Rainwater that doesn’t soak into the ground flows directly into local creeks through storm drains. This stormwater runoff contains pollutants such as motor oil, pesticides, and trash. In fact, stormwater runoff from roads, sidewalks, and landscaping is the single greatest source of water pollution. We will discuss water-wise landscaping practices that prevent water pollution, including rain gardens, bioswales, pervious pavers, and use of native plants. Then we’ll take a field trip to see a recently constructed stormwater treatment project.

We will also discuss the very distinctive elgasi subspecies (the “Tule Goose”) of the Greater Whitefronted Goose, the entire population (about 10,000) breeds in Alaska between the Alaska Range and Cook Inlet and winters entirely in the northern Sacramento Valley.
