eVeryoNe loVeS A WINNer! In our 2013 Annual “Best of Northern Nevada”

reader poll, we asked people to vote for businesses and individuals they felt were “the best” in over 350 categories. This year, 3,132 individuals participated in our survey, casting 108,150 votes throughout the various categories. Voting for the RN&R’s Best of Northern Nevada is conducted exclusively online, and we take great measures to virtually eliminate “ballot stuffing”. Businesses and people actively campaign for votes, soliciting employees, customers, friends and family members to vote for them. Just like any other poll or contest, the ones receiving the most votes are the ultimate winners. It’s a true popularity contest, where the winners are also the most popular choices. We take this stuff seriously, as do our readers. Bogus, or “bot” votes are weeded out, as are duplicate votes from the same e-mail

address and ballots containing fewer than the required number of votes. This results in a truly credible survey, as far as the numbers go. In our annual “Winners” publication, we feature winners from each category, along with 2nd and 3rd place readers’ choices. You’ll also get some insight into some of the winners and what they feel makes them “The Best”. We encourage you to call or visit this year’s Best of Northern Nevada winners to congratulate them and learn more about what they do. I am a 3rd generation launderer & dry cleaner. My Grandfather and my Dad both were in the industry as is my son now. Prior to purchasing Peerless Cleaners...for close to 25 years I was a chemical Tech Specialist in the Commercial Laundry & Dry Cleaning Business. I provided chemical technical support to most of the major casinos, resorts, hospitals, military, hotels, theme parks and of course dry cleaners throughout the western US and Far East. My background and experience in the laundry & dry cleaning chemical industry helps us provide a superior level of expertise to our customers.

When & How Did You Get Started in this Business? Doing business in Reno, downtown to be specific, has been awesome. There are so many people all working together to make this city be the best it can be. Whether you are a solo person running a small home business or part of a huge Casino, we are all moving in the same direction. That is powerful. Can not be denied. Look at the biggest little movement. That inspires me to make sure we aredoing our part. I got into cooking a along time ago, because I love being in the middle of a somewhat chaotic industry. It reminds me of playing football and maybe it is a far reach for some to connect those dots, but to me, they are so alike.

What Inspires You To Go To Work Every Day? The planning, the strategy, the hard work, the extra work when no one is looking, calling plays, the ups and downs, the fans and the haters but mostly the teammates. I am inspired by everyone I work with and around. Obviously everyone who works at Campo, but I also include farmers, sales people, delivery drivers, all the people who help service us so we can do what we do. It is pretty cool.

In 2006 Nevada Humane Society became a no-kill shelter, helping to create a true safety net for all of the homeless dogs and cats in the community.

What inspires you to go to work every day? The tremendous community support inspires everyone at Nevada Humane Society to continue their life-saving work. Adopters, donors, volunteers, and other rescue organizations have helped to make Washoe County one of the safest communities in the nation for homeless pets. When and how did you get started in this business? I bought an existing printing business called “PIP Printing” in Reno. My fist day was January 2, 1991. I had been looking for a printing business to buy for a few months, then I found this one.

When and how did you get started in this business?

After 23 years I changed to the career I’ve always wanted and went to Motocycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix. I became a fully-certified HarleyDavidson Motorcycle Technician, with special recognitions in chassis and electrical training, only 1 of 15 students in my class who achieved this. During my schooling I was employed as the Operations Manager at Chester’s Harley-Davidson in Mesa, Arizona, and immediately loved the staff and owners of Chester Group. They treated me like family. I transferred to the Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson dealership in February and rapidly advanced from the Parts Department to the Service Counter, where I can use my training and expertise, but also interact with customers, which is important to me because I am a people person. Some of our customers are like close friends.

The Discovery opened to the public on September 10, 2011.

What inspires you to go to work every day? Inspiring the curiosity and exploration that creates lifelong learners.

Got any advice for people who want to make their business the best? Be loyal to your customers and inspire them to sing your praises.

Why do you think RN&R readers voted you the best? The community’s pride in The Discovery. It truly is a world-class museum right here in Reno.

What makes your business different than your competition?

What inspires you to go to work every day?

I work in one of the best industries and for the most recognized brand in the world, HarleyDavidson. I love working around bad ass motorcycles and no other job could be this much fun. Plus, the people I work with are some of the coolest cats in town. It’s not hard earning a paycheck this way.

PFPCo’s noble Pie Parlor We have always entertained an extremely high interest in food. I remember when the Food Network came out when I was about 12 or so. My dad was a big fan, so the tv was pretty much glued to that channel from that point forward. Trevor has some fine dining experience from Sezmu and I really got into pizza making while working at Blue Moon and Black Rock Pizza here in Reno. We have been extremely lucky to have been given proprietary dough and sauce recipes from Sicily, Italy and Brooklyn, NYC respectively.

What inspires you to go to work every day? I think a passion and true pride to put out the best pizza (and everything else) that we can make. Having people go out of their way to let you know that it is the BEST pizza, wings, salad, etc that they have ever had or ever had outside of New York is a truly amazing feeling. It also hurts deeply when people are unhappy with the product. We can’t be everything to everyone, but we take it very personally and we try our best to make improvements on a daily basis.

Why do you think the RNR readers voted you the BEST?

What makes your business different than your competitors? Well for one we are in the shop a lot actually working or just there making sure the food and the service is of the highest quality and consistency. We take a lot of time to hand-make items that other shops get delivered to them. A meatball or sausage that is made from scratch in house tastes a lot different than a meatball that has been made in a huge batch and shipped frozen. Not only is our food a cut above, but we also take time to make sure we have some great artisan beers and hand selected wines mostly from small family owned vineyards.

Any advice for people who want to make their business “the best”? Train your body to run on a lot less sleep then it’s used to! Just teasing but really it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, passion and a willingness to never stop learning to be successful.

I believe that the readers and this community have had a huge void in their options for fast, quality food in the downtown area (especially late at night). We take an incredible level of pride to tweaking and re-tweaking all of the recipes, processes, and scrutiny of which suppliers we use and product we accept. The tomatoes for the sauce are San Marzano. The meats are Boar’s Head and are sliced daily. Our flour in a blend and quality that only our shop purchases (to my knowledge).

Reno CyberKnife has been a member of the cancer community and a service of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center since October 2008. The center originally opened as one of only a handful of CyberKnife programs within the United States offering stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of tumors. As a strong medical community, Reno was an ideal location for this innovative technology. I started with Reno CyberKnife in February 2012. I was recruited into CyberKnife, but have been a huge fan of the technology and its ability to help patients since it was first brought to the community.

What inspires you to go to work every day? Being a part of a team that provides an amazing service to our community inspires me to go to work every day. I get to interact with inspiring people who have remarkable stories while working with extremely talented staff and physicians. Reno CyberKnife gives patients access to treatment that they may have otherwise been unable to receive. I love that we really do make a difference in the quality of life for our patients.

What makes your business different than your competitors? Reno CyberKnife provides the only CyberKnife technology in northern Nevada. Using CyberKnife, the center treats patients with a nonsurgical procedure called stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Patients are treated in five or fewer visits versus traditional radiation, which could be upward of 40 treatments. Patients experience minimal side effects from the treatment and people typically go back to work or daily life with minimal to no downtime. In addition, our staff and physicians are not only among the most experienced, but also the most compassionate when helping patients through their cancer journey.

Any advice for people who want to make their business the best? I think in order to make your business the “best” you need to make sure that your customers/patients come first. The rest will follow!

I think that readers voted us the best because we truly are the best at what we do! Working alongside Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center and our physician partner, Radiation Oncology Associates, has afforded us the best that there is in Reno. When & how did you get started in this business?

We started the Pet Play House in October of 2000 because we had our own dog who needed to attend daycare. We looked at daycares in our area and didn’t find what we felt our pet needed. That’s when we decided to travel and explore dog daycare facilities and concepts in larger cities and also around the world to see what other ideas were out there. We modeled the Pet Play House after the things we felt we and others in the Reno area would want for their own dogs.

What inspires you to go to work every day?

We like to see how happy our facility makes the doggies. We offer a very different environment than a warehouse daycare or typical dog kennel, and we love to see how the dogs benefit from our happy home-like environment. The fact that they come excited each day for daycare, or happy and relaxed each time their parents drop them off before a vacation is very rewarding!

Because doggy parents love picking up a tired dog at the end of their day or vacation, and going home to a house and yard that has NOT been destroyed by a bored or anxious pup!

What makes your business different than your competitors?

Our staff has a personal connection with each of our doggie clients, knowing their personalities and what makes them happy. Our facility is state-of-the-art, designed and build specifically for the dogs. Large windows and skylights which let plenty of natural sun shine into the indoor play areas, combined with an advanced ventilation system

Our staff provides close supervision and 24hr pampering for all doggie guests, whether they’re staying just for the day or for an extended vacation!

When and how did you get started in this business? I was inspired by my father’s love of cooking. Growing up in Chicago gave me many opportunities to try a vast variety of the culinary arts.

I wanted to get into the industry and entered as a first time business owner. Seven years later I have maintained the legacy of 5 Star Saloon as the oldest and most popular gay hangout in Reno, learned new skills that have allowed me to continually improve the 5 Star experience, and introduced one of the hottest upcoming clubs in Reno – Rise Night Club.

What makes your business different than your competition? When you visit the Rap you feel welcome, as if you are having a meal with very close friends or family.

What inspires you to go to work every day? My need to share what I love and what I have learned about food over the years.

All of my employees inspire me. To date, between 5 Star and Rise, I employ approximately 60 staff. They all are incredible people, work hard and take ownership of their responsibilities – I am very lucky to have such a great team.

It is the staff and our guests that have remained with us year after year...it is a loyalty that makes this restaurant one of the very best in Reno.
