Happy Hour By Melody Minx
C
an there be two lovelier words put together than ‘happy’ and ‘hour?’ I think not. I’m not a big drinker, but those words pique my interest. Pictures of relaxed people laughing, drinks in hand, dance in my head. We are SO lucky to be one of the states that hasn’t made it illegal to partake of libations at a certain time of day and at a reduced rate, otherwise termed – Happy Hour. Yes, around 20 more ‘pure’ states believe that these lovely, social hours promote over-consumption. Strangely, one of the most drinkloving countries in the world prohibits happy hours, as well – Ireland. But just as those before us believed, I see it as a time to relieve stress and let my hair down a little. Happy hours have been around at least since Prohibition and WW1. It was Naval slang for a time when the sailors would let loose a bit – participating in boxing matches or other athletic endeavors to boost morale and break up the monotony of sealife. And then during the driest time in our history, it became the thing to wet your whistle at a Speakeasy or friends home before going out for dinner. Thus began the Happy Hour. Some are literally just an hour while most are two to four. I believe setting aside just ONE hour ruins the innate, relaxed nature. Many people come straight from work to decompress from the trials and tribulations of the job. A good Happy Hour is an opportunity to come as you are and break your routine or maybe mingle with coworkers in a relaxed setting. It’s also a fabulous time to meet new, diverse people.
All walks of life converge on Happy Hours like the proverbial African watering hole, from garbage guys to CEOs. It’s an event most can frequent easier and more often than a big night out on the town. And lower prices are a great reason to try a new drink. The happiest of Happy Hours are those you can relax at with a group of people that make you smile. Be that at a casino, dive bar, cantina, shnazzy bar or your own backyard. Here’s my recipe for the perfect Happy Hour (take heed, local haunts): It should be multiple times per week, twice a day. Optimal time would be 6-8p and 11p-1a. Beer, well and at least three food choices should be half off. Yes, half off. Throw in a special on one unique drink, something most people wouldn’t normally try. Smaller food portions are fine, but don’t just offer wings, please. I want to walk into a clean, lively spot with courteous staff, but this should be a given. If you have a patio or roof or other cool nook or cranny, use it. Now, hand me my fruity drink. I’m ready to wind down from my workday. Oh - and if the halfoff drink comes with a sweet, hot dude, my Happy Hour is complete.

The Party Bus: A Nightclub on the Road By Martina Beatty

ore than two dozen friends are lounging on couches, listening to music and enjoying some cocktails. They’re also cruising down Highway 395. Cheers! They’re on a party bus. “It’s like taking a nightclub on the road, literally,” said Danell Wilson-Perlman, co-owner of Reno Tahoe Limousine and Reno Tahoe Transportation. With U-shaped seating, interior lighting, a bar, a big TV -- and a hired chauffeur for a designated driver -party buses are limousines on a larger scale.

Excursions can extend as far as the Bay Area. “Traditional limousines are going away because groups are getting bigger,” she said. “They realize the more people they get the cheaper it is, because if you start divvying up what it costs, it’s not that much.”

memorable night out when her friends hired the 16-passenger bus for her birthday. “If you have enough people going, it ends up being way less than cab rides.” Anderson and her friends used a bus for a Downtown Reno pub crawl. “The convenience of that was incredible,” she said. “We were able to get from South Reno to downtown and back home safely.” The eight couples on board started having fun right away, lip-synching to songs on their own iPod during the drive. “It’s got cool lighting like a limousine on the inside, and there are big couches,” Anderson said. “It’s very comfortable. And we were able to bring a cooler, so we had our own cocktails on the bus. “You don’t have to shoot your entire budget inside a bar.” Communication with the driver went well, too. id you know that there are blogs upon blogs and articles upon articles on what to wear to get into clubs in large metropolises? The warmer climates do not deem modesty as a requirement. In fact, it’s detrimental. The cooler spots prefer more coverage but still lots of swank. The big cities want your attire to add to their general aesthetic. These are the places where image really is everything and only the beautiful survive.
Two or three of your favorite lovelies can be a fabulous accessory, but so can a clean cut man. If you’re headed out with men-folk, do society a favor and point them towards a little bit of fashion effort. Maybe a more body-conscious cut shirt, dark jeans or slacks and some dress shoes. I’ve worked almost every venue from high energy, fast pace night clubs to low key mom and pop joints and in every situation there’s a level of interaction with the customers and energy that is undeniable.

BEST THING ABOUT BARTENDING Meeting people, seeing the variety of personalities that come into Davidson’s. Davidson’s has an interesting reputation which makes some people turn away, but it’s really just a fun place with good people and great drink specials.

DO YOU COMPETE? I participated in the 2013 Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition, it was my first competition and I had only been bar tending for a matter of months before entering. I took third place for Reno and was incredibly happy, considering my situation.
