WLMH OR weekend closures to start next week By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The operating room nursing shortage which has been at a crisis state for months has now necessitated weekend closures of the ORs at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Hamilton Health Sciences president and CEO Rob MacIsaac made the announcement to staff last Friday after a second OR nurse gave notice she would be leaving. The latest departure has made a crisis situation untenable if current service levels were to be maintained, so HHS has made the move.
“A number of staff in the last week have indicated they would be moving on and so that’s posing particular challenges at that site. It has to be said that the nurses at that site have been doing backflips to try to maintain service levels there but they are becoming weary,” said MacIsaac. “We are going to need to get to, on an interim basis, another model that presents reasonable expectations of how much those nurses are prepared to work.” The OR roster requires 12 staff, full-time and part time, to maintain proper levels but it currently has
three FT nurses and three PT, with one “shared” PT nurse. The immediate need is five hires. Asked if he thinks the ongoing instability at WLMH has either pushed staff to consider retirement or move elsewhere and/or kept potential hires from considering the job postings at WLMH, MacIsaac dismissed the notion. “Well, I have met with the OR nurses as a group and I have also spoken with the people who are choosing to move on for one reason or another. I’m satisfied that you know folks are leaving not because they feel like
their jobs are in jeopardy at West Lincoln but rather for a variety of other reasons,” said MacIsaac. “I think that you know, in some cases, (staff) are eligible to retire where they have their numbers and where they’ve been working extraordinary hours, really compromising their work-life balance. That’s been a key motivating factor . By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The now-pending weekend closure of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s operating rooms is a frontburner issues, says Ontario Minister of Health Christine Elliott. Reached for comment late Tuesday night, Elliott said the entire Hamilton Health Sciences/WLMH file is evolving and her ministry is focused on arriving at short-term solutions. “I am committed to bringing a new hospital to the West Lincoln community and echo the Premier’s commitment to building the hospital that the people in Niagara West and the surrounding community need,” said Elliott. To get there Hayley Chazan, Elliott’s press secretary added that Elliott is aware of the situation regarding the OR nurse shortage at WLMH. “She has directed the Ministry to work with Hamilton Health Sciences around the clock to find a solution. As the Minister said in November, any relocation of services for any reason would be temporary, and she looks forward to a solution that ensures the needs of the community are met and that patient safety is maintained. But let there be no doubt about our government’s commitment to a new hospital at the West Lincoln site,” said Chazan, adding Elliott sees the HHS discussion as “fluid”.

WL Chamber launches business survey If you own or operate a business in West Lincoln, the West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce wants to hear from you. The chamber is launching a survey of local businesses and organizations in the hopes of finding out how best to support and serve them.

know what businesses think.” The online survey, accessible from the chamber’s website and Facebook page, will take about five minutes to complete, Robertson said. Businesses or organizations don’t need to be a member of the chamber to participate, they just need to have a presence in West Lincoln. At the end of the survey, respondents will have the opportunity to enter a draw to win a free pair of tickets to the chamber’s upcoming business awards luncheon, to be held in May. Insurance senior account manager Jennifer Ahlstedt, who runs her business from her home in Wellandport, recently joined the chamber. “I joined because it’s a great way to meet people,” said Ahlstedt. “It gives you exposure, gets you involved in the community, and you learn about other businesses.” The chamber wants to know more about why businesses like Ahlstedt’s join the chamber – or don’t, Robertson said. From Page 1 advancement opportunities, as opposed to ‘I’m getting worried I’m going to lose my job if I stay here’. No one who has left has given me that reason. While MacIsaac steadfastly maintains he and his organization are doing all they can, that sentiment does not hold water for many in the community. Community Action co-chair Tony Joosse said very little has changed since HHS’s Oct. 22 announcement of a proposed 27-month closure of the ORs to accommodate a major renovation. “I feel like I am right back to Oct. 22 again,” said Joosse. “What is a shock is that after the Minister of Health’s (Christine Elliott) mandate, - at Queen’s Park and at the funding announcement at WLMH - Rob MacIsaac and his board have failed to do their job and fulfill the Minister’s direction to maintain all services with no closures.” “Do your job. That was my message to him (MacIsaac) when we met faceto-face last month. I can’t do the hiring and it appears he can’t either. It draws attention to the question of his ability to do that job. That’s his job. He has to deliver. I don’t know why he’s not. They say the right things but all the actions we’ve seen have been wrong. It is all about priority. It cer-
tainly looks like WLMH is not a priority of MacIsaac or his board.” MPP Sam Oosterhoff said the move to close the ORs on weekends contradicts every direction given to HHS to date. “My conversations with HHS have been of the need to earn back the community’s trust and start by filling the needed positions. They need to get to get OR nurses yesterday. We made a commitment. The Minister was clear in her remarks,” said Oosterhoff. “I am not the CEO. I am not sure what needs to be done to recruit new staff. Rob and Aaron (Levo, v-p communications) are there to do that and it needs to be done in weeks, not months. They are the executive of WLMH and they need to find a solution that is equitable for the community.” Regarding the comment of Minister of Health Christine Elliott’s assertion in the legislature and within the walls of WLMH, Oosterhoff said closure is not an option. “I can’t speak for Christine. I can tell you her ministry has spoken to HHS officials. We’ve been told they are doing everything they can to recruit. I am putting on all the pressure I can as is the Minister,” said Oosterhoff, again adding it is HHS officials who have to get solutions in place, not the government,” he said. And what ramifications could mate-
rialize should that not happen? “That’s a conversation which needs to happen,” said Oosterhoff, who would not comment further. MacIsaac said HSS staffing challenges are not only at WLMH. He said other facilities face potential reduction of services if staffing levels don’t improve. He did not say which facilities or which services. “Given the shortage across all our sites, we have the potential for cancelled services at all of our sites not just West Lincoln,” said MacIsaac. “You can rest assured they are going to a service that desperately needs them in their landing spot. But I think, at the end of the day, you know we do our best to try to make sure that we’re recognizing the needs of each of our sites. I can tell you now, we have been to the extent that’s reasonable deferring or extending space at the West Lincoln site, but we can only do it for so long before we feel we’re not being respectful of the employees.” Andrew Smith, chair of the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Community Advisory Committee - which was formed as liaison committee to bridge the HHS board and the communities served by WLMH - said he does not believe the HHS understands how dire the community sentiment is in Niagara West. “HSS has a major public relations problem on its hands because the
public sentiment is clear. I have heard many times, MacIsaac and the board failed to get the OR closed the first time, so now they will bleed it out. That is what the public thinks. It is a question if HHS cares or not. They say they do,” said Smith. “The community believes this is just another way to skin a cat. Number one loss of endoscopy services. That didn’t do it, so Number 2 was the proposed 27-month closure suggested. Now, number 3, because they could not turn off the life support immediately, is the weekend closure of ORs.” Key to the jeopardy WLMH will face in a couple of years time will be when usage numbers are put in front of the Ministry of Health to justify facility needs, significantly depleted numbers will be served up. “How can you go to the Ministry to support your needs when the numbers are dropping through the floor. We could have 250 or 300 births by then, down from 800 or 900. How do you justify OB and, by extension, the ORs?” MacIsaac said his team’s goal is to get up to full speed as soon as possible. “We’re looking at a variety of strategies to try to get back to 24/7 coverage and then I will be diligent in pursuing those but, the stubborn fact is we’ve got this national shortage but we are committed to creating a longterm viability for the site.

YMCA readies for Coldest Night With winter finally set in, it is a good time for many to turn their focus to those who are living in Niagara without shelter. Last year, YMCA’s Coldest Night of The Year, generated $45,000 for West Niagara Affordable Housing. The goal with this year’s event set for Feb. 23, is $50,000. The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) is a non-competitive 2/5/10km winter walk fundraiser that supports Canadian charities who serve the hungry, homeless, and hurting in cities across Canada. CNOY allows participants the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenges faced by the homeless during a cold Canadian night in the dead of winter, while raising money for a local homeless mission or shelter they know. This year’s walk will begin and end at Grimsby Secondary School at 5 Boulton Avenue. Walkers can register and turn in their fundraising results at 4 p.m. Warmed by the CNOY toques, walkers will start their route at 5 p.m. Warm drinks and a chili cook-off await their finish. Grimsby choir sings for album The Grimsby Seniors’ Choir was joined by several area school choirs last Friday to support them in recording songs for an upcoming album. Children from Smith Public School, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School and Trail Ridge Montessori were part of the fun at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. The intergenerational choir recorded covers of hits like The Tokens’ ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight,’ and The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’. “We chose songs that were treasures to us that we don’t want to lose as we pass down music through the generations,” said GSC director Jennifer McKillop. She said that the choir’s recording session was a great success.
“They sang their hearts out. I couldn’t be more proud,” McKillop added. This project was funded by the Government of Ontario’s Seniors Community Grant Program, a fund that was introduced to give seniors more opportunities to participate in their communities by providing funding to not-for-profit community groups for projects that encourage greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement for seniors. The album is slated to be released on March 3. There will be a release party on that day at Trinity United Church in Grimsby. The children will also go on tour, singing at three local retirement and nursing homes in February leading up to the album’s release.

Members of Grimsby Barbershoppers wrapped up their run Feb. 3.
Barbershoppers call it a day About 20 Grimsby Barbershoppers past and present were joined by wives and partners, as well as several of their faithful patrons at the Old Pump House to celebrate the more than 50 years the group entertained audiences in Grimsby and surrounding areas. The gathering was the final time the venerable group would get together as dwindling numbers made it harder and harder for the group to perform up to their high standards. Recalled were many fond moments of chorus and quartet performances, and there were lots of old photos and memorabilia to bring back favourite memories. And, as at most reunions, “do
you remember” was the most often heard comment throughout the afternoon. “Not surprisingly, there was also a fair bit of singing with small groups starting a song and quickly becoming larger groups as others joined in. There was plenty of refreshments for everyone and the afternoon ended with the chorus members presenting a heart-felt rendition of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Halleluja’, said long-time member Bruce Herdman. “Fittingly, Feb. 3 was the 60th anniversary of the airplane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, P.J. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and Richie Valens – the day the music died, according to Don McLean.”

Tips for hosting a wedding at home There are many benefits to hosting a wedding at home. Holding a backyard celebration or an intimate indoor ceremony at your own home can be a costeffective way to have a good time. Here are some tips to help couples navigate hosting an athome wedding. ASSESS THE SPACE The average home is not equipped to handle hundreds of guests, wait staff, caterers, and parked cars. Concessions in regard to comfort and safety will have to be made when
drawing up the guest list. The wedding resource The Knot advises the general rule is six- to 10 square-feet of floor space per guest for row seating. You’ll probably need even more space for buffet tables, seating and a dance floor. You will likely need to temporarily move furniture to comfortably fit everyone indoors - or rent a large enough tent for a backyard wedding. CLEANING SERVICES It’s important to present a clean, inviting space when hosting a wedding
at home. A cleaning service will conduct a thorough cleaning before and after the festivities. OFFICIANTS Confirm with an officiant that they can oversee the wedding proceedings at your home. Many religious officials are not able to perform ceremonies outside of a place of worship. IS IT LEGAL? Certain municipalities may require permits for parking on street, noise past a certain hour, closing of streets, and much more. You may need to coor-
dinate parking at a nearby lot and shuttle people to your home. INSURANCE Inquire if having such a large party at home is covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy, particularly if your home is damaged or someone gets injured during the festivities. Supplemental liability insurance or an umbrella policy may offer greater protection. Weddings at home can be a unique opportunity for couples who love the comfort and familiarity of their homes.

WLMH posters were great! A heads up that NewsNow received many great posters in our “Why do I love West Lincoln Memorial Hospital” poster contest. We had hoped to get some of the top ones in this edition, but with the breaking story on the weekend OR closure situation there was not enough time to get it right, so we have hit pause. We will contact all the top entrants this week, set up appropriate photos where possible and notify winners of their spoils. There was a lot of creativity and we know our readers will be impressed. Some put a great deal of thought into their work while others took a colourful artsy angle and many were very effective. Not down with OR closure at all Nope, not happy, not even a little. Yes, I know there is potential good if not great news lingering regarding West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, but that matters little to me at this point. Premier Ford could show up in town with $400 million and say, “get ‘er done, people” and it would be tempered by the current quagmire of human resources inefficiencies on display courtesy of Hamilton Health Sciences. Yes, all should hear HHS CEO and president Rob MacIsaac loud and clear when he says there is a nation-wide nursing shortage. Heard! But when there was not postings for WLMH roughly from February to early December last year, and no hires since the proposed 27-month OR closure bomb was dropped Oct. 22, one has to wonder as to the sincerity of the talent search underway. As well, it really makes you scratch your head when MacIssac refuses to acknowledge that the uncertainty caused by the wholly arbitrary 27-month closure would either push people out the door or douse the flames of any sparked interest in taking a position at WLMH. You can’t on one hand, salute the staff for working themselves into the ground to keep the OR service operational in the last three months and on the other think they aren’t looking elsewhere to get out of the fray. This is magnified by the HHS itself hiring it own staff away from WLMH, essentially pulling the plug on its own services and driving the OR into darkness on Saturdays and Sunday starting Feb. 2324. Like much of the whole HHS roll out going back to Oct. 22, it just makes no sense. We get all the economic realities. We
MIKE WILLISCRAFT get allowing staff to improve themselves and their career paths. We get potential union issues, but I have to believe even unions would understand any measures taken are for the good of the whole operation and would lead in increased stability for a whole bunch of their brethren. The cannibalizing of one’s own resources to the point where a major service is cut is simply unacceptable; a fact not lost on Minister of Health Christine Elliott or Premier Doug Ford, or MPP Sam Oosterhoff. All said at one time or another and many times over, OR service will not be cut. Well, in your face Madame Minister....HHS is about to do exactly what you promised the people of West Niagara would NEVER happen. As noted, yes, there are nursing shortages. but this problem goes far beyond the immediacy of the crisis we have in front of us today. Going as far back as last June, discussions with several people who have various dealings with WLMH and many staff revealed not just unrest but a belief the facility was being set up as a patsy. The arbitrary decision on the endoscopy service - which was not ideal in a long-outdated building but had operated without issue and generated top marks from Accreditation
Canada - foreshadowed all that was about to unfold. It has not been pretty. The Oct. 22 report on the status of the ORs which cited only a need for an occasional weekend closure to get renovation work done but, somehow, it was extrapolated into the 27-month proposed OR closure was the capper for me. Whoever even offered that up clearly and unequivocally does not have the best interest of WLMH or its patients in mind and should be fired immediately. If the HHS truly cares as much as MacIsaac maintained in our Tuesday morning discussion, the long-term closure should be removed from the table and a suitable construction timeline should replace it. That singular move would guarantee stability in the short and long term, then focus could turn to the other serious pressing issue of getting some bodies on that nursing staff. Why would any nurse, who is clearly in demand literally across the country, choose to take a gig at WLMH when they don’t know if the place will be open next week, next month or if they get shipped off to another place entirely for 27 months at some point this year. I wouldn’t, would you? And that is the smell test on all of this. Just take any one of these circumstances, put yourself in the picture and ascertain what you would do. I don’t believe there is a single instance where the common sense choice of any resident would match the path chosen by the HHS. Having had relatives fade away right in front of my eyes, this is not unlike that experience. There seems to be little that can be done but sit, wait and feel sad.

Decision to kill corridor study correct: reader Dear Editor, I am usually in agreement with NewsNow’s editorial positions on municipal affairs but do take exception to your Feb. 7 article’s comments in regard to the Council’s decision to quash the Hospital Corridor Study. It was not a “rookie mistake” but a well researched and logical response made by informed and concerned Council members. Anyone who has been paying attention to the over development of the west end (Winston Road/Casablanca) knows the depth of research that now Coun. Dorothy Bothwell (Planning Committee Chair) goes to before forwarding an opinion. She also has first hand experience with the OMB in her attempt to halt the over intensification of the LJM condo (540 North Service Road) and is therefore most cognisant of the dangers of such litigation. The simple facts of the situation are that any change in the designa-
Letter tion of the Corridor’s zoning such as was the intent of the now defunct Secondary Plan, would perhaps make it easier for the “Pay for Play” Section 37 bonusing option to come into effect. The proposed “Mixed Use” would immediately open the door to developers to “buy” as many floors of residential development as possible. By shooting down this study Council has bought us more time to better evaluate the long term needs of area. There are no guarantees that a new hospital will be built on the current site nor should be. A new hospital would better serve all communities by being more accessible from the QEW. One needs only to look to St. Catharines to see this example of an older facility (Hotel Dieu) being replaced by a more highway accessible new build. If the current zoning of NC (Neighbourhood Commercial) remains

Obviously more thought is required but my money’s on Councillor Bothwell to introduce a unique, equitable and publicly palatable solution. I would strongly sug-
