Cruising the holiday lights Is anything better than hopping in the car with the kids to drive around town and look at holiday lights? While I have never decorated the exterior of my own house, I greatly appreciate the trouble my neighbors go through to festoon their homes with lights for the sake of my family’s enjoyment. There’s one neighborhood near us that has every cartoon character you could think of. The kids gasp and proclaim the character’s name (“SpongeBob! Minion! Woody!”) when they lock eyes on their animated friends miraculously sitting on someone’s front lawn. Plus, there’s the comfort of buckling your 4-year-old and 2-year-old into their carseats (as opposed to chasing them around a Christmas faire). And did I mention our car has butt warmers? Around Christmas, my grandma used to make us homemade eggnog. … The adults would get it with brandy and the kids would get it without. I’ve made it … but it was better when she made it. I’m keeping the tradition alive anyway.

What is your favorite holiday song? The Mariah Carey song that everyone hates but I love: “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

What is your favorite way to make chai tea for the holidays? Hot Apple Chai-der. We take our strong brew concentrate with a nice fresh, local apple juice. It’s super simple and it’s so good.

faux Being 3,000 miles away from the Midwestern fireplace of my youth, I’ve had to improvise to find the crackle of a fire each winter. Enter Yule Log YouTube videos. Amongst the strangeness of the internet, there are two clear winners in my home come December — Lil Bub and Star Wars. Lil Bub — the world’s favorite celeb cat from space — has no less than five Yule Log videos (just like she deserves). My personal favorite is the 2015 edition, which pairs Bub’s peaceful purr with a bit of whimsy and magic (sorry, no spoilers). Got that “dark side” streak? The Darth Vader Yule Log always gives me a chuckle. My grandpa used to dress up like Santa for the local hospital and then afterward he would get on the roof and make noise and then come in as Santa for everybody.

A little bit of greenery and a little bit of twinkle goes a long way — just add in pops of greenery wherever you can. You don’t have to have a lot of decorations, but some pine greenery, some berries really add a lot to a not-so-decorative space.

Forget football, “A Christmas Story” is the only thing worth watching on TV Christmas Day: Secret decoder rings, triple-dog dares, lamps that meet with unfortunate endings — it’s a holiday classic for good reason. Anyone who’s spent hours roasting the perfect holiday bird can attest to the tragedy created by the Bumpus hounds. ~anne Stokes

Butte County mining camps and foothill farms were an active front in the California Indian wars. Using centuries-old tribal tactics, Butte Creeks, the Mountain Maidu tribelets’ warriors, resisted settlers’ seizures of their territories. Making a strategic shift, in 1857, they acquired bases in the neighboring Yahi’s Deer Creek Canyon. They merged with renegades and Yahi ﬁghters, called Mill Creeks, whose raids had terriﬁed Maidu and Tehama County farmers through the mid-1850s. Meanwhile, quarrels between miners and farmers and with John Bidwell continued as Civil War loyalties undermined unity against the Indian raiders,

now out of Deer Creek. In 1863, Bidwell urged the Interior Department to expunge Butte County of all the Maidu—except his own workers, mostly Mechoopda Maidu. After centuries of self-governance, this independent tribelet had to labor for him on their own historic territory. A few Mechoopdas, remembering the dignity of autonomy and self-sufficiency, joined in Mountain Maidu raids on Bidwell’s ranch. Bloody Butte County conflicts culminated in 1865 with that county’s final round of Indians’ and settlers’ mutual retaliatory killings.

Some family members are known for making apple pies. In my family, I’m known for starting fires. While everyone else is cooking, I’m hunched over the fireplace gathering kindling and crumpling newspapers. You can call me a pyro (my family does), but have you ever actually thought about fire? What is your favorite holiday tradition? Trimming the tree. When we were kids — we were Jewish, my aunt was Christian — we used to cut the Star of David out of cardboard and cover it with tin foil and put it on top of the tree.

What is your favorite holiday cookie? Almond biscotti.

What is your favorite holiday recipe (to make and eat)? Crown roast rack of lamb with a Bella Sun Luci sun-dried tomato rosemary relish. Have you ever made a crown roast rack of lamb? You literally have to sew it with a needle and thread. It’s fun making it.

What is the best holiday gift to give your pets? Give your dog the gift of time, so that you’re spending time with your dog, enjoying your dog, walking with your dog. Secondly, the gift of learning that crates and confinement areas are safe, not scary, places. As I look around at all these evacuations, I think of all the poor animals who have never been exposed to … being housed in a crate. It’s so critical.
