Ganann acclaimed as West Lincoln mayor By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Cheryl Ganann will be back for a second term as West Lincoln’s mayor after being acclaimed to the position. With candidate registrations for this Oct. 26’s municipal election closing last Friday, there were no takers to challenge Ganann’s position. She was first elected in a byelection in Ward 3 in 2016 and reelected to that position in 2018. In 2022, she stepped up to run in the mayor’s race and won her first term. “I didn’t expect it at all. I have 6,000 brochures ready to go,” said Ganann, adding plans for signage and volunteers to help with a campaign were all set. Ganann took over the mayor’s chair after several terms of considerable turmoil in West Lincoln. While there was, at times, intense debate around the council table, she said council kept their comments on the issues at hand. “I can’t commend this group that I have worked with enough because we have had some rousing disagreements, but people left

it in the council chambers,” said Ganann, adding that council as a whole wanted the community to take pride in what the township council was doing and saying.
“We want people to feel they are proud to live here,” said Ganann. On policy and initiatives, Ganann said a key direction of council in the last term was to re-introduce

They sit empty during the daytime.” “We have the staff, the interest and the enthusiasm for moving these programs out, so we’re reaching out to the community to see what they want.” While programming is important, so too is planning ahead for

Seaborn was elected to her first of two councillor terms in 2010. In 2018 Seaborn was a distant fourth of five candidates who vied for Ward 3, but in 2022 she returned winning the regional councillor position in a close race over Wayne Fertich. Current councillor Veronica Charrois, who won a seat on council for the first time in the 2022 election in Ward 3 will also persue the top job. Grimsby businesman Simon Duong, owner of Teddy’s Sport Bar and part owner of Grimsby Peach Kings will round out the field. GRIMSBY WARD 1 George Bodnar, Kevin Ritchie and Margot Smeenk will compete for a Ward 1 spot GRIMSBY WARD 2 Incumbents Don Howe and Lianne Vardy will try for re-election against, Ben Purkiss and David Scott.
GRIMSBY WARD 3 Ward 3 has the busiest roster with incumbents Jacob Baradziej an Jennifer Korstanje taking on Ryan Day, John Dunstall, Joanne Johnston, Amy Lupton, Jonathan Polowick and Shane Weaver. GRIMSBY Ward 4 Incumbents Nick DiFlavio and Reg Freake will be joined by Wayne Fertich to contest Ward 4. LINCOLN MAYOR Lincoln mayor will be a three horse race with two current councillors - Greg Reimer and Adam Russell running to replace retiring Mayor Sandra Easton. Both Russell and Reimer were first elected to their first of two terms in 2018. Cheryl Keddy-Scott served Lincoln as a public school board trustee for two terms from 2010-2018. The Town of LIncoln for the first time - will only have three wards contest-
ed as the current council voted to reduce the number of wards in the municipality. Fighting the flood

Passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, on Friday, August 21, 2026, in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of the late Wendy Marie Watt (nee Coulson) (2015). Loved father of Shawn Watt (Loraina) and the late Tim Watt (1994). Cherished grandfather of Taylor (Gavin) and Connor (Jaydan), and great-grandfather of Klaire and Lukas. Brother of the late Fred and Dave Watt and brother-in-law of Albert Coulson, the late Frances Beaupit and the late Paul Coulson. Jack was a longtime member and former elder of Trinity United Church and very active in the Grimsby community, giving of his time and talents to many service clubs and volunteer organizations. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of St. Peter’s and West Lincoln Memorial Hospitals for the compassionate care given to Jack over the last few weeks. Passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, after a courageous effort to recover from a stroke. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Survived by his beloved wife, Betsy McClement, with whom he shared 36 devoted years. He was a proud father of Donna, Noel (Tammy) and Tracy. He was a cherished grandfather, great‑grandfather, uncle and a loving brother to Judy and Keith. Dave was pre‑ deceased by his parents, Frank and Lillian Hersey (née Clow). Dave will be remembered as a man of integrity, kindness and quiet strength. His strong work ethic was evident in his 30 years of dedicated service with the City of Burlington, where he retired as a respected bus driver. Outside of work, Dave found joy in the things that sparked his curiosity and sense of adventure ‑ cars, motorcycles, trains and any intellectually challenging puzzle that kept his mind sharp. These passions reflected the thoughtful, inquisitive and hands‑on way he approached life. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled ‑ honesty, dependability and the importance of showing up for the people you love. Those who knew Dave carry forward his example in the way they treat others in the kindness they choose each day. His presence will be missed, but his influence remains. It is with deep sadness that we share that our loving dad, Arnaldo Pietro Izzo, passed away on August 19, 2026 in Beamsville at the remarkable age of 97. He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was born in Calvi Risorta, Italy, on February 1, 1929, and in 1958 he emigrated to Canada with the love of his life, Anna (2002). Together they raised nine children. His life was one of sacrifice, courage, and love. The life we enjoy today is a testament to everything our dad worked so hard for. He was an extraordinary dad with a wicked sense of humor, always telling jokes and making everyone laugh. He was blessed with a sharp mind and a talent for numbers and could outdo anyone in math. One of his greatest qualities was his unwavering perseverance. No matter how hard life became or how discouraged he may have felt, he faced every challenge with courage, never giving in and never giving up. For most of his working life, our dad was a fruit farmer. Over the years, he acquired many acres of farmland and operated fruit stands, where we, his children, spent our summer days working. Memories we now cherish. In 1991, at an age when many would be looking forward to slowing down, he and our mom embarked on a new journey and founded Anna’s Daycare Centre, which continues to operate today through two of his daughters. We are so incredibly thankful to our Heavenly Father for giving us the gift of such a wonderful Pa. We were blessed to call him our father, and now he has been called home to be with the Father who lovingly calls him His son.
He leaves behind his children, who adore him and will miss him deeply: Sylvia (Tony); Ralph (late Karen); Rita (Jeff); Tony (Robin); Connie; Maria; Carmela (Tony); Antoinette (Joe); and Anna (Ishy). His grandchildren: Julian (Naz), Jonathan (Cassie), Jesse (Leata), Anna (Michael), Peter, Sophia, Ross, the late Rose, Matthew, Daniel, Madeleine, Joey, Anna India, and Siena. Great-grandchildren: Adriana, Antonio, Alessandro, and Concettina.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Andy Lam and Dr. Sung-Ho Um for the exceptional care and compassion they showed our dad over the years. We are especially grateful to Dr. Don Smith, who cared for our dad for more than 30 years before his retirement. We are grateful. Grazie pe` tutto, Papà. Haje fatto buono. Te vulimme bene.

It would have been fitting to all homes & businesses in Niagara West, 29,006 to see him elected posthumously as a thanks for his five terms of service to the good people he represented. Mike was what one might call a “character” - something at which he would undoubtedly grin at hearing. Some may have called him abrupt or even rude, at times. Having dealt with scores of elected officials over the years, I choose to call him honest as the day is long, sincere and invested in doing the right thing by his constituents and his municipality as a whole. The first time I met Mike was back in my Grimsby Independent days - the community newspaper, not the online trash. There was an issue with apple powdery mildew - as it was called at the time - damaging orchards at E.D Smith farms in Winona where Mike worked managing the orchards. MIKE WILLISCRAFT mate and long-time friend Jason Trombetta noted over the weekend, was his #1 passion. He loved Caistor. He loved the land and the people and his township. What I always appreciated with Mike - after you let him ramble a bit on whatever the topic of the day was - was his honesty. People may not always have liked what he said but he spoke from the heart and was 100 per cent honest in his convictions. There was no posturing or passive aggressive tendencies. The basis for his view always went back to his sole directive - what was best for the municipality, in his opinion. That included the size and scope of the new West Lincoln Community Centre - which posed a conundrum for many a West Lincoln taxpayer. Mike always called it the MURS (multi-use recreation site) for years, refusing to call it a community centre or arena. The initial cost of $16
million was found to be too expensive in 2016, so when it came back to the table in 2017 with a $23 million plus price tag - and it got approved - Mike was not happy. That was an issue he never really got over and never understood. That willingness to fight for a good cause, something he believed to be right, is something lost on a lot of elected officials who put their own interests ahead of the taxpayers they serve - I’m talking to some of you around the Grimsby council table and former card carrying G5 members who are taking another shot at getting into the council chambers. Being an elected official at any level - is not easy. You cannot please everyone and if you try, you will only end up shooting yourself in the foot at some point. There will always be boneheads - much like myself - who think they know better. The problem with the keyboard jockey types is half-truths and innuendo they use to discredit people who are doing their level best. That’s the unfair part for the elected lot. Mike Rehner recognized that. He believed what he believed and he would have no problem telling you - to your face, never behind anyone’s back - exactly what that belief was. Because of that, I always had time for Mike chats and, like his constituents, I will miss him.

Niagara West issues on table at AMO Niagara West officials were representing at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference last week. “AMO is an important opportunity for us to put Lincoln’s priorities directly in front of provincial decision-makers and advocate for the support our community needs,” said Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. Number one on Lincoln’s hit list was flood recovery. The Lincoln delegation met with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to advocate for the activation and funding of the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program for affected residents, as well as Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) and other provincial recovery funding to support eligible municipal response, cleanup and infrastructure costs. The Ministry has committed to ensuring Lincoln can be in a place to activate both DRAO and MDRA soon. Among other items on the agenda were: • Future funding opportunities for the redevelopment of Jor-
dan Lions Park and Beamsville Lions Park; • Recruitment and retention challenges for volunteer firefighters, and; • With more than 240 properties on Lincoln’s potential designation list, the Town sought more time and resources to help make informed decisions. GRIMSBY Town of Grimsby, too, was seeking an extension of Ontario’s Jan. 1, 2027 deadline for issuing “Intention To Designate” heritage properties to Jan. 1, 2030. Grimsby has designated 63 properties since 2023. Among the other items on Grimsby’s list were: • Highlighting the impact existing QEW infrastructure and Environmental Assessment timelines are having on growth and development along Grimsby’s QEW corridor. Grimsby advocated for progress on the QEW widening EA to support future transportation capacity, economic development and responsible growth, and; • Concerns about misalignment between Site Plan Control processes, Ontario Building
Code requirements and Safe Drinking Water regulations that can create duplication and delay development approvals. Grimsby advocated for better regulatory coordination to protect drinking water. WEST LINCOLN West Lincoln got a favourable and immediate positive response when officials suggested developing an agriculture-based event for the community. West Lincoln is positioned to be a key municipal partner in developing and promoting agricultural tourism initiatives, such as a modern agricultural festival, agricultural tourism routes, and partnerships connecting visitors with farms, local food, markets, craft beverages, and heritage sites. Another important item was the ask for support with the Wellandport Community Park project, which would enhance the existing 7.7-hectare area and create new, accessible opportunities for active living, waterfront recreation and yearround community programming in the rural area.
