those who live outside downtown Sacramento may think getting there is half the battle, but visiting downtown doesn’t have to be a headache. Here’s how:
Plan ahead
One of the best tools for planning a night out downtown is getheresac.com. No matter your mode of transportation, input your start and end points and the site will suggest the best possible routes. For cyclists, the website even has low-stress bike routes and parking. During larger events at Golden 1 Center, plan to take advantage of the bike valet (weather permitting).
Park it in advance!
Want the convenience of driving yourself downtown without the hassle of finding last-minute parking? That’s easy! Reserve and pay for a spot at sacpark.org where you can find the
closest parking to your special event, browse prices (typically in the $5-$25 range), select a spot and pay! Thinking about seeing Phantom of the Opera at the Community Center Theater in May? You can reserve your spot now!

If you know your ABCs and 123s, you can navigate downtown! Linda Tucker, media and communications officer for the City of Sacramento, says people coming from out of the area tend to rely on I-5 and J Street to get to downtown destinations like the Golden 1 Center. But there are other routes to get where you’re going. “Downtown is built on a grid system, which actually manages traffic very efficiently,” Tucker says. For folks coming from Folsom on Highway 50 and those coming from Roseville on Interstate 80, Tucker
encourages using alternative one-way arteries like P and Q streets, which can help thin out traffic for everyone.

“Businesses around the arena from Old Sacramento to the J-K-L corridor are absolutely seeing an increase in business,” says Michael Ault, executive director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership. “There’s been a trend of more users and benefits from the Center. Will that increase? We absolutely think so.” According to the Partnership, the overall number of visitors to the downtown area increased 20 percent in the first two months of events at the Golden 1 Center. That data was collected by the Partnership’s pedestrian traffic sensors placed throughout downtown. business ever since Golden 1 Center’s inaugural concert on Oct. 4: Paul McCartney. “Event nights are our busiest,” Evans says. “We’re very excited to have all the Kings games and the concerts — Paul McCartney was definitely our biggest night so far.” According to Ault, there are a number of developments on the way, including 150 new residential units, retail leases and a hotel slated to open on the 800 block of K Street, right at the arena’s front door. “There’s a real sense of optimism,” Ault says. “We’ve got a really good opportunity to take advantage of this momentum during the next couple of years.”
