1st Place: Best Place To Volunteer The staff and volunteers who tend to the animals at Butte Humane Society epitomize the term “animal-lovers.” Their dedication and hard work to ensure pets find good homes is the number one reason CN&R readers continually recognize BHS as the “Most Charitable Cause.” They’ve also been named the “Best Place to Volunteer,” which speaks volumes about how the organization is run. In 2018, BHS will move closer towards building a new 24,000 square foot animal care and adoption center, including a shelter and clinic. With continued local love and support, BHS plans to create a community animal resource center that reflects the mission and core value of the organization. The new expanded facility will provide a campus for vital, lifesaving work. Upon completion, BHS will become the animal welfare hub of Butte County and beyond—working with other shelters and rescue groups to help reduce euthanasia in the north state.

1st Place: Best Local Winery – Regional In the small, dusty town of Vina, California, a fifth-generation winemaker and a community of TrappistCistercian monks are creating hand-crafted and unique wines. With a focus on quality and commitment, this surprising team is putting Vina on the map as a distinguished winemaking region. Vina’s rare viticultural soils were first cultivated by Peter Lassen as early as 1846. In 1890 Leland Stanford then transformed these modest beginnings into his Great Vina Ranch, becoming the world’s largest winemaking operation. Later, with prohibition looming, the land was sold and nearly 4,000 acres of vines removed. In 1955, a group of Trappist-Cistercian monks, known for developing some of the most famous European vineyards, settled in Vina establishing the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Today they work with winemaker Aimée Sunseri and her family producing award-winning wines from both Vina and her family’s Napa Valley vineyards. They believe wine is not just made well, but also must be grown well. With this in mind, New Clairvaux Vineyard endeavors to resurrect this once-famous region. You’re invited to visit and taste all that this historic and extraordinary winery has to offer.

The Chico Women’s Club isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s an active, all-volunteer, community service organization that has been contributing to Chico’s heritage for 104 years. Its members are the women who created Caper Acres and have awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships for college bound women. While their building is an important asset, their membership is where they place the real value. The Chico Women’s Club is a busy, progressive group, inviting new members to join in its support of the arts and education. As Chico’s oldest local nursery, The Plant Barn has served the community for over three decades. Sierra Central, like many credit unions, formed to serve military personnel. Beale Credit Union opened in 1955 when fifteen members of the Air Force each invested one hundred dollars to form the credit union that would serve military and civilian personnel. In 1963 Shasta Cascade Credit Union was chartered in Redding, California. Its membership base included city, county, hospital and lumber industry employees. Beale and Shasta Cascade merged in 1981 forming what is now known as the Sierra Central Credit Union. The newly formed credit union experienced a decade of rapid growth, merging with 22 other credit unions. Today, Sierra Central Credit Union continues to grow with increasing membership and provides amazing customer service to its members.
