Lincoln bylaw review set for Jan. 15 the Town, it divides land into various zone categories (i.e., residential, commercial, employment), and establishes what uses are permitted and where buildings can be located on a property. Information displays will be set up throughout the entire session. Staff will be able to answer any questions both before and after the presentation and Q&A session. The goal of these new bylaws is to bring zoning bylaw in Lincoln back “up to date with changes at the provincial level,” said Coun. Paul MacPherson, chair of Lincoln’s Planning

and Economic Development Committee. “Really, it comes down to the fact that our current bylaw is out of step with not only provincial policy but also our official plan,” said MacPherson. The councillor stressed that this meeting goes beyond just ongoing cannabis issues the town faces. “Cannabis certainly dominated discussion to date, and that’s only one part of it,” said MacPherson. “This covers the total, comprehensive zoning bylaw for Lincoln.” “This is a big item.”

The municipality has scheduled a public information session (PIS) for 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 15 at the Fleming Centre. This session will consist of a 20 minute presentation from town staff starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A session. The zoning bylaw is the Town’s primary tool to regulate the use of all land in

Peach Kings play at West Lincoln Arena Friday The Grimsby Jr. C Peach Kings will face off against the Niagara Falls River Hawks this Friday at the West Lincoln Arena in Smithville at 7:30 p.m. Peach Kings coowner Simon Duong said the team hopes to win fans in West Lincoln. “Last year we decided to do a couple of games outside of Grimsby to reach out to West Niagara,” said Duong. “We played a preseason game at the West Lincoln Arena this year.” “We’re hoping we’ll get a nice crowd from around Smithville.” The Peach Kings will also be honouring former owner Lyle Killins at Friday’s game.

Killins, a Smithville resident himself, owned the team in the 1990s and left a lasting impression on the team, said Duong. “He helped really turn things around and started things we’re still continuing today,” he explained. Killins will drop the puck at game start along with his four grandchildren. During the first intermission, the West Lincoln Wrath IP team will take to the ice for a quick practice. Kids wearing apparel from the Peach Kings, West Lincoln Wrath, West Niagara Flying Aces or Lincoln Blades can attend this game for free (with a limit of two kids per adult).

12th annual Grimsby Polar Bear Dip rings in new decade Grimsby residents bought the annual tradition of willingingly entering Lake Ontario’s chilly January waters into 2020 with the 12th annual Polar Bear Dip. As always, participants raised money through the event in support of McNally House. In total, this year’s dip raised $3,900 for the hospice.

“It was a blast,” said organizer Dave Munford. “Thanks again to my DOH, director of helping, and sonin-law, Sean McPhail.” As a follow-up to his ‘retirement’, Munford indicated that he has found a successor in running the event. “I’m happy to say Dr. Allison Zaruk has volunteered to take over the dip,” he said.

Men who take care of their wives and mothers with Alzheimer’s Disease understand the challenges the condition inflicts on their loved ones and themselves. Fortunately, they don’t have to fight alone. These husbands and sons in West Niagara have a new, free resource in the form of the Niagara Region Alzheimer Society’s Grimsby Men’s Support & Social Group. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month on the second floor of the Peach King Centre in Grimsby from 10-11:30 a.m. It provides a confidential space for men to share their struggles and support each other face-to-face. “We’re just a group of men who can talk and socialize about taking care of our loved ones with Alzheimer’s,” said group organizer Len Thornton. “We’ve got an amazing group.” Thornton first became involved with the Alzheimer Society after his wife was diagnosed with the illness. While attending a program offered by the Society’s St. Catharines, he noticed that the organization did

Levee rings in half century for Lincoln A large gathering of Lincoln residents congregated at the Fleming Centre in Beamsville for the town’s New Year’s Levee on Saturday, Jan. 4. This year’s event marked not only the beginning of a new decade, but also 50 years since Lincoln corporated. The levee featured many 50th anniversary activities, free skating on the Fleming Centre ice rink and local wine and beer. “Let us prevail as a healthy community 50 more years and beyond,” said Mayor Sandra Easton in her first speech of the New Year.

of Grimsby passed away peacefully at the Hamilton General Hospital on January 1, 2020, just shy of her 78th birthday. Beloved wife of John Dove. Cherished by John’s daughters Elizabeth Dove (Alex Djuric) and Catherine Dove (Kevin Ireland) and their children; Leila, Asher and Arielle. Joan will be remembered for her love of and service to community. An educator by vocation, Joan taught elementary school, adult education and was at Niagara College for 28 years where she was the Coordinator of the Sociology Department, Faculty President and member of the Board of Directors. As a social entrepreneur, with the partnership of her husband John, Joan founded Angelfest in Grimsby (now the Fantasy of Trees) as a way to bring the community together and to benefit local non-profits. That event was one of several community projects by Joan and John’s events incubator, Niagara Events, which also produced the Niagara Antiques Festival and the Niagara International Music Festival that exposed appreciative local audiences to numerous global choirs. She was on the Board of several local charities, was membership chair with the Niagara West-Glanbrook NDP riding, was a passionate advocate for environmental protection and was especially proud of her contributions while serving as a negotiator for contracts for all of the provincial college professors. A life long patron of the arts, Joan performed in Garden City Productions herself and delighted in experiencing musicals, galleries and the symphony. Genuinely curious about the experiences of others and an adventurer at heart, Joan traveled the world. She will be sincerely missed by all who loved her as she leaves us for this next voyage. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Hamilton General ICU East for their care and kindness during Joan’s sudden and brief illness. Toronto bound QEW closed overnight near Ontario St. after hit&run fatality

A hit and run accident in Toronto-bound QEW overnight Monday has claimed the life of a St. Catharines man. Ontario Provincial Police say the 28-yearold man was involved in a single vehicle accident with his white SUV about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. The man exited the vehicle which had come to rest in the centre median and he was subsequently struck by one or more vehicles, according to an OPP report. Police are looking for a Hyundai or Kia model car silver or gold in colour with some front-end damage. The man’s name was not released prior to deadline pending notification of next of kin. OPP were on the scene conducting its investigation until early afternoon Tuesday with QEW reopening about 1:30 p.m. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident can call Burlington OPP at 905-681-2511.

Key Lincoln meeting Wednesday It may not be the sexiest meeting, but next Wednesday’s meeting at Town of Lincoln regarding its zoning bylaw review is very important. The result of the bylaw review will form the foundation for virtually all aspects of planning within in the Town. Yes, any aspect the Town hopes to incorporate in fighting the cannabis grow issue will have its origins here. Commerical and residential zoning will also be part of the mix. The Public Information Session runs from 6-8 p.m. The formal meeting kicks off with a presentation from Town staff with Q&A to follow. This is your chance, residents of Lincoln, to have any level of input into the guidelines by which future decisions will be made, so take the opportunity, invest some time, and chip in your two cents if you care to do so. Team Troll lines up for misguided shots I’ve said it before and I am sure I’ll say it again at some point, but social media has absolutely no redeeming value, none, save for helping with an Amber Alert or some emergency, life-saving measure. The rest, the world would be a far better place without it. The internet should carry a percharacter charge and world hunger and money to cope with climate change could be funded in a week. A story I did last week on Hamilton Health Sciences where West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is concerned was retweeted by Premier Doug Ford. In marched the trolls. Some of the rhetoric was downright hilarious. Some was valid opinion. There are those who are worried about the stability of WLMH rebuild funding in the wake of the LRT program cancellation in Hamilton. How could one not be concerned. The question has been asked and answered many times of MPP Sam Oosterhoff and he has asked the same question internally. He is 100 per cent of the belief that funding is rock

The whole process has been held together with elastics and Band-Aids for 20-plus years so why, all of a sudden, should we give up on hope now? Back to our friends who live under the bridges of social media.....there was a whole line of tweets which proclaimed the Tories to be stealing the thunder of good ol’ Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals. Team Troll explained to all social media ears about how this process was started by Wynne and how dare Team Ford take credit for such an important plank in the Liberal platform. So let’s stop there for a moment, shall we. The boneheaded Liberals were NEVER going to build WLMH no matter how much it was merited as long as Wynne nemesis Tim Hudak was the MPP for the area. Never. My fave, courtesy of Ron @kellr2010: Started and funded by Kathleen Wynne. The Conservatives have not started or even proposed a single new hospital for Ontario. Ontario is surviving because of Wynne’s investment.”

Now, that’s a beauty! Our local health care sector got about as much investment in the last 10 years as our local high schools which were run into the ground by District School Board of Niagara to justify the new super school...which would be next to nothing for those keeping score at home. From that initial comment, another series of tweets spun off it, 20 or 25 slap a “like” on there and all of a sudden, it’s on the interweb, it must be true. Still a week later, “How many more announcements and press conferences can you squeeze out of this minor funding news?” - thanks @lindahaslett. Get a clue, would ya! Did you read the story. WLMH move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 with $1.5 million announced to help fund that part of the process. Both of those are brand new, never even dreamt of by Wynne on her best day. You wonder why local interests are pushing every single day and staying on top of the near-dormant HHS to inch the process further? Everyone knows, if the shovel is not in the ground and contracts signed before the next provincial election, the Liberals would kill the WLMH rebuild again in a heart beat. There is still lots of work to be done and it is appearing as though the needed timeline can be met. The Ministry of Health finally seems to have its guard up where HHS is concerned and is monitoring all on an ongoing basis. Good on them. To be clear, like it or not, if/when the WLMH rebuild happens it will be ALL Team Ford who should be thanked.
