met with representatives of the Cave Springs’ board of directors and the Legacy Hall fundraising team at the Cave Springs Camp in Beamsville for the presentation. Past Rotary President Sue Foster said that the organization is also call-
ing for a $25,000 matching donation from the community. “This is the largest one time donation the club has made to any organization,” Foster said. “We believe in the direction that the camp is making in taking it to a
four-season operation and supporting youth leadership and development all year round.” The community challenge aspect is intended not only to bring in more financial support for the project but to generate more awareness in general, Fos-

Here is what you need to know about the FTHBI; The FTHBI is designed to help qualified first-time home buyers with affordability, as the incentive acts a downpayment boost. A larger downpayment means a lower monthly mortgage payment. This FTHBI is a “shared equity” concept, whereby the Federal Government will have an ownership stake in the property, in the form of a second-position mortgage registered against the property, with a 25-year term. The incentive is not interest-bearing, and it does not require any ongoing repayment. However, one must repay the incentive after 25 years of occupying the home, or when the property is sold (whichever comes first). The amount owing at time of repayment is based on the home’s fair market value. The incentive can be repaid at any time without penalty. To be eligible for this program, a first-time home buyer must already have the minimum 5% downpayment. With a 5% downpayment already saved or gifted from family, one then can apply for this 5% or 10% shared equity mortgage. The minimum 5% downpayment cannot come from borrowed funds, such as an unsecured line of credit, or a personal loan. Qualified first-time home buyers are those with annual household incomes of up to $120,000. If you and your spouse or co-purchaser earn more than $120,000, then you are not eligible. The total borrowing amount is limited to 4 times the household income. The mortgage must be eligible for mortgage default insurance, and it must be for greater than 80% of the property value. Sisters give monarchs the royal treatment Sisters Chris and Julia Coutts have a special hobby. Each spring and summer, they gather monarch eggs to raise them from larva-tochyrsalis-to-butterfly. They harvest the eggs from milkweeds
growing in Nelles Manor’s garden. The sisters’ grandparents, Linda and Barry Coutts, run the museum and put those plants in the garden for that purpose. From there, they feed the caterpillar and protect them as they

Hall, brought a monarch egg to the classroom. “Our teacher brought it in as a class pet for us to watch it grow,” she explained. She said this inspired her and her sister to help conserve the species. The species is listed as “special concern” by the Government of Ontario. According to Julia, only one-in-20 eggs survive the journey of caterpillar to butterfly in the wild. Of the 29 eggs, 27 Julia and her sister gathered from the last generation made it to full growth. “Compared to the survival rate in the wild, we have a lot more surviving,” said Julia.

GAMRU greater than the sum of its parts Committed volunteers reflect their community
(Editor’s Note: The following is Part 2 of NewsNow reporter Tristan Marks’ day on the water with Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit) By Tristan Marks NewsNow The two GAMRU ships were headed back to Fifty Point Marina. The crews had just finished a day of honing their search and rescue skills when a sudden siren interrupted the return trip. The crew quickly gathered around the radio to listen to the incoming dispatch. Somewhere there was a marine emergency. “This was a showstopper situation,” said GAMRU Deputy
Unit Leader Doug Mepham. “We stop whatever we are doing to take that call.” Crewman Danielle Mackie diligently noted all the details filtering through the broadcast: there was a boat in need of immediate assistance, it was on fire and it was on Lake Erie. With that last detail the crew began to stand down, although crewman Mackie finished noting the incident. Coxswain Steve Ingram explained that coast guard crews have to log all broadcasts they receive as a matter of procedure. It was not long before the ships pulled into the marina and docked. Although training was done, Mepham explained

that the crews remain on call. GAMRU consists of usually 5-6 different crews who cycle each

week. If an emergency comes in, the on-call crew for that week is obligated to take to the waters. The crew members receive the call either via pager or through a special app for emergency responders called ‘Spotted Dog’. “You get summoned and off you go,” Mepham explained. The individuals that drop everything to man these vessels to save lives are all volunteers, private members of the community who give their time and dedication to aid that community. They come from all walks of life, and add their personal
skills and experience to the unit. Mackie, for example, recently graduated from the University of Toronto and wanted to volunteer her time. This led her to GAMRU. “I liked it so much, I stayed on for a second season,” she said. Mepham said that the volunteers come from a whole variety of backgrounds, from business people to civil servants from all over the region. Many are from Grimsby, but there are GAMRU volunteers from all over Niagara from Lincoln to St. Catharines and beyond. “We’re really reflective of the com-
munity we serve,” said Mepham. “Our volunteers are smart, work hard and are committed. That reflects well on their home communities. ”He added that GAMRU always encourages members of those communities to join them. “We take applications anytime,” he explained. “New members are brought in in September so they can get a full winter season of classroom training.” The organization helps recruits learn skills and earn certification for navigation, seamanship, search and rescue techniques, first aid See GAMRU, Page 9

They even train people with little to no boat experience. “We attract people who aren’t necessarily boaters,” Mepham said. “They have a mountain to climb, but it’s a real credit to these folks when they persevere, gain those skills and begin to contribute.” Apart from volunteering, community members and businesses can help support GAMRU’s work by donating to them. The organization receives no government funding. They do receive hourly fees from the Coast Guard Auxiliary when they answer emergencies, but this covers “less than a quarter” of GAMRU’s required budget according to Mepham. “The rest we have to fundraise,” he said. “Everything from equipment to upgrades to even just running the boat costs money.” To that end, the

Catharines Game & Fish Association which went towards upgrading GAMRU 240. “We’ve been very fortunate to receive that support,” Mepham said. However he added that donations from individuals are just as valuable.

And the commercial operations know their way around bylaws, and township roads. If a site is closed down after proper process is followed, contractors will post a sign at that site with the address of a new site and the process starts over again. To arm West Lincoln residents with information - should they consider bringing in fill or have issues with fill and trucking in their neighbourhood - the township will host an open house Tuesday, Aug. 13 at Caistor (Abingdon) Community Centre from 5-7 p.m. “We will provide information and answer any questions on site alterations,” said Treble.

Niagara Christian Gleaners send first shipment to Haiti Food to supply school nutrition program for children By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow In a world where food insecurity for so many exists in a disparate reality with the abundance of food that is produced and wasted, the Niagara Christian Gleaners are chopping, dicing, and dehydrating local surplus produce that would otherwise be thrown away. Crates brimming with purple eggplants and bright yellow peppers jostled for space on the chopping block at the Smithville plant last week. Washed and ready for drying, the nutritious vegetables lined dozens of stacked trays headed for the dehydrator and packaging in a mix ready for urgent calls to supply crisis needs both at home and around the globe. General manager
Pete Wierenga calls it a small part of a complex problem. But what they have accomplished in one short year is nothing short of a miracle. Their first large food aid shipment has arrived in Haiti and the Gleaners are celebrating what is a testament to the mission’s purpose. It’s a significant milestone. Since September, the Gleaners have processed 1.8 million servings and of that total, 250,000 servings loaded on eight pallets were included in the container that went to Haiti. “This food will be part of a school nutrition program where they feed 1,000 children a day,” Wierenga said. “This is something to celebrate as it feels like the final piece of our mission’s puzzle. Everything
from dreaming the concept of Niagara Christian Gleaners, raising the funds, building and equipping a brand new food plant, processing more than 500,000 pounds of donated produce is culminating in this first food aid shipment,” Wierenga said. “We began dreaming about this three years ago.” The non-profit charitable organization started growing, raising funds and support for the idea. The land was purchased in 2017 and construction started in April 2018. They raised $2.8 million for building and equipping the 15,000 sq. ft. plant and they were debt free when the doors opened September 29, 2018. Production was running by December 1. The way Wierenga

describes it, the business model is skewed. “We only have expenses. We have nothing to sell so we’re depending on people to love what they’re doing and help pay the bills every month.” The plant is volunteerdriven, about 200 volunteers working every week, with expenses covered by ongoing contributions. Statistics show that only 34 of 100 people in the world have enough food. Eight people die of hunger every 90 seconds, while one-third of the world’s food goes to waste. One-third of the food in Canada is wasted. “Most consumers don’t realize what waste we have here, perfectly good fruits and vegetables,” Wierenga said. “The need is there and it’s being filled by a ministry that saves what would otherwise be lost.” The produce arrives at the plant by the truckloads. The Gleaners have developed a network with farmers, distributors and transportation companies to take produce which is not up to grade. News Now • Thursday, August 1, 2019 • Page 15 HAITI From Page 14 distributors. “Our typical donor sends us a truck load at a time.” “A plant like this creates awareness of the shift in our cultural thinking about food.” An interesting development Wierenga said the top down legislation in some countries that is moving grocers towards zero food waste policies. “It will be a game changer to start meeting needs and a plant like this is perfectly positioned to be a recipient of some of that food that comes as a donation.” The Smithville plant has the largest batch dehydrator they could buy and can dry 1,400 trays of food in an 18hour period. “We work with partner organizations. The food is given to us, we process it with volunteers and donor money, and we give it all away.” The partner organizations look after the distribution, raise the funds to send containers world wide. “They are accountable to us in that the food does not get sold but goes, for ex-
ample, to the school nutrition program in Haiti.” Shipments can range in size and destination, from around the corner to the local food bank, to northern communities or continents around the globe. The produce we make is ideal for sending as one of the greatest obstacles is logistics to our northern communities, the cost of transition. The produce is lightweight and can fill a bush plane with thousands of servings. The Gleaners have had no government funding to date. The plant was built on donations and equipped with machinery such as the tow motor through the generosity of suppliers. “A lot of grief rolls into my art, but also a lot of joy,” she said. “They’re my guard-

Cole learned to sew from her Aunt Opal as a child, but she didn’t take up quilt fabric art until much later. “I had no intention of making quilts, which seemed old fashioned,” she said. This all changed when she took a quilting class in 1997. There she was “bitten by the bug and never looked back.” The Guardian Spirits show commemorates the memories of her family members and more, who have since passed on. It also honours the memory of Cole’s dearest friend, Dinah, and her family. Cole was very close to them and refers to them as her “family of the heart.

In her work, fabric is her paint, and each stitch is a new brush stroke. “I’ve always been attracted to the tactile feel of fabric art,” Cole said. “Fabrics are like paint for me. I also like that you can make use of irregular edges, which is something you can’t do with paint and canvas.” Much of Cole’s work has been displayed at Grimsby Public Art Gallery. She currently has most of her pieces at her first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB). The show is entitled ‘Guardian Spirits’. Grimsby council votes to support Pathstone’s mental health program The Town of Grimsby getting on board for the “Hear and Now” initiative. At Monday’s meeting, council approved committing $20,000 to Pathstone Mental Health to bring its on-demand counselling program to Grimsby. Pathstone CEO Shaun Baylis and Grimsby Benevolent Fund executive director Stacy Elia provided council with an overview of the project and background
for the need of a mental health walkin clinic. The ‘Hear & Now’ program offers free drop-in counselling for youth aged 17 and under with no need for a health cards. The program is already available in special clinics throughout the Niagara Region including St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls, Port Colborne and Fort Erie. Lincoln’s Town Council passed a similar ap-
proval last month. Pathstone is looking for an office in Grimsby in which to operate this program once a week. The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) estimated that mental illness and disorders affect between 1020 percent of Canadian youth. The organization also said that only one in every five minors who need mental health services receives them.

Serious commitment Hat’s off to the Rotary Club of Lincoln this week after the group made a $100,000 commitment to Cave Springs Camp this week. That is a huge undertaking, clearly, and a rarity for any service club in this day and age. Legacy projects such as this were much more common back in the day, when service organizations had time and energy stockpiled with huge membership bases. The Lions Pool in Grimsby and the Beamsville Lions Community Park are two examples of major contributions from the past which are still enjoyed today. In another 30, 40 or 50 years those in the community will recognize this week’s Rotary contribution in a similar manner. The Lincoln Rotary Club is not big, but they are mighty! And good on them. The community is much better this week than it was last thanks to service clubs who do great things over and over again. M.W.
Don’t underestimate lack of parking’s impact Let’s get beyond all the trials and tribulations we’ve been reliving over and over in this space for months and deal with something which is near and dear to everyone’s heart - parking. Parking is like health care. When it is there and available you may utilize it but you really don’t “notice” it. But when it isn’t there, step aside because someone is going to be upset. Parking is important to every single resident in every community - although definitely magnified in the urban areas. You rural folk would certainly notice if you are coming into Grimsby on a market Thursday, or are behind a transport trying to turn left onto King after coming down Mountain in Beamsville. People will park “for a moment” where those northside parking spots used to be and that causes havoc for the big rigs. It is interesting to see some of the commercial is starting to pop up in the Winston Road area. Not much, but a couple of spots. The first thing people have said who tried to go out there, “there’s nowhere to park”. Heck, we knew that when the site plans for those developments were getting rolled out years ago. The die is cast there, I’m afraid. Lincoln has known all too well about its parking limitations in Beamsville. They are trying to get a solid foundation for a new look, new direction for downtown there but nothing will make significant headway until parking is grown three-fold from what is there. That is a major reason Lincoln council wanted the high school change to happen even though it meant losing Beamsville District Secondary. The Town will buy that
MIKE WILLISCRAFT site and a ton of parking will be part of anything that happens on that parcel of land. Smithville’s parking is limited at best. It was a blow to several core businesses when on-street parking was taken away a few years ago. Those are precious. The main commerce has shifted there from its main street (Hwy 20 and Station Street to The Village Square mall. Odd a strip mall will dominate a downtown core but that is the power of parking, ease of access and convenience. That latter trio can win out over price and product, meaning people will go to a store and pay more if it is easier to get in and out. If you think about it, I am quite sure everyone reading these ramblings can think of an occasion when they have done exactly that. I sure have. Grimsby’s commercial core is different in size and scope but the heart of the issue is the same - access and number of spots. Grimsby has more than 1,100 downtown parking spaces. A number that boggles many, but that is what the inventory states. Even with all that, it is not unusual - in fact it is a weekly occurrence - to see cars literally parked in the intersection of Main and
Elm Street while someone runs in to pick up pizza or Chinese food. And I don’t begrudge the eatery owners this phenomenon one bit. There is no place to park with quick proximity - another word for convenience - unless you want to park in the Grimsby Benevolent Fund parking lot or on the west side of Ontario and hike up the road. Even though the barren Pics Plus site is NOT a parking lot and has remnants sticking out of the ground, people still park there because it is closer to where they want to go. It is not necessarily lazy, it really is human nature. For Grimsby, despite its seeming abundance of parking in the core, it needs to keep a weather eye on all projects to ensure there is sufficient parking - if not more than sufficient. Downtown cannot be sacrificed the way Winston Road was with density winning out over common sense when it comes to what should be included in any site plan for parking. For more than 10 years I have been espousing going higher to save more greenspace and I would allow another storey downtown to allow for more parking where possible as well. Parking is part of any neighbourhoods ecosystem - whether it be a residential area or commercial core. If it gets overlooked there is no turning back or a way to make it up as each development has its own guidelines for parking based on usage and size/scope. West Lincoln bought parking space a few years ago, Lincoln will do that with the BDSS site and Grimsby needs to keep focus stay ahead of the curve in the downtown core.
