WINNERS' GUIDE The Reno News & Review’s Best of Northern Nevada contest is kind of a big deal. Our readers have voted for their favorite local people, places and things for more than two decades. Thousands of voters log in to vote every year, and after the fallout, the tallying of votes, and the internet outrage at the results, local businesses proudly display their winning plaques. We at the RN&R consider hosting this contest to be a sacred trust. We announced the winners in our whopping big Best of Northern Nevada issue back in August. But this week’s issue is something a little different: It’s a chance for the winners to direct readers directly—to say “thanks” or “we appreciate our supporters” or “screw off, haters” or whatever else. It’s also a chance to give some recognition to the second and third place winners, who are listed online but not in the initial BONN issue. Some of the winners are long-tenured institutions that have won their respective categories for years. Others are ambitious upstarts that fought hard campaigns to win competitive categories. Either way, we’ll tip our hat to them, and hope you do too. Northern Nevadans, keep an eye out for those winning plaques. They’re a sign of quality. i was living in Ventura California when a friend and i were talking about our futures. she suggested that i become a dog groomer because i was so good with dogs. “What’s that?” i asked. it was 1974; i found out, and went to grooming school in La. i opened my first shop in santa Cruz in 1976. From then on, it was the perfect job for me.

What inspires you to go to Work eVery day?

styling puppies’ hair can be like an art form; i love all forms of art and this was my way of expressing myself and working with animals who i truly love. i crack up at the different personalities of the dogs. When i go to work it’s like visiting with your friends every day. Making new clients is like making new friends. i see that our clients feel happy and proud when they leave the shop with their little tails wagging; it always puts a smile on my face.

After experiencing and overcoming some health challenges in our family, we developed a passion for healthy food, and wanted to share it with the community. In 2010 Gino and I opened “Pathways Café” in the UNR medical building, and the response to healthier options was so positive that we felt that we could make a difference by opening a full service restaurant for the Reno community. I think a passion and true pride to put out the best pizza (and everything else) that we can make. Having people go out of their way to let you know that it is the BEST pizza, wings, salad, etc that they have ever had or ever had outside of New York is a truly amazing feeling. It also hurts deeply when people are unhappy with the product. We can’t be everything to everyone, but we take it very personally and we try our best to make improvements on a daily basis.

The meats are Boar’s Head and are sliced daily. Our flour in a blend and quality that only our shop purchases (to my knowledge).

WHAT MAkES YOuR BuSINESS DIffERENT THAN YOuR COMPETITORS?

Well for one we are in the shop a lot actually working or just there making sure the food and the service is of the highest quality and consistency. We take a lot of time to hand-make items that other shops get delivered to them. A meatball or sausage that is made from scratch in house tastes a lot different than a meatball that has been made in a huge batch and shipped frozen. Not only is our food a cut above, but we also take time to make sure we have some great artisan beers and hand selected wines mostly from small family owned vineyards.

our first project opened in 2010 with Pie-Face Pizza Co, which was later renamed to noble Pie Parlor due to a trademarking issue. Pignic Pub & Patio, as a concept, was born purely by thinking about where we have made our fondest memories and how we like to spend our free time. For us, these memories were made relaxing on a deck or a porch eating bbQ with our closest friends and family while enjoying frosty beer or delicious cocktail. Creating this kind of every day atmosphere with the capability for customizable private and semi private events has been one of our greatest pleasures.

the most inspiring part about the work that we do is that we get to be a contributing member to our greater community. there are so many exciting things on the horizon for reno. Pignic Pub & Patio is a truly unique environment and bar. there are other places with similar elements elsewhere in the u.s., but there is only one Pignic and it is in reno, nv where it belongs.
