All words anyone would use to characterize the horrific news that Riley Dunda –– a strapping, handsome, 18-year-old Grimsby teen had suffered what was a lifethreatening stroke. Saturday, May 3 was like any other in the Dunda household. Father Richard had gone off the gym. His family awoke after an evening of hosting friends at their Main Street East home. While at the gym, Richard got a call with news that changed the life of the Dunda family. “Riley was home and he’d had a stroke or a bad seizure of some kind,” recalled Richard, who organized his things and headed straight for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. From that point on, he said, “about 100 things went perfectly well. Otherwise, Riley
would be dead.” The stroke was caused by a tear in Riley’s carotid artery. A clot formed and eventually cut off blood flow to his brain. “We have no idea what caused the tear or when,” noted Richard. Riley, a member of the Hamilton Red Wings, had been focused singularly on getting in peak shape with one goal in mind. “He worked out every day for hours. Scouts had told him he had a good chance at a U.S. university scholarship if he could improve his speed by a halfstep,” said Richard. Between weights and speed drills in the laneway, Riley has got himself in great shape and that works in his favour as he starts a new chapter in his life. And that is just how his family is looking at this new circumstance, a new challenge on life’s path. See RILEY, Page 2

From Page 1 “You have to decide early on how you are going to deal with it,” said Richard. “Riley was on a path and his path got changed. He is on a new path. My wife (Linda) and I certainly have our moments but you have to decide how to move forward.” “We have always told our kids it is what you do with what you have and look to the future.” And that future is considerably brighter than 12 days ago.
Richard attributes expert medical care to giving his son a chance to regain his life. “The people at West Lincoln did an awesome job to stabilize him and care for him as best they could. When he was transferred to Hamilton General, we had two great doctors, one who had created an experimental machine.” That machine, essentially, was used to enter Riley’s artery and remove the clot. Just a few of the things that broke
well for Riley were the fact his mom was a nurse and recognized he had had a stroke or seizure right off; the family lived a few hundred yards from WLMH; an ambulance was there in minutes; one-in-1,000 people have an extra set of blood vessels in the front of their brain and Riley is one of them so they supplied some oxygen when his supply was cut off; at Hamilton General, two specialists were able to work their magic,

ule, extended family, friends and his hockey family have also rallied to his side –– so much so the hospital had to suggest the number of visitors be cut back. “That is very tough. We have had so much support the hockey guys have been great. It is very hard to tell them we cannot let them in sometimes, but they understand,” said Richard. That team extends all the way to Plymouth, Michigan where Riley’s 16-year-old brother Liam plays for the Jr. A

At this early stage in the former Grimsby Secondary School student’s recovery, no goal other than getting him to where he can get to the hospital’s rehabilitation unit has been set. “We have gone from some truly horrendous time to seeing him up, in a chair and walking,” said Richard. “It’s really great to see, but these things can be impossible to predict.” “We’re treating this just like a hockey game –– one shift at a time. I told Riley, ‘You didn’t learn to skate in one day. It takes a lot of work for a long time. You are on a new path now,” said Richard.

South Lincoln grad teaches art in his hometown Zach Silverthorne is back in the halls of South Lincoln High School, years after graduation. He now teaches the visual arts class at South Lincoln. Silverthorne was born and raised in Smithville, attending College Street School and then South Lincoln before heading to the University of Guelph where he studied fine arts and art history. “I like art and I’m
good at it. I’ve always excelled in the arts,” he explained. “Although I enjoyed it, I thought, ‘what am I going to do with it?’” He decided to pursue a teaching career, and graduated from D’Youville Teacher’s College. “I’m the oldest of five children, so I’ve always been a leader-type... Teaching was a great fit for me,” he explained. Silverthorne also
played football for the University of Guelph and was looking forward to coaching as well as teaching at the high school where he graduated. “I consider myself very lucky to be able to do two things I’m good at and I enjoy,” he said. He is now the head coach of the South Lincoln Bears football team. He admits, at first coming back to his
old high school took some getting used to. “At first it was a little weird being back here because people recognize me... Some of the people I went to high school with, I’m now teaching their kids,” he said. Working in the community he grew up in and now raises his own family in, makes him take a little more pride in his work, he said.

Monica Lewinsky is back in the news. As an intern at the White House in the mid 1990s, she became the most famous “other woman” in U.S. history. (In France where one mistress is not enough for the president, she would have to be demoted to the “other woman’s other woman.”) Monica has written an article about her notorious liaison with then President Bill Clinton for the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair. Excerpts of the magazine feature have gone viral as well as topping the evening newscasts of every major American TV network. There is so much interest in Monica Lewinsky’s story that Wolf Blitzer interrupted his nonstop, 69-day coverage of Malaysian Air Flight #370 now widely believed to be at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Monica’s Vanity Fair feature will appear just days before Hillary Clinton’s memoir hits the book stores. The title of Hillary’s book is Hard Choices which will now generate more bad jokes than I have room for in this column. Monica’s titillating and personal feature about her sexual affair with the famous president will hopefully be read by 6,6400,000 Americans so that ... they will finally leave her alone. If the magazine piece does not works, she’s planning to perform in a onewoman, musical on Broadway to get people to stop noticing her. Her payoff line in the article is “It’s time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress.” Well, now she wants to destroy it all! Back when it was about to be in-
WILLIAM THOMAS troduced as evidence in President Clinton’s impeachment process, he wanted to burn that stuff and she wanted to keep it!! The thrust of the article appears to be her beef with American feminists who failed to support her when the scandal broke publicly. Feeling she was sexually exploited by her presidential boss, Monica expected Betaty Friedan and Gloria Steinem to come out against this sort of workplace misdeed. The woman has a point. At the time the details of the affair - the cigar, the blue dress and the impeachment report - unleashed a torrent of lewd humour aimed mostly at the intern. All things being unequal as they were then and still are now, Bill Clinton comes away looking like an aging lothario and Monica Lewinsky is stuck with the curse of being “a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty.” There’s still no male equivalent for word “slut” in today’s dictionary. Bill Clinton on the other hand was able to weather the scandalous storm with great moral support from Jesse Jackson. Unfortunately when Jackson showed up at the White House with his girlfriend and staffer who happened to be pregnant with the married reverend’s child, the word ‘moral’ took a bit of a public flogging. The last time Monica Lewinsky was in the news, President Clinton, in order to get her off the front pages of American newspapers, fired off a couple of cruise missiles that destroyed an aspirin factory in Africa. I’m thinking if the intern’s story doesn’t fade away real soon, when Hillary becomes President of the United States, she’ll do the same thing only this time Monica Lewinsky will be strapped to one of the cruise missiles. Trixie’s hosting Fashion for Compassion event May 24 Trixie’s Boutique is hosting it’s 3rd annual fashion show, ‘Fashion for Compassion’ on Saturday, May 24. This year’s show will be held at the Syndicate Restaurant in Grimsby from 12-3 p.m. Proceeds will go to McNally House Hospice. “Many of our customers have had spouses or family members that have unfortunately had to use McNally House,” explained Trixie’s owner Bruna Callari. “I think we have all been touched by someone with a terminal illness and so it’s nice to give back to a place that provides great services for them.” McNally House is a residential setting that provides 24-hour specialized

abused women and children leave their abusive situations. The money we raised provided furnished, unclassified apartments in the Niagara Region, equipped with all personal care products. It also paid for food for the women and children. Tickets will be $60. You will get a three course meal with wine pairings from Rosewood Winery, while you enjoy checking out the latest spring and summer fashions from Trixie’s Boutique. GAMRU seeks dedicated volunteers

The Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit (GAMRU) is looking for volunteers who enjoy being out on the water and helping people. GAMRU was formed in 1988 and is best known for its dedication to on-the-lake rescue service for the protection of people bordering and using Southwestern Lake Ontario. Members are volunteers that make up a unit within the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. The unit provides 24-hour on call rescue service throughout the
boating season (April to October). GAMRU is based out of Forans Marina in Grimsby. Their dedicated area is from Fifty Point Marina in Stoney Creek to Port Dalhousie, but they can be sent anywhere in Lake Ontario if the need arises. In the last five years, GAMRU has responded to over 100 search incidents. They have two vessels: A rigid hulled inflatable Mark 5 with twin Yamaha 90 horsepower outboard engines, and a 34foot steel hulled
cutter powered by twin 317 horsepower diesel engines. Sean Coffey joined GAMRU in 2008. “I spent most of my life around boats and love being on the water. GAMRU was an opportunity to do something I enjoy,” he explained. “I was also interested in getting involved in something like this. I had thought about other services, but the Coast Guard Auxiliary seemed like the best fit for me.” See GAMRU, Page 11

From Page 10 Coffey described what it’s like to respond to a call. “It’s exciting. We can be called on to respond to any emergency that happens on the lake. It could be towing a disabled vessel back to port. It could be to rescue a vessel that has run aground, or it could be to search for missing or overdue boaters. And we respond no matter what the weather conditions are on the lake,” he explained. GAMRU is always looking for new crew members. Currently they have 12 vacant spots to be filled. Coffey said it’s a big commitment. Members must participate in weekly training (two hours every Wednesday night) from January to late October, and be available for calls at least one week a month from the end of April to October. The week you’re on call includes weekend training on the water. Weekend training can be anywhere from four to eight hours or more depending on the time of year and could also include participating in special events. GAMRU is a not-forprofit organization. They don’t receive funding from anyone. They rely on fundraising and donations to continue to operate. They pay for the maintenance, fuel and insurance on their vessels. In addition to the training commitment, members are also required to help with fundraising. Members also need to be within a 15-minute drive to Foran’s Marina in Grimsby. Learn about fashion during WWI at the Jordan Historical Museum. The museum is hosting a special talk on Saturday, May 24 at 1 p.m., featuring Pam
Mundy as she discusses fashion during WWI. Pam has been designing, creating and making historical costumes since she was 10 years old. She has costumed
over 30 major period productions winning four awards at Theater Ontario. Her skills were honed at Niagara College’s Theater Arts program. The talk will delve in to what designers were used, creativity, and what was popular

Dear Mom, I love you mom, but I’m ashamed to say I didn’t always appreciate you. When I was young, I’m sure I took you for granted. Since then I’ve seen so many moms make mistakes that you’d never do. Many of those mistakes involve not teaching strength of character. Funny thing is, it just came easy to you- you have that strength of character. Then there was that time recently when I got really angry with you because I thought I ‘lost’ you to pre-alzheimer’s. Your meds won’t stop it, just make it go slower. Then a wise person sug-
gested that I not only try to remember the good memories, but that I remember how I got to be where I am today. In other words, I’m basically a good person. Growing up mom, you were my champion, my greatest fan. You didn’t spoil me, but I really felt I was important to you. Mom, you made me who I am today and I really like me. And today, I’m, teaching my daughter to do for others what you did for me. Doing for others and liking yourself- perhaps that’s the secret of life. To you and other good mothers: Happy Mother’s Day!! Laughing is definitely the strongest connection my mom and I have.

She manages my schedule and reminds me of the things that lay ahead. I always love when she kisses me when I’m heading to the school bus and when she tucks me in for the night. Prevention best to fight crime Fighting crime can be a lot like fighting fires –– prevention is the best approach. Because of that, Niagara Regional Police Const. Dave Thiessen of District 8 has been busy. Thiessen is the detachment’s school resource officer. He spends a great deal of time in the schools speaking to students of all ages on a variety of topics. “There really is two sides to it, the pro-active information side and the police presence Const. “We just can’t afford the time to be on everyone’s committee, but we do want to assist people with their problems whenever possible.” He noted the department can be a bit of a catch-all for community issues, some they can have a major impact with, some they attempt to address as best as possible. “We are a bit of a social safety net. If we can, we’ll do our best to put a Band-Aid on something, but we can’t solve everything,” said Woods. One example where process was changed as a result of partnerships has been in the instance of calls where issues of mental health are apparent. “Now and officer and a public health nurse are dispatched before an incident can escalate. Our partnerships helps us a great deal with our grassroots policing,” said Woods.

West Lincoln hot spot for serious accidents Traffic patterns and motor vehicle accidents are always a top concern for Niagara Regional Police. Of late, the department has put even more focus on the matter as Niagara West, record for serious injury and fatal accidents has it right near the top of the list ... a list any jurisdiction does not want to be on at all. Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln has averaged four serious bodily harm
accidents and four fatals per year from 2010-2013. “Those are very unfortunate numbers,” said StaffSgt. Mike Woods of Grimsby’s District 8. The detachment has stepped up its initiative to be a visible deterrent in the community. “We are trying to target traffic offences such as impaired driving, texting and driving, use of cell phones while driving and stunt driving,” noted Woods.
“If people drive by when we have someone stopped, we hope that will make them think and slow down. It does have an impact.” An April initiative by one platoon resulted in 40 provincial offenses being issued while eight
more were cited for distracted driving. “With accidents, three key factors, speed, alcohol and seat belts are evident. Seat belts, while just one factor, are an important way to prevent injury, so residents should buckle up,” said Woods.

Former Argolikos sank south of Thailand By Skip Gillham Special for Newsnow The 149.8 metre long Argolikos was built at Bremerhaven, Germany, and completed in October 1977. The Greek flag freighter first came to the Great Lakes in 1980 and was later registered in Panama. The ship had a to-
tal of seven owners and eight names in its thirty year career. In addition to Greece and Panama, the vessel was also registered in Cyprus and then Belize. It became Heng Tai in 2003 for Hengli Shipping Ltd. and the hull cracked while carrying a cargo of iron
ore on Oct. 1, 2007. The ship began leaking while on a voyage from Haldia, India, to Singapore and the crew of 26 were forced to take to the lifeboats to survive. The former Seaway trader sank in the Adaman Sea, south of Thailand, on October 2, 2007.

Thanks to the NRP Policing is a lot like being a politician. It is a thankless job...for the most part. In speaking with District 8 officials for the Police Week feature in today’s edition, it was apparent the Niagara Regional Police need a hand. They need the public to be more aware of what is happening with our teens and on our roads, just for two examples. With the teens, communication is key. Opening a dialogue about the perils of drug use and poor choices in general, can be just as important as stressing that kids walk across Livingston Avenue at the crosswalk when heading to Grimsby Square Plaza for lunch. No parent wants to be thinking, “I wished I had asked if....” in the event something happened. With traffic safety, it’s simple: slow down, don’t drink and drive, and buckle up. M.W.
fightrileyfight mantra of the year There are tough days at the office, and there are TOUGH days at the office. Sunday night was one of the TOUGH ones. While it was comfortable sitting on Richard Dunda’s couch, the subject matter was the tough part. I’ve known Richard for many years, mainly from his time served as president of Grimsby Minor Hockey. While a volunteer post, that gig comes with a significant amount of pressure even on the best of days. He has always been a cool customer, a consumate professional. All that goes out the window when one speaks of the ill health of one’s child, in this instance, Richard eldest son Riley, who suffered a stroke at the family’s Main Street East home about two weeks ago. Life can be tough. Bad things happen to good people. The twists and turn’s of life’s path knows no rules. Richard and his family’s approach to Riley’s illness really is the best for all involved, namely, you can still get to where life’s path intends you to go. You will just take a decidedly more difficult route to get there. Head down, shoulder to the grindstone, you keep on pushing ahead. Your choice? Quit. Not an option, especially for a talented, 18-yearold young man. In the brief time since the injury, much has hap-

Movement where it should be, memory coming back, feeling where there had been none, strength still apparent, speech coming back –– while still somewhat limited, all are there whereas from the start none of that would materialize. I’ve had my Dad die of a stroke. I’ve had a doctor tell me he thought my newborn son had a brain tumour and they needed to do a CT scan right away. Combining those two, I think I have a pretty good idea of some of the sentiment which was rolling around in Richard’s mind as we talked. And we covered a heck of a lot of ground that night, which I greatly appreciated as we planned our meeting for when Richard returned home after being at Hamilton General all day. To really simplify things, the family is optimistic and Riley’s progress has given them reason to be. The simple goal is for his
condition to improve so he can get in the rehab ward and he can get to work. Clearly, the boy does not have a work ethic issue. As Richard shook his head explaining the workout regimen Riley has put himself through just since January to compete for a university scholarship, he just gave a knowing nod, “the boy’s in great shape.” As Richard noted in the story, Riley is on a different path and while the twists and turns of that path are not known, what is known is that I would not want to be a roadblock in the young man’s way. I am 100 per cent confident I speak for the entire community when I send best wishes to Riley and whole family. The name they chose for a facebook page –– fightrileyfight –– could not be more appropriate. ****** There is no joy in Mudville today. Good people were let go by my competition, one who worked in the trenches with me for 15 years, on Tuesday. Torstar has to pay its bills, I guess. Katherine Nadeau, er, Grant as some may know her since she recently changed back to her maiden name, was the glue that kept me together there for years. If what I hear is true and the most excellent Scott Rosts now has the reins, I wish him the best of luck! He is a superior human being.
