Sessanta touring event drives big cash for WLMH By Tristan Marks NewsNow Sessanta Miglia’s sixth year will be one to remember. The annual exotic car rally which starts each year at Grimsby’s Peach King Arena had a banner year when it comes to fundraising with a local resident adding to the pot in support of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Donor Blair McKeil added $100,000 to the coffers and issued a challenge to West
Niagara’s businesses to come up with a total pledge that either matches or exceeds his commitment by Labour Day. “We raised either $125,000 or $225,000 depending on how enthusiatically our local businesses get behind Blair’s challenge,” said event organizer Rob Hattin. “We already have some businesses showing interest in meeting the challenge.” The Sessanta Miglia See SESSANTA, Page 6

Tourism sector funds to aid new Lincoln course By Tristan Marks NewsNow Lincoln’s tourism industry has received a much-needed financial booster shot. Niagara Economic Development has secured and awarded $2 million in direct funding from The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to support Niagara’s tourism industry in its recovery from COVID-19. Lincoln has secured $500,000 from this
amount to support its tourism-based businesses. Lincoln economic development officer Paul DiIanni said the Town worked with the Region’s COVID recovery team to get this financial support for 41 of its tourism-based businesses. “Our town’s tourism industry was hit hard by COVID,” he said. “Knowing that FedDev had a recovery fund, the ERRT advocated to get that money.” The funding provided
167 tourism-dependent businesses across Niagara with up to $20,000 in non-repayable contributions to support costs associated with adapting and eventually reopening, such as space renovations and retrofits, purchase of equipment and fixtures, personal protective equipment, and support for technology and digitization. The funding supports costs to equip businesses to meet Public Health guidelines and protocols, including:
• Purchase of PPE and cleaning supplies for workers; • Accommodation of social distancing (expansion of restaurant patio space, pick-up windows or curbside pick-ups for retailers, secondary entry/ exit to allow physical distancing, and equipment to extend the outdoor dining season; • Implementation of technology and digital tools to allow tourism operators to enable processes like virtual queues and timed en-
try ticketing. Lincoln was able to ensure a full quarter of the grant given to the Niagara Region by working directly with its businesses to set up their requests. “It’s really a reflection of how much our economy depends on tourism,” DiIanni said. These 41 businesses represent a diverse range of industries. Recipients include wineries, restaurants, breweries, jewellers, farm stands and more. “We were even able
to give support to the Downtown Bench BIA with these funds,” said Lincoln tourism coordinator Britnie Bazylewski. Bazylewski said that although many businesses were able to kickstart their recoveries and adaptation thanks to this investment, there is still “more work to come” to help Lincoln’s tourism sector. “We’re getting there,” she said. “But we’re not there just yet.”

$2M youth skills grant to provide economic base By Tristan Marks NewsNow Lincoln youth looking to enter the workforce will get a much-needed leg up thanks to a $2 million grant from Ontario’s Skills Development Fund. The fund supports youth to prepare for work and employers with affordable access to talent and resources to help grow their businesses. The Town’s Economic Development Department will be using the funding to develop a Youth Skills Studio in partnership with Civiconnect, a non-profit organization that connects youth and the private sector to their communities to maximize their social impact through technology, innovation, and strategy. The Youth Skills Studio will begin by providing 60,000 hours of work-integrated learning to 90 youth aged 15-29 working on 75 initiatives for local businesses. These work-integrated learning projects will enable local businesses to connect with youth who will provide digital services for their businesses. Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton
said this program funding will help local businesses weather the storm of COVID-19 while preparing youth for upcoming job opportunities as the pandemic abates. “The pandemic has shown us that businesses are in need of digital innovation and education to ensure their survival and growth in 2021 and beyond,” said Easton. Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff said that the pandemic has created several challenges to the workforce, this partnership will help rebuild the local economy through its skillbase. “This partnership demonstrates our government’s commitment to working with local partners to build a highly skilled and competitive workforce, and will ensure our province remains the engine of Canada’s economy,” said Oosterhoff. Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos says that even before COVID-19, the town eyed youth employment as a key element to economic growth and success. “The pandemic has further compounded youth unemploy-
ment and underemployment, and we look forward to tackling this issue with the Youth Skills Studio here in Lincoln,” said Kirkopoulos. “We envision this program to have positive, long-term impacts on both the local and regional economy and the local labour force, by providing skills training here in Lincoln and opportunities for local businesses to benefit from local talent. “ While the first wave of training is in progress, additional training is available in sessions taking place Sept. 13–Dec. 24 and Jan. 10–April 22, 2022. Participants are each paid approximately $10,000 during the program. “While we’ve committed to helping 90 youth, we’re going to go above that number,” said Kirkopoulos. “We will be looking to extend the program longer than anticipated through potential future funding opportunities.” The first cohort is wrapping up, but those who fall into the qualifying age range can reach out to Lincoln town hall through Cameron Rotz at: rotz@lincoln.ca or to Civiconnect at: info@civiconnect.ca

SESSANTA From Page 1 itself was well-attended with exotic cars, their drivers and sightseers there to view the motored menangerie. “The turn out was fabulous, 90 per cent of the people here were from out of town and they came here to support the hospital.,” said Hattin. “The exotic car cul-
ture is pretty strong, and this is also one of the first post-Covid events in Canada. There’s pent-up energy.”
The drivers followed a route through Grimsby to the Bench Brewery in Lincoln where they enjoyed a special luncheon.

At a time when all charities need an extra boost, The Mayor’s 2021 Charity Golf Tournament - co-hosted with Lincoln Chamber of Commerce (LCC) - stepped up once again, this year raising nearly $42,000. Of the total, nearly $13,500 will go to local charities. Incident a good teaching moment Like any community newspaper, the NewsNow team love to cover all the great things in our communities. That is the easy, the fun, part of the job. There is also a regular dose of uneasy. Items which push everyone out of their comfort zone. Such an instance arose last week in Smithville - as you can see, good reader, on the facing page. It was interesting - in speaking to mother of the young lad who was the victim in this incident - that she wanted to focus on the positive which, to her, was the community coming together to help out in many ways. Good on the neighbour who took the boy in, offered refuge and had him wait for the arrival of his parents. Some people choose to look the other way and not get involved. It’s great to see that mentality has not permeated Smithville. There is no need to go on about the incident, but it is important for residents to know it occurred. A good teaching moment for parents and kids in terms of awareness. Most wouldn’t think such things happen in their town, but they do, likely daily, just not this extreme M.W.
Get your hipwaders, the wave is coming People in Lincoln who think they are seeing development pressure now have not seen anything yet. The tidal wave of building has come around the lake from Burlington, crushed Stoney Creek and completely changed the look and feel for much of Grimsby - with more to come. For Lincoln to feel and see what Grimsby is getting right now will take another 10-15 years. Grimsby will be built out by then or final “open” spaces will be committed to late planning stages. At that point, in-fill mania will take over the town more than now. Lincoln’s bonfire of development is just getting lit. Residents are paying attention. I have heard from several of them - some regular “commentators” but most are regular folk just concerned about what may be coming down the pipe in their neighbourhood. And rightfully so! I can tell you now, it won’t be pretty and it won’t be what you want. Twenty years ago Grimsby councillors looked at Stoney Creek and laughed, lauding their community for its look and feel. Now, the Winston Road planning disaster is Stoney Creek. To be clear, as I have noted many times, municipalies’ hands are collectively tied and residents’ wants and needs get washed away by the flow of intensification washing over their community. The rules are set to downtown Toronto standards and the rest of Ontario gets to eat it. So, when you plan to attend a meeting and rail on council, choose carefully what council can actually do something about. There are also many lessons for Lincoln to learn about what NOT to do. First and foremost, have
MIKE WILLISCRAFT some intestinal fortitude. Some members of Grimsby council are completely willing to listen to one set of “experts” (see paid consultants) to adopt an opinion which greases the track for buildings too high, consistently short-sighted parking deficiencies, compromised height issues and neighbourhood compatibility problems. If your council is not willing to push back on developers, you’re toast. If you hear truly stupid comments like, “We need to push this through. Mr. X has waited long enough”, be prepared to see a 19-storey condo next to your house. Some Grimsby councillors actually think because a project has been in the works for a year or two, it should be approved. Duration of an application should not be on the table for project approval. Where Lincoln is different from Grimsby is the diversity of areas where they will see major projects. Like all municipalities in the Golden Horseshoe, Greenbelt has capped where things can be done. In Beamsville, Ontario Street will be a major commercial/condo corridor - dare I say it - similar to Winston Road in Grimsby. And that is how it should be. Yes, that’s right, it is how the community should be developed. It’s good planning. But, what Lincoln can do that Grimsby did not, is pay
attention to all planning principles. Parking, parking, parking. That is number one as it affects so many elements of the new build properties themselves but also the surrounding areas. When you are grossly underserviced for parking your commercial tenants cannot get space for their clients and residents can’t get space to park when they come home. Height can be an issue, of course, as can density. All can be managed, BUT you have to have a council that will stand up and be prepared to negotiate (fight is not the right word) for the community they serve. Development has gotten too adversarial. These companies are not bad (although some definitely do play well with others in the sandbox). Most times, they are simply playing by the rules they are given. Various councils develop a reputation for who waves the green flag and says “come do what you want”, while others push back, get concessions and end up with a build much more in line with community standards. It will all be a key election issue in 2022. In Grimsby, it will be more of a damage done debate, while Lincoln residents will want to hear from candidates who are ready to establish a line they don’t want to be crossed. And don’t think West Lincoln is being forgotten about. They think they’re laughing with skyrocketing home values and steady growth. I mentioned to candidates prior to 2018’s election, they should look at well-planned hi-rise development NOW to preserve parkland and greenspace. So far that has not happened and in 50 years they will wish they had because the same wave hitting Grimsby and coming to Lincoln will envelope Smithville as well in 20-30 years.

Good comes from nasty Smithville incident A resident whose home backs on the park area saw everything transpire. It was also caught on security cameras at the community centre. “The neighbour came out and took him back to their place, gave him some ice, and he called home. I would really like to say, this town really came together to help us out when it
was needed. Several people came forward to help identify the boys, and the neighbour was just great,” said the victim’s mom. “I also thank all the other teens who told their parents who the boys were, the ones who willing talked to the police and the ones who just called or texted my son to check up on him and wish him
well and say they were there for him.” “I just want others to know we have a lot of good teens too if that is possible because that is helping my son get through this more than they know.” As a result of the incident, two young offenders are expected to face charges later this month. By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Charges will be laid against two youths after a Smithville boy was swarmed, knocked to the ground and punched resulting in a fractured nose and cheek bone last Tuesday, Aug. 3. The ordeal started with the boy being teased as he walked with a friend by the Wade Road bridge. A group of boys approached the victim, pushing him and “smacking him behind the head,” said the victim’s mother. Later that evening, the victim had gone over to the skatepark and spotted the group of boys again, hiding behind a pole to avoid them. When he tried to run, the group of boys disappeared, but had only gone to get bikes and scooters, said the victim’s mom. “This time they circled him, knocked his cell phone to the ground when he tried to call home and told him he could get it back if he kissed one boy’s feet,” said the victim’s mom. “He didn’t know the other boys and had never had an altercation like this before. He does not remember much after he got hit.”
