Smithville resident to represent Canada/Niagara at World Championship By Jessica Barton For NewsNow The Niagara Nitros - and their quarterback Shiloh Ivory of Smithville - are heading to Mexico this week for the first NFL Flag Football Championships. The U14 division girls flag football team - coached by former professional football player and Shiloh’s
father, Cliff Ivory - went undefeated in its 2025 season. The club is set to represent Canada, adding to its impressive list of national titles already accumulated. Shiloh is no stranger to sports, having previously played soccer before moving on to football and basketball.
“What sparked me to play flag football is I watched my brother play, and it looked fun,” said Shiloh, 12. A student at Smithville Public School, gym is her favourite subject, which aligns with her athletic proclivities. Shiloh is certainly not the only girl to feel that way as
the team consists of girls from across Niagara and surrounding areas. There is no Smithville team, but that does not mean there aren’t opportunities to play. “It’s not just Niagara, but girls come from Burlington, Hamilton and different areas,” said Shiloh. The team, which rep-
resents Niagara Region, holds practices all around the area, including Beamsville, Welland, and Niagara Falls, allowing for traveling opportunities. The competition spans North America but there are only a handful locally. “There are hundreds in Canada, the U.S., and See FLAG, Page 3

Show goes on at Polar Bear Dip Cold wind and icy waters kept a few swimmers at bay New Year’s Day. Roughly 100 people came out to the annual Grimsby Polar Bear Dip on Thursday afternoon, nearly half the turnout from just a year ago, said lead organizer Gavin Lutz. The shoreline had been frozen over and the waters themselves were full of floating ice chunks when the swimmers arrived.
Still, the swim raised almost $3,500 for McNally House, a Grimsby-based hospice and the fundraiser’s beneficiary. Lutz and his family have been running the fundraiser for the last six years, having raised about $26,600. Some of the swimmers at Bal Harbour Park had been participating in the dip for several years already. Steven Dean said he’d been coming for

In 2025, the Town continued to support community organizations, celebrate volunteerism, and advance opportunities for learning, inclusion, and reconciliation. These efforts reflect the values that truly define Lincoln. One of the year’s most meaningful milestones was the opening of Sho’aríshon Park in the Jordan Hollow area. The park honours Indigenous heritage and creates opportunities for learning, reflection, and cultural connection within the community. I was humbled to receive the 2025 Indigenous Niagara Outstanding Achievement Award in the Two-Row Alliance category. The award recognizes leadership and commitment to building strong, re-
spectful relationships with Indigenous communities across Niagara. The Two-Row Alliance Award highlights continued efforts to advance Indigenous relations, including the creation of Sho’aríshon Park and the integration of Indigenous history and public art throughout Lincoln, most significantly in our Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre. In keeping with the values of reconciliation, the monetary award was donated to the Orange Shirt Society in honour of residential school survivors, their families, and communities. Public safety also remained a focus in 2025. Through continued truck safety blitzes and collaboration with Niagara Regional Police Service, Ministry of Transportation and other supporting agencies, enforcement efforts were increased on local roads and highways to address vehicles bypassing inspection stations and to improve roadway safety. Community generosity continued to shine through events such as
the Mayor’s 2025 Charity Golf Tournament, which raised $53,000 in net proceeds for local Lincoln charities – funds that directly support community groups and residents in need. Looking ahead, Council remains focused on planning responsibly for the future. This includes continued investment in infrastructure, preparation for growth, and sound decision-making that serves both current and future generations. Despite ongoing uncertainty in funding from senior levels of government, the Town continues to apply disciplined financial management. Council and Staff are committed to long-term financial sustainability and responsible stewardship of public assets while providing access to high-quality local services. None of the Town’s accomplishments would be possible without the dedication of residents, businesses, volunteers, community partners, and Town staff. Together, these efforts continue to make Lincoln a place to Grow, Prosper, and Belong.

After much public consultation, West Lincoln’s “Parks and Recreation Plan” and “Trails and Corridors Master Plan” have been completed and are ready for some initial implementation in the new year. Looking to 2026, we have initiated a “Road Safety Study and Action Plan” to try to combat residents’ concerns about public safety on Township roads. Work is being undertaken on the Sanitary Sewer Replacement along West St. and Wade Rd., partially paid for by the $4M successful provincial grant application announced in January/25. This work will continue well into 2026 with road and sidewalk improvements occuring. Also begun in 2025 and continuing into 2026 is the St. Ann’s Road project with road, sidewalk and bridge work included. Additionally, residents will be seeing work taking place along S.G. Rd. 5 as Marz Homes begins water/ wastewater preparation work along their property’s border. The 2026 Budget will be finalized this month with many road, water-sewer replace-
As 2025 comes to an end… I have always looked at the end of each year as a time for reflection, evaluation and appreciation of the past year, combined with an eagerness and anticipation of what the new year will bring. As Mayor of West Lincoln, I look back with pride at some highlights of this past year including the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital official opening, the successful hosting of the 2025 International Ploughing Match and West Lincoln’s first official Seniors Information and Active Living Fair, all occurring this past Fall! In 2025, our Council was pleased to see both the demolition of the old building and the full use of Fire Station #2 plus the delivery of our new “Made in Canada” Fire Truck to Station #1. The Public Works Department was the recipient of 2 new Tandem Dump Trucks/PlowUnits, a wide-area mower and an articulating mower for seasonal use in rural areas. Projects completed this past year include the Silverdale Hall siding, resurfacing
ment related projects set for 2026. New in 2025 and continuing into 2026, is the series of Developers’ Roundtable discussions and information-sharing sessions, led by our Growth and Sustainability staff. Along that same vein, as a result of a strong-mayor directive, staff have met with various-sized businesses including members of our agriculturally-related businesses to discuss concerns and to plan for future, mutually-beneficial cooperative steps moving forward. Council is poised to see applications for future building projects come forward during 2026. The afore-mentioned projects bode well for the future prosperity of West Lincoln… We have several newer, small and mid-sized businesses, we see expansion to some existing larger businesses, we are gradually seeing some homes in the process of being built and we have both a Council and a progressive, Staff Team interested in working cooperatively and collaboratively with all interested parties so as to benefit our community’s well-being. It is exciting to envision all that 2026 might hold for West Lincoln!

We installed 10 commemorative banners along Clarke Street to pay tribute to Grimsby’s veterans, celebrated youth creativity with the Holiday Card Contest, and connected local business leaders to share ideas and engage in meaningful dialogue with Council and Town staff with the Mayor’s Business Breakfast. The 40 Mile Creek pedestrian bridge has been restored and reopened the connections to Grimsby’s nature trails. The Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre has achieved major progress, expanding its
facilities for its grand opening this January. These are just a few examples of the amazing work that happened this year. With the list going on and on, it’s hard not to look toward the new year with optimism in how things will continue to improve in our town. A generous $7.1 million provincial grant has allowed us to make town-wide improvements to our wastewater systems for increased protection to our green areas while also allowing the approval of additional homes to be built. Our Asset Management Plan provides us a clear and data-driven roadmap to help the long-term financial sustainability of the community. Our Tourism Strategy has been endorsed, allowing us a path to strengthening the tourism economy. And progress has been made on Casablanca Boulevard’s reconstruction design to support the future GO Station that we will be housing. Thinking on all that we have accomplished this year, and the promise of what is to come in 2026, I would like to end this with a heartfelt thank you to all of our residents, partners, and community groups. You all made 2025 a truly unforgettable year for Grimsby and I can’t wait to celebrate the progress we will make next year.

Passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at Albright Manor in Beamsville, Ontario, at the age of 94. Born on May 26, 1931, in Kortezwaag, Friesland, Netherlands. He will be deeply missed by his wife Gerda (Valk), siblings Anne (Bill) and John, children Peter (Donna), Richard (Jennifer), David (Lesley), Sonya, Helen, and Lorraine, as well as his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Pre-deceased by his first wife Harmke (Langeraap), sister Geesje Grob, and brother Pieter Bakker. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service, in accordance with his wishes.

Glenda passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025 in her 90th year. She is survived by Jim, her husband of over 67 years, and her children Joni and Mike. A loving and devoted grandmother, Glenda is also survived by her grandchildren Dayna, Riley and Jack, and by her brother, Ron Moore. Glenda was born in Grimsby and lived her entire life here. She played softball and basketball in her younger years and was a master bowler for many years as an adult. Glenda’s passion for sports led her to coach and to be influential in the beginnings of women’s hockey in Grimsby in the early 1970s. Cremation has taken place. Notice of Public Meeting Affordable Housing Community Improvement Plan TAKE NOTICE that the Township of West Lincoln is undertaking a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) pursuant to Section 28 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.P.13 and invites all interested persons to attend the Statutory Public Meeting to obtain feedback and comments regarding the CIP, the proposed CIP Area, as well as the proposed incentive programs.

Monday, February 9, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. Township Administration, Council Chambers 318 Canborough Street, Smithville
Purpose of Effect
The Township of West Lincoln is proposing an Affordable Housing CIP. This Statutory Public Meeting is a way for you to offer input and to get involved. A copy of the draft CIP will be made available for public review and feedback on the project webpage at www.westlincoln.ca/affordablehousing-cip. Any person may attend the Public Meeting in person or electronically and make written and/or verbal representation either in support of or against the proposed CIP. Please contact the Clerk at clerk@westlincoln.ca for more information or to register to speak electronically before 4 p.m. on the day of the meeting. Public Meetings are live streamed on the Township YouTube channel for anyone who would like to observe.

Questions, comments and additional information regarding the Affordable Housing CIP and CIP Area may be requested by contacting Gerrit Boerema, Director, Growth and Sustainability, at gboerema@westlincoln.ca or 905-957-3346 ext. 5131. All information including opinions, presentations, reports, documentation, etc. provided for or at a Public Meeting are considered public records and may be posted on the Township website and/or made available to the public upon request.
Appeal Rights
If a person or public body would otherwise have an ability to appeal the decision of the Council of the Township of West Lincoln to the Ontario Land Tribunal but the person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Township before the CIP is adopted, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to Council of the Township of West Lincoln before the proposed CIP is adopted, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Land Tribunal unless, in the opinion of the Tribunal, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or public body as a party.

I don’t trust anything about that situation until it is a signed contract and I want to be able to choose a direction with certainty.
