Improving tax ratio consistent goal By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Pushing Grimsby’s 90/10 tax base ratio closer to 75/25 is a consistent target at which the Town of Grimsby can aim. At last Wednesday Mayor’s breakfast hosted a Casablanca Inn, Mayor Jeff Jordan said several major projects currently in the works will nudge things that direction. “Within the next 3-5 years, Grimsby will experience a $3 billion boom. One billion of which will be in the industrial/commercial sector. In 2023, Grimsby issued a large amount of permits for residential, industrial,

commercial, institutional, and agricultural needs, which totalled an impressive $38.3 million,” said Jordan. “The total value of residential building permits alone, totalled $19 million. The combined total for permits in the industrial, commercial and institutional categories, totalled $16 million. The unprecedented growth is partially due to Grimsby’s location and favourable, proactive approach to development.” During a subsequent interview, Jordan gave credit to the Grimsby Economic Development Action Committee and its chair, Coun. Reg Freake, for major

progress on the commercial/industrial development front. “GEDAC and Reg have done a great job,” said Jordan. Several other key projects such as åCentury Condos and The Woolverton will dovetail with the Downtown Reimagined program to reinvent the town core. Peach King Centre’s expansion, to begin in the spring, will bring new, needed amenities, said Jordan. “The new hospital is coming, which is very exciting, GO transit is progressing as is waterfront enhancements. There are a lot of good things going on in Grimsby,” said Jordan.

WLMH name change considered The mayors of Grimsby, LIncoln and West Lincoln have proposed a name change for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital to West Niagara Memorial Hospital. “The proposed new name not only aims to better reflect the geography in which the hospital is located, but also more accurately represents the broader communities the hospital serves. Similarly, including “West Niagara” in the new name follows recent precedent in naming other community

infrastructures, such as the West Niagara Secondary School and the West Niagara Agricultural Centre & Fairgrounds. Names not only identify, they provide historical connections and symbolize the communities in which they belong,” reads a release put out jointly. The mayors submitted the request to

Hamilton Health Sciences - which oversees operation of the facility - to change the name of the new hospital. A decision about the new name for the hospital is expected to be made in spring 2024, and the new name will be effective upon the opening of the new hospital in mid-2025.

Grimsby choir to host workshop The Grimsby Celebration Choir will play host to a Choral Workshop next week, Feb. 10. The group of 40 voices, under the leadership of renowned musical director Jennifer McKillop and pianist Jessica An, perform three concerts per year, two of which are fundraisers for a chosen local charity. The four-part choir regularly performs at a variety of retirement residences in Grimsby. Last September a pop-up choir event was

organized. Participants gathered at the library to learn the music and then performed at a local restaurant. On hand to teach technique will be international performers Lisa Cosens Brillon, Lee Siegel and Maria Veter. This event - hosted at Trinity United Church, Grimsby with a cost of $45 - is open to all ages and levels of ability. Elizabeth, ‘Aunt Jayne’ as she is known to her family and friends, has lived through a century of adventure and service to Canada and says the key to her longevity is love. “If you love everyone, no matter what they look like, how they talk, then you’ve already got it made,”

Elizabeth told a crowd Thursday at The Jacob in Beamsville as she was presented with a handcrafted Quilt of Valour by Retired Corporal Royal Canadian Dragoons Sean Maher, a volunteer with the organization that honours Canadian Armed Forces members for their service. Born March 5, 1921 in South Grimsby, Elizabeth (nee Gillies) enlisted in 1943 and served as a leading aircraft woman with the Royal Canadian Air Force. She received an Honorable

Discharge in 1945, the top-most ranking a service member can receive upon leaving the military and went on to a career as an RN, raising three children and working across Canada. “She is totally awesome. state of the world… she just reminds you that regardless of what is going on always go back to your faith, to love your neighbour,” Weir said. Asked how special she felt receiving the honor Elizabeth said, “How special were you when you were born to your mother….that’s how special it was.” Elizabeth is looking forward to her 103rd birthday March 5, and hopes one day to find herself in a box seat at a Blue Jays game.

Proposed new hire would run Santa Claus Parade By Tamara Botting For NewsNow West Lincoln needs to hire more staff. That was the message brought to council by Donna DeFilippis, director of finance and treasurer, at the Jan. 15 meeting. Following a presentation where she gave council an initial look at the town’s draft 2024 budget, she also gave a staffing budget review. Currently, West Lincoln has 64 full-time, permanent positions, but senior management have identified additional needs in various departments, DeFilippis said. If all the new hires were approved for 2024, it would add around $546,000 to the annual budget, which would mean a 6 per cent increase to the levy. DeFilippis stressed that while senior management were not expecting council to approve that many new staffers, “We thought it’s important that you know where the pressures are, so as you continue to see these requests, that they don’t come as a shock, and we can start planning for these needs that are there, and that are impacting service delivery.” She noted that the positions identified include both public facing service delivery roles, as well as internal township service delivery roles, the latter of which have a greater impact on staff and their ability to do their jobs efficiently and thoroughly. DeFilippis noted there would be

two items in the 2024 base budget related to the town’s Santa Claus Parade. One item is that staff recommended a net increase of $7,600 in the town’s contributions to the event, for a total of $12,600 in 2024. The other item relates back to a discussion with council in September 2023. “Due to recognized concerns in the areas of volunteer availability, liability, and accountability, staff recommend that the coordination of (the Santa Claus Parade) be conducted by township staff,” DeFilippis’ report stated. To that end, staff is recommending that a new full-time position – community engagement and events coordinator – be created. This person’s duties would include coordinating the Santa Claus Parade (while maintaining the volunteer committee), expanding other recreational opportunities and events within the township, and taking on the duties currently fulfilled by the farmers’ market coordinator, which is a part-time position that pays $20,780 annually. The projected cost for the new position, including all benefits, is $83,100. Less the farmers’ market coordinator salary, this would result in a net impact of $62,300 on the 2024 operating budget. The draft budget presentation will take place during a special council meeting on Feb. 5.

Ann Marie “Amma” Loucks passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON, January 23, 2024 at the age of 81. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Donald Loucks and son Donald Loucks. Ann is survived by her brothers Wayne and Brendan Hamill and sister Joan Collins, her daughter Tara Loucks and Tara’s two daughters Jessica and Hayley, her son Peter Loucks, his wife Berni Liao and their four sons Alex, Caleb, Elijah and Sebastian. Ann enjoyed a very successful career working into her seventies in the Niagara Region. She developed lifelong friendships with hundreds of business owners and coworkers and earned a fantastic reputation for her knowledge, skill and hard work. Ann enjoyed the outdoors and spent her leisure time gardening, camping, fishing and swimming. An avid reader, Ann spent time with a book every day. She was known as Amma and greatly loved by her six grandchildren who will miss her dearly. Together the grandchildren enjoyed spending time baking, playing card games and learning how to write shorthand. A lifelong bridge player, Ann enjoyed her weekly games for the past 20 years with a close knit group in Grimsby. Many thanks to Marg, Doug and Marylin who helped transport Ann to and from the games when she could no longer do it on her own. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and support provided by all the staff at St. Peter’s - many thanks to the excellent nursing care, Matthew SW, and doctors Lafrenier and Tallman.

MacGlashan, Catherine Margaret (Peggy) (nee Robson) It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our matriarch, Peggy MacGlashan, on January 26, 2024 in her 99th year. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1971. She is the loved mother of Janice and her husband Wayne Moore. An amazing and adored grandmother to Scott Moore (Lisa) and Lyndsay McLean (Sean) and loving GG to Jack, Rachel, Lauren and Nicholas. She will be missed by her dearly loved friend Debbie McNair (Richard) and her son Jordan McNair (Adriana). Peggy is survived by her two loving sisters Flora McEnaney and Mary Dorris and brothers Charlie Robson and Harvey Robson. She was predeceased by her siblings Jack Robson (1954), Pearl Robson (2018), Donald Robson (2016) and Ruth Curran (2003). Peggy was born to Charles and Mary Robson on August 30th, 1925 in Bridgeburg (Fort Erie), but liv ed her early life in St. Catharines. She and Dad built a cottage on “the lake” in 1950 which soon became their home when I was born. In the early years in Beamsville she worked on the neighbour’s farm and met many wonderful people. In the 60’s she worked at AP Cleaners and later became the proprietor of Top Hat Cleaners and the Sears Catalogue Agent in downtown Beamsville. She loved what she did, because of the people who surrounded her, her colleagues and customers. She retired in 2001, and continued to do alterations until her eyes failed her. She remained independent in her home until 2023, when she realized life would be easier living with us. We are all so grateful to have had her with all the years we were given. Thanks Mom, you enriched our lives greatly. We extend our thanks to all the staff at WLMH. Mom was given excellent care. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Tallman Funeral Homes, 3277 King St., Vineland on Friday, February 2nd, 2024 from 6-8pm. Memorial Service in the chapel on Saturday, February 3rd at 11am. AITKEN, Dr. Harold Edison (Ed) November 21, 1929 January 18, 2024

Dad passed away suddenly from complications following surgery, on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in his 95th year. Beloved husband of the late Margaret (nee MacDonald) (2019). He is survived by his sons Alec and his wife Bridget and Mark and his wife Linda, his grandchildren Zachary (Kyla), Tristan, Jesse, Blaise, Phoebe (Brian) and Amelia (Colin) and great-grandchildren Owen, Maeve and Dean. Dad was born and raised on a dairy and silver fox farm in Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island. He was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, Acadia University, and McGill University where he received his medical degree while Mom worked as an executive secretary to put him through school. He began his practice of medicine as a family physician in Winona and Grimsby, Ontario and continued there for his entire career. He cherished his patients and gained a reputation as a skilled and caring family physician. Dad had a special interest in obstetrics and took pride in welcoming hundreds of newborns to the world. To him, they would forever be “tiger” or “peanut”. Outside of medicine, Dad excelled as a nature photographer specializing in nesting songbirds. He relished being close to wildlife and marveled in watching life unfold before him. He shared this joy through frequent presentations to community groups. He was a gregarious and vital citizen and was recognized as Citizen of the year in Grimsby. He was a supporter of minor sports, team physician to the Grimsby Peach Kings Hockey Team and a frequent volunteer referee of minor hockey at all levels. Dad was active in service to his profession and his community. He served on many boards of community organizations as a medical advisor, acted as a practice investigator for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and actively accepted medical students from McMaster University Medical School as a mentor. He was recognized by McMaster for his excellence in teaching and motivated many of his students to pursue successful careers as family physicians based on his example. Dad’s enthusiasm for life and boundless energy were infectious. He was curious and interested in the lives of everyone he encountered. He was dedicated to his family and somehow always found time to be present in our lives and include us in his adventures. His life was a gift to those who knew him. Well done, Dad. Now rest in peace. Alec, Mark, and families. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service and interment will take place once plans have been finalized. Not down with WLMH name change I get the temptation and the logical look to renaming West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, but I am 100 per cent NOT on side with renaming the institution. I heard a rumour a couple of weeks back there was some consideration to rename the new building West Niagara Memorial Hospital, but (as I do) I waited until I saw something in black and white before considering it real. So, here we are. Let’s deal with the obvious first. Sure, we are plunked here in Niagara West. Yes, the three municipalities are working and seeking to work together at unprecedented levels. Absolutely, everyone in Niagara West “shares ownership” of the cherished institution that is our hospital. So it does make logical sense to rename and rebrand it under Niagara West. BUT - and step back if you’re squeamish as I am about to soapbox up and get on a roll - there is no way on God’s green earth that should ever happen. As someone who has parked his butt on both Save Our Hospital committees, spent an undeniably ridiculous amount of time working the dozens of local residents scrapping and scraping to keep that place alive for more than 25 years and put every bit of my resources into the place through

MIKE WILLISCRAFT dozens and dozens of fundraisers in my near-30years in Niagara, changing the name whitewashes all that history. With the change of one word, it feels to me that all that work to keep the hospital in our community - AND the history that goes along with it alive - is dissolved in a heartbeat. Think of all the times you trucked yourself and/ or family members in there whether for care or to visit someone who was a patient. Did you ever think as you walked in, “Geez, I think they should change the name to better reflect the geographic location.” Um, that would be a no. When you were standing out on the football field at Grimsby Secondary School - with your blue candle in hand - on a freezing night in 1997 with 12,000 of your closest friends at the first massive showing of public support to keep the hospital’s doors open, were you thinking, “But if they only

changed the name...” Um, that would be a no. Over the years, I have spoken to literally thousands of people about West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Staff, administrators, residents, Auxiliary members, residents, you name it - exactly zero ever mentioned changing the name. Suffice it to say, it has been a none issue. Now it would seem, that is not the case. Maybe I am being illogical, and would understand if you thought so, but I think I have considerable skin in the game here and this is what I think. I cannot get my mind around it for the life of me. Even the mere suggestion makes me bristle. WLMH opened on Jan. 6, 1946 in the old Deer Park Golf Club clubhouse, just up Park Road South. It burned to the ground in 1948 and was reopened Oct. 23, 1949. It was not renamed then. I get it. It’s just a name. Just like Grimsby Secondary, Beamsville District and South Lincoln Secondary were just names - the kids will be fine at a new high school. More history, more fabric of the community gone forever. You don’t get these things back, people. Heritage and history stand the test of time because they survive fires and rebuilding. Don’t forget.
