Design Week Sacramento was formed by Amanda Sanchez when she was feeling isolated as a freelance graphic designer who works from home. She was planning a trip to Portland and saw that they had a Design Week. And San Francisco had a Design Week. And a bunch of cities all over the world had a Design Week. But not Sacramento. So she pitched the idea at Creative Mornings in March of last year, and lo and behold, she met a lot of designers who had that same feeling of isolation. The Design Week Sacramento Organizing Committee now has over 50 volunteers — designers, web developers, marketing and social media experts, and more. Lauren Kelly Sheridan joined the Design Week Sacramento committee after serving on the SF Design Week committee for several years. A Sacramento native, she was thrilled when she returned to Sacramento and learned that this was happening. Together, Amanda and Lauren co-direct Design Week Sacramento, and have formed a strong friendship, founded on the mutual love of Jimboy’s Tacos, Avett Brothers and this city. Through planning this, they have met so many amazing creatives that call our city home. Design Week Sacramento celebrates and connects our local design community. With panels, lectures, workshops, open houses, studio tours and mixers, please explore, learn, network and grow with us. Enjoy!

Meet the Designer Shop Local is important in

Catch these designers, along with others, in speaking engagements, workshops or in a shared retail space

the design world. And you can support Sacramento designers and artists by buying their work — ranging from posters and prints to pins and tote bags — during Design Week and beyond. An added bonus to doing it now: You can get up-close-and-personal with each designer, giving the piece you buy a deeper resonance.

HANS BENEWITZ I’m an award-winning designer, illustrator, occasional adjunct professor, doodler and wannabe musician. I’ve been working a design 9-to-5 and a design side-hustle on nights and weekends (modedesign.us) since I graduated from Sacramento State in 2006 with a degree in design. It’s a lot, but they both complement each other pretty well and let me scratch that design itch I get. I’m currently an art director at VSP, but also have worked on the side with a variety of clients such as Google, House of Blues, Ghirardelli, Asics and CBS Sports. I do branding, illustration, packaging, rock posters and environmental graphics.

My friends and I run a small design collective screen print studio in Verge called Interval Press. From time-to-time we come out, see our shadow, and decide to collaborate, design and print a project together. Over the past two years, I’ve also made my own line of enamel pins, iron-on patches, stickers and art prints that I will be selling at Urban Root on Saturday, May 11, noon–4 p.m. and at the Design Week “Meet the Designer” event at Shelf on Sunday, May 12, 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. A small amount is online at intervalpress. bigcartel.com, but I’ll have everything at those pop-up shops.

AMBER WITZKE I’ve been an artist since childhood and studied design and art at Sac State. I’ve been doing freelance work on my own since I was able to open my own bank account. Currently I’m working on pieces that center around my Sacramento pride and female empowerment. I love animals, especially dogs (I have two), and am also in the midst of doing some branding work for a local nonprofit vet and rescue organization. During the day, I’m an associate creative director at un/common, Sacramento’s “winningest” ad agency. I’ll have been there eight years this year. There, I create advertisements for various local organizations. My work has been featured in The

JASON MALMBERG At my day job, I’m a senior art director, and I’m also a freelance designer. I’ve been designing concert posters (gigposters) since 2014 for my company Decabet. I’ve lived in Sacramento since 1999, after moving here from my hometown of Omaha to work for Sacramento News & Review. Since then I’ve worked on all kinds of stuff around town. I am the founding (and currently a contributing) art director of Sactown Magazine. I also work in strategy and marketing, most recently for the digital agency Three29 and, for the past year, at 3fold Communications in Midtown Sacramento. I pride myself on being extremely multi-disciplinary, working adeptly in print, web, video, app and game design.

Sacramento Bee, Sactown Magazine, The Huffington Post and Submerge Magazine. I’m a #gridgirl, dog mom, wife, music nerd, and I have the ability to accept anything the universe throws at me as long as it’s not bad kerning. I also excel at picking the very worst karaoke song every time and am always up for a creative challenge. My design is powered by the belief that hope and positivity will always win. I believe the visual appeal of art, products and advertising has power beyond an immediate impression. I try to create things that endure. An everyday object can have a message that reinforces itself over time. So I strive to share messages about what I strongly believe in: girl power, animal rights, and my home — Sacramento. My husband, Jason Malmberg, and I will be speaking together during Design Week. My work is available for purchase at amberwitzke.com.

For Design Week, I will be mostly focusing on my music industry work. I have done nearly 200 unique, distinct gigposters over the past 15 years, designed apparel and album covers, branded several noteworthy music festivals (including Sacramento’s own TBD Fest at its height in 2014-15 as it transitioned from Launch). I’ve also worked for bands as varied and diverse as Chromeo, Kings of Leon and Metallica. I pride myself on having restless creativity and a vast vocabulary visually, which allows me to create vibrant and unique work for a variety of genres and sounds without ever digging down too far into having a visual “schtick.” During Design Week, I will be participating in pop-ups — where people can purchase limited editions of my original screen prints — as well as speaking and roundtable discussions. I’m interested in anything I can do to help or contribute to Sacramento reestablishing its oft-forgotten foothold as a relevant design center.

I’m a designer/maker and entrepreneur. I started my career in 2013 designing venturebacked startup applications and mass-market consumer products. In 2015, I transplanted with my wife, Hannah, to California for a startup, eventually ending up in Sacramento. Hannah and I only intended to be in Sacramento for a few months, but quickly fell in love with the vibrancy and creative renaissance here, so we decided to make Sacramento our home long-term. While seeking a local co-working space shortly after moving here, I stumbled upon Hacker Lab, a maker space equipped with every tool, machine and resource needed to develop my digital designs into tangible products on my own.

LILY THERENS I started doing graphic design professionally in 2011 when I graduated from UC Davis and moved to Sacramento, where there were more people to connect with and — honestly — cheaper rent. For years I made plans to move out of Sacramento, but as the city began experiencing what felt like a real creative rebirth, I started getting exciting work that made me feel comfortable enough to put some roots down. My work ranges from designing logos and branding for clients like the new Bawk!, a fried chicken restaurant opening on R Street, as well as illustrating custom artwork or environmental graphics. In addition to work I do for clients, I also design my own products to sell online or at local shops and pop-ups.

During Design Week, I will be giving a presentation on my design processes and the intersection of digital design and technology to create tangible products at the “Meet The Designers” event on May 12, 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. at Shelf in the DOCO. I will also have pop-ups — where some of my products will be available for sale — at this event, as well as at Design Week Sacramento’s launch party on May 11, noon–4 p.m. at Urban Roots Brewery. You can also see my work on Instagram @MakersLuck.

During Design Week, I will be involved in the maker’s events and I’ll be at the Pop-Up Market at Urban Roots that precedes the Design Week kickoff party on Saturday, May 11 (I’ll be there selling some of my goods—art prints, enamel pins, embroidered patches, etc.). On Sunday, May 12, I’ll be at the “Meet the Designer” event at Shelf, also selling my goods. And I’ll attend multiple Design Week events as a bystander or volunteer. Design Week is a real salute to the growing creative culture in Sacramento and I am just really happy to be a part of that. Sacramento carries the stigma of “a city full of state workers,” and while 10 years ago I agreed with that sentiment, my feelings have changed.

Meet the Designer Sunday, May 12 @ 11:30 am Shelf @ DOCO 405 K St #130, Sacramento, CA 95814

MICHAEL ROTTMAN

The empowerment from developing products from end-to-end myself evolved my career passion from designing for venturescale endeavors to designing at the studio level. Alongside my wife, I launched Makers Luck in 2017, a Midtown-based design studio specializing in the design and fabrication of commercial decor, furniture and signage, as well as a growing line of small-batch consumer products sold locally and online.

THE URBAN HIVE The Urban Hive is a member-based community workspace that houses over 500 entrepreneurs, designers, coders, creatives, and changemakers. Our goal is to provide the best workspace possible, a place where ideas can be born, connections can be made, and projects can take flight. We offer coworking, shared work spaces, private offices, meeting and conference rooms, as well as local coffee, tea, kombucha, craft beer, massage, yoga, workshops, networking, community events and educational opportunities. The original location, created in 2009 on H and 20th streets, opened with only 20 members. By 2017, membership was growing so quickly, we relocated to a 14,000-squarefoot space in the historic Libby Cannery building on Alhambra Boulevard. The new space showcases raw concrete columns, exposed brick walls, structural steel and

Co-Founders Brandon Weber and Molly Weber open up their community workspace every day and during Design Week original factory windows, juxtaposed with the sharp angles and airy minimalism of an art gallery dotted with postmodern furniture and the work of local artists. The striking build-out won an award for being one of the regions “Best Real Estate Projects” in 2017-18 from the Sacramento Business Journal. If you are interested in joining our community or booking event space, check out theurbanhive.com/ tour, or contact us at info@theurbanhive.com. HONEY AGENCY Founder and CEO Meghan Phillips is supporting talent at her own firm, and now at Design Week Sacramento Founded in 2008, Honey has been dedicated to bridging design and marketing through strategy for over a decade. The best, most holistic work is created when the two come together. Female-led, Honey is a team made up of individuals who are seriously hard-working and believe that creativity is fueled best by a detailed process. Honey was founded with an expertise in the food, beverage and agriculture industries, but has come to work with a range of clients who are passionate about their craft and look to do things differently. Honey will host an open studio tour and I will be speaking on a panel on the business of design (along with some of Sacramento’s greatest leaders in design). Ashley Rodseth, Honey’s

Creative Director, will be discussing approaching design in the restaurant industry at Canon on the Food & Design panel. We are working closely with Full Circle Press in Grass Valley to coordinate a letterpress workshop where attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the art of letterpress from the very best! And we have been collaborating closely with the Design Week Sacramento team to create a permanent brand mark that will be revealed at the closing event. Honey is honored to have the opportunity (and responsibility) to create the foundational mark that will remain a constant for Design Week, and we’re most excited about collaborating with local designers and artists to evolve the aesthetic of the complementary graphics year after year.

Last year, Design Week Sacramento was a thought. It has grown a lot since then, which would not be possible without all of our sponsors, partners, supporters, and – most of all – our volunteers. We have met with creatives all over our city for input; Monica Archuleta and her amazing social media team have been integral in the support we’ve received; Meghan VincentJones and her team have designed all the print and web marketing (special shoutout to Brooke Hankins for designing this guide, and to Angelo Esquivel and Brady Comerford for the photography). We’ve learned that Design Week Sacramento

is more than just a week. Thus, we are so excited to announce Design Sacramento – the nonprofit organization we formed after realizing our community yearned for yearlong programming. We have some exciting things to reveal at our Closing Party, including the new identity for Design Week Sacramento and Design Sacramento, created by Honey. See you there! To participate in next year’s event, contact amanda@designweeksac.com. To advertise in next year’s program guide, contact snradinfo@newsreview.com.
