Stage 2 funding great, but foot still on HHS gas, says Oosterhoff By Mike Williscraft NewsNow As important as West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s rebuild process advancing to Stage 2 of planning, so too, ensuring the facility has a full range of services is also key, says Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff. Noting the Ministry of Health has been committed to ensuring all services are maintained at WLMH, Oosterhoff said it was great to see HHS officials acknowledge this in commenting on the Stage 2 move. “It will be a full-service, general hospital with all the services needed to support that model,” said Oosterhoff on Monday. Last week, Dr Michael Stacey, HHS executive vice-president and chief medical executive said the new hospital will include inpatient services, an emergency department, maternal and newborn services, day surgical services, endoscopy, diagnostic services and ambulatory services. But to get to that point, Stage 2 must be executed and approved by the Ministry of Health to keep the process moving. “Our next step will include

development of a Functional Program for the new hospital which will include details about the programs and services in the new facility, as well as describing workload, equipment and operational processes. The Functional Program will also profile design and spatial requirements, a project budget, project schedule and the local share financial plan,” said Mary Siegner, HHS’s manager, stakeholder relations, communications and public affairs. Oosterhoff noted that he has heard a lot of positive comments in the community about getting to Stage 2, but he added that focusing and driving the process forward will continue full tilt. “People are happy and want to look to the future on this thing but I am keeping my focus on getting this through Stage 2,” said Oosterhoff. “HHS has already done some pre-planning on Stage 2 but we need to work quickly.” To that end, Oosterhoff noted he has a meeting planned with HHS’s chairman of the board, Charles Criminisi, next week.

NRP conduct Festive RIDE Niagara Regional Police continued their Festive R.I.D.E. Campaign by conducting sobriety check points at two locations within the Town of NiagaraOn-The-Lake and the Town of Grimsby last Friday, Dec. 27 Both of the locations were very busy and in total approximately 750 vehicles were stopped. Each driver was questioned if they had consumed any alcohol or cannabis prior to operating their vehicle.
Of the drivers spoken to, 14 were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. Three of the drivers provided a sample in the warning range and subsequently had their licence suspended for three days. As the festive season continues throughout the month of December, the Niagara Regional Police wanted the public to be aware that officers will be continually looking for impaired drivers. Whether it is a sched-
uled R.I.D.E. event or officers that are on general patrol, police will be attempting to locate and arrest those drivers who decide to operate their vehicle while impaired. If you are attending a social event this holiday season, please drink responsibly and have a plan to arrive home safely. Consider having a designated driver, call a taxi or use public transit. The Niagara Regional Police will continue to conduct R.I.D.E. checks each

At about 5 a.m., 8 District uniform officers received a call about an incident in the area of Sherwood Park - Main St. East/ Baker Road. Grimsby donated over 6,000 kg in food for GBF’s Christmas Hamper program this year. Thanks to these donations, which were largely gathered at the town’s Dec. 7 Santa Claus parade with help from the Grimsby Fire Department, the charity was able to deliver hampers to 230 individuals and families in the community. “Our community has provided an outstanding commitment to our services which has allowed us to be best in practice and support individuals and families requiring assistance this holiday season,” said GBF Executive Director Stacy Elia. The program was also made possible by the “hundreds of community members who volunteered their time and generosity” by helping sort out, pack and deliver the hampers from Dec. 12-14, said GBF Food Bank Manager Ashley Marr. She added that 6,000 kg in donated food was an increase from the previous year’s donations.

Christmas Tree collection will take place on regular collection days Jan. 6-10. Please place any trees at the end of the driveway by 7 a.m. Remove all Christmas decorations (bulbs, tinsel, lights, etc.) prior to collection.
Do not place Christmas trees on top of or inside a snow bank. This may cause injury to collection staff when trying to remove it. Do not place tree inside a bag, as it creates a problem when chipping the trees. Weather conditions may delay collection.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT the one thing I do plan for daily is time buffers. At least a half-hour is worked into every morning and afternoon to absorb unexpected visits or phone calls which inevitably pop up. That is certainly no complaint. Really, it is proof positive of why and how this little news rag keeps plugging along. We are accessible. I do take time when people need it. All of our people listen to the needs of our community - whether for a story or for an ad - and work with those who give us their time. It can be a little frustrating at times, but ALWAYS worth it. If I had to forecast something for 2020 for myself, I would say I need to plan those time buffers in my personal time, not just for the work day. I tend not to plan any time for myself. I just take what’s left and, for long periods of time, there simply is none. To rectify that, I did something on Saturday I have been meaning to do for a while. I dropped all of Rogers sports TV packages from my cable at home. I’ve been meaning to do that since their overreaction to the Don Cherry “you people” comment, but watching sports is just not
worth my time any more. I watch an occasional hockey game, so CBC is good for that. I will miss the Raptors most, no question. I used to love the NFL but officiating and over-governing there has killed it for me. Anyone who saw the end of Sunday’s Seahawks49ers game knows of what I speak. Quarterbacks can’t be touched. Receivers have their run of the place to help drive up scores. Simply, NFL is not a game I want to watch any more. And that is truly hard to believe for someone who used to spread out the London Free Press on the family room floor, scan every stat and commit them to memory before going to school so I would be up to speed with my high school buddies as I knew they would be doing the same. It would be rare for me to watch whole games in the first place, but even if you take three games in a week from any sport and add up half of the time for those games, I will add about four hours to my week just by eliminating them. So I guess that is my resolution, gone is watching extended sports coverage and use that time for something other than work. Sounds good! I know the sports part won’t be there, so that’s a strong start. Now I need to invest in some hiking boots/shoes, a basketball and root around in the basement for that tennis racket I am sure is there some place. That’ll be a start to get me out the door and doing some things I used to do all the time but have LONG been on the shelf. I think adding some of these activities will actually slow my 2020. Let’s see.

Such expression is also valuable to me as voter as it helps inform my voting decision. In order to avoid any future upset, the next time flyers with religious content show up in her mailbox I’d recommend that Ms. Borselino adopt the same perspective and thereby celebrate our valuable constitutional rights. As an Atheist and classical liberal I partly agree with Ms. Borselino that our current secular society no longer requires religious dogma to maintain our western values and morals. Dear Editor, I am writing this note as a response to Paula Borsellino’s letter that appeared in your December 19th edition. Ms. Borsellino speaks of her tolerance to various religions by wishing people Merry Christmas or other appropriate greetings as she becomes aware. However, it seems to me that her tolerance ends with those individuals that agree with her but does not extend to those who do not share her viewpoint or beliefs. Canada is a country that it’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms allows for the free expression of one’s religious views. If Mr. Oosterhoff chooses to express his religious beliefs in a Christmas greeting that is perfectly within his rights to do so. In the same way Mr. Trudeau expresses his belief on a regular basis of a women’s right to choose. That view is contrary to the religious views of millions of people in this country, however that is his right to express that view. There is significant divisiveness in our country on many issues and in this age of
