Each and every time we have called upon them for their support they come through.” Elliott’s acceptance of HHS’s Stage 1 shifts the process to Stage 2, which is the functional program design, which is a more detailed outline. “To support Stage 2, we’re providing $1.76 million in one-time planning grant funding,” said Chazan, adding, with that, “Our government is reconfirming our support for the redevelopment of West Lincoln Memorial by including this project in the government’s multi-year infrastructure investment plan.” With this level of support - $12 million in the past year - Joosse said eyes turn to HHS to deliver what the community wants and government supports.
“After numerous communication gaffes by HHS and operational let downs, it’s their time to shine,” said Joosse. “HHS has to deliver on getting this next phase completed ahead of schedule and ensure we have the full staff complement required to operate and provide our great community with all the services we expect in our hospital.” While the process continues to advance, Joosse noted the time is nearing to consider the local financial end of the rebuild process. “Our community needs to prepare to fulfill its part of the agreement to build a new WLMH. With early estimates putting cost of a new hospital around $200 million, the community needs to raise 30 per cent, about $60 million. So if you haven’t donated this year to the WLMH Foundation and or Auxiliary please do.”

Christina’s lights leave legacy For 27 years, 85 Deborah Drive in Grimsby has been a must-see for those who love to drive around to see homes bedazzled in Christmas lights and decorations. The home of Uby and Cindy Paul has been done up annually as a tribute to the couple’s daughter, who died suddenly at age 14 in 1993. “Christina would ask us to drive around looking for Christmas lights after midnight mass every year,” said Cindy, describing her daughter’s love of lights. This year, though, marks the last year, as the Paul’s will be moving in 2020. Dec. 31 will be the last night their home will be lit. “After that, we are giving everything away - except one special ornament we’re keeping - with proceeds split between Grimsby Benevolent Fund and the MS Society,” said Uby, adding people can call them at 289-439-5920 or drop by with a note letting them know which ornament is wanted and how much the donation will be. “We have also talked to a neighbour who will keep one of the lights on the street, so Christina’s memory will be all over Niagara West,” said Cindy.

Grimsby musicians win CBC battle of the bands These kids really know how to rock. Two bands made up of students from Grimsby’s Strive Studios placed in the top three for different categories of the national CBC Music School competition. The CBC published its list of winners on
Tuesday, Dec. 7. The band ‘For Broken Hearts’, won first place in the ‘community class’ category for their cover of Shawn Mendes’ ‘In My Blood’. Not to be shown up, ‘6 Problems’ landed third place in ‘junior vocals’ for their cover of
‘Shine’, the Canadian 2020 paralympic team’s official anthem. “The last week’s honestly been surreal,” said Brent Wirth who taught both bands at Strive. “I can sincerely say that these bands are really stand out groups.”

Homes By DeSantis owner Gabe DeSantis told those at a public meeting this month Gillian’s Place will occupy the ground floor. As one of Ontario’s first shelters for abused women and children, Gillian’s Place has been providing safe refuge and non-residential programs that enable women and their children to break the cycle
of violence for over 40 years. This specific building would be considered an outreach facility for education and community engagement. Further the second floor hopes to house a complementary service to Gillian’s Place. At the initial public open house in October 2019 the developer heard feedback that it was preferable the heritage home remain in its existing location. The new application presented in December proposed exactly that

David Wilson
It is with great sadness that the family of David Wilson announces his passing after some very serious health issues over the past years which came to a head on November 11, 2019. He was admitted to hospital and remained there until Monday, December 9, 2019 at the age of 83 years he succumbed. David will be lovingly remembered by his wife Pamela of 61 years, and their 2 sons, David Malcom (Sharon), Bradley (Maryanne). Four grandchildren, Kasi (PJ), Kiel, Danielle (Jerimiah) and Brandon (Erica), 3 great grandchildren, Wyatt, and twin girls Riley and Morgan. He is fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Bonita, and many nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his sister Jean (Wilson) Williams. David was well known and excelled in newspaper advertising, heavy tonnage printing in Montreal and Toronto for most of his career. For 16 years when he turned 52, he and his wife traveled by RV all across North America. Some of those years were spent overseeing an RV club. There will be a celebration of life early Spring 2020.

Winona author tells tales of wartime England By Tristan Marks NewsNow Valerie Nielsen had a happy childhood. Yes, her birth place of England was at war. Yes, her father had been sent away to fight the Germans while Nielsen, her mother and her brother evacuated to the countryside to avoid the blitz. Yet, through it all, she said she remained “a happy child”. The Winona-based author recounts her childhood experiences during WWII in her new memoire ‘Golden Girl: A Child in Wartime England’. She was originally inspired to write while editing and finishing a book by her late father, Charles Wilkinson about her mother entitled, ‘Remembering Marjorie’. This book recounted the love Nielsen’s parents had for each other, and by the end of the process she wanted to write a similar book from her own perspective. “After I finished up and published my father’s book, I thought it would be a good idea to put my own memories down,” Nielsen explained.
Valerie Nielsen “The title for my book came from a note from my father where he asked me to finish his book. There was a line that said, “keep on my golden girl”.” A major focus of the book is this bond that connected her family together despite the troubles and separation. When her family evacuated from Kent in the UK, Nielsen’s father stayed to take care of his own mother who could not be evacuated. Eventually he joined the war as a member of the Royal Air Force. In one chapter she recalls a time when a special package came to the house she, her mother and her brother were staying in. She said
she “vividly remembers” the postman holding on to a rabbit by the ears, with a postage stamp stuck to its side. “My dad sent us a rabbit all the way out in the country so we could supplement our Christmas dinner,” said Nielsen. Nielsen and her family also took “beach holidays” to Dover several times during the war. Her father would join them there whenever he was on leave from the RAF. “Those were special times. Mum would make special meals for when my dad was able to join us,” said Nielsen. Throughout the book, Nielsen supplements her own memories with excerpts from letters and diary entries penned by her parents. “I don’t know how my mum did it,” she said. “I don’t remember feeling scared. My mother kept me and my brother safe.” ‘Golden Girl’ is available in select independent stores, including the Grimsby Museum. Nielsen will talk about her book at the Thursday At 10 meeting at the Livingston Centre on Feb. 6.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT to everything that moves, certainly everything we can humanly get to. For a team comprised of just four full-time equivalents, I think we do a pretty good job. We live to our means, that’s for sure. Earlier this month our posse ventured up to Mohawk Raceway for dinner and some harness racing/ casino action. That was really the first time we’ve done anything like that and, boy this crew deserved it. It has been a long, tough fall mostly due to my own constant being behind the eight-ball since September. Not a complaint, just an observation. It was completely my own fault in taking on a couple of projects - one flew, one died a painful death - but both were equally time consuming. The problem was, neither had anything to do with the paper, so all my planning and office work got pushed to the background and I never really caught up. Again, not a complaint. The reason I mention it is, when I say this team deserved a real, away from work outing, it is because of how they save my bacon on a regular basis. By having someone as rock steady as Catherine make the office hum, I
never have to worry about anything administrative. When she is on the run, Rose steps in and keeps things moving forward effortlessly. Erica, as classy a sales person as one can find. Donna pumping out ads and pages with precision and flare...she is second to none. Content, the diligent Tristan (who has now been here just over a year) and the intrepid Joanne bail me out on a weekly basis when I straight run out of time. They are the best and I appreciate them every day. Even with their support day after day, week after week and month after month, we would be working for nothing if it were not for you, good reader, and the excellent support we get from our business community. Please take a look through the pages of our little publication and, when the opportunity arises, please support them. I have always been a big proponent of shopping locally )when convenient and when the local shop has the product or service you need), but even within the local fishbowl, if you support the businesses who support us it helps ensure we will survive. When we first started, it was all about survival. Now, nearly eight years in, we are entrenched in the communities we serve and are continuing to look for ways to further develop our coverage and impact in the community. Resident not interested in development plan (Editor’s Note: An open letter to Grimsby council) Dear Mayor and Councillors, I am sorry I was unable to attend the Town open house regarding the above property. I am writing to express my outrage at what is proposed for the development of 133 Main Street East. This will only add to the continued destruction of the character our town through ever increasing higher density and the unbearable pressure on our infrastructure. The last municipal election was a clear statement that people had had enough of mismanagement and destruction of our community driven by blind desire to increase the tax base with no consideration for the heritage and character of our community - NO VISION. I realize the need for increased revenues was due in large part to fiscal mismanagement. I was heartened
