Together Earth Day organizers aim to diversify supporters

ollution. Global warming. Toxic waste. A fossil-fuel-based economy. Environmental issues are integrated into our everyday lives, but one organization wants to illuminate what we can all do to counter their effects. The Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS) is a nonprofit made up of environmentalists and volunteers in the region. Conceived following the first Earth Day in 1970, ECOS hosts the annual Sacramento Earth Day celebration in Southside Park, which serves as the biggest fundraising opportunity for the donation-based organization. This year’s theme, “Celebrate. Educate. Motivate,” captures the group’s successes on the forefront of environmentalism and its goal to attract a more diverse group of people to the movement.
“Environmentalists can no longer be just older white people who are driving around in Priuses,” says Rick Guerrero, president of ECOS. “It includes all communities and in particular it includes disadvantaged communities. Ultimately the people who suffer most from environmental injustice are people of color.” Through the decades, ECOS has played a leading role in preserving natural resources in the region, including the establishment of the American River Parkway and Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Various committees are dedicated to responsible urban planning, transportation and air quality, and sustainable food sources in the region. “A lot of our volunteers are professionally trained experts — they are scientists, engineers
and doctors,” Guerrero says. “Those groups provide a wealth of knowledge and background that allow us to effectively walk into City Hall and make a purposeful and meaningful suggestion.” Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, first conceived the idea after witnessing the environmental effects of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Nelson formed a committee that would commemorate April 22 as Earth Day globally. Guerrero said this is a crucial time for ECOS to be proactive and engrave environmental consciousness into minds around the region. “We are in a kairos moment — a Greek term that means a point in time where all things come together for positive change,” Guerrero says. “With

social media and the Internet, people are becoming more aware. After the economic downturn, people are ready for a change. This moment in time — a kairos moment — is where we can help be part of that change.” Join ECOS for the Earth Day Celebration to: Celebrate. Educate. Motivate.
