Music is the answer

Melody Minds rocks the house

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Call it the punk rock-inspired philosophy of being inclusive, being yourself and doing it with passion and energy. A lineup of bands from Melody Minds rocked the house at Teddy’s Sports Bar last week and it was a testament to the transformative power of music. Everybody wants to be in a band - and thanks to Joe DeLuca and Pat Kelly, Melody Minds makes it possible for people with intellectual disabilities and brain injuries to unleash their creative energy and talent. “Music is the answer,” says Evan Fiorella. “It’s awesome.” An integral member of the band and one of the originals, he

plays drums and percussion instruments. “It’s the joy of rocking out on the front lines, the stress of pre-gig jitters, the joy of a standing ovation,” says his dad Chris Calaguiro of the thrill his son gets onstage. And that’s what DeLuca and Kelly bring to so many since founding Melody Minds, a music and multimedia program based out of Grimsby. Whether it’s forming a band, selfpublishing a comic book, or researching, writing and performing in a video podcast, participants have the freedom to create with their professional support. Uniquely qualified – they’re both musicians, grew up performing in bands, and now both work as community rehabilitation support workers - they saw the need for fun, cool,

inclusive, age-appropriate music and interactive media programs for brain injury survivors and people with intellectual disabilities. Time and again, they met people who loved rock music, but where could they go to be in a band. Launching Melody Minds in 2019, “we thought we would create a space for people to do the real thing,” DeLuca said. “Typically we run an eight-week session,” DeLuca said. “We’ve seen band members just stay on after each block so we change up the songs, change up the goals. The longer you stay on, the more your band develops.” “We just love doing it. It’s the best thing, seeing the satisfaction and pride that the people in the band feel when they perform and get applause.”

s we close another year in the growth of Nelles Manor Museum we have so many to thank.

Our Visitors who support our tours and events help to fund this important Historical property. This year as in the past our visitors come from across Ontario, Canada and the World. Our Incredible and invaluable volunteers who contribute time and ideas and enthusiasm to everything we do. In 2023 we had over 60 people volunteer to act in one capacity or another as tour guides, gardeners, seamstresses, event organizers, maintenance staff, committee members, actors, researchers, archivists, bakers, cooks, servers, cleaners and in so many other ways. Our Donors – without the support of our donors we could not meet our ever-increasing costs. On going maintenance of a 225-year-old home is extensive. Heating and utilities are expensive in an old home

and rising. Insurance is very high in a public building. Your financial support is essential to our preservation of the unique property. Our Community Supporters - many organizations and local businesses have supported us during this past year. They provide support like this to contribute to the betterment of our community as a whole. It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the passing of Sharon Steen on Tuesday December 26, 2023 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton following a courageous battle with cancer. Passed away at McNally House Hospice, in his 92nd year. Predeceased by his wife Evelyn (2019) and daughters Jane Schinbein (2012) (Tom) and Iris Brown (2017) (Gerald (2022)). Survived by sons Ian (JoAnn) and Mark (Laurie). Loving Papa of grandchildren; Jason, Brittany, Emily, Christopher, Jessica, and Robert. Howard was Past Master of Union Lodge No. 7., 32nd degree mason, member of A. & A. S. R. and honorary member of Hiram No. 105 Lodge in New York. He was also President of the Grimsby Curling Club in 1977-78. Howard met his lovely wife Evelyn (civil employee) while stationed in Trenton during his term in the Air Force. They were married 65 years before she passed away in 2019. After serving in the Air Force, Howard returned to his roots on the family farm on what is now part of the Fifty Point Conservation Area. His passion for farming and gardening continued into his retirement years. During his retirement he honed his carpentry skills and left a legacy by building model doll houses for his grand daughters. As a life-long resident of Grimsby he made deep and lasting friendships through his participation in lodge, curling and euchre. Howard enjoyed summers on Christie Lake in Lanark County and fishing for walleye when he wasn’t building decks and docks. Cremation has taken place. Future impossible to forecast Just chatting around the office on deadline day and it seems some discussion at last weekend’s levees mirrored much of what has been coming our way in the last couple of months - namely, what is going to happen with the local media scene. To the credit of many of those who wanted to discuss this large, multi-headed monster, many wanted to talk about the media landscape as a whole, not just our little corner of the province. I was a bit surprised by that. Usually, people speak to what is most immediate to them. Things that affect them, directly. It’s human nature really. Now, I have a good understanding through many friends and former coworkers planted in various media across the province and some on a national scale, but I am certainly no expert. Even if I were, I would not know any more than the average Canadian paying attention to the matter. The media industry is in such a state of flux it is difficult to tell what will happen next month let alone in the coming calendar year or beyond. To be forthright, I only care - as has always been the case - what happens in Niagara West. Not for one second since 1995 have I given an ounce of thought to what was going on outside Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln - save

MIKE WILLISCRAFT for the years I was running Niagara This Week. During that run, the same principle applied to the Region, whatever ounce of earth we covered was the area of focus. That is a big part of the reason NewsNow survived what many did not. It is also what allowed Grimsby News to grow from a basement operation into a twice-weekly before I sold it and it evolved into Niagara This Week. I mean, when you talk about unexpected twists in media, who had those changes on their bingo card? I didn’t, and I lived it! Then again, who knew a second start up in NewsNow would survive closings of two printers, a circulation company and COVID to move into its second decade of service? It’s nuts when you think about it. Our goals are and will continue to be very modest. Exist. If we can do that, we will always do whatever is hu-

manly possible to get important news to you, good reader, in an accurate and informative manner. Yes, you will get opinion in this space, but I must stress it is only my opinion. I make no claim to being all-knowing or a soothsayer of any kind. I’ve been covering this part of our rock going on 30 years, so I consider my background and local education solid. So when I see ideas discussed that were considered and tried 25 years ago and died on the vine, be sure I am going to suggest shutting that down. This instance has come up in multiple municipalities on varied topics in recent years when people think they have a new idea. That is what experience can do. It saves one from potholes. For this publication, there are a couple of significant opportunities laid right at our feet - one being Stoney Creek and the other being the development/revival of a Niagara agriculture publication. This has been mentioned before, but Christmas, a last-minute vacation and New Year shuffling has set back all planning on those for more than a month. We should know in the next 1-2 months what goes on there. As for NewsNow itself, steady as she goes. All I want for 2024 is a steady, consistent year. Undoubtedly, if achieved, it would be our first.

It’s interesting to watch both sides of this Greenbelt debate throwing haymakers, yet, never landing a decent blow. Red light warning from reader Dear Editor, I just read your editorial on the red light cameras (Big Brother’s coming, Dec. 14) and the getting caught in the intersection on a left hand turn (or right if it came down to it). Full marks for your stand on the speed cameras. I couldn’t agree more. I was a school bus driver in Hamilton where these cameras are everywhere and we were told, “if you’re still in the intersection

finishing a turn while the light has turned RED, you get a ticket”.
