Coffee on at Domenic’s one last time Saturday By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow One haircut at a time, Domenic Barbatano has been taking good care of the people in Beamsville, inside and out, for almost half a century. The well loved barber is retiring and this Saturday, April 27, he will open the downtown shop for a final day of business. The news has travelled fast and the reaction from the community has been emotional. Three generations, fathers who have brought their sons and now their grandchildren, many who had their first ‘big boy’ haircuts in Domenic’s swivel chair, feel like they are losing a good friend. Domenic’s Barber Shop & Hair Styling has been one of Beamsville’s finest civic forums, a trusted place where confidences were safely shared - a place to just talk - families, sports, politics and news of the
Beloved barber closes door on nearly 50 years in downtown Beamsville Town mixed with the familiar smells of fresh lather, tonics and soap. “It has been very emotional for him,” said Domenic’s wife Aida. “He can’t believe how people are reacting to the news.” Their three daughters, Rosey, Angela and Gabriella will open the shop with their dad Saturday morning. It will be one tough day. There’s going to be a big empty space in the heart of Beamsville. “I came from Italy in 1968 and worked in Niagara Falls before moving to Beamsville,” Domenic said. Engaged at the time, he returned
to Italy in 1970 to marry his sweetheart Aida. He brought her to Canada and they built a rich life together, working hard and raising three beautiful daughters. “The Town was very small then,” Domenic said. “The Town has been very good to me.” Hairstyles changed over the years, but Barbatano’s unwavering kind and gentle personality remains the same. The McDonald family remembers the kindness and patience he showed especially to the youngest of their four boys who has special
needs. Domenic had a natural touch that kept the busy little guy in the chair at least for a few swipes of the scissors. He never charged for a single haircut until the little boy was six and learned to sit for the entire cut. “Always that same smile, that pleasantness, so unassuming, just a wonderful man,” said Ken Frid. “He’s my Christian brother.” Frid has been driving from Grimsby for the past 25 years for a haircut. Forty-eight years barbering in Beamsville, a couple of years in Niagara Falls and about 10 years in Italy before moving to Canada 60 years is one successful career and Domenic is going to miss early mornings opening the shop. But he will have more time to spend with his five grandchildren. “All my customers have become See DOMENIC’S, Page 2

Jeffery’s Greenhouses welcomes local producers By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Preparing, propagating, planting, pruning….. it’s a rare afternoon local greenhouse growers can take the time to tour someone else’s facility. But twice a year, three local sponsors including Zwart Systems, Berger, and Verhoef Electric bring the horticultural community together to network and catch up with their equally hardworking neighbours. Jeffery’s Greenhouses hosted the ‘Grower Meet & Greet’ April 10 at its Jordan Station location. About 150 producers toured the greenhouse, a fair hike considering the facility’s two plants cover more than one million sq. ft. of growing space. “It’s a chance for growers to network and see another green-
-house,” said event sponsor Andrew Van Geest of Zwart Systems in Beamville. It was also an opportunity to talk about the industry-wide impact of labour and energy costs as grow-
-ers face the challenge to cover cost increases and offer products at reasonable prices. Jeffery’s Greenhouses, a third generation family business is a leading grower and supplier of

Is your mortgage coming due this Spring? Let’s (not) talk rate! When shopping for a fixed-rate mortgage, most people
focus on the interest rate, with no careful scrutiny of the mortgage contract terms and conditions. But, did you know that there are actually two interest rates attached to every mortgage contract? I refer to these two equally-important rates as “the rate going in”, and “the rate going out”. “The rate going in” is the rate that gets the most attention and discussion; “The rate going out” is the rate used to calculate the prepayment penalty, should you break the mortgage prior to its maturity date. Two interesting facts: - a “5-year fixed-term” mortgage is the term of choice for most homebuyers and existing homeowners; - 70% of “5-year fixed-term” mortgages are broken after 3 years & 7 months for unplanned life events such as divorce, job loss, and illness. Before you sign for what you think is a great 5-year fixed rate with your bank or credit union, ask what the “rate going out” is. And, make sure that you understand how this rate is used to calculate the penalty. Any perceived savings of a low-rate offer could possibly cost you much more in penalties, should your plans change before the 5-year term is completed. I offer you expert mortgage advice, term lengths from 6 months to 10 years, and unique mortgage solutions from over 20 mortgage providers, including the large banks and local credit unions. When you work with me, you are guaranteed that we will have the “rate going out” discussion! The best part - There is no cost to you for my service, as I am compensated by the lenders for bringing them your business. Talk to us. You’ll be impressed.

Late flurry lifts boy to hockey pool win He did it all himself. His mom said so. Benjamin Roller became the youngest winner of NewsNow’s Hat Trick Hockey Pool with a late flurry in the last week to give him a two-point win – with 1.537 points - over second place finisher Jeff Visentin, 1,535 points. Cory Van Roon took third, 1,522 points. “He did all his own picks, said Benjamin’s mom, Kristy. “His big brother tried to give him some advice, but he said, ‘no, I like this guy’.” Key to Benjamin’s win was a six-point final week from his favourite player on his favourite team, Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov. With his win, Benjamin (and his parents) had a choice to take a trip for two to a playoff game, or $1,500 in cash, courtesy of Grand Prize sponsor Grimsby Ford. Wanting to get a Nerf gun, he took the cash. Visentin and Van Roon both get gift certificates for Giant Tiger Grimsby for $200 and $50 respectively.

Lacrosse launch May 5 By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow The LLA Lacrosse Association invites the community to join them Saturday, May 5 for the official launch of the rebranded association’s premier season at the Peach King Centre in Grimsby. It’s a free family event for all ages and an exciting day of exhibition game action. All divisions will be showcased in exhibition games vs Six Nations Lacrosse Association starting at 10 a.m. in the arena with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. There will be lots of activities for everyone including lacrosse-themed obstacle courses. Association vicepresident Chantelle Shaver wants to increase involvement and community awareness of the sport across West Niagara. “We are hoping to bring out the community to cheer the games,” she said. “These little guys will be putting their hearts and souls into playing the exhibition games for the community. Come out to cheer them on.” The mother of two young boys playing the sport, Shaver said lacrosse is a great complement to the hockey they play in the winter and keeps them active through the spring and summer. “The physical exercise and training really builds on their hockey skills.” The May 5 launch is planned to bring families together to enjoy a day of sports and social interaction. Families can bring a food item to support Food4Kids Niagara.

Must-haves for an amazing kitchen remodel Kitchen remodels are among the most popular home renovation projects, whether they consist of swapping out cabinet hardware or doing major demolition. When investing in a kitchen project, it is important to incorporate items that are coveted. · Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables you to soak dishes in one side and then wash on the oth-
er. It also makes it easy to wash and prep produce for meals. · Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there’s something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some wellplaced bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. · Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to include stor-

This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area. Kitchen remodels are exciting to envision, and several choices can make these hightraffic spaces even more coveted.

Spring cleaning and bugs Spring cleaning is a ritual in many homes, though some might be forgetting to address an area of their homes that can be especially vulnerable to insect infestations. According to PestWorld.org, kitchen cabinets and pantries used to store spices and baking items, such as flour, can make for inviting hideouts for various types of pests. These unwelcome guests include beetles, Indian meal moths and ants. To remedy this issue or prevent insects from becoming an issue, discard stale spices or dated baking items. Once such items have
been removed from the cabinets and pantry and discarded, wipe down the interior of the spaces before installing fresh shelf paper. If the critters didn’t make their presence known in the cabinets, that doesn’t mean they haven’t made your kitchen home over the winter. Some might have opted to spend their winters behind appliances, including the stove and the refrigerator. As a result, it’s best to pull these appliances off the wall each spring, sweeping or vacuuming the dust and crumbs you find before mopping the floors.

Crickets!
Look at this people, noon last Thursday, Mountain Street in Grimsby and nary a vehicle in site. It is glorious for some, but surely a pain for many. Cars welcome! A mountain access for truck diversion cannot come soon enough, though.
Peach Kings back home Sunday Grimsby Peach Kings are turning in a banner performance this year and there are just a couple of games left. If you’re a hockey fan and have not had a chance to see the club, this Sunday - for Game 4 of the Schmalz Cup finals - will be a great opportunity. They dropped Game 1 last Friday 2-0 with Napanee Raiders tallying an empty netter to seal the deal. Napanee has only lost four game all season...that is before Game 3. Back Home on Easter Sunday, the Peach Kings controlled the game from the outset, handing the Raiders their first defeat in any round of the playoffs. With Game 3 in Napanee Friday, Game 4 at PKC at 2 p.m. this coming Sunday promises to be a barn burner. Napanee is beatable, but Grimsby has to take control of its own destiny, which is a nice way of saying, “stay out of the penalty box”. If they do that, they will earn themselves and the community another provincial Jr. C title. M.W.
One more chance for egg hunters I had to check with a couple of the Grimsby Kinsmen who have been involved with the club for 50 years or so, as I did not recall the Easter Egg hunt ever having to be called on account of rain. This past Friday’s did, and it was a good call. West Lincoln moved their Good Friday hunt indoors at the community centre. The Kinsmen and Kinettes have rescheduled their event for this Saturday, April 27 with the same times across the board. The rose garden at Centennial Park will be the scene and area behind Nelles School will be set up with a barbecue and draws for 12:30 p.m. The first hunt will go at 1 p.m. Enjoy! ******* Back when my kids would listen to me, I tried to instill the one sage piece of advice my father was able to provide me with when I was an impressionable youth. Simply, whatever you choose for a career, make sure you like it because you will be doing it for a long time. That is the core truth of it. Yes, there are peripheral circumstances around it like, you better enjoy what you choose for university, because, “We’re spending our retirement on your education”, not to mention of the years of investment and effort. That sentiment, or even notion, that – whatever one chooses as a career path as a youth will be one’s career for life – has changed drastically. The last study I saw noted most people will have three different jobs during their work life. For someone to do something for 50 years takes dedication and, undoubtedly, a love for what they do.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT So Beamsville’s Domenic Barbatano deserves a lot of credit for being a stalwart on the main street of his community for nearly five decades. Being a barber would not be unlike a day in our office. When the door opens you have no idea what kind of story will walk through. When Domenic spoke of missing his customers - and I am sure he has scores of people whom he trimmed when they were children who are now bringing in grandchildren - upon his retirement this Saturday, I am certain he will miss those customers and the stories with which they came in. On behalf of those you have served these many years, and your community as whole, I offer thanks and best wishes, sir! ******* As happens in our office on a shockingly regular basis, deadline conversation turned to some funny topics this week, one being fanny packs. I have a very good friend I’ve known him over 40 years and he was my best man when I got married - who was all about fanny packs for a time...a long time. I never got it, but to each his own. My buddy, Glen, was undaunted by what I will call
good-natured ribbing but it was relentless. Back in my college days, we would trundle off to my brother’s in Detroit for a lost concert weekend or a Lions or Tigers game. There would be Glen, fanny pack proudly affixed. More piling on, and our American friends were much more harsh lemme tell ya, but it all made no dent in our little Glen. I always admired that stubbornness as it served him well in all areas of his life. It was a good lesson. ******* We also had a hilarious, if not sad, conversation about a proposed change in law in the U.S. where children up to age 12 would have to continue to use booster seats in cars. Now, nothing would surprise me with the “bubble wrap” generation of kids getting older. It would not surprise me if dipping the children in Purel before strapping them into those boosters would become part of that law. The over-legislating of what is best for the citizenry has just gotten ridiculous. It started about 10 years ago, but it has picked up speed. I’m not even going to get into this distracted driving junk because it has been set up at a motherhood issue. Sure, people fiddling with phones or texting while driving is dangerous behaviour. Scarfing lunch while going from one appointment to another is just Thursday, routine. There is no line any more. Politicians will often consider anything if it earns them one vote or shuts the mouths of a powerful lobby. It’s painful. Meanwhile, it’s taken 30 years to get any attention for the dangers of downtown truck traffic. Let’s get our priorities straight, people.

Students need a safe place to learn and grow Dear Editor, Would you send your child to a birthday party: • where there are two adults supervising 28 (or more) children? • where the host parents/guardians are wearing Kevlar vests or arm protectors? • where an adult may be punched - in the face or elsewhere? • where there are FIVE children who need oneon-one assistance with toileting and behaviour but only one of their aides could come? Oh
yes, one of these five children is a runner, so there is no extra help at all for the other four. • where the room may be evacuated at any moment because one of the young guests is trashing the room?
• where the host adults cry at the end of the party because they just could not offer a safe and fun environment for all the children? In too many classrooms in Ontario your children experience sit-
Traffic lights at Park would help Dear Editor, Last time Mountain Road closed for rework, a temporary stop light was placed at Park Road/Reg. Rd. 82 intersection. uations like these every day. Contact Education Minister Lisa M. Thompson; MPP Sam Oosterhoff, Parliamentary Assistant for the Minister of Education, and; Premier Doug Ford. Invite them to partner with education workers to offer funding for what every child deserves: a safe environment to learn and to grow into the best person each child can be. Gayle Cornell Schaming Grimsby
A lot riding on current PC term for WLMH: writer Dear Editor, As I write this, it is a dreary, wet, Good Friday but there appears to be a small ray of sunshine on the horizon for WLMH. Much of that glint of hope is a result of the “stick-to-it” commitment by many, including Mr. Joosse to health care provision in a new WLMH for all of us in Niagara West. Christine Elliott’s $27 billion/10-year commitment (under Bill 74, which is in Third Reading) to the building of new hospitals is great. However, and not wanting to throw a wet blanket on the interminable dream, we in West Lincoln have been down this road twice over the past 20+ years only to see a change in the winds of political power. All of you over the
age of 50 have seen this, as well. Will the passage of Bill 74 provide Minister Elliott the tools to end HHS head Rob MacIsaac’s reign. MacIsaac and his butchers need to be taken down. Period. My only hope is that support of MPP Oosterhoff on the Conservative Party inside will carry the day and we will see “Shovels in the Ground” at WLMH before the next provincial election. If not, I won’t be comfortable holding out hope for a new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Much good continues from our new council, including dealing with the dumping of out-of-town fill on Grimsby’s mountain, and elimination of the horrendous trucks on
Mountain Road. For that, and for their continued efforts at bringing Grimsby back to legal order, I think residents need to be grateful. I know we are. So, “The Sun will
come out tomorrow” and we will all bask in the coming real Spring. Sincere thanks to NewsNow, and council for helping clear the skies. Bud Hightower

Careful with the acronyms: readers Dear Editor, My husband and I thoroughly enjoy reading your newspaper every week. We find your editorials most compelling and insightful as you speak on behalf of many of us and say what many of us are thinking. Although we do enjoy reading your newspaper, one of our pet peeves is trying to figure out what acronyms stand for. For example in this week’s editorial, you make reference to NDA. We had to look it up (thank goodness for Google) to find out it meant non-disclo-
sure agreement. It would be most helpful if acronyms were spelled out somewhere in the article so readers can refer back to its meaning. Perhaps even bolding or italicizing what the acronym stands for the first time it is mentioned in the article so readers can find it easily rather than re-reading the entire article might make it easier for us to refer back. Other than that, we thank you and your staff for keeping us in the “know” on what’s happening in our little town. Danny and Nicole Ritz
