Grimsby council rejects second logo offering By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It’s been a bumpy ride for Town of Grimsby’s logo and branding exercise - one which will continue for the new council, if at all, when it is installed after this fall’s municipal election. Council voted down a second proposed logo 5-3. In June, a consultant created logo was hammered and, ultimately, rejected by council with the result
being staff getting asked to come up with a report and Plan B for a reconsideration. That report came to council Monday, Aug. 10. While the resulting logo offered was not as offbase, in council’s assessment a different issue arose - similarity to another logo. In a written delegation, resident Adam Mottershead pointed out to coun-
cil that the proposed logo shared similarities to a generic logo found online. “I will be completely blunt: in my opinion, this project has been a complete and utter failure. Following a tender award of $48,075 plus HST ($54,324.75 including HST), Council has been presented with a generic and uninspired identity that could belong to almost any agricultural or
lakeside community,” noted Mottershead. “Of particular note, the recommended logo bears a striking resemblance to stock artwork available online at https://www. vecteezy.com/ for $10.00 USD, as one resident on social media pointed out. In presenting the reworked logo to council, Christina Davidson, the Town’s communication specialist, said staff over-
hauled the “challenging project.” “Following council’s direction in June, staff worked closely with our local designer to refine the concepts based on the feedback that we received,” said Davidson. “Everybody sees things different. BIA needs to expand programming outside core: Davoli By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While a review of Happening in Grimsby was up for discussion at last Wednesday’s Grimsby Business Improvement Area (BIA), its future was of more concern for one member. Simon Duong, who stepped down from the BIA in June to focus on a run for mayor, gave a glowing review of this year’s event. Duong also chaired Happening, but has stepped down from that committee as well. Despite 100 vendor applications, attendance in the 20,000 ballpark and “the dining patios were busy”, Duong noted that not all merchants on Main Street were happy. He noted Giant Tiger had major
issues with their parking lot being filled with eventgoers, taking up customer spots. Comments from board members noted the day is not solely about shopping as opposed to showcasing businesses for return visits with board members agreeing it’s more important to showcase the town than one day of sales. With 2025 behind the community, Coun. Delight Davoli asked about the location of the 2026 edition of the event due to pending Main Street upgrades to water and sewer lines which will take over much of downtown through next spring. “For all intents and purposes, the Peach King Centre will be the home unless
something miraculously happens where they could come back down here.” said Duong. Davoli, who has repeatedly attempted to get the board to expand its programming outside the Christie to Elm stretch of Main Street through this term of the board, tried again. “The downtown business improvement area is more than just Main Between Christie and Elm,” said Davoli, suggest Livingston be utilized and Grimsby Square Plaza brought into the event. “You’ve heard me wish that we expand our programs more and more and include those vendors (retailers) outside that area. People know they are there, so that’s the difference between being down there and being downtown,” said Duong. However, Canadian Tire manager Dave Courtney said he did not have a discussion with anyone re-
garding Happening and he would support having event programming in the parking lot - as it was done for many years when Happening’s predecessor, Festival at the Forty, ran a full midway in the mall parking lot. Typically, the mall merchants association and site owner First Capital would also need to support the plan. “We talked to them about it,” Duong maintained. Board chair Mark Wood cut off the questioning asking who the new Happening contact person was with Duong stepping off that committee. He said Gijs de Groot of FORT or Rebecca Shelley of Grimsby Chamber of Commerce are now the contacts.

Bench wineries champion protest By Mike Wiliscraft NewsNow Winery owners on The Bench area of Lincoln have banded together to help fight a major high-rise development proposed for Beamsville’s west end. The project, planned for the corner of King Street and Lincoln Avenue has met with stiff community opposition due to height, density and - with recent events - flooding concerns. Harold Thiel, owner of Hidden Bench Winery, is helping navigate an Ontario Land Tribunal appeal. To ensure community members are up to speed and on the same page, Thiel’s group has planned a fundraising meeting for Monday, Aug. 31 at The Good Earth Food and Wine Co. located at 4556 Lincoln Ave., Beamsville, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The proposed buildings are nearly double the height the current zoning allows. Independent expert modelling shows that extra height would dam airflow and pool cold air over the vineyards, dropping nighttime

CLAC, Mohawk College team for new Grimsby campus Mohawk College and the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) have signed a memorandum of understanding for a new $25 million Grimsby campus. The facility, which will be a nearly 40,000 sq ft expansion of CLAC’s current at 89 South Service Rd., will be aimed at addressing urgent labour market needs through expanded skilled trades training capacity and accelerated apprenticeship pathways. The added capacity the Grimsby location provides will help with the backlog of apprentices waiting for in-class training in high demand Red Seal Programs such as electrical, plumbing, welding and carpentry. “By expanding access to high-quality, hands-on apprenticeship training, we are helping more people move

A Bittersweet Farewell After more than 30 years at Grimsby Animal Hospital, I have made the bittersweet decision to hang up my stethoscope and officially retire. This has been an incredibly difficult decision because I truly love my job. Most of all, I have always felt a deep dedication to my clients and their beloved pets, and the thought of letting them down has made this decision especially hard. The relationships I have built over the years have meant so much to me, and I will always be grateful for the trust you have placed in me to care for your animals.
There is something incredibly rewarding about watching these animals regain their strength in a safe environment before they are eventually released back into the wild.

My semi-retirement over the past two years, working just one day a week, has given me the opportunity to explore some new interests and rediscover the joys of having more free time. I have enjoyed playing pickleball with the local Grimsby Pickleball Association, golfing, downhill skiing, travelling, and, most importantly, spending more time with my family and friends. Having had a taste of this lifestyle, I have found myself wanting even more time to enjoy it! Although I am retiring from veterinary practice, I am very grateful that I can continue to follow my passion for animals through volunteer work. I will continue my work with the charitable organization Urban Wildlife Care, where I am able to use my veterinary skills and knowledge to help injured and orphaned wildlife, including squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, coyotes, foxes, and many other species. I also really enjoy the time I spend there with my husband, Denis, helping to make improvements and repairs to the outdoor enclosures and the facility itself.
I have also greatly enjoyed my volunteer role with another wonderful charitable organization, the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) in Peterborough. As a first responder for injured turtles in the Niagara Region, I am able to provide emergency care to these sweet patients before they are transported to the OTCC for further treatment and rehabilitation.
Both of these volunteer positions are incredibly rewarding and allow me to continue doing something I have always loved—helping animals. As I close this chapter of my career, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of my clients, patients, colleagues, friends, and family who have been part of my journey over the past 32-plus years. It has been an absolute privilege to care for your four-legged family members, and I will cherish the many memories, friendships, and experiences that I have gained along the way. While saying goodbye to veterinary practice is bittersweet, I am excited about this next chapter and all that it will bring. A Message of Thanks and an Update on Recent Power Outages To our valued Customers: Thank you - your patience during the recent power outages caused by torrential rain and high winds; your understanding while our crews worked to restore service safely, and your continued trust in Grimsby Power means a great deal to us. We understand how frustrating and disruptive a power interruption can be, whether it affects your home, business, or peace of mind. We do not take that impact lightly and are deeply grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our customers during these recent occurrences. In every instance, our operations and field crews responded as quickly and safely as conditions allowed. On July 1st, adverse weather conditions impacted several areas across the Niagara Region, causing multiple outages for Grimsby Power along with neighbouring utilities. A majority of Grimsby Power outages were caused by fallen trees contacting distribution lines at multiple locations simultaneously, and impacts originating from the transmission system. Grimsby Power crews responded promptly, cleared hazards, and restored service to most affected customers within a few hours. On July 2nd, power was restored within an hour, and on August 2nd, service was restored in 96 minutes. These results reflect the dedication, skill, and commitment of our employees, whose efforts helped minimize the duration of outages and restored service safely. While some of these events originated on the transmission system and were beyond our direct control, Grimsby Power remains committed to delivering reliable service. We continue to monitor and invest in our infrastructure to improve system resilience and reduce the impact of future outages. Our goal is straightforward: fewer outages, faster restoration when outages occur, and a power system our community can depend on. Rare river otter makes Grimsby wetlands appearance There have been all kinds of sightings of rare creatures - usually the winged variety - at Grimsby’s wetlands at the Biggar Lagoon but earlier this month a rare river otter started to set up camp. On Sunday morning, Aug. 2, a river otter was observed and photographed at Watcher’s Pond in the Grimsby Wetlands Project. River otters are seldom seen in Southern Ontario. They are known to visit river systems flowing into Lake Ontario. Otters may live in larger river systems like the Credit, Bronte and Niagara River. This was the first known sighting of a river otter in the Fifty Point/Grimsby area. “River otters will travel
the lake shoreline looking for new territories or mates. Juvenile otters will disperse from the parents’ territory to look for their own to set up,” said Bruce Mackenzie, wetlands coordinator. “Travelling from the north shore of the lake or Niagara area is not likely a great trip for them. We have beavers also show up from time to time. They have a nice colony on Fifty Creek in the Conservation Area.” Aquatic mammals like river otters and beavers will sometimes cruise the shoreline of Lake Ontario looking for suitable habitat sites. With the plentiful rains of late the drainage ditch at the edge of the Grimsby Wetlands
may have provided the stimulus for the otter to explore upstream and allow it to discover one of the large ponds at the Grimsby Wetlands. The ponds at the Grimsby Wetlands support a wide variety of birds and mammals but the space is not large enough to house a River Otter for long. They need large territories and plenty of fish. It is suspected that it has now returned to Lake Ontario. The lands belong to Niagara Region and the Department of National Defence. A section of Grimsby Waterfront trail leads into the Region’s property and gives public access to a number of excellent viewing platforms.

Our Lord, in His infinite wisdom, called home his faithful servant, Garry Neville Warden in his ninety -second year. Garry reunites with his late wife, his “Lovey,” Veronica Dykstra.
Predeceased by his brothers, Jim and Chic, and his infant son, Garry Kyle, Garry leaves behind his daughters Cyndy (Ron) and Cathy as well as his sons Craig, Garry (Radka), and James (Jennie) and daughter in-law Edith. Garry will be greatly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him incredible joy: Garry & Linda, Walker, Jeremiah, Larissa; Krystin & Ryan; Beth, Eva, Judah; Jenna; Hannah & Antoni, Abraham, Silas, Hadassah, Miriam, Theophilus, Cornelius, Ebenezer, Keturah, and Zipporah; Bill; and Johnathan; along with his many beloved nieces and nephews and his brother in Christ, Peter Ton. Garry’s life was a testament of God’s amazing redemption. A broken sinner saved by grace his life was drastically changed when Jesus found him. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Kiriacos (Jack) Tarpos, on August 13, 2026, at Hamilton General Hospital following a stroke. He was 91 years old and passed peacefully with his loving family by his side. Born in Tihio, Kastoria, Greece, in 1934, Jack came to Canada in 1952 at the age of 17, determined to build a better life. A chef and proud restaurateur throughout his life, he founded The Village Restaurant in Stoney Creek in 1970. He later spent 25 years in West Lincoln, operating The Village Chalet, The Old Farm Inn in Smithville, and Big Jack’s in Bismarck. Jack was the devoted husband of Ourania (Nicki), his beloved wife of 69 years, and cherished father of Helen, Irene (Rick Vanderwal), Anastasios, and the late Sophia (Lou Perry). He was a loving Dedo to his grandchildren Evan Wright and Trevor Vanderwal. Family was at the heart of Jack’s life. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of cooking and music, wonderful sense of humour, storytelling, and especially the many Sundays spent gathering his family around the barbecue. He took great pride in the life he built in Canada and, above all, in the family he loved so dearly. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 21, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, an organization close to the family’s heart.

Now, for anyone who has been in town longer than five minutes, you will recall that Festival At The Forty used to host a full midway in the parking lot in front of Sobeys. So for events being run elsewhere in the BIA area, Duong said no, and this is the odd part, “because they
feel that they are going to lose a lot because the parking would be used right up. There would be no parking.” Question: The downtown core gets blocked off, what, 25-26 days per year with special events and the market. Grimsby Square and its owner First Capital (which I asked directly), used to have a full midway in the parking lot. To date, they have not been asked (despite what was said at BIA) if they would consider hosting. But why would there be a concern about parking for the mall but not Main Street merchants? They all pay BIA taxes and Grimsby Square merchants have always been supportive. They should be given an opportunity. A tinge of hypocrisy, me thinks.... And that’s the BIA rolled into another issue that shows zero consideration of any big picture thinking. It is a head scratcher thinking how a rationale that settles on it being ok to negatively impact some businesses dozens of times in a year could not be equated to a one-time event down the street where it has a history of operating for many years? Make no mistake the Happening is NOT a BIA event. It is run by a separate committee. Duong chaired that group, as well as BIA, until he stepped down for his mayoral campaign. However, in terms of location, they dovetail. Like many things, BIA, nothing is as it seems.
