra dollar, up to $5,”
he said. Guests can also get food on site. There will be food vendors, including Butterballs Express with barbecue and the Eco-defenders with ice cream. Concert-goers can also listen in their car by tuning their radio to FM 90.1 while in the Charles Daley parking lot. The Lincoln Rotarians run two other yearly events along with the Sunset Music Series. They organize a charity golf tournament each Spring, and in the fall they will continue their annual Lamplighter play series. The Rotary Club of Lincoln meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:15 p.m. at Conversations Cafe in Beamsville.

Grimsby Garden Tour to explore town’s little patches of Eden By Tristan Marks NewsNow It is an undeniable fact: Grimsby has some creative gardeners. People across town have followed their inspiration to take trowel to dirt and tame the land. Many gardeners have even earned prestigious awards through their hard work. Eleven of these little patches of Eden will be on display during the Grimsby Garden Club’s Garden Tour this Saturday, July 13. Those interested might start with a quick pilgrimage up the mountain. OASIS ON WOOLVERTON For motorists on Woolverton Road near Mud Street it is nearly impossible to miss: a garden of colours and sturdy wood, all arranged around large pond. To walk through the garden path is to enter an almost selfcontained world. This is Liz Fuller’s ongoing magnum opus her rural oasis. “I’m all about colour,” Fuller said. Indeed, her garden contains annuals in all sorts of colours: reds, purples, blues and so on. Accenting this are many varieties of trees, such as maple and- newly added this year- colorado blue spruce. “Every year we add something,” she said. “It’s kind of like a work in progress.” Fuller said that she did not originally set out to build a garden. “It’s all been because of necessity,” she explained. The pond, which preceded the existence of the garden, became home to a number of muskrats who tunnelled into its banks. One day, these tunnels caused the ground beneath her husband Ryan’s tractor to collapse into the wa-
ter back in 2007. To keep the pests out, Fuller began what she called her “five year plan” to line the pond’s shores with hand-placed rocks. During this process she decided to beautify the area by planting flowers and laying mulch. From there began her continuously growing garden. “My five-year plan became a 12-year one,” she said. The Woolverton Road garden also makes use of a lot of recycled materials, including wine barrels, old farm equipment and wooden palettes. “We make use of a lot of recyclables out in the country,” Fuller said. “My husband even ‘MacGyvered’ the fountain in the pond.” Maintaining the garden is a day-long venture, she noted. The water pressure from her nearest spout cannot reach the front garden, so she learned to improvise. She fills an old water trough – a relic from the property’s time as a halfway house which stabled horses – and pulls it by tractor to the front of the house. She then completely submerges her watering cans in the tub before watering each plant by hand. When the watering cans empty, she repeats the process. Fuller said it can be a lot of hard work, but she added that it comes with reward. “Every so often we have people from the nearby church come by and ask to shoot their wedding photos here,” she said. “And last year I entered a garden contest on a whim and won for all of Canada.” The contest in question was put on by Communities in Bloom in partnership with Home Hardware. Andy Immigrated to Canada as a free spirted 18-year-old in 1960, Settling in Hamilton. He made friends easily and quickly adapted to his new country but did not actually become a citizen until 2012 a very proud moment for him! He was employed by Firestone Canada until the plant closure, then after purchasing our country property, he evolved into a genuine “land steward” by planting trees, harvesting trees, cutting firewood, and processing logs into boards with his sawmill. He built a shop and was a talented wood-worker. He was happiest with a piece of wood in his hands! He loved to “live off the land” and always had a huge vegetable garden to show for it! He was an avid golfer and skier and so enjoyed those times with family and friends. Watching CFL and NFL football was a fond past-time, as was enthusiastically supporting his grandkids’ sports activities. A heartfelt thanks are extended to Dr. R. Juergens and her team at JCC for giving us some extra time with Andy. Thanks also to our LHIN and Paramed nurses for their exceptional care. A funeral service took place at Smithville United Church, Smithville on Friday July 5th at 11am. A private family inurnment to followed. It will get worse before it gets better When people are making major life decisions – are we ready to sell our family home and down-size or do I take that job in Alberta and move my family out there – nobody wants to be rushed or pressured. Major decisions, although it can be frustrating, take time. Grimsby Council has been under the gun from the outset due to a grocery list of reasons which will not be relived here. The electorate was hopeful this new bunch to create a new and vital direction which had eluded the previously elected councils in recent years. Many have been waiting, toes tapping all the while, to see what these new whipper snappers will do (noting Dave Kadwell and John Dunstall as the only members not new to this council, with Jeff Jordan’s previous experience noted). Six of the nine around the table are brand spanking new. Yes, they show it, and some of it has been hard to watch. Nobody should be concerned about growing pains, though, given what the alternative was....and don’t forget that. The two major issues which have weighed down, slowed down and stuttered the movement on a host of initiatives in the Town have been the chief administrative officer hiring search and wading through reams of information regarding the biodigester debacle. The hiring committee did the heavy lifting to get things down to a short list of two what I am sure would be two stellar candidates and the Grimsby Energy Board - Delight Davoli, Jim Howden and Rob Hattin (who are all working for free) have done more than their share on the bio

Most councils, let alone new ones, may have only one major issue which demands intensive commitment and typically any council would have senior staff and/or councillors to help lead through the muck. Grimsby really does not. Timing and circumstance have worked against them in many respects, so I do give them a lot of rope as they try to figure things out. Monday was one major step as they agreed, in a 7-2 recorded vote, to proceed with a civil action regarding the management and dealings surrounding the biodigester project. All general community hostility aside, and it needs to be set aside, this could not have been an easy decision. Even the most hardened character would not take litigation lightly. It is a very serious matter and I would hope council weighed the facts of the situation, allowed the opinions of experts to permeate their collective brains and made their best, informed decision. That is all one can ask. It is very, very easy to fall into the camp of those who are simply out for a pound of flesh as some sort
of compensation for seeing millions of taxpayers dollars frittered away - including a major asset of the Town in its fibre optics company sold off for a fraction of its value with proceeds poured into floating the biodigester. The problems were extensive, obvious and compounding over a long period of time. Whether that constitutes some sort of negligence in the eyes of a court will be up to a judge and/or jury to decide. As noted in the space previously, that is how it should be if there is a case to pursue. If memory serves, it was the Mayor’s Breakfast in the Fall of 2016 when Rob Hattin showed up with a detailed spread sheet outlining the project would lose about $1 million per year. Team Biodigester laughed at the notion, quite literally. Nobody is laughing now or since. And it should be noted, Hattin’s numbers - conducted purely by researching the performance of other bio operations as nary a shovel had hit the ground in Grimsby at that point - were just shy of reality. And as this news sinks in, I recall the late Michael Rozender, whom this community owes a great debt and will never realize it, wrote a letter to the council of the day and this publication imploring a suspension of the project - not a halt - simply to have an independent business case done to determine the viability of moving forward. That fell on deaf ears and the project pushed on. There were many chances to right the wrongs that were happening. None were taken. Maybe litigation is the only way to allow the community to heal.
Reader: HHS will drive doctors away Dear Editor, I am a retired Registered Nurse and have worked my entire career in Ontario and California. Some of the hospitals did major renovations all while remaining open. It is just a matter of putting essential gasses in a portable building and rerouting it to the portion of the hospital remaining open. This was done at the Henderson years ago before it was renamed Jurvinski. If they close WLMH many staff will lose their jobs as no employer will keep an em-
Letters ployee on the payroll with no work to do. I fear losing my family physician as he gives anaesthetics in the OR, Maternity and assists in ICU, CCU and the ER. This will reduce his income along with other family physicians in the same roll. How does HHS expect these doctors to live on a reduced income? Then if these doctors leave the community because of their reduced income, some of us will need to find a family physician. Their
offices will close putting their staff out of work and their empty offices maybe boarded up and West Niagara may become a “ghost town”. The population is aging and we depend on our local hospital to attend our needs in the WLMH ER so we will not be delayed for treatment. If we have to travel to Hamilton or St. Catharines we may not be going home, and may spend the rest of our lives in hospital waiting for a nursing home bed, or die in the halls of the ER waiting for treatment. Konkle Creek rehab dribbling, not trickling Dear Editor, Trickling? Surely you mean dribbling? It has been a least six years since I have been able to walk down Konkle Creek, probably closer to eight. And this from a community that prides itself as a walking community? Sound like the WLMH rebuild? Completion depends on funding approval. That should be interesting. You may get council support from Wards 1 and 2, but from Wards 3 and 4? If I were a councillor in Wards 3 and 4 I would be hard pressed to support it.
Let’s assume it comes down to the deciding vote by the mayor. She doesn’t live in either Wards 1 or 2. Hmmm. I think we would have been better off selling the properties that back onto Konkle Creek for a buck and let the residents remediate. Might just as well leave it as is, butt ugly, a good match to the abomina-
tions being built across from Shoppers Drug Mart. Save money. No one can walk it. Resident complaints about walkers will not recur, and they can toss brush and grass clippings over their fences and no one will notice. And think of how less stressful this will be for council.
