“Pirate” ship’s masts cut due to safety concerns La Grande Hermine has been a mile marker along the QEW for decades. That changed significantly last Tuesday when the remaining masts on the ship - located along the Lake Ontario shore at Jordan Harbour - were cut down after the Canadian Coast Guard deemed the structure unsafe. Early this year, Town of Lincoln filed a formal request the CCG to

refurbish the masts to preserve the tourist attraction. That request was denied. Lincoln’s CAO said no suitors stepped up to take responsibility for the ship, including the Town, which scuttled any possibility of the La Grande Hermine’s salvage. “From a Town perspective, the tourism aspect is a significant loss given the recognizability of the ship,” said Mike Kirkopoulos.

“It is too bad there was not more concern for that.” The ship was originally moved to its current location to be a restaurant, but that fell through due to financial issues. In 2003, a decorative wood encasement of the ship was set ablaze by arsonists causing a fire which could be seen for miles. The remaining structure is expected to be removed shortly.

Traffic camera motion dies in tie vote By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Just weeks after Town of Grimsby staff’s in-depth study regarding speeding in key areas suggested the issue is minimal, Niagara Region officials asked council to implement a photo radar and red light camera program. At Committee of the Whole, council rejected the idea in a 4-4 tie vote which killed the motion. Carolyn Ryall, Niagara’s director of public works transportation services division, was at council Monday, Dec. 20 seeking a vote to support the Vision Zero program - a region-wide traffic safety program which requires unanimous approval of all of the region’s municipalities. Three municipalities have approved it to date, the final presentations are expected to run into late January. Ryall said the current proposal calls for four cameras to be installed in some of the 13 initially approved locations with

10 red light cameras to be installed as well - at a cost of $4 million for the first year of operation. Several councillors noted a series of concerns with the program, ranging from: • Cost increases are projected to rise sharply with insufficient information to support the business case; • The stated goal is to reduce speeds but with tickets going to the person whom the offending vehicle is registered, the desired result may not be achieved; • Once locations are known, the result may actually be the opposite of the stated goal since motorists would slow in the appropriate area then speed up to make up the time, and; • The $4 million budget could be better allocated by spending it on expanding Niagara Regional Police’s traffic detail. “I think these automated speed cameras are a terrible idea,” said Coun. Dave Sharpe, who noted he spoke with many

After Sharpe noted the number of tickets projected worked out to roughly one out of about seven Niagara adults would get a ticket in a year, Ryall noted again safety was the goal of the program. “Community Safety Zones (CSZ) are targeting excessive speeds in areas where we are trying to promote active transportation with parents and students walking their families to and from schools safely,” said Ryall, who noted the plan is to expand the program after an initial review. Ryall would also not comment when asked at what threshold over the speed limit the cameras would be set. Ryall was also grey when asked if cameras would be active 24 hours a day if speeding during times pedestrians were going to schools and parks were the precipitating concern. “The CSZ is effective 24 hours, seven days a week. We haven’t identified if any locations will be 24 hours yet,” said Ryall. Sharpe noted the issues was the cameras, not CSZs, but Ryall did not offer more details. “That will be determined at the discretion of staff as we continue to assess and roll out the cameras,” she said. Councillors Dorothy Bothwell, Kevin Ritchie, Sharpe and Lianne Vardy voted against the proposal. John Dunstall, Dave Kadwell, Randy Vaine and Mayor Jeff Jordan voted in favour. Coun. Reg Freake was not in attendance.

Shoreline still has hidden treasures You may drive over the Burlington Skyway twice a day, but have you ever noticed the beautiful white stone lighthouse that nestles under it? Before the Skyway, the beach strip was mostly sand with a few cottages to the north and some year-round houses to the south. It was a heavenly summer spot on the doorsteps of Hamilton and Burlington. The 30-foot-wide canal was put through the sand strip in 1823. It was just south of a shallow, natural outlet and was intended to open up shipping to the harbour at Hamilton. The lighthouse replaced a wooden one that had burned by a cinder from a coal-burning vessel. The stone tower was built in 1856 by John Brown who was responsible for six famous Imperial Tow-

A Small Drop of Ink By Dorothy Turcotte ers on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Built of dazzling white stone, the lighthouse was the outstanding landmark on the Beach Strip for years. The lighthouse keeper was George Thompson who left an interesting diary of events as he saw them. Some local residents thought he saw too much. In 1859 he wrote that he had been to Hamilton to testify against two men who were fishing illegally in the Bay. On another occasion he wrote that he had reported a scow illegally taking sand from the beach to be sold to the glassworks in Hamilton. The perpetrator was warned off by a legal letter.

Both the lighthouse and the cozy little lightkeeper’s brick cottage are still in place under the Skyway. For many years their future has been at stake, with a local heritage group trying to obtain possession so that they can fix up both buildings and create a historical centrepiece for the long-awaited Fisherman’s Wharf at the canal. Whether or not that will ever happen, who knows? The wheels of heritage conservation turn exceedingly slowly. Sometime, take a detour along the Beach Strip under the Skyway, and have a look at the little lighthouse and the adjacent lightkeepers house, just to your left before you go over the lift bridge. They are local treasures that should, must be preserved.

Niagara region tree collection dates set Niagara Region’s Christmas tree collection will take place on residents’ regular collection day during the week of Jan. 10-14. Artificial trees are not collected. Residents should: • Use the large item collection service to dispose of artificial trees; • Placing trees at the curb; • Place tree at the end of their driveway no later than

7 a.m. • Remove all Christmas decorations (bulbs, tinsel, lights, etc.) before collection; • Don’t place Christmas trees on top of or inside a snow bank. This may cause injury to collection staff when trying to remove it. • Don’t place tree inside a bag as it creates a problem when chipping the trees, and; • Winter weather may delay pick-up

Weather conditions may delay collection. Leave your Christmas tree at the end of the driveway and it will be collected. Residents can also take Christmas trees to a drop-off depot or landfill site Christmas trees can also be dropped off at any landfill site free of charge. NRP continues its holiday RIDE program Niagara Regional Police continued its 2021 RIDE campaign last week with no charges laid. Wednesday, Dec. 22, the NRP conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks in Fort Erie and Thorold. Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 460 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs

earlier in the evening. In total, 15 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. Each one of these drivers provided a sample that resulted in an acceptable range and were free to drive away. The NRP remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of of-

fenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada. This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.

Niagara Region’s Forestry Department paid a visit to Coronation Park in Grimsby earlier this month to remove three trees - two Norway maples and one ash tree. The maples, which were on regional property were deemed a hazard to traffic because of advanced crown decline, This was confirmed when they were removed. Program to get 4,800 homes online unveiled Construction is underway to connect more than 4,800 homes, farms and businesses to reliable high-speed internet services by December 2022 in Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln and other areas of Niagara. The provincial government initiative announced by Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff - $17.9 million program - includes building three new infrastructure networks in Niagara. “The commitment today to expand broadband Internet in Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Niagaraon-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, Pelham and Wainfleet, will soon connect more than 4,800 homes, farms and businesses to reliable highspeed Internet services

in December 2022. I will keep working with my colleagues, the Minister and Parliamentary Assistants for Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, to invest in rural broadband in Niagara,” said Oosterhoff. Passed away peacefully at United Mennonite Home on Monday, December 20, 2021 at the age of 99 surrounded by her loving family. Much loved mother of Martin Arsenault (Debi), Rose Walton (David), Carol Castellano (Gasper), Raymond Arsenault (Debbie), Lynda Olinger and Denise McBride (Dave). Born in PEI to James and Sylvain Gallant she was the youngest of 13 children. Predeceased by all her brothers and sisters. Mina also has 16 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She moved from Hamilton to Kelowna where she worked as a nurse’s aide at a private hospital from 1974 to 1981 she always loved to help people. She also loved being with family and cooking for them. Mina enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, painting, reading, playing the organ, square dancing, gardening and her favorite the casino where she won many jackpots, she even frequented Las Vegas many times. Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. GUAGNELI, Helen D.

July 6, 1930 – December 9, 2021 Helen Guagneli (nee Bonneville) passed away at the age of 91 at her home in Almonte, Ontario, where she had lived for the past six years. She is survived by her husband Eugene Guagneli, daughter Marisa Guagneli (Michael Langlois), and grandson Jensen Langlois. A private family ceremony was held on December 16th in Almonte. Helen was born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario where she embraced both her English and French heritage. She excelled at school and attended university classes at night in Cornwall and completed her final year of course work at the University of Ottawa, for which she was very proud. Education was very important to Helen, and it is not surprising that she had a distinguished career teaching kindergarten in Cornwall and subsequently for the Canadian Forces and NATO schools in France, Germany, and Belgium in the 1960s. Her career continued in Canada where she taught for the Lincoln Country Board of Education in Grimsby, Ontario at Central School, Calder School and for more than twenty happy years at Grand Avenue School. Teaching was a vocation for Helen. She loved the children and dedicated herself to making kindergarten a happy and memorable experience. Many of her students would remember the luncheons she organized with Santa, the Teddy Bear picnics she took her classes on, the trips to the greenhouses, the special Mother’s Day tea parties, and of course, the gold painted hands for Father’s Day. A quote by Albert Einstein, that she kept close at hand, summed up her belief of her role as an educator: “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” In addition to her teaching career, Helen was an active member in the community. She enjoyed the many years she spent as a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women - Grimsby chapter, collaborating on the creation of a Scholarship Program for local young women entering or attending university. She was also a long-standing volunteer member of the Grimsby Art Gallery, as well as an active member of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Helen’s Parish. Helen was well travelled and shared many memorable adventures over the past sixty years visiting almost every continent with Eugene, as well as special trips to Europe and to both coasts of Canada with Marisa, instilling the sense of curiosity and love of travel. She also relished her trips to the Rockies with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. Before moving to Almonte in 2016, Helen and Eugene shared a warm and loving home in Grimsby with a spectacular view of Lake Ontario. She was a gracious hostess and a wonderful chef. All were welcome at her table “à la bonne franquette”, as she would say. Attending concerts and the theatre with good friends, and dancing to big band music rounded out a life well lived. She had a special “joie de vivre” that brightened the lives of everyone who was fortunate to know and love her. à Dieu- Helen, Mom, Gran, Mrs. Guagneli.

It must be Christmas time when.... It is not difficult to surmise I am in the Christmas spirit when I agree with Coun. Kevin Ritchie...even Coun. Dave Sharpe, too. I must note, I still feel a bit normal since I disagree with Coun. Randy Vaine, and you will simply love his logic on this week’s topic at hand. That topic - as I noted to a drop-in visitor to my office on Tuesday - is maybe two steps short of Niagara going full Jetson’s with law enforcement. Niagara Region is looking to opt into the world of traffic cameras in the name of improving traffic safety. Now, on the face of it, I have a great deal of time for that notion, but hearing the pitch served up to Grimsby council last week it really is poised to be a major cash grab - just as City of Hamilton’s has proven to be. There was lots of talk at the council meeting - and there will be other presentations, in the end, to all of Niagara’s member municipalities about Community Safety Zones, of which Grimsby has two (at Park School and at Blessed Trinity.) Photo radar was wrapped up warm and snuggly in the improving safety motherhood issue. This was constantly repeated throughout. The concern came, as one example, when regional spokesperson Carolyn Ryall would not answer Sharpe’s question about the cameras being on just during key traffic times - meaning when pedestrian safety was purported to be the reasoning - or full 24/7. Ryall’s answer - basically that CSZ’s are in place 24/7

MIKE WILLISCRAFT - clearly showed not only she did not want to answer the question, even after Sharpe noted the issue was about photo radar, not CSZs. That right there is the reason Grimsby council, or any other should stand their ground and say this program is not appropriate. The red light cameras... those are 24/7 and they should be. Someone could run a red light any time of night with a major collision resulting. A hockey parent driving home on Livingston at the end of a long day and after their kid’s game at 9 p.m. doing 61 kph in a 50 when nary another vehicle can be seen in either direction has nothing to do with safety. Picking off that person is a straight up cash grab. It is also important to note that fines double for traffic infractions in CSZs so that 1 kph over the threshold is an expensive one. And if that’s the case - a speeder is a speeder no matter the time, no matter the circumstance, no matter the level of speed over the limit that’s fine. But call a spade a spade

and don’t swaddle the issue in faux excuses about wanting to improve safety. Yes, it may improve safety, but more often than not it will pick off motorists who exceed the limit by very minor amounts. If these units are picking off the occasional idiot who comes flying down Livingston doing 95 in a 60, I don’t care what time of day it is. If that’s an issue, though, it should be the long arm of the law putting the touch on that driver. Simply, if one really wanted to improve safety on the roads, the NRP should enhance its traffic division and take that photo radar budget to get more officers on the streets. Now Coun. Vaine thinks more officers would not help with the speeding issue since, as he stated last week, if a bank robbery occurs the speed trap would be lost as the officer would drop it and head to that call. Exactly! Wouldn’t anyone want to have an extra officer in town to have flexibility for other more serious calls than waiting for someone to go more than 10 clicks over the limit? - common sense would certainly dictate so. I am not a fan of a police state. If you ask a resident if they would mind an extra $10 on their taxes if it meant each town got an extra officer - and that money didn’t get funnelled down to Niagara Falls as usually happens, they would do it in a heart beat. Yes, traffic safety is important, but don’t fabricate to get photo radar in place. Residents don’t deserve that.

Council needs to rescind hunting bylaw: reader Dear Editor, I am writing today in hopes the Town will pass a new law to prohibit hunting of the our beautiful wild life birds near the Pumphouse park on Elizabeth Street. I am a regular visitor at this location and I always go down daily to visit the lovely birds. Recently, though, they have become frightened and often don’t come up for the feeding left for them and seeds others have left for them. It is important the birds have trust in us feeders. I have hand-fed geese, some since they were born, and they have grown up with me. I have fed ducks by hand, too, but now they are leery of even coming up out of the water and up the boat

Letters ramp because of these bird hunters. Yesterday, when they saw the hunter and the hunting boat they fled. A woman put up a typed note warning us of the hunters and told us about them. I am thoroughly disgusted that some councillors who passed a hidden agenda to allow hunting in Grimsby. We are appalled to learn from one hunter that Grimsby is allowing this yet in Hamilton it is not allowed. Hamilton harbour is protected. So, why is Grimsby not protecting our sanctuaries. How awful for Grimsby to be so

uncaring about our own wildlife. I am called the “bird lady of Grimsby” and I have many supporters. You just may hear from a few. If not, the Town of Grimsby will be hearing about it. This is so upsetting to so many of us that I personally am willing to run in the next election if this is what it takes to stop this ridiculous new regulation.
